D I V I S I O N
Telscape TM is a photoluminescent Safety Way Guidance
System (SWGS), designed to give means of escape
guidance to occupants of buildings - particularly high
rise structures.
In an emergency evacuation, when electrical lighting
fails, Telscape will glow in the dark creating shafts of
light that delineates hazards and gives confidence to
escapees, guiding them to safety.
While emergency electrical lighting has its place, it
is expensive to install and maintain. It suffers from
reliability issues and is not particularly effective in smoke
filled conditions.
Telscape can overcome these issues and could save up
to 60% of escape route lighting costs.
Telscape installations
can be designed to
blend into your interior.
When electrical lighting fails
Telscape lights the ways.

PROPERTIES
USING
TELSCAPE
PRODUCTS
Photoluminescent materials have been around for many years but it is only in
the last couple of decades that their use has become widespread. The benefits
of “glow in the dark” substrates that emit light independent of direct electrical
0038/15
input are obvious, and these products have been seized upon by the safety sign
industry for their simplicity and effectiveness as a means of directing people
away from danger in times of power failure.
The use of photoluminescent signage has been mandated in the marine industry
since the early 1990’s but the events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks of 2001 led to a
wave of legislation regarding its use in land applications. Reports from fire crews
attending the World Trade Centre indicated that the use of photoluminescent
paint in the emergency stairwells contributed to the fast and effective evacuation
of thousands of people when other systems had failed. The message was clear;
photoluminescent products saved people’s lives.
Standards
The following standards are those most relevant to TELGLOW for use in
terrestrial applications.
BS ISO 16069:2017
Graphical Symbols – Safety Signs – Safety way
guidance systems (SWGS)
HARDINGTON
A safety way guidance system coordinates a complex range of safety products in
order to provide a continuous and conspicuous, unbroken route to safety that
allows people to evacuate occupied areas with minimum risk. ISO 16069 indicates
when and where it is appropriate to use photoluminescent materials as part of
an SWGS and defines minimum performance requirements for this application.
DIN 67510
Phosphorescent Pigments and Products
This German standard is the industry norm for the measurement and
assessment of photoluminescent products. DIN 67510 Part 1 defines a method
where samples are exposed for 5 minutes to a Xenon light source delivering
1000lux of light energy. The light is extinguished and the afterglow measured
in millicandella’s per m² (mcd/m²) at defined time intervals, until extinction is
achieved at a level of 0.32 mcd/m².
DIN 67510 Part 4 defines performance levels and is used by ISO16069 to
specify minimum performance requirements. When tested to DIN 67510-1
the photoluminescent must have a minimum luminance, after withdrawal of
the excitation light source, of 20 mcd/² at 10 minutes, 2.8 mcd/² at 60 minutes
and a minimum time to 0.32mcd/m² of 340 minutes. This information is usually
annotated as follows: 20/2.8 – 340 / DIN67510-1.
Telglow
The Marine industry was one of the first international industrial
group to embrace photoluminescent technology and it was
through our Maritime Progress company that we brought ‘inhouse’
the development and manufacture of Telglow.
It is now produced under the control of our chemical engineers
in the Telegan Pressed Products plant in Manningtree, Essex.
Telglow comes in three grades class B C and D the latter being
the highest grade providing greater luminosity.
In simple terms, the product absorbs light when available and
discharges light in the darkness. It presents no fire risk is selfextinguishing
and is non-toxic.
Wall Carriers
The Telscape range of PVC products can be supplied in the standard Telbex TM colours,
including black (See End Caps at bottom of page for standard colour examples).
Installation of the carrier is achieved by simply screwing through the extrusion into the
desired surface or it can be fixed to the wall with a wide range of adhesives. Carriers and
inserts can be cut and fitted but End caps may be necessary to give a complete finish.
Wall Carrier -
60x2000mm - 40mm Class C Insert
50x2000mm - 30mm Class D Insert
Featuring a central channel which can hold a corresponding
Telglow photoluminescent insert. This carrier has been
designed to comply with BS ISO 16069:2017 installation
requirements including luminous contrast.
N.B. All inserts are supplied in meter lengths.
Safety Rail -
90x2000mm - 50mm Class B Insert
80x2000mm - 40mm Class C Insert
70x2000mm - 30mm Class D Insert
The Safety Rail features a wider PVC border than the
standard carrier and has been designed to be positioned
higher up the wall. The increased size and alternative
placement allows Telglow TM Tactile Symbols to be added.
These self-adhesive photoluminescent symbols can assist
both the visually impaired and, in smoke conditions, the
regular sighted to safety.
Kick Plate - 170x2000mm
Kick Plate
without Telglow channel
Utilizing the inherent properties of Telbex TM , this “Kick Plate”
has been designed with the intention of protecting doors/
surfaces from general wear and tear. In addition it can also
be manufactured with a channel to accommodate one of the
three classes of Telglow TM photoluminescent insert, enabling
it to assist with evacuation route marking.
Enclosed Wall Carrier - Bespoke
It is our experience that some buildings have wall runs which
are punctuated with doors and service ducts / columns
and the installation is easier if the carrier is enclosed and
completed to a given size(s).
End Caps
End caps are also available for the carriers on request, they
offer a simple yet stylish option to give the desired carrier a
finished, professional look.
Telglow Pathway Matting
One of these products is walkway matting which incorporates photoluminescent “roadway”
marking. This matting can also illuminate the placement of machinery, high light the area
restricted to the operator and be part of a companies health and safety routine.
The flexible black PVC matting is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including dilute acids
at room temperature, although there may be some discolouration of the surface. Due to its
“rubbery” material, this PVC product is non-slip and reduces operator fatigue.
Matting is used in a wide variety of applications and responds very well but the user should
always consult the material data sheets. These highlight the qualities of electrical resistance,
anti-slip, resistance to chemicals, oils, oil with additive, aqueous solutions (organic and alkalis).
They also warn against contaminates such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones etc.
Stairs
Stairs represent a serious slip and trip hazard
during the evacuation of a building. The
Telscape system incorporates the use of Telglow
delineator strips in stair rails and stair nosing
and Telscape tactile symbols will help guide
vulnerable people escaping in smoke obscuring
‘blackout’ conditions. The photoluminescent
element in these products allow them to be
included as part of the BS ISO 16069: 2017 Safety
Way Guidance System (SWGS) recommendation.
Replacing or installing new stair nosing can be an expensive option. We
would advocate self adhesive rigid class C step delineation the size and
shape to be determined at the time of quotation.
In order to quote please indicate the surface and material of the
flooring (type and depth) and whether for interior or exterior use.
The wall carriers should be used to identify the stairs, start
slope and finish with appropriate signage and tactile
symbols (optional).
Safety rail and tactile
guidance helps all
people in smoke and
darkness.
Place one tactile symbol prior to the start of the
staircase on the transparent safety rail and then two
on the handrail for two steps, angled for ascent or
descent.
Compatible Signs
We would recommend at this time that for normal signage Telglow class B is adequate but for SWGS
Telglow class C signage is required. Our Signs for Safety Book highlights the vast numbers of signs
and products available in class B material but all of the products can be produced as specials in class
C and D.
