Muirkirk News May 2019
EAST AYRSHIRE CAR CLUB
Following the success of last year’s Kames Classic Car Show at Muirkirk, East
Ayrshire Car Club report plans are well advanced for their 2019 gathering on Sunday
June 9th. Last year the Club attracted a number of outstanding exhibits and their
efforts were appreciated by the large number of spectators who attended from all
over the West of Scotland and beyond.
Typical of the quality of vehicles on display last year was a Ford GT40 and next
month it is hoped that high standard will be maintained. However the show is not
only for exotic machines and the Club are keen to encourage proud owners of more
modest machines to put them in front of other enthusiasts, as long as they are of an
acceptable standard of presentation and are interesting or unusual. To make this
more attractive to Classic car owners, there will be no entry fee but entries must be
lodged with the Club by the official closing date of May 25 th after which the
Club may in special circumstances consider late entries but these will not be judged.
Entries can be made online at
https://www.rallies.info/webentry/2018/eacc/classiccarshow/webentry.bhp
where details of the various classes are shown.
Kames Sprints May 11 th & 12 th 2019
Louise Calder may have missed the two sprints at Kames in April due to family
commitments but she certainly made her mark on both May rounds of the 2019
Guyson Scottish Sprint Championship at the Muirkirk track. The driving starlet from
Thurso took over three seconds off the field on Saturday in her 1040cc Jedi racing
car but had her superiority reduced to 0.49 of a second on Sunday’s competition
when the anticlockwise course was used.
Yet again the experts were confounded at the maturity, speed and finesse of the
youngster as she slid through the tight Kames corners as though they didn’t exist, a
performance which drew applause from the gallery.
Runner-up on Saturday was Lindsay Robertson from Kirriemuir in his Radical racing
car, a mere 0.09 of a second faster than the Westfield sports car of Bill Lambie from
Caithness.
The driver mounting the top challenge on Sunday was Charlie Fraser from Portlethan
in his Spire GT3 racing car who pushed Aberdeen doctor Paul Rhodes in an OMS
Hornet singleseater into third spot.
Martin Palmer in an MG ZR competed in April and returned to the fray at the
weekend, promising to return in late July. He moved from England many years ago
and now lives in Stornoway.
The best contest came in the Mazda MX5 class where the first ten places were
covered by a blanket of just two seconds – on both days! Ross Glen from
Dumbarton won on the opening day but he had to set a new MX5 record to do so
and had to settle for third.
