Our annual Yard of the Month Contest started back up in April and will continue through September. The Cimarron Community Improvement
Association, Inc. Yard of the Month Committee will choose (3) homes and reward them for their exemplary lawn care. The winners of the Yard of
the Month will be provided with a decorative yard sign for display indicating their winning yard along with a $25 Lowe’s gift card. In order to qualify,
residents must be current on their Association Dues for the year. Please note, the sign will be picked up at the end of the month by the Yard of the
Month Committee. We encourage all homeowners to take pride in their homes and our neighborhood this year!

The Cimarron CIA Board of Directors has implemented an Email Blast
feature for residents on their website: www.mascapi.com under MY
NEIGHBROHOOD-Cimarron CIA, Inc. to distribute important information
such as monthly Board meeting notices and agendas, reminders to
pay the HOA dues, annual meeting dates, pool registration dates and
community events like our annual Easter Egg Hunt and our famous Fun
in the Sun. If you are interested in receiving our community E-mail Blasts,
make sure to go to our website and sign up!
Sidewalks
In recent deed restriction inspections, we have noticed a lot damaged
and uneven sidewalks. Sidewalks are the homeowner’s responsibility
to keep in good repair. Concrete Raising Corporation has helped several
homeowners solve their concrete problems.
TRASH PICK UP INFORMATION
If you pay your water bill to Harris County MUD #81: Collection days
are Monday and Thursday for garbage and Monday for recycling. Please
secure all garbage in the 65 gallon black garbage cart with red lid and the
green recycling cart provided by Best Trash. On collection days, please
place the carts as close to the street as practicable, facing forward.

If you pay your water bill to Cimarron MUD: Collection days are Monday

TRASHCAN REMINDERS FOR EVERYONE TO FOLLOW
On collection days make sure to set your trash receptacle out by 7 AM but
no earlier than 6 PM the evening before. Trash receptacles/carts must be
stored inside your garage or behind the fence line at all times. They must
be stored out of public view by 8 AM the following morning. Please note
that a deed restriction violation letter will be sent out for those who do
not comply with the policy.

KISD Summer Band Camp to be Held
at Morton Ranch High School
The seventeenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th ,
8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Morton Ranch High
School July 15 th -19 th . The camp will include daily section rehearsals, full
band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is also part of the
camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a t-shirt if registered
by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need to include a late
registration fee of $25 totaling $155. Any registration request after June
28 th must be sent via email and if approved, payment MUST BE either
cash, money order or cashier’s check.
The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning
at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a
little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an
additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks are
included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The
KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year and we
anticipate a large enrollment again this year.
Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as
soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare
major scales specific to the student’s instrument and an audition
etude, which can be downloaded from the webpage. Students will be
ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total
enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and
Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent Form can be downloaded by
campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/

and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before
the camp begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on
the registration form.
The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those
who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over
the summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive
top quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD
and Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the seventeenth annual
Katy ISD Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills
sharp for the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be
distributed to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp
brochures can also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage.

Board of Trustees Names
Deputy Superintendent for Katy ISD
During the Katy Independent School District April Board meeting this
evening, Board of Trustees voted 7-0 to name Leslie Haack as the new
Deputy Superintendent for the District. Ms. Haack returns to Katy ISD, where
she began her educational career back in 1998 at Taylor High School as a
teacher and assistant coach. The following year, she transferred to Cinco
Ranch High School where she taught and coached for two years prior to
being named Assistant Principal in 2001. Ms. Haack held that position
until she was promoted to Associate Principal in 2004. Four years later, in
2008, she was named principal at Sealy High School in Sealy Independent
School District and served in that capacity for one year prior to transferring
to the same position at George Ranch High School in Lamar Consolidated
Independent School District. While serving in Lamar CISD, she was named
Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education and three years later, she
was promoted to Deputy Superintendent for Support Services. As Deputy
Superintendent, Ms. Haack will oversee School Leadership and Support
Services, Operations and Athletics. Ms. Haack is a graduate of the University
of Kansas and she earned a master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University.
Thirteen Katy ISD Students Earn
Highest Possible ACT Score
Katy Independent School District is celebrating a rare feat: 13 of its high
school students recently found out that they obtained a perfect score, a 36,
on the ACT exam. Not only is this a major achievement for the district but it’s
a rare one as well, considering that less than .1 percent of all test takers earn
the top score. Only 3,741 out of the nearly 2.1 million students who took the
ACT earned a composite score of 36. In a letter to these students ACT Chief
Executive Officer Marten Roorda congratulated them for their outstanding
performance and stated, “Your exceptional scores will provide any college or
university with ample evidence of your readiness for the academic rigors that

Katy ISD Named “2019 Best
Communities for Music Education”
Seventeen out of 20 years, Katy Independent School District has received the “Best
Communities for Music Education” designation from the National Association of
Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music
education. The District has received this recognition for 15 consecutive years.
The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts
that demonstrate outstanding efforts by school communities in supporting
music education as part of the school district’s core curriculum. This year NAMM
Foundation recognized 623 school districts and 98 individual schools. To qualify
for the Best Communities designation, Katy ISD answered detailed questions
about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction
time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making
programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The
Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

D-Day, the Battle of Normandy
(75th Anniversary)
The Battle of Normandy was fought during World War II in the summer of
1944, between the Allied nations and German forces occupying Western
Europe. More than 60 years later, the Normandy Invasion or D-Day,
remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving nearly three
million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy
in occupied France.
Twelve Allied nations provided fighting units that participated in the
invasion, including Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, Czechoslovakia,
Greece, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the United
Kingdom and the United States.
Operation Overload was codename for the Allied invasion of northwest
Europe. The assault phase or the establishment of a secure foothold,
was known as Operation Neptune. Operation Neptune began on D-Day
(June 6, 1944) and ended on June 30 th , when the Allies had established a
firm foothold in Normandy. Operation Overlord also began on D-Day and
continued until Allied forces crossed the River Seine on August 19, 1944.
The battle began months before the invasion, when Allied bombers
began to pound the Normandy coast and farther south, to destroy
transportation links and disrupt the German army’s build-up of their
military strength. More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over
Normandy in advance of the invasion. Six parachute regiments, with
more than 13,000 men, also went ahead to cut railroad lines, blow up
bridges and seize landing fields. Gliders also brought in men, light
artillery, jeeps and small tanks.
There has been some confusion regarding the meaning of the “D” in
D-Day. The most likely explanation is offered by the U.S. Army in their
published manuals. The Army began to use the codes “H-hour” and
“D-Day” during World War I, to indicate the time or date of an operation’s
beginning. So the “D” may simply refer to the “day” of invasion.
With the invasion of Normandy, General Dwight D. Eisenhower faced a
task of magnitude and hazards never before attempted. He would have
to move his forces 100 miles across the English Channel and storm a
heavily fortified coastline. His enemy was the weapon-and-tank-superior
German army commanded by Erwin Rommel, one of the most brilliant
generals of the war. Less than 15 percent of the Allied forces coming
aboard the ships had ever seen combat.

An invading army had not crossed the unpredictable and dangerous
English Channel since 1688. Once the massive Allied force set out, there
was no turning back. The Allies boasted a 5,000-vessel armada that
stretched as far as the eye could see, transporting both men and vehicles
across the channel to the French beaches. In addition, the Allies had
4,000 smaller landing craft and more than 11,000 aircraft.
By nightfall on June 6, 1944 more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead
or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it ashore and secured
French coastal villages. Within weeks, supplies were being unloaded at
Utah and Omaha beachheads at the rate of more than 20,000 tons per
day. By June 11 th , more than 326,000 troops, 55,000 vehicles and 105,000
tons of supplies had been landed on the beaches. By June 30, 1944 the
Allies had established a firm foothold in Normandy. Allied forces crossed
the River Seine on August 19, 1944.
Military intelligence was an important part of the Normandy invasion.
British and American cryptographers working in London deciphered
coded messages that the German believed to be unbreakable. Messages
could quite often be delivered to Eisenhower within two and a half hours
of the time the Germans had sent it. In addition, reconnaissance teams
took infrared pictures of Omaha Beach while avoiding German patrols.
There is no official casualty figure for D-Day. It is estimated that more
than 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went
missing during the battle. That figure includes more than 209,000
Allied casualties. In addition to roughly 200,000 German troops killed or
wounded, the Allies also captured 200,000 soldiers. Captured Germans
were sent to American prisoner-of-war camps at the rate of 30,000 per
month, from D-Day until Christmas 1944. Between 15,000 and 20,000
French civilians were killed during the battle.
In the end, the invasion of Normandy succeeded in its objective by sheer
force of numbers. By July 1944, some one million Allied troops, mostly
American, British and Canadian, were entrenched in Normandy. During
the great invasion, the Allies assembled nearly three million men and
stored 16 million tons of arms, munitions and supplies in Britain.
The occupation of Normandy was crucial for the Western Allies to bring
the war to the western border of Germany. If the Normandy invasion had
not occurred, there could conceivably have been a complete possession

THE ARC OF KATY’S SUMMER DAY PROGRAM!
THE TIME TO ENROLL IS NOW!
The Arc of Katy is currently taking applications for three Summer Program
sessions for teens and adults with intellectual and development disabilities
who are at least 16 years of age and meet the program’s minimum requirements.
The Day Program will be held Monday through Friday, weekly, from 8 AM-3 PM
at The Arc of Katy, 5819 Tenth Street, Suite C, Katy, Texas 77493.
Three Sessions are being held this Summer:
Session 1… June 3-June 28, 2019
Session 2… July 1-July 26, 2019
Session 3… July 29-August 16, 2019
Each session will include a variety of fun activities including excursions,
crafts, life skills, games and much more. Cost is $35 per day and participant
must be a current member of The Arc of Katy to participate. Participants will
bring a snack and lunch most days and receive an Arc of Katy t-shirt. For more

LIVING WORD’S CAMP JAM
Registration is open for Camp Jam, Living Word’s music & arts immersion
program. The camp will run the week of June 17-21, 2019 for youth ages
5-10. Hours are from 9 AM until 2:30 PM at Living Word’s church facilities
at 3700 S. Mason Road, Katy. Camp Jam focuses on immersing young
children in music, dance and art and to inspire them to continue in music
as they grow. The classes are taught by both music professionals and
talented laypersons from Living Word. Each child will have the opportunity
to experience seven classes lasting 30 minutes per day, including drum
ensemble, piano class, recorders, guitar/ukulele, art, dance and theater.
The children will enjoy a mid-morning snack and should bring their
own lunch. Camp starts and ends with singing and scriptural themes.
Registration for the week is $75 and includes a snack. Please register at

Peanut Butter Fudge
You could make this on National Fudge Day June 16th!
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow creme
1 (16 ounce) jar peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
DIRECTIONS:
Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, brown sugar,
butter and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil
for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in marshmallow creme until well
incorporated and melted. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth;
spread in prepared pan. Let cool before cutting into squares.

Oven Roasted Asparagus
INGREDIENTS:
1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place the asparagus
into a mixing bowl and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss to coat the spears,
then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. Arrange the
asparagus onto a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the preheated
oven until just tender, 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness. Sprinkle
with lemon juice just before serving.

Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with
oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
