For Madeline, her love for the sciences falls in chemistry and biology; environmental biology in particular. She wants to try to find ways to create more sustainable products and more sustainable ways to live in our planet, she said. Corina’s strongest subjects fall in the grammar and reading sections. “I find it really easy to interpret what writers are saying,” she said. “It’s the opposite of Alayna, but that’s OK because we’re all individuals in our special ways.” Corina’s passion and career path she hopes to go down will be one that leads her to being a psychiatrist. Her passion comes from knowing that there are people out there who deal with mental health issues and sometimes they are unable to get the help they need, such as help from a psychiatrist. She added that there are people close to her who have dealt with those experiences. “Because of what I’ve seen with [people close to me], I want to be able to help people and make mental health help more accessible for people.” And their mom, Holly, is excited for what doors this may open for her daughters. While she was in the same boat as her daughters thinking high scores were possible, it was not something she expected. “It opens a lot of opportunities with schools as far as getting in and making them affordable,” she said. “It’s really just the beginning.” Outside of “school work,” the triplets are involved in numerous activities and clubs, some together and some on their own. Having the different cultures in their household has helped shape the triplets, Alayna said. “We’re seeing that some kids have different strengths and different talents and being able to connect with people with different backgrounds [is special],” she said. All of the girls’ dreams are just on the horizon as all they have left to complete is senior year at West. Paul McDermott, the girls’ father said he and his wife weren’t the type to always provide answers for their daughters. “We were the kind of parents that were there to support them and wanted them to discover answers on their own,” Paul said. “We gave them guidance, but we wanted them to be able to do some of that on their own as people.” Local teen raising money for camp SEAN HASTINGS, Editor Local teen Jacob Cope is one of the lucky ones. Which is why he holds the Royal Family Kids Camp so close to his heart, because that camp, even if it is just for one week, gives foster kids aged 7-11 a real reason to smile. The camp is entirely funded by donations and there have been years where there has not been enough funding to allow a number of kids into the camp, although there was space for them. So for the second year in a row, Cope is hosting a fundraising event Friday, May 10 from 7-10 p.m. at the Francis Field Building, 801 East Francis Road, New Lenox to raise money to allow more kids to attend the camp. The event has a number of vendors, who have paid a $50 table fee, with raffle baskets are available. People can also make donations straight to the cause. A food truck, “Life’s a Slice” will be there as well. The Royal Family Kids Camp is a week-long camp (July 7-12) for foster children and the parents of the children do not have to pay anything out of pocket, Cope said. Cope attended the camp as a foster child for five years and has now been working as a counselor for three. “It’s really cool and nice to [be apart of the organization],” Cope said. “When these kids come, they’re really closed off and don’t really want to talk to anyone, but by the end of the week, they’re a completely Although last year’s camp raised a lot of money, Jacob Cope hopes to raise even more this year to send more foster children to the Royal Family Kids Camp. Photo Submitted different kid that’s happy and joyful and glad to finally have a nice week to themself and actually be a kid for once.” One of the most exciting things that happens during the camp is a birthday celebration where everyone’s birthday is celebrated. “A lot of the kids in the foster care center system never even celebrated a birthday,” Cope’s, mother Laura Oresky said. “They get cupcakes and get treated like Kings and Queens, they get gifts, and they get treated as royalty throughout the whole week.” Oresky and Cope both said this camp is a chance to give the foster children some of their only photographs of their childhood. Each child goes home with a photo album and Cope still has his. The children learn how to swim, ride a bike, play baseball, archery; basically anything that people take for granted every single day of their life. This camp is also a chance for some brothers and sisters to be reunited if they live in different foster homes. Sometimes the camp can be the only time they see each other. And the children can return the following years as well. One child stands out in Cope’s mind from previous camps. “There was this kid when he was first able to when he was 7 years old and by the time he was aging out, it was crazy to see [him change],” Cope said. “He was really hyper, wasn’t really listening to anyone at the camp, but by the end of the couple years he came, he was a completely different kid. He respected people, was listening, still a little hyper, but better than what was. “ Cope added that a lot of the children are that way, but seeing the change is really nice. Which is why it is so important to him that they can raise enough money to get every child who wants to be in the camp, actually in it. His goal to have 55 children attend this year’s camp and it costs $700 per kid to attend. Last year the camp had to turn away 16 kids and Cope was really sad about that, Oresky said. This is Cope’s own fundraising effort for the camp. “I feel like every kid in the foster care system should get to experience something like this,” Cope said. “We’ve just been doing these fundraisers to make sure we meet that fundraising goal so we can send all the campers to camp.”
