All American Apple Pie 

You could make this on National Apple Pie Day May 13th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 

1/2 cup vegetable oil 

2 tablespoons cold milk 

1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar 

1 teaspoon salt 

6 Fuji apples, cored and sliced 

3/4 cup white sugar 

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 

3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 

1/2 cup all-purpose flour 

1/2 cup white sugar 

1/2 cup butter 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 

To Make Crust: In a large bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups flour, oil, milk, 

1 1/2 teaspoons sugar and salt until evenly blended. Pat mixture into 

a 9 inch pie pan, spreading the dough evenly over the bottom and up 

sides. Crimp edges of the dough around the perimeter. 

To Make Filling: Mix together 3/4 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, 

cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle over apples and toss to coat. Spread 

evenly in unbaked pie shell. 

To Make Topping: Using a pastry cutter, mix together 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 

cup sugar and butter until evenly distributed and crumbly in texture. 

Sprinkle over apples. 

Put pie in the oven on a cookie sheet to catch the juices that may spill 

over. Bake 45 minutes.

INGREDIENTS: 

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 

3 tablespoons white sugar 

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 

1 cup white sugar 

1/4 teaspoon salt 

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 

1 (8 ounce) tub frozen whipped topping, thawed 

3 cups frozen blueberries 

DIRECTIONS: 

In a medium bowl, stir together the graham cracker crumbs and 3 

tablespoons of sugar. Mix in the melted butter. Sprinkle evenly into 

the bottom of a 9 inch square baking dish and pack down into a 

solid crust. 

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar until smooth. 

Stir in salt and lemon juice. Fold in the whipped topping until well 

blended, then fold in the frozen blueberries. Spoon over the crust 

in the baking dish and spread evenly. Cover with plastic wrap and 

refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing into squares and serving.

Gardening Tips For May 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast. 

Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals 

including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, 

sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced 

cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants, 

okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil, 

peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If 

you don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting 

here and there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular 

new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight 

sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long 

to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better 

yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to 

deter weeds from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to 

promote new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release 

organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent 

light sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! 

Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding 

spots.

Pool Access Cards 

Any homeowner needing an access card should contact Sharon 

Vetrone at Crest Management - 281-946-4616 or sharon.vetrone@crestmanagement.com. 

The pool is open Tuesday-Sunday year around from 

10 AM-10 PM, except in freezing weather conditions. The Woodcreek 

Reserve pool is unguarded. 

Board Meetings 

Should you desire to receive notice of your community Board meetings, 

go to www.crest-management.com, click on “communities,” then click 

on the link to your community and you may register there. 

Helpul Information 

Pool and Tennis Courts: To obtain a gate access card to the pool and 

tennis courts, complete the enclosed “gate access card request” form 

and return it to our office. The pool and tennis courts are located at 26519 

Kingsland Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. 

Pool Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 9:00 AM thru 10:00 PM 

Monday: Closed for cleaning (unless Monday is a holiday, then the pool 

will be closed Tuesday) 

Tennis Court Hours: Everyday 5:00 AM thru 11:00 PM 

Car Stickers: The car stickers are to be placed on the upper corner of 

the windshield on the passenger side of your automobile. Please make 

note on your “gate access request form” how many stickers are needed 

for your family. These stickers are numbered for accountability and are 

tied to your address. You must take the stickers off and mail them back 

to Crest Management when you move from the community or sell the 

vehicle. The stickers will not be reused, but this will keep unauthorized 

persons from visiting the community without being noticed. 

Keeping Your Family Informed: Our office would like to gather 100% of 

all homeowners email addresses for easy notification of any community 

updates, alerts and meeting notices. In the body of your email provide 

your name, mailing address and phone number. Thank you for helping

as easily as being a “nosy neighbor?” If you have not already done so, 

talk to the neighbors next to you, across the street and down the street. 

Introduce yourself; get to know them and who lives in the household. 

Encourage them to do the same and pledge to watch out for each other. 

Don’t hesitate to report suspicious persons to the City of Katy Police or 

Fort Bend Co. Sheriffs and don’t assume someone else will do it. Reports 

from citizens are the best sources of information for law enforcement. 

They can best help us if we help them. Emergencies or crimes in progress 

should be immediately reported to “911.” Non-emergency calls should

the development of the community, as they represent their sections at 

WoodCreek Reserve CAI Board meetings. If you would like to volunteer

Trash & Recycling Information 

Trash day is on Wednesday and you should place your trash at the curb 

in the receptacle provided by Republic Waste. Please note you may 

also place lawn debris in trash bags and bundled and tied limbs at curb 

for pick up. Heavy trash day will also be on 2 nd and 4 th Monday of the 

month. There has been no change to the recycling schedule, which will 

remain on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of the month. Republic Services is 

providing a blue 95-gallon cart for recycling. If you need a cart, please call 

Republic Services and they will provide one with no additional charge. 

• Set the cart within 5 feet from the curb by 7:00 AM 

• Wheel-side of cart should face home and the cart opening toward the 

street 

• Do not overfill the cart; the lid must be closed 

• Minimum distance of 3 feet from any obstacle (car, mailbox, heavy 

trash, etc.) 

Heavy trash will be collected 2 nd and 4 th Monday of the month for those 

items that will not fit in your trash containers. 

• Heavy Trash: Appliances, hot water heaters, mattresses, heavy or large 

volumes of bagged yard waste and other white goods appropriate for 

disposal, shall be placed within five feet of the curbside and will be 

collected on the same day as your regular trash. 

• All branches and tree limbs must be cut to 4 foot lengths and tied in 

small bundles that can be lifted and handled by a single person. Bundles 

should be no larger than eighteen inches in diameter and weigh no more 

than forty pounds. 

• Refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers or items that contain CFC’s 

(Freon), by law must have the gas removed by a licensed technician and 

be red tagged prior to collection. 

• Reminder that trashcans are to be stored out of public view, except for 

on designated trash days. This helps keep the community looking good. 

Republic Services will collect and dispose of all your residential garbage 

unless restricted by law or if the item would cause damage to the 

collection equipment. Listed are some items that are restricted: cross 

ties, tires, solvents, paint, petroleum products, pool chemicals, fertilizer, 

herbicides, pesticides, hazardous materials/chemicals, logs or stumps, 

car batteries, soil, rocks, concrete, carpet, carpet padding, construction 

material, medical waste, medical sharps and closed containers.

open Monday-Friday 7AM to 5PM and on Saturday 8AM to Noon. Please

KISD Summer Band Camp to be Held 

at Morton Ranch High School 

The seventeenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th , 

8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Morton Ranch High 

School July 15 th -19 th . The camp will include daily section rehearsals, full 

band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is also part of the 

camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a t-shirt if registered 

by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need to include a late 

registration fee of $25 totaling $155. Any registration request after June 

28 th must be sent via email and if approved, payment MUST BE either 

cash, money order or cashier’s check.

The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning 

at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a 

little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an 

additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks are 

included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The 

KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year and we 

anticipate a large enrollment again this year. 

Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as 

soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare 

major scales specific to the student’s instrument and an audition 

etude, which can be downloaded from the webpage. Students will be 

ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total 

enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and 

Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent Form can be downloaded by 

campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/ 

finearts. An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration 

and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before

Katy ISD Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills

2019 Texas Bluebonnet Awards Event 

Each year 10 Texas library districts are represented at the Texas Library Association’s (TLA) annual conference and this year Katy Independent School 

District librarian Diane Austin, as well as 4 th grader Charlotte Baker, will be representing District 8 in addition to Katy ISD’s Wolman Elementary 

School. Charlotte will be a part of a student group who will be announcing the grand winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award. 

“I love the Texas Bluebonnet Program because not only are children motivated to read books but students have the opportunity to choose the 

winner unlike many other publishing awards,” said Diana Austin, library media specialist at Wolman Elementary. 

Twenty books are chosen each year for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, 

encouraging students in grades 3 rd -6 th to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, participating students all over the state of Texas 

cast their vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes is the winner and is given their award at the Texas Bluebonnet 

Luncheon. 


Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Awards 

Prestigious Recognitions 

to Katy ISD Students 

The artwork of 27 Katy Independent School District students has been recognized 

by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLS&R), with many of those creations 

now advancing to Grand Prix Judging and to auction. Best of Show, Gold Medal 

and Special Merit were among some of the prominent achievements of Katy ISD 

art students who have worked tirelessly to perfect their masterpieces. 

The HLS&R School Art Program provides students, Pre-K through 12 th grade, the 

opportunity to compete in district shows, earn scholarships, travel to summer 

workshops and display artwork at the Hayloft Gallery at the NRG Center for viewing. 

The Grand Prix judging consists of all the 100+ school districts and private schools 

that participate in the annual competition. Grand Prix selects which pieces of art 

will be awarded the Grand Champion, Reserve Champion and Class Champions 

recognitions. Those art pieces will then advance to the HLS&R Art Auction.

Spelling out Victory! 

W-I-N-N-E-R-S that spells Winners!! Katy Independent 

School District is proud to announce the recent 2019 

Katy ISD Spelling Bee Winners. The winning word was 

“drupaceous” which Beckendorff Junior High Keerthana 

Krishnan spelled out without hesitation. The seventhgrader 

went through a rigorous 21 rounds of competition 

to ultimately be recognized as the Spelling Bee Champion 

of Katy ISD. Memorial Parkway Junior High seventh-grader 

Beck Beathard was named the Spelling Bee Runner-up 

and Janina Ojeiduma, an eighth-grader from Seven Lakes 

Junior High was named Spelling Bee Alternate. 

Keerthana and Beck represented Katy ISD at the Houston 

Public Media Regional Spelling Bee in March. The Champion 

and Runner-up at the Regional Spelling Bee event will then 

advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington 

D.C. in May 2019. Best of luck to these students!

Scouting News 

Ella Hummeldorf earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts 

Ella Hummeldorf, a Sophmore at Tompkins High School, has earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts. Ella is a member of Troop 127007 and has been a 

Girl Scout since she was in Kindergarten. For her project, Ella built garden boxes with the help of her brothers and a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 

1103 for Goddard Preschool in Cinco Ranch NW. Her inspiration for the garden boxes was her grandfather who is currently in bad health. Obesity is a 

growing problem in America and Ella is hoping the new generation of kids will make better choices. Her goal was to educate young children on the 

importance of eating healthy and how vegetables play a big part in that. She wanted to teach them about vegetables in a fun way so she created the 

garden boxes, supplied starter seeds and tools. She hopes they will have fun watching them grow and will teach future generations about growing 

vegetables and healthy eating. Her brother, Henry Hummeldorf, was a recent contestant on MasterChef Junior so she enlisted his help with some 

recipes. Together they created a fun cookbook for the kids and Henry talked to the children about the recipes and how to make vegetables fun. Here 

is a photo of Ella and Henry teaching the children and introducing them to their new gardens.

National Scavenger Hunt Day May 24th 

What is a Scavenger Hunt? A scavenger hunt is a game in which 

individuals or teams seek to find a number of specific items or perform 

tasks, as given in a list. The goal is either to complete the list first or to 

complete the list in the most creative manner. This game is usually 

played in a manner where what you are searching for requires you to go 

to certain places, certain homes or certain parts of a location. Scavenger 

Hunt Games are popular all over the world and are enjoyed by group 

organizations, at Holidays and fun parties. 

Scavenger Hunts can be set up for any age group with any type of theme. 

There can be Holiday themes such as Halloween or Christmas, there can 

be food themes such as scavenger hunts for food ingredients as in baking 

a pie. There can be scavenger hunts pertaining to getting a certain thing 

accomplished first. 

For example: “Pot A Plant Theme” - This would be considered a task game and 

an item game. You would be seeking items to perform a small task at the end. 

Your list should include all the things to completely pot up a plant. Such as. ... 

a 1. plant, 2. soil, 3. pot, 4. watering can with water in it, 5. fertilizer. You would 

have to collect each of these things or find each of these things from different 

sources. (And NO you cannot buy any from the store, that is cheating). Once 

your team makes it back with all the items you would then start potting up 

your plant. Once done, the first team to water the plant would be the winner.

THE ARC OF KATY’S SUMMER DAY PROGRAM!

The Arc of Katy is currently taking applications for three Summer 

Program sessions for teens and adults with intellectual and development 

disabilities who are at least 16 years of age and meet the program’s 

minimum requirements. 


The Day Program will be held Monday through Friday, weekly, from 8 

AM-3 PM at The Arc of Katy, 5819 Tenth Street, Suite C, Katy, Texas 77493. 

Three Sessions are being held this Summer:

Session 2… July 1-July 26, 2019

LIVING WORD’S CAMP JAM 

Registration is open for Camp Jam, Living Word’s music & arts immersion 

program. The camp will run the week of June 17-21, 2019 for youth ages 

5-10. Hours are from 9 AM until 2:30 PM at Living Word’s church facilities 

at 3700 S. Mason Road, Katy. Camp Jam focuses on immersing young 

children in music, dance and art and to inspire them to continue in music 

as they grow. The classes are taught by both music professionals and 

talented laypersons from Living Word. Each child will have the opportunity 

to experience seven classes lasting 30 minutes per day, including drum 

ensemble, piano class, recorders, guitar/ukulele, art, dance and theater. 

The children will enjoy a mid-morning snack and should bring their 

own lunch. Camp starts and ends with singing and scriptural themes.

Katy Heroes Honored 

by Teenagers 

Students from Tompkins High School, Tays Junior High 

and Woodcreek Junior High, have gathered together to 

honor a number of Katy teachers, coaches and community 

leaders who are ‘heroes’ to the young people. 

A special dinner and awards presentation was held by the 

youth who are all members of The Church of Jesus Christ 

of Latter-day Saints. Aged between 12 and 18, each of 

them was inspired to choose one person who has had a 

significant influence for good in their lives. The students 

then personally invited their ‘hero’ to attend the dinner. 

During the evening each of the youth gave a short speech 

to introduce their hero and explain why they had had 

such a significant impact on them. 

Among the heroes was Danny Hill, Girls Program Director 

at Albion Hurricanes FC. He was invited by Tompkins 

Junior, Terin Graham. Terin also plays for the Tompkins 

Varsity team, which is currently ranked number one in 

the nation. She was thrilled to publicly thank Danny for 

his incredible contribution to women’s soccer. Danny 

commented, “I was very touched when Terin invited me to be honored at the dinner. The best part of our job is watching these kids grow into fantastic 

young people. Terin always brings a smile to my face and when I stood there listening to her talk it gave me a great peace and understanding of why I 

still do this job. Thank you Terin and family for believing in me all those years ago and your continued belief ever since.” 

The purpose of the evening was to thank the many people in the community who sacrifice so much of their time and energy to guide and teach the 

young people in Katy. Says Brad Tippetts, one of the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Katy, “As a parent and leader, it can be 

a scary proposition to send our kids into a world that at times is full of anger and selfishness. That’s why we’re so grateful for the many good people out 

there who share in the responsibility of helping our kids grow into good, honorable adults and care enough to help build the type of character that will 

make them good citizens and strong community members.”

Cinco De Mayo Accordion Festival - May 3-5, 2019, Talento Bilingue De 

Houston, 333 South Jensen, Houston, TX 77003. Admission: $10. As part 

of what TBH and the City of Houston have collaborated to designate as 

Tejano History Month the Cinco de Mayo Accordion Festival celebrates 

the genre and the cultural identity of the accordion and conjunto band. 

Houston Dragon Boat Festival - May 4, 2019, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, Downtown 

Houston, Allen’s Landing, 1005 Commerce St., Houston, TX 77002. Free 

admission. The Buffalo Bayou will be overflowing with people and boats 

at the Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival. More than 30 corporate and 

community teams will paddle their way in the waters of downtown Houston 

with other festivities celebrating Asian and Asian-American culture. 

Mediterranean Festival 2019 - May 4, 2019, 11 AM-7 PM, located 

between St. Elizabeth Parking Garage & The Wellness Center, 690 N. 15 th 

Street Beaumont, Beaumont, TX 77702. This annual fundraiser for St. 

Michael’s Church features authentic Greek and Arabic foods available a 

la carte from a variety of vendors throughout the fair grounds. Along with 

food, families can enjoy camel rides, face painting, games and other fun 

activities. Greek and Arabic dance troops perform throughout the day. 

Rails & Tails Mudbug Festival - May 4, 2019, 11 AM-8 PM, 1907

Comedy Night at HPL - Monthly on the 3 rd Thursday, 6-8 PM. Houston

is free. The Houston Public Library offers “Open Mic” comedy night 

where local and non local comedians, comediennes, ventriloquists and 

impressionists of ALL ages present family comedy to the audience. Improv 

Performers from Station Theater closes out the night with games that

throughout the year become eligible to participate in the Annual Comedy
