In addition, the significance of investors in the area has been
noted as well with interviewees stating that five years ago was the
point where rapid investments started taking place (Panama 2019,
Indonesian Tapas & Bar, 2019). In addition, it was noted that the
vast majority of these come from foreign investors and their
interest in Canggu is only growing (Deus, 2019; Gado Gado, 2019;
Manggis, 2019; Panama, 2019). As a consequence, it can be
deducted that some businesses have expanded into offering more
than one product/service. This is a current trend and the growing
demand of visitors coming to Canggu can be justified as a reasons
why businesses have made this decision.
What is more, as mentioned beforehand, one of the trends
currently present in Canggu, is the healthy lifestyle. Bearing this
trend in mind, MLOs have adapted (or are planning to adapt) to
the needs and wants of the market segments. This is done by, for
example, adhering the preferences in terms of menus including
vegetarian and vegan – friendly dishes (Como, 2019; Deus 2019;
Vault, 2019).
Along with this trend, businesses have acknowledged the need to be
environmentally sustainable. This is evidenced by organisations
switching to alternatives of using plastic, and instead switching to the
use of non-plastic materials (Como, 2019; Deus, 2019; Indonesia Tapas
& Bar, 2019; Elora Hardy Design Architect, 2019; Finns Beach Club,
2019; Lalasa Villas, 2019, Panama Restaurant, 2019, Thurman, 2019;
Tropical Nomad Co-Working Space, 2019). It is worth to note that
sustainability is not only related to reducing the use of plastic materials,
but also recycling (Tropical Nomad Co-working Space, 2019), the use of
solar power instead of electricity (Tropical Nomad Co-working Space,
2019), and controlled growth and development (Como, 2019; Lalasa
Villas, 2019; Tropical Nomad Co-working Space, 2019).
Moreover, a major development in term of markets noticed by the vast
majority of interviewed representatives of MLOs was the substantial
growth of the Russian market segment (Deus, 2019; Indonesian Tapas &
Bar, 2019; Koa Surfer Hotel, 2019; Lalasa Villas, 2019; Thurman, 2019;
Vault, 2019). Apart from Russians, some MLOs have noted the potential
increase in the number of visitor arrivals from China, as sophisticated
individual travellers rather than the traditional Chinese tour packages
(Gado Gado, 2019; Alilla, 2019; Lalasa Villas, 2019, Manggis, 2019).
These two markets are of substantial importance, largely due to the fact
that, as noted by UNWTO, these two markets, represented by Russia
and Chinese respectively, occupy the positions within the top 10 tourists
with the largest expenditure. More specifically, the Chinese market
segment takes the lead as the number one market segment in terms of
expenditure, while the Russian occupies the eight position (China
Daily.com, 2018).
