Summers in the air!!! Isn’t it??
It’s June guys!! Summer is around the corner!! Yay!!! Hope everyone had
a great Mother’s Day and an awesome Memorial Day, long weekend!
What do you guys do in the summer? Go away, plan fun activities for the
kids, summer camps?!! I seriously don’t know where time went. I thought
I had enough time to be beach body ready lol!!
Father’s Day is around the corner! How do you guys spend it! We normally
go for lunch or dinner with my husband and father in law and accordingly
go fishing or something “fun” as per my hubby since it’s a day to celebrate
him!! I always get stuck on a present for Fathers Day! I try and make a
hand made one from my daughter and then something like a toy/gadget
for my hubby who loves anything he can spend time on lol!!
Summer to me means BBQing, pool days, beach days and just enjoying
as much as I can of the outdoors, although yes it does tend to get way
to hot to be outdoors right in the middle of the day but luckily Summer
means longer days - more time to do things, evening walks to the park or
walks around the block!! A lot of Off spray as the bugs are everywhere!!
This summer season I want to do a lot with my family. I want to go to Galveston
- maybe stay the weekend at Moody Garden or San Luis, go to Typhoon Texas
always wanted to go but didn’t ever get a chance with a new baby, I want to
go boating maybe in lake Charles, a staycation in a resort - I’ve heard a lot
about The Woodlands Resort I have yet to try. They are a resort not too far
from us and they seem to have a whole bunch of fun things for the family.
Spa, golf, Lazy river, slides, splash pads for the little ones what more can one
ask for. Can’t wait to go there this summer and explore their property. I love
La Torretta in Lake Conroe. It has a similar concept as The Woodland Resort,
it’s fun for all ages!!! Why go far when fun is just at your fingertips :)
Hope you guys have a great start to the summer!! Happy Fathers Day to
those who are celebrating. Chat with you guys next month!!!! ~ Farah A
Stay Safe!
Although we enjoy a very safe neighborhood, outsiders may occasionally
come through looking for trouble. Please be aware of your surroundings.
Always carry your cell phone. If something looks strange or makes your
feel uncomfortable, please call or text a family member or neighbor and
let them know something isn’t right. If you see an unfamiliar car parked
in front of a house or cruising the streets, don’t ignore it. Call the nonemergency
number or the roving police at 832-719-1047. The number for
the Ft. Bend Sheriff can be reached at 281-341-4665. It is always better to
be safe than sorry. Our police are here to keep our community safe and
they need our help to notify them when something is wrong.
Speed Limit -
Please Slow Down!
Speed limit signs are posted throughout the
community and should be obeyed at all times.
We regularly have many children and families
out on our streets enjoying the good weather.
Please be alert for pets, children, walkers,
joggers and bicycles on our streets. Be sure to
come to a full stop and look both ways before
proceeding through intersections. Joggers and
small children can move extremely fast and
can be in front of you with no warning.
LAKEMONT SCHOOLS
Lakemont is in the Lamar CISD. Our children attend McNeill Elementary,
Briscoe Junior High and Foster Senior High School. The website for
Lamar CISD is www.lcisd.org. The website is easy to follow and lists all
pertinent information you will need for your children.
PETS
We love our pets at Lakemont, but please be sure to keep them leashed.
Some dogs are nervous or skittish when approached by other dogs.
Children are often frightened of dogs that are not leashed. Even if you
have the friendliest dog in Lakemont, please keep them on a leash when
you’re out in common areas.
Please be sure to clean up after your dogs. Excrement is unsightly and a
health hazard.
Dogs should have shelter and plenty of water when they are outside.
Never leave your pet in a car. It takes only a few minutes for a pet to die
from heat stroke. Always remember, if it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely
too hot for your pets.
KEEP LAKEMONT BEAUTIFUL
Our residents take pride in keeping our neighborhoods beautiful. Please
do your part by cutting your grass every week during the summer. Trees
that are close to sidewalks should be trimmed approximately 8 feet
from the ground so that people walking down the sidewalks will not be
impeded by the branches. Likewise, trees with branches extending over
D-Day, the Battle of Normandy
(75th Anniversary)
The Battle of Normandy was fought during World War II in the summer of
1944, between the Allied nations and German forces occupying Western
Europe. More than 60 years later, the Normandy Invasion or D-Day,
remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving nearly three
million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy
in occupied France.
Twelve Allied nations provided fighting units that participated in the
invasion, including Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, Czechoslovakia,
Greece, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the United
Kingdom and the United States.
Operation Overload was codename for the Allied invasion of northwest
Europe. The assault phase or the establishment of a secure foothold,
was known as Operation Neptune. Operation Neptune began on D-Day
(June 6, 1944) and ended on June 30 th , when the Allies had established a
firm foothold in Normandy. Operation Overlord also began on D-Day and
continued until Allied forces crossed the River Seine on August 19, 1944.
The battle began months before the invasion, when Allied bombers
began to pound the Normandy coast and farther south, to destroy
transportation links and disrupt the German army’s build-up of their
military strength. More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over
Normandy in advance of the invasion. Six parachute regiments, with
more than 13,000 men, also went ahead to cut railroad lines, blow up
bridges and seize landing fields. Gliders also brought in men, light
artillery, jeeps and small tanks.
There has been some confusion regarding the meaning of the “D” in
D-Day. The most likely explanation is offered by the U.S. Army in their
published manuals. The Army began to use the codes “H-hour” and
“D-Day” during World War I, to indicate the time or date of an operation’s
beginning. So the “D” may simply refer to the “day” of invasion.
With the invasion of Normandy, General Dwight D. Eisenhower faced a
task of magnitude and hazards never before attempted. He would have
to move his forces 100 miles across the English Channel and storm a
heavily fortified coastline. His enemy was the weapon-and-tank-superior
German army commanded by Erwin Rommel, one of the most brilliant
generals of the war. Less than 15 percent of the Allied forces coming
aboard the ships had ever seen combat.
June 2019 | Lakemont

An invading army had not crossed the unpredictable and dangerous
English Channel since 1688. Once the massive Allied force set out, there
was no turning back. The Allies boasted a 5,000-vessel armada that
stretched as far as the eye could see, transporting both men and vehicles
across the channel to the French beaches. In addition, the Allies had
4,000 smaller landing craft and more than 11,000 aircraft.
By nightfall on June 6, 1944 more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead
or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it ashore and secured
French coastal villages. Within weeks, supplies were being unloaded at
Utah and Omaha beachheads at the rate of more than 20,000 tons per
day. By June 11 th , more than 326,000 troops, 55,000 vehicles and 105,000
tons of supplies had been landed on the beaches. By June 30, 1944 the
Allies had established a firm foothold in Normandy. Allied forces crossed
the River Seine on August 19, 1944.
Military intelligence was an important part of the Normandy invasion.
British and American cryptographers working in London deciphered
coded messages that the German believed to be unbreakable. Messages
could quite often be delivered to Eisenhower within two and a half hours
of the time the Germans had sent it. In addition, reconnaissance teams
took infrared pictures of Omaha Beach while avoiding German patrols.
There is no official casualty figure for D-Day. It is estimated that more
than 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went
missing during the battle. That figure includes more than 209,000
Allied casualties. In addition to roughly 200,000 German troops killed or
wounded, the Allies also captured 200,000 soldiers. Captured Germans
were sent to American prisoner-of-war camps at the rate of 30,000 per
month, from D-Day until Christmas 1944. Between 15,000 and 20,000
French civilians were killed during the battle.
In the end, the invasion of Normandy succeeded in its objective by sheer
force of numbers. By July 1944, some one million Allied troops, mostly
American, British and Canadian, were entrenched in Normandy. During
the great invasion, the Allies assembled nearly three million men and
stored 16 million tons of arms, munitions and supplies in Britain.
The occupation of Normandy was crucial for the Western Allies to bring
the war to the western border of Germany. If the Normandy invasion had
not occurred, there could conceivably have been a complete possession
of northern and western Europe by Soviet forces.
Quote regarding D-Day, the Battle of Normandy, by Dwight D. Eisenhower:
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are
about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven
these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and
prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. (Addressing
the men before the invasion of Normandy)
Recipes & Gardening Tips
Peanut Butter Fudge
You could make this on National Fudge Day June 16th!
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow creme
1 (16 ounce) jar peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Garden Tips For June
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
DIRECTIONS:
Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, brown sugar,
butter and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil
for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in marshmallow creme until well
incorporated and melted. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth;
spread in prepared pan. Let cool before cutting into squares.
Oven Roasted Asparagus
INGREDIENTS:
1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place the asparagus
into a mixing bowl and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss to coat the spears,
then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. Arrange the
asparagus onto a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the preheated
oven until just tender, 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness. Sprinkle
with lemon juice just before serving.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the
rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant
sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with
oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of
material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve
water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the
drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation
water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly,
a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
