CONSUMER RIGHTS:
Be aware of your
responsibilities
In our last publication on
Consumer Rights,
Homemakers were
informed about their rights as
consumers and major players
in the home when it comes to
the health of the family. We
did mention that the
consumer rights are fully
backed by laws as provided
for in the Consumer Protection
Council Act, under Chapter
C25, Laws of the Federation
of Nigeria 2004 and that the
act provides for the
establishment of the
Consumer Protection Council
(CPC) and empowers it to
protect these rights for every
Nigerian – no matter your
social background. For
instance, you have a right to
Beware and be
alert to the quality
and safety of
products and
services before
you purchase
be protected, right to be
heard, right to be informed,
right to be assured and the
right to seek redress. All
these rights may seem just on
paper and not working, if as
consumers, you don’t play
your part in ensuring you
make a report when there is
violation of your consumer
rights.
YOUR
RESPONSIBILITIES
According to information
available to Homemakers,
after products are
purchased, consumers
should follow every safety
guideline before and during
use. If any product defects
come to light, the consumer
should share concerns with
the proper parties including
the business in question
and other consumers to
protect other consumers
from similar harm in the
future. If they believe they
have personally been
harmed by a product or
wronged by a corporation,
these consumers can take
the proper steps to seek
compensation, which in
turn will force that
corporation to update its
practices.
Wondering, it doesn’t
happen like that in Nigeria,
there is an available
information that will no
longer be the usual,
because a court has been
assigned to Consumer
Protection Agency
especially in Lagos State to
prosecute offenders of fake
products with sentence
terms. So, be aware by
gathering all the information
and facts available about a
product or service, as well as,
keep abreast of changes and
innovations in the market.
Beware and be alert to the
quality and safety of products
and services before
you purchase. Think
independently by
making decisions
about wellconsidered
needs
and wants.
Also, speak out,
be an ethical
consumer which
means you must be
fair and never
engage in
d i s h o n e s t
practices which
affect other
consumers
negatively.
I n f o r m
businesses and
appropriate
regulatory
authorities about
y o u r
dissatisfaction
with a product or
service, in a fair
and honest
manner and
share experience by
informing other consumers
about your experiences with
a product or service.
Lastly, avoid waste,
littering and contributing to
pollution. Promote
sustainable consumption by
ensuring that what you
consume does not impact on
the environment negatively.
