Delia School Enhancement Society
reaches $1.2 million goal in eight months
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
In eight short months the Delia
School Enhancement Society (DSES)
has successfully reached their fundraising
goal of $1.2 million.
Their efforts are to be used to help
with federal and provincial funding
towards a new Kindergarten to Grade
12 School in the village.
A variety of fun and unique fundraising
opportunities were pursued
under the Make Your Mark Campaign
especially the Boots and Bowties Gala
which raised $68,000 and the ‘Ag for Ed’
charity steer named Sir Loin.
“The Gala was a huge success at
$9,000. It was a great night for everyone
who attended, with amazing food from
Bev and Don Hall and incredible entertainment
from Elton Lammie and his
band, and the Suit Jacket Society. We
raised over $68,000 in a single night – a
crazy, awesome number. That number
was only possible because of our generous
donors, community support and
Delia School students, faculty and community members gathered in the Delia School Gymnasium on Thurs, May 2. Confetti and balloons were
released in celebration of the $1.2 million raised by the Make Your Mark campaign organized by the Delia School Enhancement Society (DSES). The
funding will be used towards the new Delia School.
ECA Review/T.Huxley
incredibly dedicated volunteers.
We are so grateful and lucky to
have the community we do,” said
Robyn Thompson-Lake, DSES
Social Media Lead.
On Thurs. May 2, students,
teachers, parents, and DSES
board members gathered in the
school gymnasium to celebrate
the incredible milestone, solidifying
their dream by turning it
into reality.
“The Make Your Mark campaign
was a huge success
– success only possible because of
the incredible generosity shown
by individuals, families, businesses,
and communities. We
raised over $1.2 million in under
eight months – an amazing
number that shows how important
this project is to so many
people. DSES is so excited to
the many, many people who contributed,”
said Amber Marshall,
DSES President.
Now that the society has
reached their fundraising target
for the Make Your Mark campaign,
the group is shifting focus
towards raising funds to ensure
the community spaces and new
school facility are equipped and
ready to welcome the community
in 2020.
Some of the needs that have
been identified include bleachers
and infrastructure for the fieldhouse,
greenspaces and
community garden areas, community
library supplies and
enhancements, and art programming
and supplies.
Court rules provinces and
feds must work together
Brenda Schimke
ECA Review
With a split decision by
Saskatchewan’s Court of Appeal
ruling the federal government’s
carbon pricing scheme was within its
constitutional powers, the only true
winners are lawyers. They are and
will continue to rake in multi-millions
of taxpayer dollars as Ontario, New
Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba and
British Columbia fight the federal government,
or one another, over federal/
provincial jurisdiction.
Lawsuits between domestic governments
are simply propaganda tools
used by competing ideologies to affirm
a sense of injustice and anger between
tribes. Defeats in the court give the
losing tribe more ammunition to bad
mouth our judiciary, an important
democratic pillar, and to promote more
anger and resentment amongst
Canadians. When feelings rule, facts
and reason disappear.
When right-wing parties were conservative
(market economy with
government oversight to protect consumers
and vulnerable populations)
and before they became neo-liberal
(low taxes, no regulations, small government),
conservative politicians
believed in the need for carbon emission
reductions. In fact, both the
carbon tax and the cap-and-trade
system were Conservative brain
child’s—both put a price on pollution
to change behavior and encourage
investment in alternate energy sources
using market forces.
Today, right-wing, neo-liberal parties
change their spin on climate
change depending on the audience.
They know the environment doesn’t
win elections, yet polls consistently
find the majority of Canadians are concerned
about climate change. That’s
why Prime Minister-hopeful Andrew
Scheer will float his left-wing carbon
reduction plan of subsidies and incentives
for individuals, and regulations
and fines on industry for the election
season. Once elected his plan will
become neo-liberal-friendly by simply
reducing targets, gutting oversight
agencies and allowing industry to
self-monitor.
EDITORIAL
MAIL BAG
OPINION
The majority of Justices based their
decision on two points of law. First, the
carbon tax was not a tax because it did
not raise revenue for the federal government.
Under the federal scheme,
100 per cent of the carbon tax revenue
is returned back to individuals and
businesses in the provinces where they
were collected. Rather than a tax, it is
a regulatory fee on emissions for the
purpose of changing behaviour.
The second finding was that climate
change is an area of shared jurisdiction
between Ottawa and the provinces
and they must work together. The
majority of Justices found that the federal
plan allows for significant
provincial action on carbon emissions
and respects Canada’s Constitution. Of
course, this ruling only makes sense to
those who are not climate deniers and
those who believe pollution and CO2
can cross politicial borders.
The timing is awful, but eventually
the TransMountain pipeline will
receive the go ahead. That is if the
majority of Justices in our provincial
and federal Supreme Courts continue
to rule that the federal government has
constitutional powers over crossborder
issues, including pipelines and
carbon emissions.
Today there are Premiers such as
Doug Ford of Ontario, Mike Harcourt
of B.C. and now Jason Kenney who
routinely launch or trigger lawsuits
instead of governing. Unfortunately
the results are dismal including
unnecessary delays on important economic
projects (courts move very
slowly) and multi-millions of tax dollars
wasted on lawyer fees. But the
most dangerous precedence is these
new age politicians are capitulating
their constitutional governance
powers to an unelected judiciary.
Interestingly, when the vast majority
of political leaders were lawyers, they
seldom ceded their elected power to the
judiciary branch of government.
Effective leadership is more than
riling up an angry crowd and getting
them out to vote. The hard work of
leadership in a democracy is disagreement,
negotiation, collaboration,
deliberation, compromise, respect and
making decisions that benefit more
than just one tribe.
Accept the herd mentality
Dear Editor,
Re: “Fact or opinion”; by Brenda
Schimke; 4/18/19.
Indeed, independent thinking is discouraged.
We’re “encouraged” to
behave like sheep. We’re to accept the
opinions of others without bothering to
check the facts.
Why? Because most folks are afraid
to express a “different” point of view
for fear of possibly losing their jobs,
their businesses, or their friends/
associates.
The fear of being ostracized also
plays a very big part in the minds of
many people, especially in rural communities
where everyone knows
everyone.
Expressing a “different” point of
view may be considered heresy. We’re
“encouraged” to conform, to be the
same like everyone else. We’re encouraged
to think alike, to talk alike, and to
even vote alike.
“Don’t be different”! Follow the
crowd; accept the herd mentality.
Carbon tax - split decision
by Herman Schwenk
The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal
came down with a decision on Fri. May
3 on Saskatchewan’s challenge to the
Federal Government imposing a
carbon tax on the residents of
Saskatchewan.
In a split three to two decision, they
ruled in favour of the Federal
government.
From what I have learned, the decision
was more about whether the
government had the constitutional
right to impose the tax on a province
rather than if there was merit in the
reason for the tax in the first place.
The written decision by the two dissenting
judges was more detailed than
was the decision of the other three
judges.
The dissenting decision will provide
justification for appeal, so this is not a
final decision on the issue by a long
ways.
As Premier Scott Moe said, the decision
will be appealed to the Supreme
Court.
The province of Ontario has also
taken the Federal Government to
court on the matter. It will be interesting
to see what the decision of that
court will be.
This old dinosaur is not very good at
finding info on Google.
I was told that the mean temperature
on Mars parallels the
temperature on the Earth exactly.
I was digging around on Google to
find a confirmation of this and while I
did not find a clear yes or no, what I did
find pretty much confirms that it does.
Australian physical chemist, Dr.
Peter Carson from the University of
Adelaide showed that careful comparison
of the different concentrations of
atmospheric carbon dioxide (C02) on
Earth, Venus and Mars determines
that the supposed greenhouse gas
effect has no relation to the amount of
atmospheric C02.
The atmosphere on Venus and Mars
is about 95 per cent C02 but on Mars
the atmosphere is very thin.
Dr. Carson sets out and links in a
detailed analysis, a compelling debunk
of the claims that adding more C02 into
the atmosphere will alter the temperature
of a planet’s surface.
In effect, Carson shows that the
theory of anthropogenic global
warming is false.
I also did some research on Dr. Tim
Ball.
He is a renowned environmental
consultant and former professor of climatology
at the University of
Winnipeg.
Dr. Ball has written extensively on
the subject of climate change.
He says almost everything that we
hear on radio and television is propaganda
and fake news.
In February of 2019 he did an update
on an earlier effort to counter the propaganda
war that is going on to
promote the falsehoods about the environment
and climate.
I personally have met and spoken
with Dr. Ball twice and I have heard
him interviewed on radio numerous
times.
I have not seen him interviewed on
TV.
The mainstream media are going
along with the deception being promoted
by the United Nations,
environmentalists, all the left wing
politicians and you name it, so they are
not about to interview someone like
Dr. Ball.
I fail to understand why the conservative
politicians are going along with
this climate change deception.
These court cases would be an excellent
opportunity to bring in the real
climate experts and prove to everyone
that climate change is and always has
been natural.
So there would be no need to cut
back on carbon emissions.
I think a court case would be an
excellent way for conservatives to set
themselves apart from the rest of this
pack.
There would be key climate information
that would become public from
this process and that could not be
ignored by the press any more than
the information that came to light
from the SNC-Lavalin situation.
It would not matter what the decision
of the court was, it is the
testimony of the climate experts
becoming public in a court case that
would wake everyone up to the deception
that has been going on for
decades.
The incentive program
would award current residents
Some of the proposed incentives
highlighted were, if a
Submitted
On May 1, 2019 Canada’s
last wooden tipple has a new
lease on life.
Instead of thousands of
tons of coal going through
the tipple each season, thousands
of visitors from the
world over can see, feel and
engage with authentic
history.
The Atlas Coal Mine
National Historic Site celebrated
a century of Atlas
Mines and the completion of
their five-year, $1 million
conservation project.
In 2012, a multi-year,
multi-phase plan was
devised to preserve the
tipple that was built in 1937.
Without timely attention
towards stabilization, this
unique structure would
have closed to visitors and
may have been lost forever.
“Having the last standing
wooden Tipple in Canada
preserved for future generations
is a wonderful
achievement for the
Drumheller Valley, said Dr.
Sarah Newstead, Executive
Director of the Atlas Coal
Mine National Historic Site.
“The Atlas Coal Mine is
proud to keep the Valley’s
coal mining heritage alive,
telling the miners stories to
thousands of visitors every
year.”
A tipple sorted, stored and
loaded coal, very much like
a grain elevator.
FORESTBURG COUNCIL
relocates to Forestburg, the
person who invited them here
would receive a $500 property
tax or utility credit.
If a family of two or more
builds a new home, the incentive
would be $1,000 property
tax or utility credit.
If a new business opens
which employs two or more
employees, a $1,000 property
tax or utility credit would be
given.
A new business being built
and becoming operational,
would result in a $2,000 property
tax or utility credit for the
person who issued the invitation
to relocate.
If an established business
expands or builds, a tax credit
is negotiated depending on the
value of the build and the
number of additional staff
hired.
The policy is also proposing
that a current resident or business
is eligible to receive the
Community Growth Incentive
for each separate family and/
or business which relocates to
Forestburg.
The community growth
must also occur within six
months of invitation to visit
and/or relocate to Forestburg.
Council recommended that
administration make additional
changes to the policy
and present the amended
policy at a future Council
meeting.
Patio opening
Council approved the request
from Manyhorses Saloon to
close the laneway adjacent to
their property located at 5004-50
Avenue from May 1 to Sept. 30 to
allow the business to utilize this
space as an outdoor patio.
A condition to temporarily
fence the area was put in place
to ensure that there is a physical
barrier between patrons
and the general public.
After being sorted the different sizes
of coal were stored in massive storage
bins ready to be delivered or loaded
onto the waiting trains.
Drumheller coal kept millions of
Canadians warm during the first half
of the 20th century.
At one time there were hundreds of
tipples across Canada.
Conservation efforts to Canada’s last
wooden tipple included vital structural
repairs, replacement of
compressed timbers, replacement of
the roof, and creating a public exhibit
space.
This project was completed thanks
to fundraising, private donations and
project grants as this national historic
site receives no operational funds from
any level of government.
to council that the
Community Standards
The purpose of this bylaw
Currently residents must
submit their complaints in
writing for unsightly properties,
noise levels, and
more, before administration
can take action.
The matter was
tabled until a
Alix Traffic Bylaw review completed
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
The final three parts of the village
of Alix Traffic Bylaw was read and
discussed, completing the mulimeeting
overview of the bylaw.
Alix Council met on Wed. May 1
for their regular meeting, bringing
forward a few last items to the table.
Although the review is over, residents
have time to converse with
council on their thoughts towards the
various changes brought forward to
update this particular bylaw.
The bylaw passed first and second
reading at the meeting and will be
brought back at a future date for
third reading.
Changes include things like the
school zone being changed to a dusk
until dawn playground zone to limit
confusion as to
times where
traffic is allowed
to speed up and
slow down near
the school and
other designated
areas.
Chief
Administrative
Officer (CAO)
Michelle White
mentioned she
will be looking
farther into this
with the scope set
on all designated
areas within the
village limits to
see where signs
would be appropriate
and what
limits are acceptable
to ‘have some
uniformity there.’
Penalties have been tentatively
changed to reflect more intense
prices in hopes of limiting infractions
within the village.
Any person in contravention to the
rules can be fined between $50 and
$1,000 depending on the type of
offense.
Council felt that the section of
‘Parking a vehicle carrying dangerous
goods on any non-designated
highway’ was too low at only $100 for
the first offence.
They agreed to bump it up to $250
for the first offense, $500 for the
second, and $1,000 for the third in the
name of public safety.
Lacombe County peace officers
are the village’s designated officers
with the ability to fine people with
tickets or warnings under the village’s
bylaw.
Library board report
Coun. Barb Gilliat shared minutes
from the recent Alix Public Library
meeting held in the middle of April.
Mayor Rob Fehr and Coun. Gilliat
attended.
The mayor asked to speak to a concern
that had been raised by a number
of people regarding how the library
services are being delivered.
He suggested that if no evaluations
are being done that they should be
considered by the board.
Dwight Nagel, vice-chair, was
appreciative of Mayor Fehr’s request
but felt the village should have
brought the complaints to the board.
Jean McDermand also added that
‘We don’t always know what is going
on in the library and don’t see how
patrons are behaving.’
a jug band at the Coronation Evangelical Free Church fundraiser on Sat. May 4 at the Drop In Centre in Coronation
entertained with toe-tapping music involving many from the audience, including, in front, Chris Goodbrand and
Curtis Perry, Lois Grout on the drum and in the background, Pastor Clayton Grice, Dan Kinakin, Sonja Smith and
Rod Klassen. The band also included alexis Perry playing spoons and yvonne Thulien with the cow bell.
Easter treats, after-school fun
by Zac Rochon
Students and staff at the
Hughenden Public School
(HPS) combined the annual
Cake Walk for elementary
students with after school
activities for students on
April 18 to enjoy before the
spring break.
Each year just before
Easter, HPS staff and parents
join forces to organize
the popular Cake Walk, in
which elementary students
get to spend the last part of
their day competing in
activities in the gym for
their choice of sweet and
pretty prizes.
Grade 7 students Dillan
Dambrowsky and William
Stringer were supervising
and helping to keep things
running smoothly during
the event.
“The kids had a lot of fun
and were very happy after
they got their cake,” said
Dambrowsky.
“I feel the elementary
loved it and the teachers
really appreciated all the
work we put into it,” said
Stringer.
Grade 10 students
Anna-Mae Rustad, Chloe
Sayer, Reagan Lomheim,
and Erin Johnson did
double duty, baking and decorating
layer cakes for their
Foods class, and donating
them as prizes for the elementary
Cake Walk.
To add to the spring fun
this year, the Student’s
Union decided to host a student
night after school the
same afternoon.
Students of all ages were
invited to play school-wide
hide and seek and/or participate
in a recreational floor
hockey tournament.
Junior High Foods classes
contributed to this part of
the day as well, by baking
the hashbrown casserole
that was served for supper.
by Maja Congdon
The Biology 20 students of
Hughenden Public School
enjoyed a visit on Thurs.
April 4 by Tammy Sather
and Brian Cooper, members
of the local fire and rescue
team.
They helped the Grade 11
students to grow their
knowledge and skills
regarding a healthy circulatory
system.
The students learned how
to take blood pressure and
blood glucose, along with
how to test for carbon monoxide
in their bodies.
While testing for carbon
monoxide, it was discovered
that student Jared Johnson
had a small amount of
carbon monoxide in his
body. He was sent to the hospital
to get it looked at.
The family later found out
they had a carbon monoxide
leak in their home furnace.
Classmates were very
concerned for Jared and
impressed with the accidental
intervention by fire
and rescue.
Regarding the classroom
visit, Naomi Johnson
remembers that “The diabetes
Had a story for anyone who would listen
Ron was born on May 11, 1945 to Bill
and Avis Cooke in Lloydminster, Sk.
He went to school until Grade 11.
He played school basketball and volleyball
and as a teenager he played
baseball, as the catcher.
worked road construction
in the
summer.
In the fall he
worked for Rayson
and James Trucking
of Paradise Valley,
Alta.
Ron took his
training in
Hughenden, Alta. to Cooke
become an agent for
the Alberta Wheat Pool.
Ron (20) and Duffy (17) who was the
love of his life, were married on Aug.
Richard Wade
1933 ~ 2019
Richard was born on Jan. 12, 1933 in
Bassano, Alta. to Alice and Ted Wade.
They resided on the family farm and
he attended school in Gem, Alta.
In 1936, his brother Jim was born
and in 1939 their dad joined the military
and went overseas.
Richard moved to
Vancouver with his mom and
brother Jim to be closer to
family. While in Vancouver
Richard’s sales ability emerged
and he was #1 paperboy for the
Vancouver Sun.
In 1946 his mother married
Dale Laughlin and they moved
to Youngstown, Alta. where
Richard attended school.
Richard’s brother John was Wade
born in 1947.
Richard worked with Dale at
the Esso Service Station and at their
Massey Ferguson dealership
(Laughlin and Wade).
In 1960 Richard married Sandra
Taylor from Rivers, Man. Together,
they had three daughters: Tracey, Jodi
and Tara.
Richard opened the Massey
Ferguson dealership in Hanna in 1969
and in 1971 the family moved to
Hanna.
Richard sold the dealership in 1977,
however, continued
to sell for a few
years.
He then got his
real estate license
and he has never
stopped doing what
he loved – selling.
Richard was still
going to his office
at Big Sky Reality a
month ago.
Richard was predeceased
by his
mother Alice
Laughlin and father Ted Wade; stepfather
Dale Laughlin, brother Jim,
Sandra’s parents, Margaret and Frank
Taylor and brother-in-law Larnold
Richard is survived by his wife
Sandra of 59 years; daughters: Tracey
TYLER LAWRASON
ADMINISTRATOR
M.D. OF PROVOST NO. 52
OBITUARY
Committed to his spiritual mission
Ted Lawrence Andrew
January 24, 1991 –
April 25, 2019
Ted Andrew, son of Tim
and Lois Andrew of
Youngstown, Alta. passed
away in the arms of his parents
at the Oyen Hospital the
morning of April 25, 2019.
Brothers Cole, Clay,
Austin and sister-in-law
Allison, have his example to
guide them.
Grandparents Jim and
Dorothy Andrew, and
Gordon and Barb Thielen
hold his memory close to
their hearts.
Grandma Katie Thielen
awaited him in heaven.
Ted’s early life revolved
around attending school in
Youngstown from ECS to
Grade 10; then South
Central High in Oyen for
Grades 11 and 12.
He participated in School
Reach and school curling.
When watching curling,
he would phone Grandpa T
so they could critique the
shots and predict the outcome
of games.
4-H was an integral part
of his life.
He won Champion
Carcass Steer, was a camp
counsellor many times, and
won a trip to Ottawa
through 4-H Selections.
One of Ted’s life highlights
was placing second at
the 2009 4-H Provincial
Speak-offs.
This April he returned to
Provincial’s to be one of the
impromptu judges.
Ted’s love of communicating
was evident from an
early age.
His interest in broadcasting
was initiated at Q91
Drumheller with a week
long internship. He became
affectionately known as
“Bedhead Ted.”
Ted received his diploma
in Broadcast Journalism
from Lethbridge College.
His first paying job was as
a news reporter/newscaster
for a VISTA radio station in
Prince George, B.C. from
2011 to 2015.
It was there where Ted
found a Young Adult group
which ignited his desire to
examine, proclaim and
serve his increasing faith.
This led Ted to apply to
NET Ministries in 2015.
NET’s mission is to
encourage young people to
love Jesus and embrace the
life of the Church.
In August 2015 Ted flew to
Ireland and served there for
the past four years.
During the first two
years, he was on teams that
led workshops and retreats.
He then moved into
administration where he
served as the Partnership
Coordinator,
helping team members
raise funds to
join the mission.
December 8, 2017
Ted was struck
down with Ewing
Sarcoma.
The next six
months were spent
in Beaumont
Andrew
Hospital, Dublin
receiving
treatments.
The nurses soon became
his away from home family.
They spent many hours
discussing The Crown,
Downton Abbey and the
Royal Family.
When family and friends
visited there was lots of card
playing and discussion.
The generosity of the
people of Ireland and
Canada enabled Lois to live
close by. (Google Joe Duffy –
Ted from Canada)
Ted and Lois returned to
Canada June 13, 2018.
The cancer returned July
4 and thus began the
Canadian portion of his
treatments.
The nurses and doctors at
the Tom Baker Centre
became his new second
family.
After exhausting all treatment
alternatives for this
rare cancer, Ted spent his
last days at the Youngstown
ranch with the company of
those he loved, either in
person or through the
advantages of social media.
Ted continued to enjoy
Gramma Dorothy’s cooking,
especially the butterhorns,
and the frequent visits and
crib games with Grandpa
Jim.
On April 15, 2019 Ted was
honoured to be part of the
Chrism Mass at St. Mary’s
Cathedral, Calgary.
At the mass he asked
Bishop McGratten to Bless
the Oil of the Sick.
Priests will use this oil to
anoint the sick during the
coming year.
Ted found peace having
received this anointment
several times during his
illness.
Ted remained dedicated to
fulfilling his NET duties
until his passing.
Ted’s faith will live on in
those who knew him. He
was committed to his spiritual
mission.
Though he died
early, he is at rest.
As NET says,
“Do Something
Amazing”.
Prayer Vigil
Service was held
Mon. April 29 and
Mass of Christian
Burial was held
Tues. April 30 at
the Sacred Heart
Roman Catholic Church in
Oyen, Alta.
Officiating Clergy were
Fr. Newton Rodrigues and
Fr. Cristino Bouvette.
Michelle Viste was the
organist and John
Ruschkowski was the guitarist.
Special music was
provided by the Net
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK
MAY 5 – 11, 2019
Last year the County sent out a farm planning
form with your tax notices – the yellow
form - to be used in the event of rural
emergencies and disasters. While we did
get a large number returned, there is still
a large number who didn’t. This is for
your benefit and safety and ALL rural residents
are encouraged to complete it (it’s
voluntary!) and return to the County for
use in emergencies only. It will even let
you think about your farm site emergency
plans! The form can be found on the
County website www.countypaintearth.ca/
emergency-management
The County also continues to promote a
public awareness campaign entitled “Preparedness
Begins at Home” and is making
available the following resources:
1) Emergency Preparedness Guide
2) 72 Hour Emergency Kit Checklist
3) Family Emergency Planning –
5 Step Guide
These documents are available for no
charge downloaded from our website:
www.countypaintearth.ca and printed
at home. Families are also encouraged
to check out www.getprepared.gc.ca for
more information on family preparedness
planning.
The County of Paintearth is providing
these resources in cooperation with
Public Safety Canada and the Alberta
Emergency Management Agency. Don’t
wait until an emergency hits - please take
time with your family to prepare now!
Hanna school fire
fighting program?
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
J.C. Charyk Hanna School
vice-principal Kelly Lewis
and Hanna Fire Chief David
Mohl presented information
on the possible Fire Fighting
Program that would be
offered to students this fall.
Initial efforts are being
made to develop a program
which would be two years in
length, starting in Grade 11.
Participating students will
take a full slate of courses
focused primarily on preparing
them to become
members of local volunteer
fire departments, enter into
a career as a firefighter, or to
meet personal interests.
The academic qualifications
upon completing the
required courses would not
hamper
their
entrance into other careers,
trades or post secondary
education.
Students are still required
to meet the graduation
requirements as set out by
the Government of Alberta
and Prairie Land Regional
Division #25.
Successful students will
also be eligible to receive
nationally recognized
accreditation for fire
fighting.
The fire fighting course
itself will be based on the
NFPA 1001 (National Fire
Protection Association) standards
as presented in
certified course materials.
The Hanna Fire
Department will provide certified
instructors for the
course as well as the facility
for various functions such as
the training and practices.
Castle
building
for
Food
Bank
by K. Smawley
Every year
Theresetta School
focuses on acts of
service during the
season of Lent.
On April 17, the
students and staff
ended their Lent
season with
another whole
school event,
castle building.
The students
spent a couple
weeks beforehand
bringing in food
bank items and
stockpiling them
in their teams
designated
location.
On Wed. April
24, the teams all
brought their
entire collection
of food to the gym
to build the most
creative castles
that they could
design.
All the teams
put in a great
showing and
many creative
visions were
brought to life.
The activity
made for many
laughs but, more
importantly, the
students were
able to donate a
multitude of
items to the
Castor Food
Bank.
Theresetta
Student Council
designated April
25 as 80’s Day,
their May Spirit
Day choice. The
students and
staff had fun
dressing up in
their best 80’s
themed gear.
For Lent, Theresetta school teams stockpiled food bank items and
were challenged on april 24 to create castles with their food bank
donations. From the left, anthony Heidecker, Murry Bicknell, Nicolas
12 M ay 9'19 Ha NNa /CORONa TION/STETTLER, a B. ECa REVIEW
Inclusivity Project takes PLRD
Morrin students to Germany
Submitted
Germany is a country
rich in culture and history.
It is an amazing
place to visit and for
three students from
Morrin it was a trip of a
lifetime.
For two weeks,
Madeline Cuncannon,
Taylor Davidson,
Thomas Chapin and
PLRD Curriculum
Coordinator Ellen
Vanderkolk were
immersed in German
culture as they attended
school and travelled the
country.
“We experienced every
possible means of public
transportation available—bus,
taxi, tram,
train and high-speed
trains,” laughs
Vanderkolk.
The group stayed in
Idstein, 30 minutes
north of
Frankfurt. The
first week they
visited Cologne,
Frankfurt,
Idstein, Mainz
and Limburg.
They also took the
ICE (Intercontinental
Ex-press) high
speed train to
Berlin and
Munich/Dachau.
“It’s amazing to
have the opportunity
to see history
come alive, visiting
historic
places like the
Brandenburg
Gate in Berlin,
the remains of the
Berlin Wall, the
Holocaust
Memorial Site in
Berlin and the
Dachau
Concentration
Camp,” said
Vanderkolk.
The group also
saw Renaissance
castles, gothic
cathedrals, the
Gutenberg
Museum, Roman
ruins and an
archaeological
dig site.
While the travelling
part of the
trip was an
amazing opportunity,
being
immersed in
classes at
Pestalozzischule
Idstein was an
eye-opener for the
students.
The school is a
Renaissance
Castle with over
1,000 students
and 110 teachers.
Vanderkolk
describes the
school as a highly
academic school
for Grades 5 to 12.
The three students
went to
school with their
host sibling,
attending Grade
9, 11 and 12 classes in
English, German,
Drama, History and
Math.
“Because classes were
instructed in German,
the students had a hard
time understanding conversations,”
explained
Vanderkolk, adding they
were able to help
German students with
their translations in
English class.
Each of the students
stayed with a host family
and were completely submerged
in the culture.
Vanderkolk explains
that immersion trips like
these are valuable to
students.
“Seeing how others
live helps us to gain a
greater appreciation for
what we have here and
aspire to learn new
skills and ideas.”
“They have a deeper
understanding of how an
immigrant might feel,
living in a place where
communication is
difficult.”
Despite their differences,
the students also
realized how students all
over the world have
many things in common,
including similar
interests.
Creating this understanding
is exactly what
the PLRD Inclusivity
Project is all about.
“The Inclusivity
Project provides high
school students with an
opportunity to take
action against perceived
injustices in our society -
to combat prejudice and
discrimination to make
our world a better place
