Agent Orange and Burn Pit Toxins
Merrimack Valley Innovations
Explored at Veterans’ Event
BYFIELD – If a Vietnam
War veteran, who was exposed
to the herbicide Agent Orange,
contracts prostate cancer,
the Veterans Administration
“presumes” it was caused by
exposure to the chemical and
provides compensation to the
former soldier.
If a Gulf War veteran, who
inhaled toxins from burn
pits in Iraq or Afghanistan,
contracts lung cancer or a
similar pulmonary disease,
he or she may not receive any
compensation.
The debate over the VA’s handling of
claims from former soldiers afflicted
with war-derived diseases is coming to
the North Shore. It will be discussed
at a meeting for veterans next week.
Sponsored by the North Shore
Veterans Collaborative, the meeting
will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
May 16 at the Byfield Community
Arts Center, 7 Green Street, Byfield.
It is part of a continuing series of bimonthly
meetings the North Shore
Veterans Collaborative sponsors to
help keep veterans informed.
Agent Orange was used extensively
between 1961 and 1971 by the U.S.
military as a defoliant chemical
during the Vietnam War. In addition
to its damaging environmental effects,
traces of dioxin (mainly TCDD, the
most toxic of its type) have caused
major health problems for up to 4
million people who were exposed.
The chemical is capable of damaging
genes, resulting in deformities among
the offspring of exposed victims. The
U.S. government has documented that
Agent Orange has caused higher cases
of leukemia, Hodgkin’s lymphoma
and various kinds of cancer in exposed
veterans.
Beginning in the early 1990s,
cancers and other diseases that
resulted from Agent Orange exposure
has been on a VA presumptive disease
list, which makes it easier for veterans
to get support from the agency.
The impact of burn pits on Gulf War
soldiers is a different story. It is being
studied extensively, but much less is
known about the long-term effects on
soldiers and civilians who were on the
ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Toxins in burn pit smoke may
affect the skin, eyes, respiratory
and cardiovascular systems,
gastrointestinal tract and internal
organs.
Burn pits were a common way to
get rid of waste at military sites in Iraq
and Afghanistan, burning chemicals,
paint, medical and human waste,
metal and aluminum cans, munitions
and other unexploded ordnance,
petroleum and lubricant products,
plastics, rubber, wood, and discarded
food.
In 2010, a large-scale burn pit
operation in Iraq and Afghanistan,
AMESBURY – Trucks delivering your
favorite beer or soda to stores today
have to keep their motor running while
the driver uses the lift gate to lower the
cargo to the street or sidewalk so he can
roll the six and 12 packs into the store.
While idling, trucks burn fuel, which
costs the truck owners money, and emit
pollutants, which irritate government
environmental agencies. In many states,
it is even illegal for trucks to idle, but
they do it anyway because until now
there was no other good option.
Now thanks to new technology by
Blackburn Energy and a state grant
from the Massachusetts Clean Energy
Center’s (CEC) InnovateMass, that is all
changing. Drivers for one of the largest
Budweiser beer distributors in the state
is adding Blackburn’s technology so its
drivers can pull up to the store, shut
off the engine and still have more than
enough power to raise and lower the lift
gate.
The gate is powered, not by the
engine, but by a bank of batteries that
were charged, at no additional cost,
by the kinetic energy generated by the
truck’s brakes as it drove to make its
The battery system uses no fuel and
does not pollute.
Last month, during the Earth
Week, the state CEC came to the
CI Works, which houses Blackburn
and more than 60 other innovative
companies, to announce it was giving
Blackburn $127,270 to support its
RelGen product, which it described
as “a regenerative braking system that
reduces the need to idle trucks during
deliveries, loading and unloading,
leading to a reduction in wasted fuel
and hazardous emissions.”
The money will help Blackburn
install its system on several trucks
owned by L. Knife & Sons of Kingston,
which has been delivering Anheuser-
Busch products to the South Shore
and Cape Cod since 1934. Blackburn
and Knife will then monitor the
energy and dollars saved, which will
help Blackburn convince other fleets
of trucks to install the system.
Andrew Amigo, Blackburn’s
founder and CEO, described L. Knife
& Sons, which has been in business
for more than 100 years, as “an early
adopter.” The state funds gave the beer
deliveries. Continued on page 3
distributor confidence that the
new technology works and
will save the company money,
Amigo said.
The Baker-Polito
administration announced
grants totaling $529,600 to
Blackburn and two other
“early-stage clean energy
technology companies.”
“As our Administration
works to significantly reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, the
contributions of Massachusetts’
many researchers and startups
to clean energy technology
are invaluable,” Gov. Charlie
Baker was quoted in a news
release. “The companies
receiving funding through
the InnovateMass program
are well-positioned to develop
groundbreaking technology
advancements that will lead
to positive economic impact
for the Commonwealth while
helping meet the challenges
posed by climate change.”
The other companies
receiving grants were Czar
Power, a Cambridge firm,
which will receive $250,000
to implement a high-efficiency
smart, solar canopy-powered
electric vehicle charger, and
Solablock, an Easthampton
company that will receive
$152,333 to fund the delivery
of a training and teaching
module on the installation of
solar masonry and associated
solar electrical systems to
the Minuteman Regional
Vocational High School in
Lexington.
tons of assorted waste for long
periods of time.
The VA’s official position on
burn pits is that they did not
cause long-term illnesses for
soldiers on the ground. But in
2014, the VA started a registry
of veterans who were exposed
to the toxins. Called the VA
Airborne Hazards and Open
Burn Pit Registry, it used a
questionnaire to gather data
about veterans and soldiers.
Veterans and active duty
soldiers may report exposure
to burn pits, oil-well fires and
fine sand particles.
“These issues are huge,”
said Karen Tyler, director
of Veterans’ Services for the
Eastern Essex Department
Merrimack Valley Innovations
seeks to provide essential
capital to early stage clean
energy companies at a point
in their development when
they are most vulnerable to
funding challenges,” Stephen
Pike, MassCEC CEO of the
three grants it announced.
“With this capital infusion,
these companies are positioned
to expand operations, tap
into new markets and grow
the state’s vibrant innovation
economy.”
Blackburn President Peter
Russo said MassCEC’s mission
is to improve the economy and
the environment. By making
the grant to Blackburn the
agency is doing both, he said.
State Sen. Diana DiZoglio,
D-Methuen, who attended
the announcement, said,
“Thanks in large part to
smart energy start-ups like
Blackburn Energy, the
Merrimack Valley is proving
one of the most innovative,
prosperous and economically
productive regions of the
Commonwealth.”
Pike said he came to
Amesbury to announce
the grants because next to
Greentown Labs in Somerville,
CI Works, a collective of
innovative companies, has the
second most number of green
start-up companies housed in
the old ARC Technologies mill
building.
Robert O’Brien, founder and
president of CI Works, said five
of its tenant companies it have
received MassCEC grants. He
welcomed the comparison
with Greentown Labs, saying
of Veterans’ Services. She is
working with the North Shore
Veterans Coalition to sponsor
the presentations. “There’s
a lot of misinformation out
there. This event will be super
informative. The more people
who come, the better.”
Scheduled are four
presenters, experts in the
Agent Orange registry and
Burn Pit research. They
include Dennis LeCroix
and Elizabeth Price, who
are with the VA. LeCroix is
an environmental registry
provider, and Price is an
expert on transitional care
management. Also presenting
will be Dr. Michelle Robertson
and Bruce Dodson, vice
president for the Vietnam
Veterans Assn.
Tyler promised the
presentations will be short,
“we have created a lot more
founder of CI Works, “is a
game changer.”
CI Works has also embarked
on a program to upgrade its
own mill building by adding
the energy efficiencies.
“We look forward to
continued association with
MassCEC as we advance our
old - toward being a net zero
building and set an example
for other businesses,” O’Brien
said. MassCEC recognizes that
CI Works “walks its talk.”
Working with Energy Source,
CI Works recently upgraded
its lighting source to LED
technology and programmable
thermostats, which reduced
its electrical usage by 109,486
kBTu. Thanks to incentives
from National Grid, the
upgrades will pay for itself in
a year.
CI Works also plans to add
solar panels to the roof of the
old building, insulate, replace
old windows with solar-power
producing ones and install an
electric vehicle charging station
for employees.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You
might be tempted to be more assertive
when dealing with a job-related matter.
But a carefully measured approach
works best at getting the cooperation
you’re looking for.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)
While others urge you to act now, you
instinctively recognize that a move at
this time is not in your best interests.
You should know when to do so by
week’s end.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A
busy schedule keeps you on the move
for much of the week. But things ease
up by the time the weekend arrives,
allowing you to reconnect with family
and friends.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel
dominates the week, and despite
some delays in getting to where you
want to go, the overall experience
should prove to be a positive one in
many ways.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your
Leonine self-confidence comes roaring
back after a brief period of doubt
and helps you get through a week of
demanding challenges and ultimately
emerge triumphant.
VIRGO (August 23 to September
22) Virgos who have made a major
commitment — personal or professional
— should be able to tap into a
renewed reservoir of self-confidence
to help them follow through.
a surprising source that could cause
you to change your mind about how
you had planned to deal with an ongoing
job-related problem.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November
21) A surprise move of support
from a colleague who has never been
part of your circle of admirers helps
influence others to take a new look at
what you’ve put on the table.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to
December 21) While a bold decision
to take an “I know what I’m doing”
approach impresses some colleagues,
it also raises the risk of causing resentment
among others.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) A misunderstanding
‘twixt you and a friend might not be
your fault at all, despite what he or
she suggests. Talk it out to see at what
point the confusion might have started.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February
18) Getting into a community
operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need
to help people. It also can lead to new
contacts that might one day help you
with a project.
Health & Wellness
BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD
Every once in a while someone
will say, “There must be a lot less
cavities today than there were years
ago because of improved home
care, fluoride, etc., right?” The
answer is, yes there are, but there
is still way too much decay. Poor
diet and home care are the two
most common culprits leading to
decay. When and what you eat and
drink is important. Improvement
in home care means changing what
is being done now, and requires
discipline.
Yesterday, I went into one of
my hygienist’s rooms to check her
patient, a 13-year-old boy, and
asked the hygienist how his home
care was, because his gums were
bright red. She said to me, “Jack,
why don’t you tell the doctor how
often you told me you brush your
teeth.” The boy answered, “About
once a week.” ONCE A WEEK?!?!
Add to the that he is in braces
too, which makes it even more
important to keep the teeth clean.
It’s important sometimes to step
back and review the basics, so here
they are. At a minimum, you should
brush with a fluoride toothpaste at
least twice a day for two minutes.
A good electric toothbrush is
preferable to a manual toothbrush.
Brighter Smiles...
BACK TO THE BASICS
When I say “good”, I mean one that
sits on charger, and not one that
takes AA batteries. There are two
major brands out there. I prefer the
one that starts with an “O”.
It amazes me how many people
don’t floss their teeth. I have heard
every excuse in the book; “My
fingers are too big”, “I don’t have
the time”, “It’s too hard”, “My dog
ate the floss”. Just like anything
else, it is always hard to start a new
ritual. There are so many different
kinds of floss and gadgets to help
floss that there is something out
there for everyone. And if you can’t
seem to make it work, use a water
pik.
Bacteria, which accumulates on
and between the teeth, forms that
white film called plaque. Plaque
contains billions of colonized
bacteria. The right kind of bacteria,
along with the wrong king of diet
and the wrong genetics can produce
cavities. Plaque that is not removed
with thorough daily brushing and
flossing can harden and turn into
calculus (tartar). These colonized
bacteria can then lead to tissue
inflammation (gingivitis), the
early stage of periodontal (gum)
disease.
Brushing your teeth helps get rid
of most of the plaque, except for
the stuff that accumulates between
the teeth. That is what floss is for.
I know it sounds gross but if you
want to know what your breath
smells like, floss a few teeth and
then smell the floss. That should
turn you into an avid flosser.
The routine should be, floss,
brush, rinse. The whole event
should be around five minutes.
Believe me, you have five minutes.
Flossing first allows the fluoride
from the toothpaste to contact a
cleaner tooth surface between the
teeth. I prefer a non-alcohol based
rinse as alcohol is drying and
creates a better environment for
bacteria to thrive.
One important thing about
flossing; proper flossing is not
popping the floss between the
teeth and shooting it right back
up. The proper way to floss is to
get the floss between the contact
of the teeth, slide the floss gently
under the gum tissue around one
tooth, “shoe-shine” the side of
the tooth, gently move the floss
over the papilla (the little piece
of gum between the teeth), “shoeshine“
the side of the other tooth
and then bring the floss up. At
your next dental visit, ask your
hygienist to evaluate your flossing
skills to make sure you are doing it
correctly.
You have the 5 minutes twice a
day.
What Have Studies Learned About Us?
We seniors must be fascinating to
researchers because it seems they’re
always studying us. Here are a few
things they’ve learned through Pew
Research Center studies:
* With all the drama nowadays
about “fake news,” and with our
age-enhanced ability to sniff out
lies, it would seem that we’d be
excellent at discerning what’s real
and what isn’t. Not so, according to
a study. Five thousand participants
of all ages were presented with five
Senior Scene
factual statements and five opinion
statements. Turns out the younger
age groups were much better at
identifying both the factual and
opinion news items than we were.
* Seniors are more likely to
be religious, which researchers
identified as meaning being part of
a religious group, attending weekly
services and praying daily. It’s not
just in here in America -- they got
the same results for most of the rest
of the world.
* When it comes to politics -- do
we even want to go there? -- both
the baby boomers (born 1946 to
1964) and the Silent Generation
(late 1920s to 1945) are more
conservative, with the Silents more
staunchly conservative than the
boomers.
* Although more of us are
becoming technologically savvy,
seniors are still 42 percent behind
other age groups in the percentage
of us who have cellphones or roam
the Internet. Half of us say we need
help setting up new devices, which is
where more training classes at senior
centers would come in handy.
* Those of us over the age of 50 are
divorcing at a rate that has doubled
during the past 30 years. For those
over age 65, the rate has tripled.
If you want to read through more
research results like these, go online
to Pew Research Center (www.
pewresearch.org) and search for
seniors or elderly.
