After months of intense and playful heat, summer is coming to an end. Surprisingly, 

it seems that rainy season comes early this year. Nonetheless, there are still some of 

us going to beaches, flaunting their tan lines and shoulder’s sunburns. 

It's the 5th month of the year. I hope that everyone of us has already fulfilled some 

of their 2019 goals. Days do seem to go by faster than normal—or maybe just the 

psychological time. Well, it is true that time flies so fast when we are having fun. 

However, it also occurs when our attention is totally engaged in various endeavors— 

and it is really beneficial. We are not in a state of boredom, that’s why. 

It is nice to see people being busy and showing dedication to achieve their goals— 

that is really empowering. Balancing work and personal life might be hard so I adore 

people who can do both with excellence and consistency. Just always remember 

that the key to make yourself happy is finding a balance between staying busy and 

taking time to reinvigorate and recharge.

PALAUI ISLAND IS 

CAGAYAN'S UNDERRATED GEM

n island so promising yet maintains its natural 

beauty. Correct, I am talking about God's gift to 

nature, Palaui Island. 

Heritage of Palaui 

Derived from the word Palami dated way back from 

the Spanish era, the Island of Palaui exudes nothing 

but peace and harmony. The haven is located at 

the northeastern most part of Cagayan Valley, in 

the municipality of Santa Ana, Cagayan province. 

Inaccessible to few, the treasure of the North really 

deserves a spot on your vacation list. 

CNN even declared as rank 10 from World’s 100 Best 

Beaches together with Puka Beach, Boracay (#84) 

and El Nido, Palawan (#14). 

Protected Land and 

Seascape 

The main selling point of this paradise is not its 

crystal clear seas and marvelous caves. It is the 

luxury of experiencing how majestic this place is in 

its almost-untouched form. Palaui Island prides its 

preserved resources unlike other famous beaches 

and attractions Philippines is known for. Thanks 

to the locals and tourists who have come to a 

consensus to protect the Island at all cost. 

This is where sustainable development come in 

handy. The Island boosts local tourism to the 

community that's why it needs mandatory 

protection. While the involvement of tourists also 

plays a big part to the sustenance of the Island's 

beauty. After all, it takes two to tango, right? 

Modes of Transportation 

There are tons of ways on how to get to this paradise. 

Airplane rides are available but if you'll travel by land, 

you need 12 (or more) hours from Manila to Palaui 

Island, Cagayan. Take a bus ride going to Tuguegarao 

City. From there, go ahead and ride a van to Sta. 

Ana, Cagayan. The van will land you to Sta. Ana 

Commercial center, one tricycle ride away from Sta. 

Vicente port. 

At San Vicente port, boat rides are available going to 

Palaui Island. If you're the adventurous type, you can 

trek your way to Cape Engaño lighthouse. But there's 

also a boat ride that transports you directly to the 

island that requires no trekking. 

Callao Cave 

For the first day of the trip, we visited the iconic and 

historical Callao Cave. As a matter of fact, the latest 

discovered human species Homo luzonensis is found 

in this cave. 

The cave has seven chambers with five natural 

skylights shared by our tour guide, Aljon Poquiz. 

The cave comprises of rock formations, stalactite, 

stalagmite, and limestone. 

The view inside is promising not to mention our 

ancestors who lived inside this cave.

Homestay with the 

Locals 

Unlike other beaches and islands, this protected 

natural jewel has no resorts and hotels in the vicinity. 

It is true that the more inaccessible a place is, the 

more it is preserved to its original condition. 

You'll surely enjoy the idea of sleeping in a neighbor 

of locals. An option of staying the night in bahay 

kubos is also available. 

Do not worry about ventilation because the cold 

breeze will keep you stay fresh and relaxed. 

Cape Engaño and 

Anguib Beach 

The second day of this adventure lands us to the 

union of history and nature. During daytime, we 

travelled the ancient Cape Engaño Lighthouse. From 

this point, you can see the Babuyan Islands and the 

Pacific Ocean. Clear your thoughts as you witness 

the beauty of clear skies, white sand beach, and calm 

waters. 

But when the sun already sets, it's time for the party 

at the Anguib Beach. Of course, we are keeping it 

clean for the sake of our mother nature. 

When the party's over, we now head on to our own 

designated tents. Come on, overnight by the beach! 

Crocodile Island 

This island is another note-worthy destination, 

though we just stopped here to take some photos. 

The rock formation of this island resembles to the 

shape of a crocodile. Worry not because there's no 

actual crocodiles lurking in this island. A perfect 

way to wrap-up your 3-day stay to the wonders of 

the North. 

In just 3 days, you can distress at the comfort of 

nature. Palaui Island is truly an underrated gem.

didn’t just stand like a live, calm, athletic Roman sculpture. He killed the hell of the photo shoot 

as if he was anticipating a battle in the arena of his own. He entered the picture of the breezy and 

eclectic house with his armor of conviction. Of course, he was a solid.

Jake wasn’t just prepared. He was damn ready. 

You might not have seen Jake bask like this 

before. This 31-year-old actor’s career appetite 

is unrivaled. With his six-pack gladiator abs and 

finely chiseled chest, Jake is more ripped and 

ready reinventing himself. Think of a star that is 

reborn with fire that is hard to be extinguished; 

think of the direct sun’s core that burns that flare 

because you just can’t help but feel that hot, 

inimitable aura shooting from the inside – feel 

that? That’s who Jake is. You’ll never know more, 

not until he opens his mouth to speak. 

“I try to change it, try to go against my instinct, 

doing the scenes differently from whatever I’ve 

done so far,” Jake says, with lively innocent eyes 

and a cool army-cut bravado. A scoop of his

and large white Balenciaga kicks —all that in

He is not just that one unstoppable actor 

we know as Isagani in Los Bastardos, with 

ratings rising in the showbiz. We also saw 

him in the films Eerie, and soap opera 

Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin. He’s an actor who 

loves to take acting seriously, and elevate 

it with the natural habit of transforming it 

into another kind of burning. 

It’s been seventeen years. Time has 

molded his persona to believe that he’s 

as an artist first before he is a celebrity. 

He’s taken quite a great time being ripe 

like this, but his fortress of achievements 

is grounded with his humility. With this, 

he has come prepared for his more 

challenging roles, he knows his thing, 

even braver, and nobody can ever stop 

him from being who he is. 

“That [being a celebrity] fades very 

quickly, I’ve learned that a loooong time 

ago,” he says. He guards his career by 

rejuvenating with the arts. “My career is 

all about challenges,” he says. The actor 

doesn’t do the same role twice. He dares 

himself in every medium, referring his 

trifecta of roles in television, film and just 

recently, theater.

We’ve been seeing him portray the protagonist role of Isagani Esperanza in ABS-CBN’s Los Bastardos. In the mainstream drama series, Isagani is a 

strong-willed good bachelor with golden personality and vividly carved abs, but of all this boldness, he stumbles his words on women. We ask, how 

come? 

Behind the shell of the alpha image that is Isagani is this artist called Jake and he did all that careful work defining the character, more than what’s 

found in the face of the script. “What I look for in Isagani speaks from what is not written,” the artist reveals. “For me, what I’ve found in the script, 

was…even though he [Isagani] is an alpha male, even though he is a hero, maybe he is not good on woman. So it’s something that’s not written and not 

told, but that’s what I found in the script.” That maybe, ladies and gents, is worth thousands of more audience. 

Now, the audience see Isagani move out fresh from the novelette, alive, open his eyes, face the sun, through the actor that is Jake. “So, what happens 

is that it’s interesting to act out kasi parang tuwing kausap n’ya ‘yung babaeng mahal nya, ginagawa ko s’yang torpe, or he stumbles on his words, or 

he doesn’t do the right thing. He tries to catch himself and that’s more interesting to act out.” 

Jake doesn’t spare the chance describing the set of Los Bastardos with his bright face and clear, accented voice: “Every day is something new,” 

he says, describing the scenes behind the drama series’ set. He says that it was a simply a happy set. The show is heavy soap opera drama, but in 

contrast, the casts are having so much fun hanging out. “Everyone’s excited to take everyday,” Jake says. 

“They’ve been very, very supportive. I try to guide them and teach them certain things. I’m the eldest.” He refers to the director, staff, and his co-actors 

like Joseph Marco, Marco Gumabao, Albie Casiño, and Joshua Colet, whom he guides in terms of acting, saying that they’re not just brothers in the 

series, but also behind the camera.

AN ARTIST MORE THAN A CELEBRITY 

More than his defined body, we say 

that Jake is a walking piece of art. He is 

dynamic and he is incredibly furious with 

it. He sees to it that his roles parallel with 

his physical body. His roles shape him. He 

was introduced in the 90s as a long-haired 

lad with a bad boy image. In fact, he loved 

that long tousled hairdo because it took 

time to grow and it had sentimental value 

to him, but his principle is 

that – before everything else, he’s an artist 

first. He cut his hair. 

In his horror film, Eerie, with the caliber 

of actresses like Bea Alonzo and Charo 

Santos and in the television series Ikaw 

Lang Iibigin with Kim Chiu, and Gerald 

Anderson, Jake needed to physically 

change to perform the role. “With all of 

the body transformations that I’ve done, 

from my last role which was the one with 

Eerie, and Ikaw Lang Iibigin, I had to be 

really thin,” he says. 

In Los Bastardos, it’s a lot more different. 

The role requires him to look bigger. “I 

have been training twice a day, I have so 

much energy. I still do triathlon, despite 

busy schedule, despite having to be big 

for the resistance training.” This time, he 

lifts heavy weights to be Isagani, spare 

the cardio for himself. He incorporates 

salmon and vegetarian in his diet to get 

bigger real quick. Imagine, he’s malleable 

like that. 

It will bring us back to 2011, when he 

braved upon portraying a homosexual role 

in Maala-ala Mo Kaya. The chiseled alpha 

took it as a challenge. “It was the most 

challenging [that time] because what I try 

to go for when I accept roles is to try not 

to make it stereotypical, not to make it 

type-casted, I look for that which is very 

challenging,” he says. 

This proves that Jake is willing to serve his 

audience the platter of change. He wants 

to show that masterpiece nobody will 

ever expect, because he changes a lot. 

The world noticed him more but he only 

noticed the truth. 

“When you really love something, when 

you’re really loyal and can get over any 

sort of obstacles, and I think you can 

say you’re a real man,” he adds. He 

explains that while we live in modern 

times time now he reckons that quirkyness 

is something to be supported, not 

disregarded and put aside. He thinks that 

it’s also about individuality, of a journey of 

being true to ourselves. “For me, parang 

more than the stereotypical thinking of 

what a real man looks like is just being 

yourself. It’s a happier life if you allow 

yourself to be free.“

THE CURTAIN COMES DOWN 

Jake Cuenca’s core is found in theater. He is an alumnus of The Lee Strassberg Theatre and Film Institute. This is the home of Hollywood actors and 

actresses like Alec Baldwin, Chris Evans, Uma Thurman, and Scarlett Johansson. In 2014, he won his first Best Actor Award from the International Film 

Festival Manhattan for the indie movie Awaken. Last year, his theatrical debut was the play called Lungs, directed by Andrei Pamintuan. “Theater really 

opens my eyes, because when it comes to theater, you can’t change things. You’re portraying literature, so you can’t change anything,” he says that 

with eager eyes like everything seems to have taken place just yesterday. “I just keep busy and keep myself falling in love with the craft.” 

Theater has undoubtedly morphed him as an artist, looking for something more. “[In theater,] you only have one goal. On stage, there’s no hiding, 

there’s no take two. There’s no changing the piece, because it’s literature. At the same time, you have the audience and it’s a different thing. There 

were these scenes from so many things. When doing it, I looked for something different,” he adds. He did one play as of this writing, but he knows that 

every time he performs on stage, all that he feels is that hint of renewal, which made him better. 

“I’m dying to perform [again] in the stage now. I’m already in the process of looking for my next play. Right now pa lang, I have such a busy schedule 

very hectic one, I’ll always make time for the stage. That’s something I will always do, even if I have to lose money because of it, because I love 

theater,” he adds.

HE IS FEARLESS 

Jake is a warrior, he had a fair share of 

struggles in his life; the bits of pieces of 

heartaches and pain, just like a normal human, 

but at the same time, he’s such an alchemist. 

He transforms this bleak, unforgiving pain 

to something golden, and takes it into his 

advantage, using it to be a better actor. “I try to 

really, really experience it. That’s how I’ve gone 

though everything,” he says. Look at him now. 

Just do it. You’ll see this star shine and look all 

of the respect that he gained. He knows what’s 

best for him, more than anything, respect, bro. 

When he gets that respect from his audience 

and fans, he keeps it. He believes that it means 

the world to him. “More than fame, I work for 

respect because respect lasts forever while 

fame is very temporary,” he says. 

Like a real Roman soldier, Jake is shielded 

with his solid acting artillery. He surprises us 

with his uncanny attacks in his own kind of 

masterpiece. He goes out there and explores 

the possibilities, but most importantly, he 

innovates his art by being brave. He’s an expert 

fighter and he never leaves his sight off the 

field. He’s always there—thinking of a new 

strategy on how to make us cry, how to make 

us angry, how to make us ecstatic. Whatever 

that is. He’s fearless, reckless to face this brave 

new world. n

ike most of us, Klea dreamt of seeing herself on television 

that later on transpired. Thanks to her journey on the hitreality 

TV show Starstruck that paved the way to where 

she is now. But for a girl like her, dreams are her constant drive, 

making her eager to do and achieve more. 

"Now, I’m doing my best to achieve my next big dreams — to 

get more challenging roles, star in my own movies, and win 

acting awards!" 

However, her aspirations don't stop there as she hopes to 

achieve greater heights and wider platform. After finishing 

Starstruck 6 as the Ultimate Female Survivor, her goal now is 

to focus on her craft. While doing so, Klea strives to follow the 

steps of her Queen, none other than Ms. Universe 2015 Pia 

Wurtzbach. Her dream of being a beauty queen never stopped 

burning especially when her idol named her as the Future 

Queen. 

Even before the praise, Klea already had a clear sight of a title 

and a crown. She remarked her interest in preparations like 

trainings and lessons regarding pageantry. 

"I know I have to be prepared physically, mentally and 

emotionally. I’m excited!" 

The list of Things Klea Can Do is not ending here. Do you know 

that she's also into car racing? Considered as a dream, Klea is 

already familiar with cars since her childhood. Thanks to her 

dad who is a fan of this sport. Now, her father fills with joy as 

his daughter gets to do what he loves the most. 

In a male dominated sport, it just shows that female are no less 

than a gender in this course. The rider in her shows that you can 

conquer whatever road you might encounter.

Born in the season of Pisces, Klea proved her gift in 

musicality. From time to time, she uploads short song 

covers that showcase her sultry voice. People born from 

February 19 to March 20 also show friendly trait—they 

often wind up in a group of diverse people. These 

people exhibit selflessness and are always willing to 

help others, without aiming for something in return. 

Klea may have won a show that correlates with stars 

but she firmly believes that we, every one of us, create 

our own destiny. No horoscope or luck can fulfil our 

desires and put everything in place.

As a young woman who manages to 

conquer one field at a time, Klea also 

believes that discipline is really the key.

hobbies same as hers. So it's always best 

to have an organized schedule and try to

Another thing, our ultimate survivor 

believes that these hobbies can empower 

her co-Filipinas as long as these make 

them happy. She reminded everybody 

that it is our responsibility to make 

ourselves better.

So far, Klea took the biggest step when she 

finally decided to enter the jungles of show 

business. As she put it into words, it isn't 

all the glitz and glamour as what it seems 

to be. It may not be a challenge to few but 

Klea is glad to survive from this. 

"Having the right discipline, 

professionalism and attitude are the most 

important things to possess to survive." 

Of course, in order to stay fit and have a 

body like Klea's, we all need to survive a 

strict diet and workout routines. She has 

an outgoing persona that fits her love for 

sports. Volleyball, basketball, swimming, 

name it, she's ready to play it with you.

The Starstruck survivor also confessed her celebrity crushes. Dingdong Dantes is the man that made her starstrucked the moment she 

met him in person. Klea has a very distinct taste in men—she likes men who are masculine yet look sweet at the same time. No doubt, she 

also have a crush on Ryan Gosling! 

Now going to the current hopefuls of the newest Starstruck installment, Klea has something to say. 

"Don’t give up. Always do your best in everything you do. Put your heart in it! And of course, pray! It’s your most powerful weapon!"
