Answering Questions
“The actual climb took 9 days, seven days up and 2 down. The
great thing about Kilimanjaro is that anyone can do the climb.”
She says that anybody CAN hike it not that everyone should. “It is
not a technical mountain. However, this doesn’t mean that it is
easy.” Even a professional says it's hard to hike people! “There
are some long, difficult days. The most difficult thing is the
altitude because you don’t know how it will impact your trip.
Altitude is not something you can train for. You want to make
sure that you are physically fit. Because of the altitude, it is likely
trekker will feel unwell at some point on the trail, slight headache
or nausea.” Some other symptoms of altitude sickness are
inability to exercise, fatigue, loss of appetite, lower oxygen in
blood, vomiting, and rapid breathing or shortness of breath I had
both of these different points on the trek. But with Advil and
ginger candies, I was able to continue. I had a 150-liter duffel bag
to carry all my gear. This is because you need clothing for a range
of weather. The temperature at the base of the mountain, when
you start you climb is in the 80s but at the summit, the
temperature will likely be around 15 degrees. I would MAKE SURE
THEY HAVE CAMPED BEFORE. We have a lot of guests that sign
up for the trek but they have never slept outside. Also, I would
recommend that a guest book a trek that allows them enough time
to acclimatize, a trek that is 9-10 in length. This allows your body
a better chance to summit. I don’t think there was.” She also says
with every breath there is a step. Well people, there you have it.
Tips from a professional to hike Mount Kilimanjaro. Have fun
hiking!

“I have 4 months to prepare for this trek.
My training consisted of a variety of
activities. I would go hiking every
weekend, but I slowly increased my
distance and the weight I was carrying in
my daypack. I also did a lot of stairs
workouts. I would get to the Harvard
Stadium or I would go to a parking garage to
do these workouts. This included doing
double or triple steps and then running
down. There was also balance and
weighted workouts. These helped to
straighten my ankles and back. Also, bring A
LOT of water. You should also bring a water
purification set to purify the water on the
way.”

About Erin Knerr
What do you do?
I’m a Trip Manager here at Thomson. I help guests get excited about their upcoming adventure out
in the bush or trekking on a mountain in Tanzania, all the while making sure they have the right
number of socks.
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part about my job is that I get to talk to guests upon their return. This allows me to
relive their trip with them. I get to hear all the wonder and new-found love for a country that has
come to steal a piece of my soul and everyone else who visits.
The best thing I’ve ever done is: Climb Kilimanjaro. This is something that was never really on
my bucket list because, well, I never thought it would be possible. But not only did I get to trek, I
summited with some amazing people!
Everyone tells me I need to bake more shoo fly pie! I grew up in PA Dutch country and this a
very common treat. Not many people outside this area knows about it. But I’ve made it for the
office and it has been a big hit ever since.
What do you like doing in your free time? Reading. I’m a book junkie. I have bookshelves
overflowing with books but that doesn’t stop me from wandering around every bookstore I pass.
Used bookstores are even harder to pass by, and I typically leave with a new adventure in hand.
