TWT ELECTION 2019 EDITORIAL 

This Saturday we all go to the polls and elect a new 

Federal Government for the Commonwealth of Australia 

for the next three years with effects that will continue 

for years to follow. 

Therefore it is incumbent on each and everyone of us to carefully 

consider the policies being offered to us before we cast our vote. 

Unfortunately neither of the major parties are prepared to tackle 

the real issues facing all of us: primarily the cost of electricity 

combined with the real prospect of blackouts because of the failure 

to guarantee new power stations combined with the imminent 

return of water restrictions and rationing because of no new dams. 

Both these possible disasters are the result of the major parties 

sucking up to the Greens policies attempting to win their votes. 

Former Liberals Prime Minister John Howard lost his own seat and 

government because of this and his attempt to accommodate the 

hoax of global warming and man made climate change.

Open Day at Historic 

Willandra Addington 

Ryde’s two most noteable historic houses will be open 

to the public this Sunday: 

“Willandra” or Ryde House at 770 Victoria Road and 

Addington at 813-815 Victoria Road, Ryde. 

WILLANDRA will be open from 10am to 3pm hosted by Ryde District 

Historical Society with refreshments available. The house 

has just been freshly painted and refurbished by Ryde Council. 

A feature will be a tour to historic St Anne’s Church and surrounds 

departing Willandra at 2pm. Society publications will also 

be available for purchase. 

ADDINGTON will be open from 2pm to 4pm hosted by the St 

George’s Guilds of former scouts and guides and The Friends 

of Addington. Addington is the headquarters of the St George’s 

Guilds and houses Australia’s only Scouts, Guides and Guilds Museum. 

Afternoon teas are served from Australia’s oldest continuously 

used kitchen dating back to convict settler James Stuart 1798. 

Addington is open every third Sunday of the month and Ryde 

District Historical Society are also hoping to in future have open 

house on the third Sundays to coincide with Addington.

Overhead footbridge 

a better solution 

Dear Sir, 

I refer to the article 

about wanting a pedestrian 

crossing on Constitution 

Road West outside 

the new Meadowbank 

skate park (The Weekly 

Times May 8, 2019). 

I travel past this park four 

times a day, every day, all 

year. 

I have seen the dangers 

for myself and am convinced 

that a pedestrian 

crossing is not the best solution. 

I believe the better outcome 

would be an overhead 

footbridge together 

with fencing along the Victoria 

Road side of the street 

to discourage road crosses. 

This would prevent risk 

to a child or elderly person. 

This could also lessen cars 

double parked to drop off. 

I have had a grandchild hit 

by a car three years ago by 

the careless action of a parent 

and the impact that has 

had on the child, his sister 

who witnessed it, the driver 

involved. 

I don’t wish this on anyone 

so please consider this option 

and not put children’s 

crossing on a major road 

before acknowledging 

costs to rectif 

I call on the Council to 

consider the proposal as a 

matter of urgency. 

PS I believe bridges are 

unsightly but in this case, 

now needed.

Bob Selinger amuses 

me. He claims to be 

a school teacher yet 

he appears to me to 

struggle differentiating 

between foreign investment 

and foreign ownership. 

A report released by 

Credit Suisse in 2017 

showed that 25 percent 

of all new housing sold in 

NSW was bought by the 

Chinese. 

Victoria was nearly 20 

percent. 

That is an enormous 

amount of housing being 

bought by the Chinese 

keeping prices high 

and making it difficult for 

many locals to attain the 

Australian dream of owning 

their own property. 

Do our politicians care? 

I certainly don’t think so. 

When the Chinese buy 

our housing Bob where 

do you think the rents received 

and capital gains 

made go to. 

I will tell you Bob, they 

go back to China. 

Same with the developments 

they undertake, 

the mines and farms and 

infrastructure projects 

they control. 

They are not buying 

our assets because they 

want to make us rich 

they buy them because 

they want to make themselves

Liberals don’t support 

a ban on water 

sold in plastic bottles 

because people will 

buy soft drink instead. 

There is a big difference 

– water comes freely

Dear Sir, 

Coal and oil are made 

from plants and animals 

that died millions of years 

ago when the atmosphere 

contained abundant carbon 

dioxide plant food. 

They are now very concentrated 

forms of energy 

which can be extracted 

from very small areas of 

land. 

Burning these natural 

hydro-carbons returns CO2 

and fresh water to the atmosphere 

thus greatly assisting 

global plant growth. 

If we are lucky these extra 

gases in the atmosphere 

may also slightly delay the 

start of Earth’s next cooling 

cycle, but this looks 

unlikely. 

Ethanol and biodiesel are 

made from plants growing 

now - sugar cane, beets, 

palm oil and grains. Growing 

these crops requires 

large areas of land and 

valuable fresh water for irrigation. 

Growing bio-fuel crops 

extracts CO2 from the atmosphere 

but burning them 

quickly puts it back. This is 

a zero-sum game that does 

nothing positive for the environment 

or the climate. 

Coal and oil are thus more 

enviro-friendly than biofuels. 

Locking the gate on coal, 

oil and gas while supporting 

policies that waste land, 

food crops and water for 

motor fuels is environmental 

desecration. 

Speculators should be 

free to make biofuels but 

these should not be subsidised 

or mandated.

Food & Wine Festival 

celebrated its 20th year 

on May 5 bringing fine 

wines, gourmet foods, 

produce and live entertainment 

to the large and 

enthusiastic crowd of 

locals and visitors who 

flocked to Boronia Park. 

This fabulous charity 

event run by volunteers 

has raised thousands of 

dollars in aid of community 

groups and charities 

since 1999. This year 

there were 57 stalls and 

the total amount raised 

was $30,000. Congratulations

Powerhouse precinct 

CITY of Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson 

has welcomed the announcement from the 

State Government that six design teams have 

been shortlisted to create the new Powerhouse 

Precinct in Parramatta. 

“Congratulations to all the teams who have been shortlisted 

to develop concept designs for the landmark Powerhouse 

Precinct in Parramatta,” Lord Mayor Wilson said. 

“With such a high calibre of Australian and international 

architecture firms involved in this exciting competition, 

the Powerhouse Precinct will undoubtedly be a worldclass 

destination that will attract hundreds of thousands 

of visitors to Sydney’s Central City.” 

“I look forward to seeing the vision these teams have for 

the design of the new museum and precinct. 

“It will be a transformational project for arts and culture 

in Western Sydney, and help to position Parramatta as a 

truly global city.” 

The Powerhouse Precinct is one of a number of Citychanging 

projects underway, including the Parramatta 

Light Rail, Parramatta Square, and Riverside Theatres

Monster cane toad found in Ermington park 

A MONSTER cane toad was found recently at Stevens Street Reserve in 

Ermington by a City of Parramatta Council bush regeneration contractor. 

The contractor contacted 

Council and 

council staff. Council 

staff dressed in protective 

wear, including 

gloves, long-sleeved 

shirts and glasses, and 

collected the toad. It 

was taken to a vet to be 

destroyed. 

This was the second 

cane toad sighting in the 

City of Parramatta in six 

weeks. 

“Members of the public 

are reminded not 

to touch cane toad,” 

the City of Parramatta 

warned. 

“ They secrete a poison 

than can be dangerous 

to pets and humans.

Popular local waterfront 

sports park gets facelift 

MORRISON Bay Park is getting a facelift . 

The popular sports venue in Putney 

is to get a landscaped walkway 

on the south western side, a 

new fitness station. a multipurpose 

outdoor court with basketball rings 

and a new cricket net. 

The works are due to be completed 

by the City of Ryde later 

this year and will be illuminated by 

pathway lighting along the waterfront 

and along the eastern edge of 

the park. 

There will also be an upgrade to 

the foot bridge over the canal near 

Frances Road. 

The works are the initiative of Clr 

Roy Maggio with the support of 

Mayor Jerome Laxale, councillors 

and staff. 

“I am making things happen for 

the people of Ryde,” Clr Maggio 

said. 

“ My first motion in 2017 when 

elected was to improve our parks, 

especially Morrison Bay Park and 

this motion was unanimously supported 

by councillors. 

“I am now pleased to confirm that 

after all the investigations these 

works at Morrison Bay Park are 

scheduled to be undertaken this financial 

year,with construction now 

underway.” 

He said that funding for these 

works is expected to be part of the 

Council’s draft Four Year Delivery 

Plan. 

“The main objective is to make 

the city and our parks active and 

healthy places go and for all to enjoy,” 

he said. 

“With the latest success of the 

skate board park in Meadowbank, 

known as Roy’s Place, I’m proud to 

be part of a council team delivering 

what matters to the people of 

Ryde.” 

He said feedback from families 

about the skate board park has 

been overwhelmingly supportive. 

“The regular comment being 

made to me is that it gets the kids 

out instead of on being on electronic 

devices all day.”

THE Hunters Hill Seniors Hub has been restored and renamed thanks to a grant of $19,800 from 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts. 

The hub has dropped the 

seniors tag from the name 

and replaced it with the word 

“community” to reflect the 20 

different services it provides 

to people of all abilities and 

backgrounds. 

The restored cottage on 

Gladesville Road was officially 

opened by Mr Roberts on 

Friday who told The Weekly 

Times he is impressed with 

the way staff and volunteers 

have used the grant money. 

“What a fantastic job these 

staff members and volunteers 

do for the community and to 

walk in here today is like walking 

into the set of one of those 

home make over programs 

you see on television,” he 

said. 

“We have taken a run down 

but functional old place and 

turned it into a cottage and 

into a home, complete with a 

new TV, artwork and furnishings. 

“As the Minister for Corrective 

Services I can tell you we 

are building new prisons at the 

moment and I might need the 

expertise of staff and volunteers 

here who have achieved 

a wonderful result within their 

budget.”

Manager Branka Ivkovic 

thanked Mr Roberts for the 

grant and said she looked forward 

to welcoming new and 

valued people. 

“We are a busy centre which 

runs services for seniors and 

people with a disability,” Ms 

Ivkovic said. 

“Men’s and women’s groups 

come here on specific days 

for a program of activities and 

outings and disability groups 

of younger people meet here 

for activities before being taken 

on outings every Monday 

and Friday.”

John F Booth AM nominated 

for Freedom Of Municipality 

A MOTION to award The Weekly Times Managing Editor John F Booth 

AM with Freedom Of The Municipality of Hunters Hill was defeated by five 

votes to two during Monday night’s council meeting. 

Deputy Mayor Ben Collins and his Liberal 

colleague Zac Miles proposed the motion in 

recognition of Mr Booth’s “extraordinary and 

ongoing contribution to journalism” in Hunters 

Hill but the motion was defeated due to 

a lack of supporting documentation as well 

as concerns about correct procedure and 

protocol. 

But the Deputy Mayor argues that the supporting 

documentation to back Mr Booth’s 

commitment to Hunters Hill is there for all to 

see, delivered in letterboxes across the heritage 

municipality every Wednesday. 

“The Weekly Times has a journalist here 

every week and this is how our residents find 

out about what is happening in Hunters Hill 

and having a journalist here every week is 

a tremendous asset to our community,” he 

said. 

“You can have a voice but you cannot tell 

the story if no one can hear your voice and 

LIBERAL councillors were stunned when 

a motion to seek state government feedback 

on a possible underground car park 

at Gladesville Reserve was defeated by five 

votes to two during Monday night’s council 

meeting. 

The motion sought to write to Transport 

Minister Andrew Constance to sound out 

his view on government funding for the car 

park which would create parking spots for 

nearby ferry and bus commuters. 

“I don’t want to know if the state government 

has an appetite for this because 

I do not like the idea,” Clr Elizabeth Krassoi 

said. 

Councillor Jim Sanderson said he could

for this community.” 

Councillor Miles described Mr Booth as a 

larger than life character. 

“He’s the only man I know who could order 

John Howard about, at will.”

commitment in Hunters Hill 

“So this is about protecting our biosphere, 

everything from big animals to bugs on the 

ground need protecting.” 

Concerned environmentalist Robert 

Hayes said bush land management requires 

a special focus, expertise and a 

committee exclusively dedicated to the 

task before it. 

“The advisory committee would not only 

advise the council on how to meet statutory 

obligations but will encourage volunteers.” 

Councillors heard that Hunters Hill needs 

to meet state government environmental 

standards by 2021. 

Britain’s popular village park land committees 

– patronised by His Royal Highness 

Prince Charles – could provide a model for 

Hunters Hill.

“When he’s on….it really 

sends a message 

through to the rest of 

the boys,” he said. 

“We’ve all been trying 

to convince him to stay 

on for at least another 

year because for me he 

could do it on his ear. 

We saw the quality he 

possesses - he’s got 

the touch, he’s got the 

speed, he’s got the finish.” 

“But the decision is up 

to him - he knows his 

body and he’s decided 

to call time and what 

better way to end it than 

in a grand final.” 

Wilkinson also paid 

tribute to coach Steve 

Corica, noting his seamless 

transition from assistant 

coach under 

Graham Arnold - now 

the Socceroos boss - to 

head coach. 

“The assistant coach 

can have a few different 

hats on; they can 

be closer to the playing 

group, have a bit 

of banter around, but 

when you step up to 

that head coach you’ve 

got to remove yourself 

a bit from the playing 

group and that can 

be difficult,” Wilkinson 

said. 

“But he’s done it so 

well and he’s been first 

class. 

“It was a lot of pressure 

stepping up into 

the job with the amount 

of success we’ve had 

over the last couple of 

years, so for him to take 

us to an FFA Cup final, 

finish second in the 

league and now obviously 

qualify for a grand 

final, for him it’s been a

INGROWN toenails are 

the most common cause of 

painful nails. 

The medical name for 

ingrown toenails is onychocryptosis 

and the first 

signs include swollen skin 

around the nail, tenderness 

to touch, and formation of 

granulation tissue, which 

can progress to become infected 

in some cases. 

They are very common 

among teenagers and 

young adults because the 

nails are thin and sharp and 

the skin is very soft and 

fragile. 

What’s the Cause? 

• Poor cutting technique 

- cut too short or in wrong 

shape 

• Ripping your nails- leads 

to jagged edges 

• Poor footwear- tight 

shoes and ill-fitting toe box. 

•Abnormal nail shape 

or nail fold- Broad nails, 

curved nails and increased 

skin bulk 

• Odema, obesity and diabetes 

• Trauma- kicking your toe 

or ongoing trauma 

• Family history 

• Hyperhydrosis- sweaty 

feet increases risk of infections 

and skin is very soft 

and easily irritated 

• Poor foot hygiene 

At Home Care 

General rule of thumb is 

don’t cut your nails down 

the sides. 

It is best to cut your toenails 

regularly keeping the

straight across like a square 

or with a slight curve taking 

care not to cut too short or 

down the sides. 

Filing the toenail is a very 

safe alternative and helps 

to get rid of any rough 

edges. 

If pain presents in the 

sides of your nails- begin 

wearing open shoes using 

antiseptics such as betadine, 

hydrogen peroxide or 

saline and applying a bandaid 

to keep the area clean 

from infection until pain disappears. 

If the pain doesn’t subside 

in a few days or gets 

worse please see your GP 

or podiatrist. 

How Can a Podiatrist 

Help? 

Podiatrists are trained 

specialists who see ingrown 

toenails all day everyday. 

They can assist in proper 

cutting techniques and 

have appropriate tools for 

thickened or abnormal 

shaped nails. 

They can manage ingrown 

toenails conservatively 

through trimming the 

nails and reducing pain by 

removing the painful nail 

section, which allows the 

skin to settle. 

A podiatrist may recommend 

alternative treatments 

including padding, 

taping, packing and footwear 

advice. 

For ongoing or recurrent 

onychocryptosis with constant 

infections, podiatrists 

can perform minor nail surgeries 

as a more permanent 

fix. 

The most common procedure 

is called a Partial 

Nail Avulsion (PNA) to remove 

the sides of the painful 

nail and cauterize the 

matrix (root of the nail). 

Consult your podiatrist to 

discuss further information 

and advice on managing 

your nails. 

There are many contributing 

factors that cause 

ingrown toenails but please 

don’t dig out your ingrown 

nails. 

Instead, try to keep the 

sides high and your feet 

clean. 

It is important to seek 

medical advice for painful 

nails that don’t settle with 

conservative care within a 

few days. 

If there is excessive inflammation 

and infection it 

is important to get antibiotics, 

most commonly from 

your GP.

known laws 

make road sense 

THE State Government 

has introduced two driving 

laws which seem to 

be heavy handed law 

enforcement but actually 

make a good deal of 

sense. 

The first is the offence of 

beeping your car horn to 

“wake up” or alert the driver 

in front of you that the traffic 

lights have turned green. 

The ‘illegal use of a warning 

device’ law carries a 

steep penalty in Sydney of 

$298 with more than 800 

drivers being penalised for 

it so far. 

The second offence is 

leaving a car door unlocked, 

which carries a penalty of 

$112. 

In the first case, tooting a 

horn is a dangerous practice 

because it often prompts 

the driver in front to react immediately 

and instinctively, 

potentially accelerating into 

an unseen pedestrian. 

It also diminishes the impact 

of the horn as an emergency 

warning device when 

it is used often and unnecessarily 

used as a response 

motivated by impatience, 

not danger. 

In some European countries 

it is regarded as aggressive 

driver behaviour 

and road rage, the electronic 

equivalent to yelling a threat 

from a car window. 

Chief Inspector Phillip 

Brooks, from the NSW Police 

Traffic and Highway Patrol 

put it this way. 

“In a patrolling police 

sense, police would intercept 

that vehicle.” 

“When we talk about distraction 

more broadly, on a 

mobile phone or otherwise, 

it’s obviously a contributing 

factor in serious and fatal 

crashes.” 

With police resources being 

diverted to theft from vehicles 

– especially in Ryde – 

the second law also makes 

sense. 

Chief Inspector Brooks 

said while fining drivers for 

leaving a car unlocked was 

often an unpopular fine, it 

is a tool police had at their 

disposal to deter thieves 

and raise awareness among 

motorists. 

“Police on foot patrol will 

see an unlocked vehicle and 

respond to that as a deterrence 

factor,” he said. 

“The potential media opportunity 

that comes out of 

that concern obviously creates 

an awareness for the 

benefit of others.”

Colour My World staff celebrate the Children’s Centre’s 10th anniversary milestone. 

Tenth anniversary milestone for 

Colour My World Children’s Centre 

NO dark sky or clouds were going to take away from the sun shining down on Colour 

My World Children’s Centre as it celebrated its 10th Birthday last month. 

A family owned business, 

Robert and Diane Saba are very 

proud to have reached this incredible 

milestone. 

Having three children of their 

own, who are now young men, 

their dream stems from over 20 

years ago and it became reality 

in April 2009 when the West 

Ryde service opened its doors 

for the very first time. 

Their mission wasn’t to just 

open a Preschool or a Childcare 

centre but rather to create 

a “home away from home for 

the children of our community 

while they learn”. 

Colour My World had to be 

another family for their families. 

Both centres, located at West 

Ryde and Ermington, have two 

incredibly close knit teams creating 

a family like atmosphere 

amongst the services, which 

flows through to the children 

and right throughout the whole 

centre. 

When you visit the centre you 

can’t help but feel the warmth 

of the staff and the greetings 

of the service which - if you are 

lucky enough - you are greeted 

with open arms by the owner 

herself. Miss Diane embraces 

everyone as part of the CMW 

family, because she is very

Bowling Club’s 2019 Graduation Singles title after a hard fought 31-26 

victory over Ian Pendleton in an entertaining final. The talented Collins is

GLADESVILLE Ryde Magic FC celebrated Mothers Day last Sunday with 

a 4-0 win over Hawkesbury Hawks at Christie Park at Macquarie Park. 

Goals for the local team were scored by Chris Triantis, Peter Voukidis, Chris Gaitatzis 

and Christos Tomaras. 

The win catapults Magic to second place in the Federation NSW National Premier 

League 3 competition. 

In other fixtures, Gladesville Ryde Magic and Hawkesbury Hawks drew 1-1 in the Under 

20s clash and 2-2 in the Under 18s encounter.

WEST Rugby Women’s Hockey Club is celebrating 40 years of hockey for women and girls.

The club was formed 

in 1979 and was a combination 

of players from 

teams formally in the 

Canterbury and Meadowbank 

Hockey Associations. 

Known then as Concord 

Hockey, the club 

evolved shortly after to 

West Rugby Women’s 

Hockey and has fielded 

teams in various competitions 

every year 

since. 

The club currently 

consists of two Grass 

teams which both play 

in the Senior Women’s 

NWSHA grass competition 

played Saturday 

afternoons at Meadowbank 

or Parramatta. 

They also have players 

who compete in the 

Sydney Women’s Hockey 

Masters League (Association 

representative 

teams).

Fitting honour for pioneer 

Ryde swim coach Ursula

LEGENDARY swimming coach Ursula Carlile has been recognised for her 

sterling contribution to sport in the City of Ryde. 

The accomplished 

mentor was honoured 

at the recent 

TWT Club Six/Ryde 

Sports Foundation 

Sports Star of the 

Year Gala Dinner 

at Ryde Eastwood 

Leagues Club - earning 

a special Contribution 

to Sport award 

for yeoman service 

to local swimming. 

Since 1980 the Ryde 

Sports Foundation, 

in conjunction with 

The Weekly Times, 

has been presenting 

monthly and annual 

awards to sportsmen 

and women on 

a pathway towards 

Australian representation. 

On occasion the 

RSF have also presented 

special 

awards to the people 

behind the success 

of our local sports 

stars and in 82 year 

old Ursula they don’t 

come better.

the doyen of swimming 

coaches when 

presenting her with 

the award on the 

night. 

“In a very special 

and unique way Ursula 

has played a 

priceless role in the 

lives of the many 

swimmers and water 

polo players who 

have received the 

RSF awards over the 

last 49 years,” said 

Terry. 

“One of those 

swimmers, Robert 

Thorpe was a 2018- 

19 Sports Star nominee 

to continue the 

long list of Carlile 

coached swimmers 

recognised over the 

years.” 

“At the same time 

Ursula has forged 

a global profile of 

her own in the highly 

competitive and 

challenging world of 

swimming,” he said. 

The story of Ursula 

Carlile’s contribution 

to swimming locally 

and globally is an impressive 

one indeed. 

Back in 1960 Ursula, 

along with her 

husband Forbes, 

was appointed to the 

Australian Olympic 

swimming coaching 

team as Sports Science 

advisers for the 

Rome Olympics. 

Ursula was the 

world leader in taking 

a scientific approach 

to sports performance. 

In 1964, Ursula and 

Forbes were again 

making a global 

splash when they 

were appointed as 

the joint coaches of 

the Dutch swimming 

team for the Tokyo 

Olympics – this was 

the beginning of a 

long and close relationship 

between 

Australian and Dutch 

swimming. 

1972 was the highlight 

of Ursula’s 

coaching career, being 

chosen as Australia’s 

first women 

Olympic swimming 

coach for the Munich 

Olympic Games. 

And there was no 

doubting why she 

was with five of her 

own swimmers from 

the Ryde club in the 

Australian squad – 

including swimmers 

who became household 

names in Australian 

Sport in the 

great Shane Gould, 

Karen Moras, Jenny 

Turrell, and Gail Neill. 

Gould was the star 

of those Olympic 

Games at the age of 

15 – winning three 

gold medals, all in 

world record time. 

In 1971 she held the 

world record in every 

female freestyle 

event from 100m to 

1500 metres. 

But it is not only 

these global achievements 

as a swimming 

coach that make Ursula 

a perfect candidate 

for a Contribution 

to Sport award. 

“Ursula is truly a 

local legend,” says 

Terry. 

“In 1961 when Ryde 

Council built the 

original Ryde Swimming 

Centre, Ursula 

and Forbes became 

its first coaches,” he 

revealed. “Can you 

believe they originally 

drove and picked 

up their swimmers 

in the squad each 

morning. They rented 

a house not far from 

Ryde Pool in Cross 

Steet where Ursula 

still lives,” reflected 

Terry. 

“They then built 

Sydney’s first indoor 

heated learnto-swim 

centre in 

the backyard – without 

Council approval 

and without the 

knowledge of the 

home owners who 

were overseas. That 

Learn-to-swim centre 

remains in operation 

(with many 

reconstructions) and 

is the birthplace of 

Australia’s largest 

swimming organisation, 

Carlile Swimming. 

“It is Ursula’s long 

commitment to this 

centre which impresses 

me the 

most,” said Terry. 

“The many thousands 

of young Ryde 

children who have 

learnt to swim at this 

centre are a contribution 

to local sport 

that can’t be quantified. 

Many of those 

swimmers have progressed 

to being the 

parents and grandparents 

of Carlile 

taught swimmers. In 

the early days many 

were taught by Ursula. 

In recent times the 

teachers have been 

a long list of young 

Ryde coaches who 

found Carlile Swimming 

a rewarding 

career starter under 

Ursula’s guidance. 

“In 1961, when 

the Ryde Pool was 

opened, the Ryde 

Mayor of the time 

started the Ryde 

Swimming Club. Ursula 

has been on 

the committee of 

that club continuously 

until today with 

many years as its 

Head Coach. Until 

2019 she has been 

the starter at weekly 

club races. She still 

starts club races 

with diving practice, 

off the blocks, for the 

5 and 6 year olds. 

Terry said that if 

you wanted to cross 

paths with Ursula 

today, it wasn’t difficult. 

“Most mornings 

you’ll find her at 

Next Generation in 

the gym, often on 

the rowing machine; 

most days at the 

pool in the backyard 

at Cross Street; most 

afternoons at swimming 

squads at Ryde 

Pool and most Friday 

nights at Ryde Club 

Races,” he added.

to Sport award 

from the Ryde Sports 

Foundation that recognised 

his tremendous 

support of local sport 

over the past four decades. 

It was a proud moment 

and thoroughly 

deserved honour for JB 

who has helped launch 

the careers of many local 

champion athletes with 

coverage in The Weekly 

Times and acquire valuable 

sponsorship for 

the Foundation over the 

years. 

He received his award 

from RSF chairman and 

former Ryde Mayor Jim 

Hull at the TWT/Club Six 

Ryde Sports Foundation 

Sports Star of the Year

Born again local heroes Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah combined with rising star Luke Brooks 

to sensationally thrash the PantherPets in the Bananaland Magic Round last Friday night.

Try! Try! Try! Try! Try! The Tigers celebrate five tries in almost as many minutes 

against Ivan Cleary’s Penrith PantherPets in Bananaland at the Magic Round Gala 

weekend. 

The Tigeriffic Trio 

weaved their magic 

and inspired the 

whole team to pull 

more than rabbits 

out of the hat as 

they spanked Ivan’s 

kids and sent them 

back to their foot 

of the mountains 

kindergarten with 

their tails firmly between 

their legs. 

The Tigers were 

the talk of the Magic 

Round weekend 

scoring four rapid 

fire tries in six 

opening minutes 

to bedazzle Ivan’s 

kids. 

Skipper Moses 

Mbye headed the 

list followed by 

Luke Brooks then 

Esarn Masters and 

Corey Thompson. 

Rob Jennings followed 

at the seventeenth 

minute 

with Esarn galloping 

over again in 

the second half for 

a final scoreline of 

30-4 at final whistle 

also having added 

another six points 

from three over the 

little black dot.. 

By that time the 

big hearted Tigers 

had eased up a 

little feeling sorry 

for their former 

part-time coach 

who had departed 

home for nappy 

change. 

This Friday the 

Tigers venture 

south of the border 

to Mexico city to 

consolidate their 

possie on the NRL 

premiership ladder 

as they focus 

on grand final honours.
