COMMUTER
Data Visulization Infographic
Process
Abby Fargo

Create an information graphic that looks at the “day in the life” of something
or someone. All elements should help develop your narrative, including colors,
type, iconography, groupings of information, graphic style, etc.
Steps to consider in this project are:
Step 1: identify potential “days in the life” to explore
Step 2: create a web and/or word list of ALL the possible things you could
include in your visual. This will include doing research beyond your notepad
TASK
Step 3: identify key areas/groups of information that develop your desired
narrative, and build on them with further information. Make sure that you
have a clear objective/narrative in mind, and write it as a concise statement.
For example, “This information design will explore a day in the life of a professor,
focused on the tasks that students don’t traditionally see. The goal is to
shed light on and bring awareness to the multitasking nature of a professor.”
Step 4: Begin sketching (do at least 10 detailed sketches of possible groupings,
layouts, styles, and narrative)
Step 5: Select a color palette, typefaces, and graphic elements to serve as a
complete style guide for the look of your infographic
Step 6: Design 2-3 rough comps (please be very different with each). Size
is up to you, but be strategic in what you imagine as being your final output
(print or web). I recommend working in Illustrator for graphics/icons and
InDesign to put together the final design
Step 7: Critique and refine

Research for this project took up most of the time when beginning. Not only
did I have to research an overall layout/design for the infographic, but also
the data and statistics about commuters, more specifically in the Boston area.
RESEARCH
I began by looking up helpful designs for infographics, and then moved into
looking at train schedules, colors, and useful times. Finally, I researched
relevent statistics and data on commuters in the United States. I didn’t want
my data to be too narrow because I wanted to be able to see the bigger
picture and overall look at commuters in the United States as well.
