In Memoriam
Marilyn Helene Spickler
Sorensen
Marilyn Sorensen, 91,
of Lake Forest, died very
peacefully at home Friday,
April 5, surrounded by
her family. She was born
May 24, 1927 in Chicago
to Helen (Williams) and
Joseph C. Spickler of Nebraska.
She was the eldest
of four siblings: Joann,
Jean, and William (Bill).
She is survived by and
“profoundly blessed and
deeply appreciative of her
three fine children, Carol
Jean, Glen Paige, and
Christopher Sorensen, her
daughter-in-law Jodilynne
Whooten Sorensen and
her dearly beloved grandson
Jackson Wilder Sorensen”.
Sorensen graduated
from Maine Township
High school, Park Ridge,
in 1944, earned a BA
from DePauw University
in 1948 and did graduate
work at Northwestern and
University of Wisconsin,
Madison then taught Junior
High and High school
English for three years.
In 1951 she married and
lived in Arlington Heights,
where she had three children
then moved to Lake
Forest in 1962. She had
various jobs including
managing a small business
and assistant administrator
of a retirement home. In
1973 she began a successful
30 year career in Lake
Forest Real Estate earning
advanced designations of
GRI - Graduate Realtors
Institute and CRS - Certified
Residential Specialist
and several awards.
As a member of the First
Presbyterian Church of
lake Forest she was in the
first graduating class of
Stephen Ministers who’s
assignments she carried
out with a high level of
care, established a Divorce
Support Group and
contributed significantly
to the establishment of the
Career Support Group. As
she walked often in the
neighborhood with her
daughter, Carol, neighbors
would see them and say
“As long as you’re walking,
take my dog!” She
enjoyed many years of
dog walking and said “I
have loved many dogs and
was greatly and enthusiastically
loved in return”.
She was greatly and enthusiastically
loved by her
family and friends as well
and will be greatly missed.
We will remember her
as patient, kind, loving,
compassionate, generous,
helpful, funny, witty, wonderful
and wise and that
she loved us, animals, blue
sky and sunshine.
Carrol Andrews Herber
Carrol Andrews Herber,
a Lake Forest resident
since 1981, died peacefully
at home on April
10. Herber was born Dec.
24, 1939 in Syracuse, NY,
where her father owned
and ran a material handling
company – Morse
Manufacturing. Upon
graduation from St. Lawrence
University, a passion
for travel led to her
Chicago-based job as a
stewardess for United Airlines.
A few years later, Herber
married Don Smith
and began her career at
home raising a family.
Since 1966, she cherished
time at the family vacation
home at Lake Skegemog
in Northern Michigan.
In 1996, Herber married
Jim Herber and moved to
the cottage on Hathaway
Circle they both adored.
They traveled the world
and touched many countries
and continents, with
a desire to learn and appreciate
cultures, history,
and nature. She was an active
member of the Presbyterian
church, serving
as an elder and deacon,
heading the annual rummage
sale security team,
knitting prayer shawls,
and expressing her love
of music through bells and
choir. Her favorite time
was whenever family and
friends were near. Her
positive, upbeat energy
was contagious – she
showed us how to celebrate
life and live gracefully
with cancer.
Herber is preceded in
death by her husband Jim
in 2013 and survived by
her children – Amy Mc-
