Recipes & Gardening Tips 

All American Apple Pie 

You could make this on National Apple Pie Day May 13th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 

1/2 cup vegetable oil 

2 tablespoons cold milk 

1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar 

1 teaspoon salt 

6 Fuji apples, cored and sliced 

3/4 cup white sugar 

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 

1/2 cup all-purpose flour 

1/2 cup white sugar 

1/2 cup butter 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 

To Make Crust: In a large bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups flour, oil, milk, 

1 1/2 teaspoons sugar and salt until evenly blended. Pat mixture into 

a 9 inch pie pan, spreading the dough evenly over the bottom and up 

sides. Crimp edges of the dough around the perimeter. 

To Make Filling: Mix together 3/4 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, 

cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle over apples and toss to coat. Spread 

evenly in unbaked pie shell. 

To Make Topping: Using a pastry cutter, mix together 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 

cup sugar and butter until evenly distributed and crumbly in texture. 

Sprinkle over apples. 

Put pie in the oven on a cookie sheet to catch the juices that may spill 

over. Bake 45 minutes.

Cheesecake Day May 26th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 

3 tablespoons white sugar 

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 

1 cup white sugar 

1/4 teaspoon salt 

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 

1 (8 ounce) tub frozen whipped topping, thawed 

3 cups frozen blueberries 

DIRECTIONS: 

In a medium bowl, stir together the graham cracker crumbs and 3 

tablespoons of sugar. Mix in the melted butter. Sprinkle evenly into 

the bottom of a 9 inch square baking dish and pack down into a 

solid crust. 

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar until smooth. 

Stir in salt and lemon juice. Fold in the whipped topping until well 

blended, then fold in the frozen blueberries. Spoon over the crust 

in the baking dish and spread evenly. Cover with plastic wrap and 

refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing into squares and serving.

Gardening Tips For May 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast. 

Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals 

including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, 

sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced 

cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants, 

okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil, 

peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If 

you don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting 

here and there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular 

new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight 

sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long 

to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better 

yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to 

deter weeds from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to 

promote new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release 

organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent 

light sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! 

Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding 

spots.

Katy Heroes Honored 

by Teenagers 

Students from Tompkins High School, Tays Junior High 

and Woodcreek Junior High, have gathered together to 

honor a number of Katy teachers, coaches and community 

leaders who are ‘heroes’ to the young people. 

A special dinner and awards presentation was held by the 

youth who are all members of The Church of Jesus Christ 

of Latter-day Saints. Aged between 12 and 18, each of 

them was inspired to choose one person who has had a 

significant influence for good in their lives. The students 

then personally invited their ‘hero’ to attend the dinner. 

During the evening each of the youth gave a short speech 

to introduce their hero and explain why they had had 

such a significant impact on them. 

Among the heroes was Danny Hill, Girls Program Director 

at Albion Hurricanes FC. He was invited by Tompkins 

Junior, Terin Graham. Terin also plays for the Tompkins 

Varsity team, which is currently ranked number one in 

the nation. She was thrilled to publicly thank Danny for 

his incredible contribution to women’s soccer. Danny 

commented, “I was very touched when Terin invited me to be honored at the dinner. The best part of our job is watching these kids grow into fantastic 

young people. Terin always brings a smile to my face and when I stood there listening to her talk it gave me a great peace and understanding of why I 

still do this job. Thank you Terin and family for believing in me all those years ago and your continued belief ever since.” 

The purpose of the evening was to thank the many people in the community who sacrifice so much of their time and energy to guide and teach the 

young people in Katy. Says Brad Tippetts, one of the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Katy, “As a parent and leader, it can be 

a scary proposition to send our kids into a world that at times is full of anger and selfishness. That’s why we’re so grateful for the many good people out 

there who share in the responsibility of helping our kids grow into good, honorable adults and care enough to help build the type of character that will 

make them good citizens and strong community members.” 

Many of the students invited teachers, some brought Scout Leaders and one young man even invited his mom along to be his hero. There on the night were 

Shetye Cypher, Tina Fairwell, Leanda Hunt, Stephanie Lewis, Todd McVey, Donald Artley, Dianne Kuper, Monti Marquez, Danny Hill, Amy Wernig, Marianne 

Hudspeth, Ryleigh Gilpin, Amanda Robinson, Stephanie Mead, Holly Datwyler Ben Allsop, Mike Tinnell, Ann Batten-Bishop, Stacey Levin and Allan Ray. 

As well as hosting the dinner and each making a speech, the youth played instruments and sang a choral number for invited guests.

KISD Summer Band Camp to be Held 

at Morton Ranch High School 

The seventeenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th , 

8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Morton Ranch High 

School July 15 th -19 th . The camp will include daily section rehearsals, full 

band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is also part of the 

camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a t-shirt if registered 

by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need to include a late 

registration fee of $25 totaling $155. Any registration request after June 

28 th must be sent via email and if approved, payment MUST BE either 

cash, money order or cashier’s check. 

The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning 

at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a 

little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an 

additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks are 

included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The 

KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year and we 

anticipate a large enrollment again this year. 

Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as 

soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare 

major scales specific to the student’s instrument and an audition 

etude, which can be downloaded from the webpage. Students will be 

ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total 

enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and 

Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent Form can be downloaded by 

campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/ 

finearts. An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration 

and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before 

the camp begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on 

the registration form. 

The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those 

who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over 

the summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive 

top quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD 

and Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the seventeenth annual 

Katy ISD Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills 

sharp for the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be 

distributed to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp 

brochures can also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage. 

Plan to register early in order to guarantee a spot! Again, registrations 

requests made after June 28 th will need to follow special instructions

Katy ISD Represented at 

2019 Texas Bluebonnet Awards Event 

Each year 10 Texas library districts are represented at the Texas Library Association’s (TLA) annual conference and this year Katy Independent School 

District librarian Diane Austin, as well as 4 th grader Charlotte Baker, will be representing District 8 in addition to Katy ISD’s Wolman Elementary 

School. Charlotte will be a part of a student group who will be announcing the grand winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award. 

“I love the Texas Bluebonnet Program because not only are children motivated to read books but students have the opportunity to choose the 

winner unlike many other publishing awards,” said Diana Austin, library media specialist at Wolman Elementary. 

Twenty books are chosen each year for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, 

encouraging students in grades 3 rd -6 th to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, participating students all over the state of Texas 

cast their vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes is the winner and is given their award at the Texas Bluebonnet 

Luncheon. 


Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Awards 

Prestigious Recognitions 

to Katy ISD Students 

The artwork of 27 Katy Independent School District students has been recognized 

by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLS&R), with many of those creations 

now advancing to Grand Prix Judging and to auction. Best of Show, Gold Medal 

and Special Merit were among some of the prominent achievements of Katy ISD 

art students who have worked tirelessly to perfect their masterpieces. 

The HLS&R School Art Program provides students, Pre-K through 12 th grade, the 

opportunity to compete in district shows, earn scholarships, travel to summer 

workshops and display artwork at the Hayloft Gallery at the NRG Center for viewing. 

The Grand Prix judging consists of all the 100+ school districts and private schools 

that participate in the annual competition. Grand Prix selects which pieces of art 

will be awarded the Grand Champion, Reserve Champion and Class Champions 

recognitions. Those art pieces will then advance to the HLS&R Art Auction.

Spelling out Victory! 

W-I-N-N-E-R-S that spells Winners!! Katy Independent 

School District is proud to announce the recent 2019 

Katy ISD Spelling Bee Winners. The winning word was 

“drupaceous” which Beckendorff Junior High Keerthana 

Krishnan spelled out without hesitation. The seventhgrader 

went through a rigorous 21 rounds of competition 

to ultimately be recognized as the Spelling Bee Champion 

of Katy ISD. Memorial Parkway Junior High seventh-grader 

Beck Beathard was named the Spelling Bee Runner-up 

and Janina Ojeiduma, an eighth-grader from Seven Lakes 

Junior High was named Spelling Bee Alternate. 

Keerthana and Beck represented Katy ISD at the Houston 

Public Media Regional Spelling Bee in March. The Champion 

and Runner-up at the Regional Spelling Bee event will then 

advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington 

D.C. in May 2019. Best of luck to these students!

Ella Hummeldorf earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts 

Ella Hummeldorf, a Sophmore at Tompkins High School, has earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts. Ella is a member of Troop 127007 and has been a 

Girl Scout since she was in Kindergarten. For her project, Ella built garden boxes with the help of her brothers and a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 

1103 for Goddard Preschool in Cinco Ranch NW. Her inspiration for the garden boxes was her grandfather who is currently in bad health. Obesity is a 

growing problem in America and Ella is hoping the new generation of kids will make better choices. Her goal was to educate young children on the 

importance of eating healthy and how vegetables play a big part in that. She wanted to teach them about vegetables in a fun way so she created the 

garden boxes, supplied starter seeds and tools. She hopes they will have fun watching them grow and will teach future generations about growing 

vegetables and healthy eating. Her brother, Henry Hummeldorf, was a recent contestant on MasterChef Junior so she enlisted his help with some 

recipes. Together they created a fun cookbook for the kids and Henry talked to the children about the recipes and how to make vegetables fun. Here 

is a photo of Ella and Henry teaching the children and introducing them to their new gardens.

THE ARC OF KATY’S SUMMER DAY PROGRAM!

The Arc of Katy is currently taking applications for three Summer 

Program sessions for teens and adults with intellectual and development 

disabilities who are at least 16 years of age and meet the program’s 

minimum requirements. 


The Day Program will be held Monday through Friday, weekly, from 8 

AM-3 PM at The Arc of Katy, 5819 Tenth Street, Suite C, Katy, Texas 77493. 

Three Sessions are being held this Summer: 

Session 1… June 3-June 28, 2019 

Session 2… July 1-July 26, 2019 

Session 3… July 29-August 16, 2019 

Each session will include a variety of fun activities including excursions, 

crafts, life skills, games and much more. Summer Program cost is $35 

per day and participant must be a current member of The Arc of Katy to

LIVING WORD’S CAMP JAM 

Registration is open for Camp Jam, Living Word’s music & arts immersion 

program. The camp will run the week of June 17-21, 2019 for youth ages 

5-10. Hours are from 9 AM until 2:30 PM at Living Word’s church facilities 

at 3700 S. Mason Road, Katy. Camp Jam focuses on immersing young 

children in music, dance and art and to inspire them to continue in music 

as they grow. The classes are taught by both music professionals and 

talented laypersons from Living Word. Each child will have the opportunity 

to experience seven classes lasting 30 minutes per day, including drum 

ensemble, piano class, recorders, guitar/ukulele, art, dance and theater. 

The children will enjoy a mid-morning snack and should bring their 

own lunch. Camp starts and ends with singing and scriptural themes.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE “A Universe of Stories” - May 27 th -Aug. 31 st 

Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading challenges during 

the summer to encourage reading among readers of all ages. Library 

programs and activities begin during the week of June 3 rd and continue 

through July 27 th . There is no charge to join the Summer Reading 

Challenges (SRC) and they are open to everyone, regardless of the

books/reading time by downloading the free Beanstack Tracker app to 

their mobile device from the Apple App or Google Play stores. Fort Bend 

County Libraries and the Summer Reading Challenge will appear as 

options when the program starts on May 27 th . 

Reading rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 3 rd . Prizes 

must be collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader 

indicated on the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is 

August 31 st . The names of participants who complete the program will 

be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores - donated by 

the Friends of the Library organizations - that will be awarded to several 

lucky readers in a drawing scheduled at the end of the program at each 

library location. The Summer Reading Challenges are sponsored by 

Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that support the 

county library system and the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a 

consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s 

summer-reading program materials for public libraries. 

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE FOR CHILDREN 

Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come to 

the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs and join 

in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Children are encouraged 

to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on 

the total number of books they read or have read to them. For the first five 

books read, the child will receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a 

certificate for 10 books, a color-changing ruler for 15 books and a reading 

trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s 

name will also be written on a picture of a space shuttle to be displayed in 

that branch library. Drawings for puppets will take place weekly. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE 

Area youth in grades 6-8 can participate in the SRC by logging online the 

time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books as 

they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time 


they spend reading. Upon completion of 20 hours (1200 minutes) of 

reading, readers will receive a trophy or a mystery prize. 

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE FOR TEENS & ADULTS 

Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate 

in the YA & Adult SRC by logging online the time they spend reading 

books and by participating in optional weekly “challenges” that can be 

completed individually at home online. All YA and adult readers who 

complete the goal of reading for 1,000 minutes will earn a desk cube with 

phone accessories, while supplies last. An ultimate grand prize will be 

awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants in the YA/ 

Adult Summer Reading Challenge who complete the program by logging 

1,000 minutes of reading time will be entered into a drawing for a 16 GB 

Fire HD 7 tablet with a red case, which will be awarded to one winner in 

the library system on August 5 th .

• SCORE UNDERSTANDING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - Saturday, May 

18 th , 10:30 AM-12:30 PM, Meeting Room. SCORE mentor Cristy Fontanilla 

will explain the importance of individual components of financial 

statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, sources and 

uses of funds. Learn how the meaningful interpretation and analysis of 

these statements can be critical to the success of a business. This program 

is presented in partnership with SCORE, the non-profit mentoring arm of 

the U.S. Small Business Administration. Refreshments for this program

• SENIOR LIVING SERIES “DOWNSIZING MADE EASY-GET THE FACTS”

Cinco De Mayo Accordion Festival - May 3-5, 2019, Talento Bilingue De

of what TBH and the City of Houston have collaborated to designate as 

Tejano History Month the Cinco de Mayo Accordion Festival celebrates 

the genre and the cultural identity of the accordion and conjunto band. 

Houston Dragon Boat Festival - May 4, 2019, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, Downtown

Comedy Night at HPL - Monthly on the 3 rd Thursday, 6-8 PM. Houston 

Public Library, 500 Mckinney Avenue, Houston, TX 77002. Admission 

is free. The Houston Public Library offers “Open Mic” comedy night 

where local and non local comedians, comediennes, ventriloquists and 

impressionists of ALL ages present family comedy to the audience. Improv 

Performers from Station Theater closes out the night with games that 

involve the audience. Everyone who participates in at least one open mic 

throughout the year become eligible to participate in the Annual Comedy 

competition which is held in December. Prizes in the amounts of $100
