Editorial
Dear customers,
35 in quick succession! Is it possible to prepare a new edition of
Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas in exceptional quality in just
a few years’ time? The answer is: Yes! – with an exceptional editor –
Jonathan Del Mar. We are grateful that we found such a person to
work with us on this special project.
Jonathan Del Mar is not only known for his astounding knowledge
of Beethoven’s music and his phenomenal memory, he also works
with remarkable precision and speed. At times, one is reminded of
Beethoven’s words: “I live only in my notes, and with one work barely
finished, the other is already started; the way I write now I often
find myself working on three, four things at the same time.” (1801).
The edition of the piano sonatas was scheduled to be completed
by 2020, the year of Beethoven’s 250 th anniversary. This was a
timeline that kept all of us – the editor, proofreader, engraver,
production and me – on our toes. The Beethoven anniversary was
our incentive and constituted a great challenge for us as a music
publisher. We made it and it is with pride and joy that we now
present you with our new edition.
Join us as we look forward to one of the most important music
anniversaries of our time. There will be no shortage of outstanding
performances of Beethoven’s works, of special events, and festive
celebrations – making a choice might not be easy at times.
But when it comes to selecting your music editions, the choice is
simple: For Beethoven, use Bärenreiter!
For our music dealers, we have many promotional materials and gifts
for you to make a wonderful display of Beethoven and Bärenreiter
Urtext in your shop. Please see pages 50–51 of this New Publications
Bulletin for all the details. Our newsletter will keep you updated
about current dealer promotions. And don’t miss our film “Searching
for the True Beethoven. Bärenreiter Urtext Editions”.
Look forward to the Beethoven Anniversary Year!
Beethoven: A limited edition
with a special price
from: Sonata quasi una Fantasia op. 27 no. 1, movt. 3 · BA 10853
Our original edition of the Piano Sonatas op. 27 which includes the
famous “Moonlight Sonata” (BA 10853, € 11.95) has now been made
available for the Beethoven Anniversary Year 2020 in a limited print
run with a special price of only € 3.00.
At the dawn of the 19 th century Beethoven struck out on new paths
with his two opus 27 sonatas, each of which he called a “sonata quasi
una fantasia”. Both of them, in particular the second sonata later,
nicknamed the “Moonlight Sonata”, were destined for immortality.
Why present a new Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas?
The answer lies in the uncompromisingly precise editorial work of
Jonathan Del Mar. This Urtext edition of the two Sonatas op. 27 offers
a musical text that meets the highest scholarly demands as well as
the practical needs of performers. Along with a correction in the third
movement of op. 27 no. 1 (the 1 st eighth note in the right hand is a C,
not a C-flat as noted in other Urtext editions and even corrected as
such in Brahms’ personal copy), the musical text is presented in a
reader-friendly layout with practical page turns. The detailed
Critical Commentary offers information and explanations regarding
alternative readings and all editorial decisions.
Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas
Following the critically acclaimed publication of the 35 Piano
Sonatas in separate editions, Bärenreiter now presents
Beethoven’s Complete Piano Sonatas in three volumes. This
edition, which is unparalleled in terms of its philological
accuracy, has been edited by world-renowned Beethoven
expert Jonathan Del Mar guaranteeing a musical text at the
forefront of musicological scholarship.
Each volume is equipped with a table of contents including
incipits of each sonata. Running titles with opus and movement
numbers enable a quick identification of individual works and
movements. Volume I includes a Foreword (Eng/Ger) which
covers all salient editorial issues with regard to Beethoven’s
notation and performance practice issues, supplemented by
facsimile pages.
An indispensable standard work at the cutting edge of
Beethoven scholarship!
• A definitive new critical performing edition at the cutting
edge of Beethoven scholarship
• Elegant, ready-friendly layout with practical page turns
• Table of contents with incipits as well as running titles
enable easy location of works
Eminent pianists on this edition:
“Jonathan Del Mar’s Beethoven edition is
unparalleled in terms of its precision. What I
value most about it is the use of lesser-known or
previously unknown sources, the commentary,
which is the most extensive to date, and the
discussion of problematic sections.
I wholeheartedly recommend this new edition
of Beethoven piano sonatas.”
(Paul Badura-Skoda)
“An edition such as this Bärenreiter Urtext
edition is important in that it lets me work with
"only" the core, the original foundation that the
composer – in this case Beethoven – provided
me with as working material. In its pure form,
this is of course a gift, but it is also only the
beginning.” (Igor Levit)
Beethoven’s “Diabelli Variations”, written between 1819 and 1823,
mark the pinnacle of his œuvre for variations and next to Bach’s
“Goldberg Variations” form one of the most important contributions
to this genre. In addition to Beethoven, 50 other
composers from Austria, mainly Vienna, followed Diabelli’s call to
create variations for his famous waltz, among them Czerny,
Moscheles, Fr. X. Mozart, Schubert, the 11-year-old Liszt and
J. N. Hummel.
The variations first printed by Diabelli fictively as “Fatherlandish
Union of Artists Part I” (Beethoven’s op. 120) and “Part II” (the 50
variations of Vienna’s “most excellent composers and virtuosos”) are
presented here by Mario Aschauer for the first time in one edition.
Furthermore the variations of Part II appear in an Urtext edition for
the first time. The musical text is based on a meticulous study of the
sources and for the first time relevant discrepancies between the
main sources are presented in light grey print.
Volume III of Schubert’s Piano Sonatas includes the tuneful, dance-like
Sonata in G major D 894 (1827), sometimes called the “Fantasie” sonata,
as well as the three great sonatas in C minor, A major and B-flat major
(D 958, 959 and 960), which were conceived as a triptych and constitute
the composer’s greatest contribution to the piano sonata genre.
The works pay homage to the three late sonatas of Beethoven.
This scholarly-critical Urtext edition is based on the definitive musical
text of the “New Schubert Edition” and presents the works in a
spacious new engraving with practical page turns. It includes an
informative Foreword and detailed notes (Ger/Eng) on central
performance practice issues such as the use of pedals and Schubert’s
distinctive manner of notating accents. It is rounded off by a
Critical Commentary (Eng) with performance-related alternative
readings. Schubert’s drafts for individual sonata movements can be
The Piano Sonata in B minor op. 58 constitutes Chopin’s third and
most significant contribution to the genre. An entirely new evaluation
of the sources by the editor resulted in a revised reading of the work.
This edition is based on the French first edition, a version to which
Chopin added corrections until and even beyond the time of printing.
Some of the most important variants can be found in the first
movement (such as in m. 96), but also in the Largo and the Finale.
A Foreword (Ger/Eng) addressing the complex source situation and
notes on performance practice by Paul Badura-Skoda, a pioneer of the
historically-informed style of playing, provide extensive information
for the study of this newly edited work, presented here in an elegant
engraving with practical page turns. The Critical Commentary (Eng)
extensively documents readings and all editorial decisions. Chopin’s
original fingering is supplemented by fingering by the editor.
Beethoven often incorporated musical influences from other
countries in his works. Jean Kleeb has picked up on this idea and
developed it further in these arrangements for piano solo. In his
tributes to Beethoven he emphasizes ethnic attributes such as
“alla turca” or he coaxes exotic rhythms out of certain works with
playful exaggeration. At other times, he simply enjoys demonstrating
the stark differences between the “classical” piano piece and world
Beethoven’s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by
Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following
the lead of Mozart’s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part
become increasingly independent from the piano part.
raises some questions. These passages had previously been
One example can be found in Beethoven’s “Tempo di Minuetto”
from Sonata op. 30 No. 3, where he uses a notational idiosyncracy
based on C.P.E. Bach’s “Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu
the first edition published during Beethoven’s lifetime, has not been
In addition, a score through a chord can also not be found in previous
In May of 1802, the “Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung” praised the
violin sonatas op. 23 and 24 as being “... among the best Beethoven
has written, which is to say that they are among the best being
written at all. The composer’s original, fiery and bold spirit …
becomes more and more apparent now ...”
The time during which Beethoven composed his “Spring Sonata”,
which was to become increasingly popular during the course of the
19 th century, was marked by a frantic surge of compositional
creativity. “I live only in my notes, and with one work barely finished,
the other is already started; the way I write now I often find myself
working on three, four things at the same time.”, he wrote in a letter
to Wegeler on 29 June 1801. However during this time, Beethoven also
suffered from the rapid deterioration of his hearing, a fact he was
still trying to hide and that the enchanting “Spring Sonata” certainly
does not divulge.
A Violin Sonata
“come d’un concerto”
Ludwig van Beethoven:
Sonata in A major
for Pianoforte and Violin
op. 47 “Kreutzer Sonata”
BÄRENREITER URTEXT
An autograph fragment of the Violin Sonata op. 47 is titled, in
Beethoven’s hand, “Sonata mulattica composta per il mulatto
Brischdauer, gran pazzo e compositore mulattico” – meaning
“Mulatto Sonata composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, great
madman and mulatto composer”. The genesis of the sonata, which
was to become famous under the name “Kreutzer Sonata”,
is closely connected to a visit to Vienna by George Augustus Polgreen
Bridgetower (1778–1860), a violinist with an Afro-Caribbean father
and a European mother. In the language of that time, his descent
made him a mulatto.
Beethoven was apparently deeply impressed by Bridgetower’s
musicality and virtuosic abilities. However, when the sonata was
published in 1805, he dedicated it to Rodolphe Kreutzer under the
title “Sonata per il Pianoforte ed uno violino obligato in uno stile
molto concertante come d’un concerto”. The work “in the style of a
concerto” is probably Beethoven’s most demanding violin sonata
and since the 19 th century has formed part of the core repertoire of
the great violin virtuosos.
Before being deported and murdered, Czech composers
Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann, and Hans Krása were
detained at the Terezín (Theresienstadt) Ghetto. Even there they
continued to compose music. Although they suffered the same
tragic fate, their respective creative output was quite unique
with diverse and colorful compositions. Our new series “Terezín
selected chamber music works in new Urtext editions.
BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Edited by Ondřej Pivoda
Pavel Haas was one of Leoš Janáček’s most gifted students. His String
Quartet No. 2 “From the Monkey Mountains” is considered to be one
of the first high points of his œuvre.
In this work, Haas combined elements of Janáček’s compositional
technique with jazz, particularly in the fourth movement’s
instrumentation for string quartet and percussion ad libitum. This
version was premiered in Brno in 1926; later, the work was revised for
string quartet only. For this edition Ondřej Pivoda has reconstructed
the original version, bringing to light passages that were never
published until now.
Although Beethoven did not live to see the publication of his String
Quartets op. 130 and op. 133, he oversaw the production process,
making corrections and putting the works into their final form.
The String Quartet op. 130 is the longest piece within Beethoven’s
extensive chamber music œuvre. Originally, the Große Fuge was
meant to be the final movement of op. 130. Beethoven’s conversation
books document the separation of the Große Fuge from op. 130, its
replacement by a new finale and its assignment to a new opus
“Unintelligible, like Chinese”, a contemporary
Viennese critic remarked on the premiere of
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Große Fuge op. 133 in
March 1826. Before Beethoven penned a more
concise finale, the Große Fuge concluded his String
Quartet in B-flat major op. 130, a remarkable work
in every sense of the word and one of the boldest
of its time. With its six movements, it defies
traditional form and today, it is regarded as a
pinnacle among Beethoven’s late string quartets.
After the composer’s death, the original manuscript
suffered a strange fate. It was separated into
movements and distributed to different owners.
The parts of the autograph strewn across
libraries in Europe and the United States have
now been reunited in this facsimile edition for
the first time in over 190 years.
The facsimile is rendered in high-quality colour
printing, reproducing the autograph in such
detail that Beethoven’s correction process
where he pasted over previous entries becomes
evident. Without disturbing the bibliophilic
overall impression, movement and measure
numbers have been added to each page to
facilitate usage. An Introduction by renowned
musicologist Ulrich Konrad, winner of the
the work’s distinctive features and its history.
Along with Symphonies Nos. 76 and 77 Haydn composed Symphony
No. 78 for a journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless,
H. C. Robbins Landon referred to these works as the “English
Symphonies” as they are stylistically closely linked to “the London
Bach”, Johann Christian Bach. In a letter Haydn wrote to his Paris
publisher Charles-Georges Boyer in 1783, he described the works as
“Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend”, meaning they were light in spirit
and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense
of classical form.
Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle
publishing company regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works,
operas, and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle
The first Urtext edition
of a key orchestral work
Camille Saint-Saëns:
Danse macabre
for Orchestra op. 40
BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Edited by Hugh Macdonald
Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz
Liszt. His own symphonic poem “Danse macabre” reflects not only
his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute
to Liszt’s “Totentanz”.
“Danse macabre” is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns
composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis’ poem. At its premiere, the work
was not well-received; in fact it was booed, possibly due to the “diabolic”
solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which
the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune.
However within ten years the work had become so popular that
Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in “The Carnival of the
Animals”. Since the composer’s death, “Danse macabre” is among the
works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face
of death found in popular mortuary cult.
Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem” is a masterpiece and
constitutes one of the most important works in the history of the
oratorio genre.
For the first time in the history of the work, the full score as well as
the vocal score with a piano reduction by the composer are presented
in scholarly-critical Urtext editions in their own right. They have been
prepared simultaneously by individual editors working in close
collaboration with each other: Peter Schmitz has edited the full score
and Michael Werthmann the vocal score. Both editions are based on
the first print authorized by the composer and are at the cutting edge
of musical scholarship.
Finale (Ode to Joy)
This video helps choral singers with the pronunciation of the
German text in the “Finale” of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
In the first part of the video, you will hear the original poem by
Friedrich Schiller “Ode an die Freude” being read. While the text
is being spoken, you can follow the German words on the screen.
In the second part of the video, sections of the soprano choral
part are used as a model. Section by section, you will hear the
text of the “Finale” spoken in rhythm and tempo, underlaid with
the German text, the international phonetic transcription, and
Japanese Katakana. Subsequently you will hear the soprano choral
part sung. Measure and page numbers refer to the Bärenreiter
vocal score of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (BA 9009-90).
Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” is now available again in hardcover.
Due to numerous customer requests, Bärenreiter will be successively
lower-priced and slightly lighter soft-cover edition with excellent
lay-flat characteristics or you feel that sturdier hardcover editions
of important repertoire works are more likely to survive the rigours
BA 11168-72
Émile Zola’s novel “Thérèse Raquin” tells the story of
a violent crime, of madness, and of self-destruction.
Philipp Maintz chose the subject of the husbandmurdering
heroine for his second stage work
“Thérèse”. The chamber opera calls for two female
and two male singers as well as 11 instrumentalists.
The libretto by Otto Katzameier narrates the action
in an unusual, almost cinematic manner, for which
Philipp Maintz composed an animated, highly
effective music that appeals to the listener on a
very immediate level.
The work was premiered on 14 April 2019 at the
Salzburg Easter Festival.
