HEARTHSTONE YARD OF THE MONTH
T.S. Eliott famously wrote, “April is the cruelest month.” One lovely
exception is the lush garden bordering the facade of 14955 Sandalfoot,
home of Karen and Joe Bruccoliere. Even the back yard golf course
gardens negate Eliott’s opinion as well. Cascading tiered rows of color
include Snapdragons, Dusty Miller, Flax Lillies, Indian Hawthorns,
Lugustrums, Nandinas and Day Lillies. Stay tuned to see if April showers
bring May flowers!
REMINDER:
Please be mindful of the Harris County Leash Law and be certain that
your pets are on a leash when not confined to your home or backyard.
STOP THAT BARKING
Many dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief
in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. But, nothing is
as annoying as incessant barking - even for dog lovers. If your dog is a
yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas
to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem!
Help is as close as the Yellow Pages. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight
into why your dog barks so much or what it is trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, antibarking
collar and costs about the same. Available on the web and in pet
stores.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or
confining it to a crate can cut down on the disturbance to neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street
noise or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship
- a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting
service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility
once or twice a week.
Keep in mind that dogs who bark from loneliness or boredom, may not
do it when you are home. Meanwhile, your neighbors may be getting
serenaded while you are away.
LOST & FOUND PETS IN
HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with
their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each
dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have
machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help
found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like
you see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light
poles along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the
pole number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number
facing the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or
staying on during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage
(Google streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do
it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to
Inframark at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report
it, so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
TRASH DAYS
Trash days are Tuesdays and Fridays with recycling pickup on Fridays. If
you have questions, call 281-368-8397.
BOARD MEETING
Board Meetings are now bi-monthly, usually on the 3 rd Wednesday at 7:00
PM. Hearthstone Country Club.
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use
design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news,
quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association
please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It
HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR
MODIFICATIONS
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep
in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written
approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to
customercare@inframark.com.
The call center main number is 281-870-0585. The hours are 7 AM to 6 PM
Monday through Thursday and 7 AM to 5 PM on Fridays.
SAFETY TIPS -
AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do
not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is
anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any
vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your
street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at
home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police
catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that
you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be
home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them
out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age,
they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is
there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later).
Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never
open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything
from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into
your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain
sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your
cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first
contacts).
HEARTHSTONE
GARDEN CLUB
ALL ABOUT HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB!
• The Hearthstone Garden Club was founded in 1978. We are now in our
41 st year.
• We meet the third Tuesday* of the month (August through May) at 6:30
PM in the Main Dining Room of the country club. All interested residents
and non-resident friends are invited to join us for a social time, a gardenrelated
program and our business meeting. (*November meeting is
often moved up one week and the December meeting is usually held in
a member home.)
• Our garden club is a member of the Houston Federation of Garden
Clubs, Texas Garden Clubs (District IV) and National Garden Clubs (South
Central Region). Our club has received awards and recognition at each
of these levels in the past for our newsletters, yearbooks, scrapbooks,
flower show schedules, community involvement, monetary donations
and Arbor Day celebrations.
NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION
• Our garden club has planted nearly every tree along Huffmeister Road
and nearly two dozen at Hearthstone Park. In our early years, garden club
members spent every penny on trees and watered these trees manually
with buckets of water and garden hoses. The club plants a tree each year
in celebration of Arbor Day.
• The garden club does not plant any of the seasonal bedding plants
in the common areas or make any recommendations to the landscape
company that does. We do, however, maintain a Friendship Garden at
Hearthstone Park, where we do plant bedding plants. (This flowerbed is
currently under major renovation.)
• The garden club holds an annual Plant Sale the first or second Saturday
morning of November at Hearthstone Park. We publicize this event and
offer residents an opportunity to pre-order top-quality bedding plants in
the exact colors and quantities desired for their yards. We offer delivery
to residents who are out of town on the sale date.
• In the early 90’s, the garden club sponsored an “Adopt a Cul-de-Sac”
program where club members and interested residents could prune,
water, plant flowers and more in a cul-de-sac island. This program ended
shortly after its inception when the landscape firm chosen by the HOA
took over maintenance of the cul-de-sacs.
• The garden club provided the funds for the construction of the bulletin
board at Hearthstone Park, but members do not personally post on
this board. Announcements are sent to the subdivision management
company for posting.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
• Since 1998, our garden club has awarded over $90,000 in college
scholarships to 83 Texas students pursuing a degree in a horticulturerelated
major.
• Garden Club members support Cypress Assistance Ministries with an
annual food drive and winter coat drive. We also support CAM at holiday
time with baking baskets and gift cards for teens.
• During our history, our club has always supported a nursing home.
Currently, members volunteer at Grace Care Cypress on Huffmeister.
• Garden Club members volunteer in the garden therapy greenhouses at
The Brookwood Community in Brookshire several times a year. Our club
has been recognized for our involvement and donations to Brookwood.
The garden club invites you to join us as we kick off our 2019-2020 year
at our Annual Ice Cream Social and Plant Exchange on Tuesday, August
20 th , at 6:30 PM at the country club. We would love to have you join our
group. For more information, please contact Carol Boyd, 2019-2020 club
president, at c_boyd_tat@yahoo.com.
HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB
CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY
The Hearthstone Garden Club held its annual Arbor Day celebration on
Saturday, March 2 nd , at Hearthstone Park. The day honored Helen Smith,
a former and long-time resident of Hearthstone and garden club member.
The garden club, now in its forty-first year, has planted dozens of trees
throughout the years, primarily in the Park and all along Huffmeister, in
their mission to beautify our neighborhood.
Two Chinese fringe trees were planted at this annual event of the garden
club. The trees were planted at the east entrance to the park. One was
donated by the garden club and one was a gift from the Hearthstone
Homeowner’s Association. The garden club is very thankful for the
support of our homeowner’s association in our beautification efforts.
The celebration was attended by about 50 people, including garden
club members, Hearthstone residents, members of Cub Scout Pack 1187
and many of Helen Smith’s family and friends. The scouts presented
our nation’s flag, led those gathered in the Pledge of Allegiance and
performed a reading entitled “Trees of the Fragrant Forest.” The garden
club wishes to thank Pack 1187 for participating in our Arbor Day
celebration this year.
Helen Smith, a resident of Hearthstone for more than 35 years who is
planning a move soon to the Pacific Northwest, was surprised to receive
the accolade and accepted the honor with her typical southern charm
and grace. Members of the garden club and friends shared stories of their
friendship with Helen.
A brunch reception followed at the home of club member and former
club president Susan Fruit-Draughon, where the celebration and
remembrances continued.
All attendees received a loblolly pine seedling to plant at their home to aid
Mother Earth in combatting global warming, cleansing the atmosphere
and beautifying their surroundings. Residents may view and enjoy the
many trees that have been planted over the years by the garden club in a
Exchange Student HOSTING FAQs
What does hosting mean? Hosting means you open your heart and
home to a teenager from another country. You provide the same loving,
caring environment for them as you do a member of your own family.
What kinds of families are acceptable? We accept many types of
families: single parent families, families with children of any age, childless
families and families with grown children.
What is the host family responsible for? The host family is responsible of
providing three meals a day, registering the student in school, a separate
bed and a quiet place to study. The STSF local LC will obtain the signed
school acceptance form prior to the student’s arrive to the country.
What happens if the student is ill or in an accident? Our students have
their own medical insurance. Each student should have an ID card and
claim forms before they arrive. STSF will help with the filing of claims.
What about spending money? The student’s natural parents agree
to send adequate spending money. This money should be enough for
clothing, social activities, trips, school expenses and telephone calls to
their home country. Ideally, students will already have a bank account
when they come over that they can access with an ATM card. Host Families
can also assist their students in setting up savings or teen account.
Are we supposed to show them America? Trips are organized and
available to the students through their Regional Directors or through
an STSF approved travel organization. Keep in mind that this is an
academic program with opportunities for travel for students who are
meeting academic standards. RDs also sponsor trips for students. More
information about these trips will be given throughout the year.
What is expected of the exchange student? Our students are here on
an academic program. This means, they must attend all of their classes,
participate in class and maintain at least a C or above in each class. The
student has an orientation that explains the rules they agree to abide by. These
include obeying all local, state and federal laws. They may be immediately
dismissed from the program and sent home for violation of these laws. They
are expected to follow host family rules concerning family responsibilities
such as chores. They must also obey curfews established by the host family.
What is the length of stay? Most of our students arrive in August for a
10 month academic stay. They must return to their home country 7 to 10
days after the last day of school. These are a few students who only come
for a semester. Some arrive in January and stay until December. How
do you match students to Host Families? We try to find students whose
hobbies and interest match the family members. We look for common
interest in the arts, sports and religious involvement. The host Family
may request a student from a country they have special interest in. We
try and match as much as possible to ensure a successful experience.
Are Host Families paid to host? No, but host families receive a $50
tax deduction (Charitable Contribution) per month for each month the
students live with you.
What are the rewards of hosting? Your family gains a new family
member. The relationship that evolves throughout your year as a host
parent will last a lifetime. The focus of this program is to have host
families and students learn from each other.
If you are interested in hosting, please contact Vicki Odom at 832-455-
7881 or vicki.stsfoundation@yahoo.com.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools
including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,
Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan,
ST. AIDAN’S SETS SUMMER VBS
Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about Vacation Bible School
again and the folks at St. Aidan’s have another great program planned.
Scheduled for the week of July 8 th -12 th , St. Aidan’s usually hosts about 80
children. This year’s theme is ROAR: Life is wild. God is Good. We usually
have Bahama Bucks on the last day. That is always a big treat for our
students. And, last year, we hosted Wild Things Zoofari. They brought
a wallaby, a toucan, a lemur and a hedgehog. Everyone really enjoyed
that.” Cost of VBS is $30. Scholarships are available for families in-need.
New for this year, we are adding Triumph Sports so our students will
have a full-day option. From 12-4 PM, Triumph will run a Bible-based
sports camp. Participants will play dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag,
basketball, soccer and more. Early registration for this afternoon session
is $105 before June 1 st . After June 1 st , cost goes up to $115. Registration
is already open at aidanschurch.org. For additional information, please
May 2019 | Hearthstone

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast.
Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals
including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia,
sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced
cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants,
okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil,
peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If
you don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting
here and there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular
new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight
sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long
to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better
yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to
deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to
promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release
organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent
light sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders!
Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding
spots.
