The Kenilworth Eggstravaganza
event, hosted
by the Kenilworth Park
District on Saturday, April
13, was just as much about
celebrating the upcoming
holiday as it was about
celebrating the growth and
development occurring in
the community.
On a sunny morning,
families gathered on the
lawn of Townley Field,
where 3,000 stuffed plastic
eggs were scattered about
the lawn, tempting youngsters
ages 1-10 with the
sweet promise of candy.
Johnathan Kiwala, executive
director of the Park
District, stood on the lawn,
bullhorn in hand, ready
to signal the start of the
hunt, excited to see how
this home-grown event has
evolved over the years.
“When I look out and
see how many eggs are sitting
on this lawn, I think
of how far we’ve come
as a park district over the
past few years,” Kiwala
said. “The large amount
of eggs out on this field today
proves, that with support
of this amazing community,
our programs are
growing faster than ever
before. There is a good
vibe in town lately, because
the good things that
are occurring are a true
team effort between the
Park district, the residents
of Kenilworth, the school
district, groups and clubs;
the list is endless.”
This year, the Park District
decided to utilize the
current Village House during
the event, allowing
little ones to play with real
All main courses are served with three vegetables and a starch
bunnies, goats and geese
thanks to Michelle Brookfield,
assembly hall manager.
She invited Animal
Quest to bring a live petting
zoo, explaining how using
the building was a great
way to showcase the many
ways the Village House —
which is facing a hopeful
renovation — is beneficial
to the community.
“I couldn’t think of a
more perfect way to extend
the egg hunt, which
is always a quick activity,
then by bringing in some
adorable animals for the
children to interact with,”
Brookfield said. “What a
better way to celebrate the
season and the upcoming
holiday, while showing everyone
how much we need
extra space. Programming
around town is busting at
the seams, so renovating
this building means more
space to hold community
events.” Outside, on the
Joseph Sears blacktop,
children enjoyed a bounce
house and the chance to
make a motorized Lego
car, thanks to the STEMbased
organization Robothink.
Kids line up for the start of the hunt.
Evelyn Olbrisch, 1, of Kenilworth, hunts for eggs.
As families flitted from
indoor to outdoor activities,
Kenilworth’s Allison
McEntee came over to
Kiwala and his coworkers,
giving them a round of applause.
“The Park District consistently
does a great job
of providing well-organized,
fun events for families
to enjoy,” McEntee
said. “Today’s been great,
offering so many different
opportunities for family
fun in our community.”
