Ifirst heard this phrase from The Boss - Bruce Springsteen in his hit Broadway concert
residency at the Walter Kerr Theater in New York City. These wonderfully poetic words hit a
chord with me. What a profound, yet simple way to express a life’s purpose. I loved it so much,
I have adopted it as my own. Thank you Bruce. I hope I do it justice.
Implement Like The World
Is Watching Why I Wrote This Book
Many people have gone before
us and experienced those
moments where projects
stumble, teams lose interest,
momentum falters, results
run in the other direction,
and plans get thrown out the window. And that’s
just on one day in ‘project land.’ And despite
all the usual challenges, they, their teams and
their projects have triumphed. How? Projects
are a funny game. They are part ‘art’ and part
‘science’. But there is one key factor that is often
overlooked but resides in the heart of every
project’s success. That is ‘lived experience’.
The lessons we learn usually show up when the
s**t has hit the fan, things are taking longer
than they should, results aren’t what they should
be, the wrong people are on the team, external
forces come into play or my personal favorite
when project budgets are cut.
Whether it’s business or personal, would it
be useful to find some of the lessons before it
happens to you and your project?
The pursuit of projects is universal. We all
have them, so we may as well get good at them
whether they be business, personal or service or
community projects, paid or volunteer.
The wisdom of the crowd is important, because
very few people and particularly business
owners, get the chance, or pursue the chance
to get project training and rather will learn and
hone their skills in a self-taught, experiential,
on the job environment. After leading, managing
and delivering 100’s of projects over a 20+
year career in education, retail, sport, and
entertainment, I have taken both the traditional
and nontraditional approaches to learn about
projects. I did take the opportunity to seek out
professional certification in
global project management
standards through the Project
Management Institute, the
most recognized body for
project professionals, highly
recommended for anyone
who wants to grasp the very
big body of knowledge that
is our project management
profession. I also sought out
professional certification
with the Australian Institute
of Project Management as
a Master Project Director
and through that had the
opportunity to document and
case study some of the projects
I had done and to demonstrate
what I had learned.
And then there was some
pretty cool employment
opportunities along the
way, starting out teaching
secondary school level,
moving into the world
of sport and event
management, becoming
Executive producer for
Walt Disney Live events
in Asia-Pac and then
learning the world of retail
from the ground up on
the shop floor to heading
up a national Business
Improvement division
for a multi-billion dollar
Australian company. And
now as I branch out with
my own force for good
13

company, World Projects, I get to
coach, teach, write, speak and work
with entrepreneurs and individuals
who have important business and
personal projects to deliver that are
going to make a real difference. All my
career, projects followed me. What I
learned is that the issues people face
with their project are essentially the
same, regardless of scale, budgets,
resources, ability or experience.
What’s The Book About?
Sometimes, it can simply be a few
words, a phrase or one teachable
moment, that will stay with you
forever. We remember these
moments. We treasure the lesson,
the wisdom that was passed on and
we, in turn, should continue to pass
it on. Sometimes, there’s merely a
quote you hear, that can trigger a
profound shift in your thinking about
a situation. What a gift that is, for that
person to have shared that.
I have had many of these in
my life, and this book is a
compilation of many simple,
but profound teachings I
received from mentors, key
influencers, peers, my teams
and friends, all in the midst of
a ‘project conversation.’ And to
keep it simple, the 100 wisdom
tips in this book are all onepagers!
Thank you to the wise
ones in my life. I owe you a
debt of gratitude for teaching
me things I didn’t know I
needed to know but were
kindly and sometimes bluntly
pointed out to me at the time. I
am now paying it forward.
This book is for anyone who has
a project to deliver and wants
a heads up on how to approach
their next project to maximise
their success
WORDS OF
Project Tip #3
Stick to your vision.
Create a high viewpoint.
At the top of a mountain, the view is different from the base.
Not better, just different.
By creating a strong and powerful high viewpoint of your
mission, your idea, the impact you want to have, we have
something to hang onto it. When the doubt creeps in, when
rocks land in our way, the wind changes,
we sabotage ourselves.
High viewpoints are used to step back and peruse the
landscape and remind yourself
that anything is possible, our job is not always
to figure out the how, but it is to stay connected to the vision.
At the base, it’s all in front of us - the fifty
million steps we need to take
“The view from up here is amazing” - that is actually how we
need to feel about the work we are doing.
15
Our vision for what we are about to do or are doing or have
done should be that compelling, that it’s not negotiable.
It should ignite your soul, get you off the couch, wake you up
in the early hours of the morning with answers and insights
that just weren’t there the night before.
Our vision for what’s possible should propel us forward,
accelerate our curiosity and the need to learn and figure this
out.
There should be a sense of impatience in getting there because
it is just so frickin’ fantastic.
Otherwise why we would bother.
If it not a hell yes, then it should be hell no.
Find a way to stay connected to your dream every day.
Project Tip #17
wisdom!
WORDS OF
WHY NOW?
What’s the trigger for why your
project is important all of a sudden?
There is usually a trigger for taking on a new project. It usually arises for a reason. At a certain point, that issue or idea
has become a higher priority than it was before and it needs our focus and resources. It is important we recognize what
that is so that we can be aware of why we need to perhaps shift our priorities around to accommodate this new project.
There are four likely types of triggers for a
project becoming a priority;
1. An external event has just happened, i.e., something new that changed our current reality, i.e., loss of a
job, a promotional offer to do something, a threat to our business has emerged
2. An external request, i.e., someone has asked us to or invited us to do something
3. Our own internal turmoil, i.e., this issue is causing us a particular stress such as lack of money or don’t
want to let someone else down, or we really need to get something finished so we can move forward.
Perhaps we are feeling unfulfilled.
4. A conscious choice, i.e., we have considered what we are doing and realize that we can and will switch
up our priorities.
The first three triggers are ones that we
will feel a certain lack of control over and
maybe forcing ourselves into taking on a
project as a priority.
The fourth one is where we really want to play. This is
where we make conscious and considered choices about
where we are spending our time and on what. Create
your own trigger for taking on your project.
Being someone who
loves to action can
have its drawbacks.
It is sometimes
overwhelming
because there is a
long list of tasks accumulating. I’d
often work on a task for the simple
fact “it was at least doing something”.
Since being introduced to the Now,
Soon, Later method it has changed
everything. In just 5 minutes I can
clearly map out the most important
tasks that I need to do NOW that will
get me closer to my goal, the tasks
that are important, but in the scheme
of things can be completed SOON and
the tasks that are important, but can
be completed LATER down the track.
This simple method has provided a
clear path to getting things done in
fast time.”
To be honest, Alison,
I really felt that you
listened to my dream
and my wonderful,
scattered thoughts of
potentiality. The whole
she-bang. Then, with (your superpowers
patience) you enabled me to lasso those
thoughts and funnel them into a doable
project plan with your Now Soon
Later concept. What a fantastic tool
for organizing my ideas, defining roles,
prioritizing tasks, and making the process
of project fruition a joy again; it’s priceless!
And as my accountability coach, your
continued support and guidance will be
most welcome. I can’t wait to check in
joy as I see the foundation of my success
help of you, a true visionary and my new
I love what you do. I love what I do. And
I worked with Ali to come up with a plan
of attack for an incredibly busy time of our
business and wondering how we were going
to get it all done without ruining our health
and wellbeing at the same time. Her simple,
structured, logical and common sense
approach, gave me the confidence and clarity to move ahead
confidently and to be able to lead my company through what
seemed like an insurmountable period. Getting it out of my head
made all the difference and into a plan I wanted to follow,
was invaluable.
Alison’s Planning Day was an incredible
opportunity to jumpstart problem-solving
a challenging issue that our not for profit
organization was experiencing. The structure
made it so simple to identify the key aspects of
the issue and create an extremely specific and
targeted plan for the next six months. What I didn’t expect was
how relevant the project structures and strategies that Alison
presented would be for our entire organization, from the board to
our program participants. The tools were so concise and simple
and yet have the ability to yield a high-level result, it has really
opened my eyes to utilizing tools from the project world in the
not for profit disability sector. In the weeks, that have followed
the Planning Day, our organization has been able to effectively
implement the plan that was created and has already adopted the
tools within our Board of Directors. We look forward to trialing
these tools throughout our entire organization in the coming
months and are very excited about being able to improve the
consistency and quality of our programs.”
Project Style
Why I Wrote This Book
“There’s only one way to
do it; with full attention
and all your heart.” 11 August 2016
Arianna Huffington on stepping down from Huffington Post
and the announcement of the launch of Thrive Global,
Clarity appeared on a Fat Burger
napkin in LA. In October 2017, I
was sitting in Fat Burger in LA
with my friend Kim Dixon who is
a woman on a mission like me to
make an impact doing what we
love and are good at. Kim was asking me about
a project she had going on and I found myself
sharing some thoughts about what her next
steps could be and realized that maybe if I put
this down on paper, I could maybe share what I
knew with more people and perhaps help more
projects to become unstuck.
I thought wouldn’t it be good if I had a simple
one-page framework that I could share, after all,
I like to keep things super simple. Projects can
get complicated and navigating where to go next
is often the stumbling block. Knowing your next
steps is a core function on any project. So one
thing I know for sure is that projects rarely go
in a straight line, yet that is how we are taught
to plan for them. If you have a project to deliver
right now, where do you go for help and advice?
It’s tricky because projects are so common, but
training for them is so uncommon if you are not
doing projects as your main gig.
Doin’ It Project Style is a must read for anyone
with a project to deliver. This is the simplest
view of how projects actually work. It is project
school, without the boring bits!
My Start. Do. Finish model featured in this
book is a ‘no sugar, low carb’ version of project
management easily digestible and good for your
overall health, because it’s easily repeatable,
daily, weekly, monthly and you can dose up on
it when you have an important
project to deliver. The super
simple framework applies to any
project - life or business. We have
yet to find one that it doesn’t fit
- if you find one, let us know and
we will figure that out too. We all
have projects, so may as well get
really good at them.
What’s The Book About?
We will give you some formal
training to give you an
uplift in project literacy and
understanding – language,
meanings, facts, information.
We have a section for you on
The Project Basics. It’s not going
to overwhelm, it just provides a
good foundation of knowledge to
carry with you. I promise you a
little knowledge is a good thing.
We will act as your personal
project coach and seek to find
out where you and your project
is at, what challenges you may be
facing and offer some strategies
and simple shifts you can make
to help you move forward. We
will stand right beside you in
the trenches with you and your
project and give you a proven
roadmap to follow and recognize
what happens when and what
to watch out for. This book is
designed to be read in small
chunks, put down, picked up
22

again, put down, picked up again and
to be bent, scribbled on, shoved in
laptop bags, read on planes, swiped
through on phones and tablets,
listened to whilst you are out walking,
playing in the background whilst you
are cooking dinner or on the treadmill
at the gym – audio* 1 version coming
soon. It’s low-cost professional
development for your team because
having one common language on a
project is key to team engagement
and this book provides some pretty
simple language and visuals that
teams can adopt and make their own.
It’s an unapologetically simple for
beginners as well has clearly marked
advanced strategies for the
more experienced.
This book is for those of you with no
project experience or training as well
as friendly reminders for those of you
who are well versed and experienced
in the discovering, designing,
deciding and doing of projects.
Good luck with your projects!
