Why I am a prison chaplain
I
By Gerlinde Symons
I remember very clearly the first
time I went to a prison for Sunday
Mass. I had been invited to attend
by the chaplain of HMP Brixton
along with several other co-workers
of Mother Teresa.
I had no idea what to expect, and
was so scared that I didn’t even talk
with any of the prisoners there that
morning. All I can say is that
something touched me. I
experienced the Mass as a real
celebration, the men were joyful
when they sang, and I began to
appreciate my freedom for the first
time.
I decided to become a chaplaincy
volunteer, and 18 months later,
having felt a strong calling to prison
ministry, began working there as a
lay chaplain.
I’ve been a lay chaplain now for
10 years – I’m still working at
Brixton but my main prison is a
Category C prison near Woking in
Surrey called HMP Coldingley. It has
around 500 male prisoners, of which
100 are registered Catholic.
My main responsibility is for the
pastoral care of the RC prisoners
and staff at Coldingley. The men
often struggle with being away from
their families, especially if a loved
one is taken ill or has to go into
hospital.
In those cases, I can offer support
and comfort, pray with them and be
a link to their families, as making
calls from prison can often be
difficult and expensive. I’m there to
remind them that they are not alone
in their suffering.
The men can also feel lonely and
depressed and may experience
feelings of guilt and shame, and I’m
there to remind them that they are
so precious in God’s eyes.
I’m also responsible for the
liturgical life at Coldingley. We have
a rota of three priests that come
from St Joseph’s parish in Guildford
to celebrate Mass in our beautiful
chapel every Saturday morning.
We have a rosary group before
Mass, and the sacrament of
reconciliation afterwards, as well as
coffee and biscuits and a chance to
socialise.
We are blessed with an amazing
team of dedicated volunteers, who
prepare the altar for mass, pray
with the men, offer encouragement
and kindness and are real witnesses
of faith in action: “I was in prison
you came to visit me” (Matt. 25:36).
During the week we have a prayer
group, and two other groups,
supported by volunteers, that
encourage the men to grow in their
faith.
feel so blessed to have been
called to this ministry. It’s such a
huge privilege to serve both
prisoners and staff there, and
knowing that I can make a
difference gives me a great sense
that I’m exactly where I’m meant to
be.
To accompany the men on their
faith journey and watch them
deepen their love of God and their
neighbour is my greatest joy.
My experience of Mass in prison is
so special. There’s a genuine feeling
of warmth, reverence and
fellowship that would be wonderful
for them to experience once they
leave prison and go to their local
parishes. My wish would be that exoffenders
would be welcomed in all
parishes as “brothers in Christ”.
