Valueissomethingthathasworthtoanotherperson.Somethingofvaluecan<br />

beinspirational,moving,interesting,funny,sad,andcanperhapschangethe<br />

person’slife.<br />

Theenemyofvalueis“noise”(orspam).Insocialmediaoneofthebiggest<br />

problemsisthatpeoplesharewaytoomuch.Theyshareboringshit.Honestly,<br />

nobodycaresifyouhadamuffinandacappuccinoforbreakfast.Peopleare<br />

interestedthoughifyousharearelevantphotographystory,ifyousharea<br />

strongimagethatinspires,orifyouaskquestionsthatengagepeopleorcreate<br />

debates.


Sobeforeyoushareanythingonsocialmedia,whetheritbeFacebook,Twiter,<br />

orInstagram thinktoyourselfthefolowingquestions:<br />

-Wilthisinspiremyviewer?<br />

-Ifsomeonesharedthiswithme,wouldIfinditinteresting?<br />

-Isthisinformationvaluabletomyviewer,orisitjusttopumpupmyownego?<br />

Ithinkoneofthebiggestthingsweshouldavoidinsocialmediaas<br />

photographersarethingsthatboostourego.<br />

Whyisthat?Haveyoueverbeentoapartyandmetsomeonewhohadahuge<br />

ego?Someonewhocouldn’tstoptalkingaboutthemselves,anddidn’tgivea<br />

damnaboutanybodyelse?Nobodylikesthatguy,don’tbethatguy.<br />

Thatguyonsocialmediaistheonewhoisonlyinterestedinbroadcastingand<br />

notinterestedinengagingwithotherpeople.Theymightsharethingsabout<br />

themselvesthatarenarcissisticorthingsthatmakethem bragabout<br />

themselves.<br />

Butrather,beagenerouspersononsocialmedia.Trytocreateandaddvalueto<br />

yourfolowersandtotheInternetatlarge.Everyonealwayslovesgenerous<br />

peopleastheyaregenuine,wanttohelp,andlovesharingthingsthatareof<br />

valuetoothers.<br />

Soratherthanthinkingthequestion:“HowcanIgainmorefolowersonsocial<br />

media”–askyourself,“HowcanIcreatemorevalueandhelpoutmorepeople<br />

outthere?”Themorevalueyoucreate,themorefolowersyouwilnaturaly<br />

Howdidyoufirstbecomeinterestedinphotography?<br />

<strong>Photography</strong>wassomethingthatwasintroducedtomeataveryyoungage.I<br />

grewupwatchingbothmyfatherandbrothersdeveloptheirownblackand<br />

whitephotographstheytook,andlateron,myfatherdabbledindevelopinghis<br />

owncolorprints.Ialwaysfounditfascinatingwatchingmyfatherputapieceof<br />

paperintosomeliquid(developer)anditslowlystarttoshowanimage.<br />

Ialsorememberthinkingwewouldaldiewhenmyfatherwouldslam onhis<br />

brakesonahighwayandpulovertothesideoftheroadtogetashot!Igrew<br />

upinMontreal,Canadaandwehadbeautifulmountainsthat,inthefal,turned<br />

intoanabsolutelybeautifulpainting.Caughtattheperfecttime(heightof<br />

color)ifIdidn’tseeitwithmyowneyes,Iwouldn’tbelievethecolorscouldbe<br />

real.<br />

Ialwaysenjoyedtakingphotos,alwayshadsomekindofpointandshootbutI<br />

didn’trealyhaveanydesiretodoanythingwiththem.Fastforwardmanyyears,<br />

gotmaried,had2children,movedtoEdmontonAlberta,Canada,gotdivorced,<br />

remariedandfinalystartedtotravelwithmynewhusband.Welovetocruise<br />

andIjustlovebeinginanewportwithnewphotoopportunitiesdaily.Iwas<br />

frustratedwithmypointandshootasIcouldn’tgetcloseenoughtoanything<br />

andrealywantedazoom lens.MyfirstD<strong>SLR</strong>waspurchasedabout9yearsago<br />

withazoom lens.Ikeptitinauto,soproudofthepicturesIwasgeting(not<br />

whenIlookbackatthem now !).Fast-forwardagaintoabout4summersago,<br />

IhadmystafoverforaBBQatmyhouseandIpuledoutmycameraandbegan<br />

totakephotos.Oneofthegirlsstartedaskingmequestionsaboutthecamera<br />

anditcameoutthatIwasshootinginauto.Shejustlookedatmeandasked<br />

whyIwouldhavesuchanexpensivepieceofequipmentandnotuseittoits<br />

potential.DAREON !Iam verycompetitivewithmyselfmostlyandfrom that<br />

dayforwardIwantedtolearnhowtoshootinmanual.


Whatorwhoinspiresyou?<br />

Thisisadifficultquestion.Ican’tsaythatanyoneartist,orthinginspiresme.IfI<br />

seesomethinganditmovesmeinanywayIam inspiredtocaptureit.Thatbeing<br />

said,peopleinthiscoursemostdefinitelyinspireme.Ihavewatchedpeoplegrow<br />

sofastinourStudentFacebookGroupandthatinspiresmetokeepongrowing<br />

andlearningmoreandmoreofmycraft.


Howhasourphotographycoursehelpedyou?<br />

Theanswerissimple,ineverywhichwaypossible!Iwilcontinuemystory<br />

whereIleftofbefore.AfterIchalengedmyselftolearnmanual,Istartedtodo<br />

researchandcameacrossTanya’scourse.Ifeltitwasreasonablypricedsothat<br />

evenifIwastedmymoneyitwouldn’tkilmefinancialy.Manthatwasagreat<br />

gamble!IbeganthecourseanditwasjustsoeasytofolowandIsaw<br />

improvementsinmyselfrightaway.IalsoLOVEDtheprivateFBpageas<br />

everyonewassohelpfulwhenyouaskedforhelp.Ilovedlookingandlearning<br />

from everyoneelse’sphotosaswel.Ididn’tgoanywherewithoutmytrusted<br />

laminatedcheatcheatsandrealytriedtofolowthem toatee.AsIstarted<br />

gainingsomeconfidenceIbegantoexperimentwithdiferentsetings,daringto<br />

dosomething“my”way.ThistaughtmewhyIshouldfolowtheexperts–LOL.<br />

Lotsofbluryimages,focalpointnotcorect,lightingwayofbutthishas<br />

helpedmetounderstandmymistakesandimproveonthem.Istilremember<br />

howproudIwasthefirsttimeTanyapickedoneofmyphotostobeinthe<br />

magazine.ItgavemethemotivationtocaryonevenonthosebaddayswhenI<br />

wouldshoot100photosandnoneofthem wouldcomeout.Tanya’sediting<br />

coursewasanothereyeopenerforme.IusedtofeellikeIwascheatingwhenI<br />

editedmyphotos.Ihavesincelearnedhowtoappreciatethatwhenyoushoot<br />

inRAW,developingofthatphotoisamust.Itisnodiferentthanthefilm days,<br />

developingthenegative(RAW file)intothefinalprintjustlikeIwatchedmy<br />

fatherdogrowingup.


What’syourmostmemorablemoment?<br />

Therehavebeensomanyofthem overtheyearsbutselingmyfirstphotowas<br />

definitelymemorable!ItwasanightsceneofmycitythatIpostedonmy<br />

personalpageandmydaughtercommentedonit.Herbosssawitand<br />

contactedmeandmyfirstsaleoccured.

Whatplansdoyouhaveforthefutureofyourphotography?<br />

from workorlifeingeneral.Forme,photographygivesmeapurpose,asense<br />

ofcalm whileIam outinnaturetakingphotos(evenifthatisinmyown<br />

backyard)orevenindoorssetingupshotsformymacrophotography.<br />

Developingtheseshotsintomyownartform givesmepleasureandasense<br />

ofaccomplishment.<br />

now.Iam hopingthatwhenIretireIwilhavethetimetodedicatetomy<br />

craft,setupawebsite,getoutthereandmarketmyphotosandhopefulywil<br />

beabletogrowthebusiness.Ifthatdoesn’thappen,I’m goodwiththattooas<br />

thiswilalwaysbemypassion.

DONOTGIVEUP!TherehavebeenmanydayswhereIwonderwhoam I<br />

kidding,Ihavenotalent,everyoneisbeterthanme,andnoonewileverwant<br />

Ithinkoneoftheeasiestwaysaphotographercanbuildvalueandgaina<br />

folowinginsocialmediaistocreateablog.Ablogisahomebasethatis<br />

ownedbyyouandisaplacewhereotherpeoplecanfindyou,interactwithyou,<br />

andaplacewhereyoucansharephotos,knowledge,orinformation(whichis<br />

hopefulyofvaluetoothers).<br />

Sohowdoyouknowwhatkindofblogtomake?Myruleofthumbisthis:think<br />

aboutcreatingablogthatyouaresopassionateaboutthatevenifyouwere<br />

neverpaidforit,youwouldupdateiteverydayforatleast10years.Agoodway<br />

tofigureoutwhatkindofblogtostartisbyaskingyourselfthequestion:“What<br />

kindofblogwouldIwanttoread?”<br />

Ipersonalyhavefounditisgoodtowrite“how-to”posts.Why?How-toposts<br />

aregeneralyaimedtobehelpfulandusefultoothersasyoucanshareyour<br />

ownperspectiveonhowtodosomething.<br />

Anothergoodstrategyistofeaturetheworkofotherphotographers.Ithink<br />

mostphotographerswanttheirworkseen,appreciated,andpublished.Alotof<br />

photographersIknowwanttogettheirworkseeninmagazines,exhibitions,<br />

blogs,orotherwebsites.Evenifyouareasmalwebsiteorblogstartingoff,<br />

peoplestilareflateredandhonoredtobeaskedtohavetheirphotosshared.<br />

Thebenefitofpublishingtheworkofothersisthatyoucreatevalueintheir<br />

life(givingthem thehappinessofhavingtheirworkshared),andyoualsogive<br />

theopportunitytobuildyourblog.Ifyoupublishanintervieworfeaturewitha<br />

photographer,theywilnaturalysharetotheirsocialnetworksaboutthepost<br />

whichwilcausemorepeopletolandonyourblog(andhopefulystayfora<br />

longtime).


2.Colaborate<br />

Anothergoodwaytogainmorefolowersonsocialmediaistocolaborate<br />

withpeoplewhoalreadyhavealotmorefolowersthanyou.<br />

Oneofthebestwaystodothisisby“guestposting”onotherpopularwebsites<br />

orblogs.Ifyoueverdoaguestblogpostforanothersiteyouwanttomake<br />

suretomakethatguestblogpostasdamngoodaspossible.Youwanttotryto<br />

createasmuchvalueaspossiblebymakingitashelpful,interesting,funny,or<br />

inspirationalasyoucan.Andattheendoftheguestblogpost,includelinks<br />

backtoyourownblogandsocialmediachannels.<br />

3.Don’tdie<br />

Ithinkoneofthebeststrategiesinsocialmediaisthefolowing:Don’tdie.<br />

WhatdoImeanbythat?Wel,theproblem thatmostbloggersmakeisthat<br />

99.9% ofblogsdieafterthefirstmonth.Peoplearesimplynotcommitedor<br />

passionateenoughtoblogforthatlongofatime.<br />

NowIdon’twantyoutoconfusethisbythinkingthatyouhavetobe<br />

constantlypostingmultipletimesaday.Intheory,youcanjustpostjustoncea<br />

day,onceaweek,oronceamonth,butyoujustneedtobeconsistent.<br />

Consistencyissoimportantinsocialmediabecauseonceyoufaloutofthe<br />

consciousnessofyourfolowersorthepublic,peoplewilforgetyouandstop<br />

folowingyou.<br />

Onceyoufirststartgainingadecentamountoffolowers,youwanttoridethe<br />

gravytrain.Youhavetokeepupthehustle,andcontinuetoridethatwaveto<br />

gainmorefolowersandtogainmoreinfluence.


Growthinsocialmediaislikebuildingmuscles.Ifyouwanttoconstantlybuild<br />

muscle,youhavetoconsistently(overalongperiodoftime)gotothegym,eat<br />

therightproteins,andgetenoughrest.Youcan’tjustsitonyourassand<br />

expecttogeta6-pacorbulgingbiceps.<br />

Generalyforsocialmedia,Irecommendtryingtopostatleastonceaday.I<br />

findthatpostingmorethan3timesadayhasdiminishingreturns.Ifyoupost<br />

morethan3timesaday,peoplejustperceiveyouasspammy(basedonmy<br />

personalexperience).<br />

Peoplearecreaturesofhabits.Ifyoudrinkcoffee,canyouimaginegoingat<br />

leastonedaywithouthavingcoffee?Tomany,drinkingacupofcoffeeislikea<br />

morningritual.Sothinkabouthavingyoursocialmedianetworkslikethattry<br />

togetpeoplehookedtoyoubyconsistentlyshowingup.


4.Createepic“content”<br />

Ifyouwanttorealygainalargefolowinginsocialmediaandberecognized<br />

foryourphotography,youneedtoactualymakegreat(or“epic”)content<br />

whichincludesphotos,articles,videos,etc.Nomaterhowsavvyyouareat<br />

socialmediaormarketing,youwilnevergainahugefolowingwithout<br />

makingandsharinggreatcontent.<br />

Soifyouwantpeopletoknowyouasagreatphotographer,firstfocuson<br />

makinggreatphotographs.Howcanyoubecomeabeterphotographer?Study<br />

theworkofthemasters,buyalotofgreatphotographybooks,atend<br />

photographyclasses,seminars,orworkshops,andgethonestfeedbackand<br />

critiqueonyourwork.<br />

Iseealotofphotographerswhohaveamediocrebodyofwork,andare<br />
