Imo APC elders back Uzodinma before tribunal
...seek speedy judgment on Imo North senatorial election
By Chinonso
Alozie
OWERRI—IMO State
elders council of the
All Progressives Congress,
APC, led by Edmund
Joseph Onyebuchi
yesterday, affirmed their
full support for the Imo
APC governorship
candidate, Hope
Uzodinma on his move to
challenge the outcome of
the 2019 election at the
tribunal.
Onyewuchi alongside
other APC elders and
chairmen from the 27 local
government areas met at
the party’s state secretariat
in Owerri, saying that it
would address what they
called anomalies during the
said elections.
The chairman while
reading the position of the
elders council said: “This is
a sad and melancholy
situation, for it becomes my
duty to inform you that the
elders council of the Imo
state chapter of the All
Progressives Congress,
met and deliberated
extensively on the present
day issues affecting our
party, APC.
“We support and
participate actively in
Senator Hope Uzodinma's
petition at the tribunal
because if an honour is
awarded where it is not
merited, then it has been
denied where it is justly
due.”
On the Imo North
Senatorial election, “We
appeal to the judiciary to
expedite judgement on the
Imo North Senatorial seat.
The Imo APC elders council
respect the position of
INEC with regards to the
Imo West senatorial seat
imbroglio.
“We support and assist all
candidates of APC for the
Imo House of Assembly
elections at the tribunal.
“We wish to state
categorically that we are
firmly of the opinion that the
beginning of wisdom in
Imo State politics is to fight
any clandestine
organization that operates
in a subtle way behind the
scene and influencing the
direction of election
results.
“In conclusion, the Imo
State elders council wishes
to state categorically that
no manipulation is
insuperable in Imo State.”
It was their belief that “the
election tribunal will restore
Hope Uzodinma’s
mandate given to him by
Imolites who courageously
re-affirmed their
commitment to APC, not
only as the trustee of the
future but also as the
vanguard of our national
on-going revolution under
the leadership of our
respected President
Muhammadu Buhari.
Battle for Speaker of Abia Assembly begins
By Anayo Okoli
U MUAHIA—AHEAD
of the inauguration of
the 7th Abia State House of
Assembly, the battle for who
becomes the Speaker is on
and names of ranking law
makers from Abia Central
Senatorial District where
the seat is zoned to are
currently being bandied
about.
By the unwritten microzoning
arrangement in the
state, Abia central
Senatorial District is
allocated the position of the
speaker.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu
who has been re-elected for
another four years is from
the south and his deputy,
Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu
is from the north. The
arrangement changes
when the seat of governor
moves to another zone.
Among those eyeing the
speakership seat are: the
current Speaker,
Chikwendu Kalu; the
leader of the House,
Chinedum Orji; and
Kennedy Njoku who was
elected Speaker in
December 2017 when
Martins Azubuike was
impeached but was forced
to resign less than 24
hours.
Abia Central is unique by
its composition in that it is
made up of three local
government areas of
Ngwa stock: Isiala Ngwa
North, Isiala Ngwa South
and Osisioma; and two
local government areas of
Umuahia people: Umuahia
North and Umuahia South,
while Ikwuano makes up
the other council.
Army officers undergo training
on firing in Imo
By Chinonso
Alozie
OWERRI—Over two
hundred army
officers have been trained
in weapon handling and
firing at the 34 Artillery
Brigade Command in
Owerri, Imo State.
The Public Relations
Officer, PRO, 34 Artillery
Brigade, Obinze in Owerri,
Mohammed Bawa,
confirmed this yesterday,
adding that it was part of
the 82 Division Inter
Brigade Corporal and
Below competition for 2019.
It was his opinion that the
training was in line with the
vision of the Chief of Army
Staff, to equip the troops in
order to brace up for
challenges of security
before them, as well as on
how to deal with obstacles
while on duty.
Bawa told Vanguard that
other areas in which the
hundreds of Army officers
were trained included
point-to-point map reading,
swimming, physical fitness,
obstacle crossing and drill
competition among the
soldiers.
Isiala Ngwa South. He
succeeded Martin
Azubike, also from Ngwa,
specifically Isiala Ngwa
North, who was impeached
three years ago after which,
another Ngwa law maker,
Kennedy Njoku was
pressured to resign less
than 24 hours after he was
elected to replace
impeached Azubuike.
Information pieced
together from political
stakeholders indicated that
the battle for the
speakership of the 7th Abia
House is a straight battle
between the current
Speaker, Chikwendu Kalu
and the Leader of the
House, Chinedum Orji.
The leader who is very
popular among the law
makers and influential in
the House was instrumental
Beware of conmen, HOSTCOM warns
members in Anambra
By Nwabueze
Okonkwo
O NITSHA—
MEMBERS of
Anambra State chapter of
Host Communities
Producing Oil and Gas,
HOSTCOM have been
charged to beware of
dupes who are going about
extorting them in the name
of offering them
employments.
National chairman of
HOSTCOM, Chief
Benjamin Style Tamaraebi
who gave the charge at
Aguleri in Anambra East
Local Government Area
during a familiarization
visit to officers and
members of the state
chapter, said the conmen
have been going about
extorting many people
under the pretence that they
would be made directors of
a non-existent modular
refinery in the state.
According to Tamaraebi,
“These conmen have
collected a lot of money from
many people for
employment in modular
refinery, cooperatives and
pipeline surveillance
squad, even when they
knew that all these
programmes are in the
pipeline but are yet to
materialise to warrant
employing anyone, not to
talk of paying money for
such vacancies.
“It is a pity they have
already duped many of you
here before we begin to
realize what is going on.
However, HOSTCOM will
not rest on its oars until we
clip the wings of these con
men any moment from now
as we have launched a
manhunt for them”.
current speaker. But the
people rooting for him are
arguing that it is time the
seat moves to the Umuahia
area of the district as the
current Speaker is from the
Ngwa area of the zone.
Youth devt must be taken
seriously —Obi
FORMER Governor of
Anambra State, Mr.
Peter Obi has called on
government at all levels to
take issues concerning
youths seriously.
He spoke yesterday at his
home town, Agulu, during
an interactive session with
stakeholders and the youth
of the town.
During the meeting, Obi
noted that beyond the call
on government to take care
of the youths, wealthy
individuals in every
community should show
concern about the progress
of the youths in their
various towns.
Obi who has been
speaker of the 6th
Assembly, Martins
Azubuike.
Njoku who was speaker
for only 24 hours is also said
to be showing interest so
that he could go in to fully
serve as Speaker. From
every indication, the battle
may be tight but the odds
seem to favour the leader,
Chinedum Orji.
consistent in the
empowerment of the youth
and women of his town
through various projects,
including the institution of
revolving loan scheme
among women and
purchase of buses for the
youth said he was prepared
to strengthen the scheme,
especially now he had
observed that most youths
were just in the village
drinking, smoking and
wasting their lives. “If the
government and wealthy
people do not show interest
in the progress of the
society, it will breed
anarchy in future.”
Speaking at the meeting,
the traditional ruler of
Agulu, Igwe Innocent
Obodoakor said he
shedded emotional tears
when Mr. Peter Obi called
him and requested the
meeting for the issues
regarding the youths of the
town to be discussed.
The President General of
the town, Chief Andy
Orakwue said he was the
most fortunate President
General for having a good
and noble man as Obi in
his town.
