Okowa’ll surpass his first term
achievements — OJO
By Festus Ahon
A m SABA—THE
e m b e r
representing Ukwuani
constituency in the Delta
State House of Assembly,
Dr Alphonsus Ojo has said
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa
will surpass his first term
achievements in his second
tenure.
Speaking with newsmen
during the swearing-in of
the governor, Wednesday at
the Asaba township
stadium, Ojo said; “Okowa
is a hardworking governor.
He came in as governor in
2015 when the country was
experiencing economic
recession yet he was able
to do a lot for us.
Activist urges DTHA to pass
Coastal Areas Devt Agency Bill
By Emma Amaize
Aa SABA—ACTIVIST
n d
environmentalist, Mr.
Sheriff Mulade, yesterday,
called on the Delta State
House of Assembly to
expedite passage of the
Coastal
Areas
Development Agency,
CADA Bill, will catalyze
development, boost
security and give a sense
of belonging to riverine
communities in the state.
Congratulating Governor
Ifeanyi Okowa and his
deputy, Kingsley Otuaro on
their swearing-in for a
second term in office,
Mulade, who is the chief
promoter of the bill, “The
riverine communities that
contribute 80 percent to the
state treasury lack social
basic amenities such as
electricity, portable
drinking water, good
healthcare, quality
education, good roads and
transportation.
“Creating the Coastal
Areas Development
Agency will promote peace,
Kemebigha said the state
stands to gain more if
modern approaches are
used to engage youths in
the sector as stakeholders
and marketers.
He said: “Rather than let
unemployed youths in the
state to continue to lament
in the midst of plenty, one
basic thing we would do is
to train and register them
with major oil and gas
marketers, so that they can
become independent
marketers.
“We will take the state back
to the days when people in
riverine areas enjoyed the
services of floating filling
stations and petroleum
products were easily
accessed at official pump
price. The ideas behind this
new framework is to also
tackle issues such crude oil
theft and illegal refining
that have plagued the
nation’s economy for long.''
“His projects are all over
the state. He touched all the
critical areas ranging from
roads, education, health,
agriculture, job creation
and human capital
development.
“Okowa was able to
manage the very lean
resources of the state to
build infrastructure.
Indeed, he showed his
commitment to the well
being of the state; he didn’t
hide his passion for the
development of the state.
“Okowa will do more in
his second tenure. He has
hit the ground running
already. He has turned the
state to a construction site.
Work is going on in virtually
every local government of
the state.''
bring development, employment
and reduce crime
in the riverine communities
“Creation of CADA will
help check security
problems, reduce conflicts
between International Oil
Companies and host
riverine communities, it will
also boost the security
situation and attract
investors to the coastal
areas, thereby bringing
development to them.''
the conduct of future
Delta State. He stressed
that politicians should not
take Nigerians for a ride as
they were voted into
various political offices on
account of their campaign
promises.
Lamenting the killings
and violence that
characterised the general
election in several parts of
the country, he said that the
Federal Government
should take urgent steps to
avert a repeat of the ugly
experience in future
stock in the eyes of the
whole world for too long
simply because elections
nationwide have remained
a big joke since
independence.”
CENTREP’s Executive
Director, Ogehenejabor
Ikimi in a statement
yesterday, said: “The
Second and Third
Republics general
elections nationwide were
a sham as same signalled
the beginning of vote
buying and other vices
inimical to credible, free
and fair election except for
the 1993 Presidential
election.
“We make bold to say that
since independence,
general elections
nationwide have been a big
joke. The Fourth Republic
which began in May 29,
1999 ushered in a new vice
of ballot snatching, ballot
stuffing and vote
allocations into our electoral
process amongst other
vices.
“The above no doubt
necessitated the then
incumbent President,
Umaru Yar Adua in the
year 2007 to set up the
Uwais Electoral Reform
Panel in a bid to reforming
our stunted and deformed
electoral process.
“Then came President
Goodluck Jonathan, who in
the year 2011 set up the
Sheikh Lemu Electoral
elections by initiating
electoral reforms that will
also introduce modern
technology in the electoral
process.
“It is time to move forward
as a nation. All the
negative reports that
followed the elections
should set us thinking on
how we can improve on the
current electoral process.
This would require electoral
reforms of the current
Electoral Act. We call on the
executive and the
legislature to begin reforms
on the Electoral Act early
enough so that all will be
set for the next general
election in year 2023. They
Reform Panel also in a bid
to reforming our nation’s
electoral process.
“The Sheikh Lemu Ianel
like the Uwais Panel
recommended a wide range
of electoral reforms.
However, neither did the
administration of the late
Yar Adua nor that of
President Jonathan have
the will power to implement
the above wide range of
useful reforms
recommended by both
panels.
“In the year 2015, came
Children’s Day.
should particularly think
along the line of
introducing modern
technology in the electoral
process that would ensure
free, fair and credible
elections,” he said.
Congratulating Governor
Ifeanyi Okowa on his reelection,
the Anglican
Church also commended
the governor for signing
into law “Delta State Public
and Private Properties bill
2018,” saying that it “Will
curb the incessant
harassment of developers ,
particularly by youths who
often times chase away
investors who are ready to
do business.”
Reform Panel set up by the
incumbent President
Buhari
which
recommended a wide range
of reforms as an addendum
to the ones recommended
by the Uwais and Lemu
panels but till date, no
white paper had been
published by the Federal
Government on the said
recommendations just like
the two previous
administrations owing
largely to glaring systemic
errors and lack of will power
to reform our electoral
process.
SPG Marine warns mischief makers
THE management of
SPG Marine Service
Nigeria Limited, an oil and
gas servicing firm operating
in Yenagoa, Port Harcourt,
Benin Republic, Ghana,
and Cameroon, has
declared war on people it
termed mischief makers
and those trying to smear
the image of the company.
A press statement by the
company's General
Manager, Mr. Bredino
Hilton Jacobs, in Yenagoa,
Bayelsa State yesterday
read in part: "Going
forward, we will be seeking
legal recourse and working
very closely with security
officials to address any
attempt by any
organisation, group of
persons, or individual to
tarnish the reputation
we've built for SPG Marine
Service over the years," he
said.
"SPG Marine Service
have been operating in the
maritime sector, within and
outside Nigeria, for
upwards of 3 years. We
meet our contractual
obligations to our clients
and always try to give back
to communities we operate
from through our Corporate
Social Responsibility
initiatives, one of which is
SPG Football Club."
"It is however surprising
and quite disappointing that
despite all these, some
group of persons, for
reasons best known to
them, will make attempts at
sullying the reputation of
SPG Marine Service. We
will be tough on all such
persons or group of people,"
he said.
