• During our history, our club has always supported a
nursing home. Currently, members volunteer at Grace
Care Cypress on Huffmeister.
• Garden Club members volunteer in the garden
therapy greenhouses at The Brookwood Community
in Brookshire several times a year. Our club has been
recognized for our involvement and donations to
Brookwood.
The garden club invites you to join us as we kick off our
2019-2020 year at our Annual Ice Cream Social and Plant
Exchange on Tuesday, August 20 th , at 6:30 PM at the
country club. We would love to have you join our group.
Hearthstone Yard Of The Month
Eyewitness News Flash!! April showers does bring May flowers!! 14815 Silver Sands,
the home of Tara and Ryan Haire, is a conceptual cornicopia of color, a creative collage
of Caladiums, Coleus and Chrysanthemums-enough alliteration already! The Haires’
front yard tapestry also features a generous array of Geraniums, Petunias, Hydrangeas,
Agapanthas, Zinnias. Garzanias, Impatiens and red and pink Roses.
Hearthstone Garden Club
ALL ABOUT HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB!
• The Hearthstone Garden Club was founded in 1978. We are now in our 41 st year.
• We meet the third Tuesday* of the month (August through May) at 6:30 PM in the Main
Dining Room of the country club. All interested residents and non-resident friends are
invited to join us for a social time, a garden-related program and our business meeting.
(*November meeting is often moved up one week and the December meeting is usually
held in a member home.)
• Our garden club is a member of the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs, Texas Garden
Clubs (District IV) and National Garden Clubs (South Central Region). Our club has
received awards and recognition at each of these levels in the past for our newsletters,
yearbooks, scrapbooks, flower show schedules, community involvement, monetary
donations and Arbor Day celebrations.
NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION
• Our garden club has planted nearly every tree along Huffmeister Road and nearly two
dozen at Hearthstone Park. In our early years, garden club members spent every penny
on trees and watered these trees manually with buckets of water and garden hoses.
The club plants a tree each year in celebration of Arbor Day.
• The garden club does not plant any of the seasonal bedding plants in the common
areas or make any recommendations to the landscape company that does. We do,
however, maintain a Friendship Garden at Hearthstone Park, where we do plant
bedding plants. (This flowerbed is currently under major renovation.)
• The garden club holds an annual Plant Sale the first or second Saturday morning of
November at Hearthstone Park. We publicize this event and offer residents an opportunity
to pre-order top-quality bedding plants in the exact colors and quantities desired for
their yards. We offer delivery to residents who are out of town on the sale date.
• In the early 90’s, the garden club sponsored an “Adopt a Cul-de-Sac” program where
club members and interested residents could prune, water, plant flowers and more in
a cul-de-sac island. This program ended shortly after its inception when the landscape
firm chosen by the HOA took over maintenance of the cul-de-sacs.
• The garden club provided the funds for the construction of the bulletin board at
Hearthstone Park, but members do not personally post on this board. Announcements
are sent to the subdivision management company for posting.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
• Since 1998, our garden club has awarded over $90,000 in college scholarships to 83
Texas students pursuing a degree in a horticulture-related major.
• Garden Club members support Cypress Assistance Ministries with an annual food
drive and winter coat drive. We also support CAM at holiday time with baking baskets
and gift cards for teens.
Stop That Barking
Many dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and
restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond
noisily to any and all activity. But, nothing is as
annoying as incessant barking - even for dog lovers. If
your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some
of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down
in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Always the first recommendation for any
behavioral problem! Help is as close as the Yellow
Pages. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be
surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get
some insight into why your dog barks so much or what
it is trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock,
anti-barking collar and costs about the same.
Available on the web and in pet stores.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an
outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate can cut
down on the disturbance to neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help
muffle street noise or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need
companionship - a cat, bird or another dog. Consider
a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your
pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once
or twice a week.
Keep in mind that dogs who bark from loneliness
or boredom, may not do it when you are home.
Meanwhile, your neighbors may be getting serenaded
while you are away.
REMINDER: Please be mindful of the Harris County
Leash Law and be certain that your pets are on a leash
when not confined to your home or backyard.
Hearthstone Streetlights
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like
you see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light
poles along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Includes 5-6 individual office spaces,
kitchen, supply room, reception area, storage closet, bathrooms.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the
pole number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number
facing the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or
staying on during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage
(Google streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it
for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to
Inframark at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report
it, so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
Trash Days
Trash days are Tuesdays and Fridays with recycling pickup on Fridays. If
you have questions, call 281-368-8397.
Board Meeting
Board Meetings are now bi-monthly, usually on the 3 rd Wednesday at 7:00
PM. Hearthstone Country Club.
Lost & Found Pets In Hearthstone
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with
their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each
dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have
machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help
found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
Website
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use
design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news,
quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association
forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added,
please let us know.mThe only thing that has not changed is the address.
It is still at www.hearthstonehoa.org.
Hearthstone HOA Email Alerts
Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening
page. You will be automatically added to the email group. This group
will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members
between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more
than one email address, just register again with each address you want
included in the group. The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used
for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not
even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will
be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors.
If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so
again.
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do
not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is
anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any
vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your
street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at
home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police
catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that
you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be
home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them
out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age,
they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is
there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later).
Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never
open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything
from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into
your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain
sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your
cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first
contacts).
Planning Wisely - Conserving Water
Water is a limited resource everywhere. Though the eastern half of the United
States typically receives enough (or sometimes too much) there are dry areas
that sometimes do not receive enough rain for the demand. Most low-elevation
areas of the western United States have low rainfall rates and a long dry season
and though the overall western water supply remains virtually fixed, ever more
people are putting demands on it. Thus, conserving water is (or should be) a
concern everywhere. Here are a few tips for waterwise gardening.
LOCATE PLANTS CAREFULLY: Group plants with similar water needs
together. They can then be irrigated together and no plant will receive too
much or too little water. This concept is called hydro zoning. To cut water
use on plants that need regular moisture, site the “thirsty” individuals in
a spot shielded from drying summer winds.
MULCH YOUR PLANTINGS: An organic mulch spread several inches thick
over the soil acts as an insulating blanket, slowing evaporation from the
soil and keeping it cooler than it would be if unprotected. Rocks and
gravel also do the job. Black plastic sheeting, sold in rolls, conserves
moisture and suppresses weeds. You can also buy rolls of various plastic
materials known collectively as landscape fabrics. Permeable to water
and air, these are manufactured expressly for use as a mulch.
ELIMINATE RUNOFF: Don’t waste water by irrigating paved surfaces. If
your sprinkler system showers water over sidewalks, patios or driveways,
replace the heads with a model that delivers water where it is needed. Or
redesign the system.
Sloping land and heavy clay soils invite runoff - due to gravity in the first
case, due to slow water penetration in the second. To solve the problem,
adjust the rate at which water is applied. If you use sprinklers, you can
improve penetration by watering in several successive short intervals,
allowing time for water to soak in between each spell of sprinkling.
Terraces and basins can also help prevent runoff on slopes.
Teenage Job Seekers
If you are between 12 and 18 and would like to be added to the
teenage job seeker’s list, please fill out the form on our website (www.
krenekprinting.com, click submissions and choose Jobseekers) with
your name, birthdate (mo. & yr.), phone number, year you will graduate
and the name of your newsletter/subdivision. Check the list of jobs you
want on your form. Please make sure your email is correct, we send
emails in the summer to make sure all the info is still good and that you
want to stay on the list. If we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we
will remove you from the list until we do. Must have parent(s) permission.
DISCLAIMER: Neither the subdivision, nor Krenek Printing is responsible
for those listed on the Teenage Job Seeker List. Please ask for and check
out references if you do not personally know those listed. This is just a
list of teenagers from the subdivision who wish to find part time jobs.
Responsibility for any work done by these teenagers is between those
seeking helpers and the teens and their parents.
Primary campuses were set up inside the arena, secondary campuses
were located in the conference center and departments were split
between the arena and atrium. Attendees formed lines near each table,
with each then spending a few minutes with campus administrators or
departments, distributing resumes and possibly setting up follow-up
interaction.
“The 2019 Career Fair was a huge success,” said Chairita Franklin,
assistant superintendent for human resources. “The Career Fair was well
attended by teacher and paraprofessional applicants who are interested
in starting their professional journeys or transferring to our district. Many
had one-on-one opportunities with our campus administrators through
previously scheduled interviews or the meet-and-greet format. We are
excited that once again, over 1,000 applicants are considering CFISD
and we look forward to sourcing those applicants to find the best and
brightest for our students.”
featured three reviewing officials: retired CFISD Educator Carolyn Spillane,
portion of what these cadets can do and what they show,” Campbell said.
“In order to put something like this together, it takes times and dedication
from the students. And it helps show that we’re not just about push-ups.
Cypress Springs High School AFJROTC Unit TX-20016 served as the host
school for the Pass in Review. The school’s unit is led by Lt. Col. Charles
Solé Ibarra served as the commander of troops.
St. John XXIII Student
Earns Perfect Score on
National Latin Exam
St. John XXIII College Preparatory Principal, Mr. Tim Gallic, is pleased
to announce freshman Cate Silas earned a perfect score on the recent
National Latin Exam. The National Latin Exam is a third-party organization
designed to assess competency in each Latin Level. Individual awards
are dependent upon the student’s performance in relation to the
performance from all the test submissions for that particular level across
the nation.
Last month, all St. John XXIII Latin students took the National Latin
Exam. Of the 33 students who sat for the exam, 18 received awards, with
nine students receiving the highest award of Gold Medal and one of these
was a perfect score attributed to Silas.
The philosophy of the National Latin Exam (NEL) is predicated on
providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of
personal accomplishment and success in his study of the Latin language
and culture. This opportunity exists for each individual student since, on
the National Latin Exam, he is not competing with his fellow student on a
comparative basis but is evaluated solely on his own performance on the
exam. The basic purposes of the NLE are to promote the study of Latin
and to encourage the individual student. For more information, please
visit the National Latin Exam website, nle.org.
Inaugural Art Car Parade Entry
St. John XXIII College Preparatory is pleased to announce the inaugural
entry of a decorated car in the annual Houston Art Car Parade.
Collaborative Art Students and student volunteers, under the direction
of Art Department Chair, Lynsey Hepburn, have created The Treasure of
Smaug! This amazing art car masterpiece made its grand appearance in
the 32 nd Houston Art Car Parade! The Treasure of Smaug, entry #53, is the
dragon, Smaug from the Hobbit Saga, guarding his treasure. Students
from the Collaborative Art Class brainstormed and pitched various ideas,
proposals and designs before deciding on this ambitious design.
The Houston Art Car Parade is the world’s largest parade of its kind.
From inception, artists, participants and visitors have come from places
far and wide each year to delight in seeing the nearly 250 cars that are
uniquely decorated, constructed and illuminated “drivable” works
of art. The art car experience is one of collaboration and a social and
communal event; communities join together to help build the cars and
offer encouragement. The Orange Show organizes the beloved parade,
as well as other unique art installations in the Houston area.
It was a beautiful day that kicked off with warm-up exercises and
then given their challenge rotations for the day and they were off to
compete against each other in the five challenges set up on the green
space and beach outside the Lakehouse at Towne Lake. The participants
then enjoyed lunch from the Backyard Grill and Boar’d to Death food
trucks while the scores were calculated for the teams and the winners
determined. Awards were presented to the first, second and third place
Recipes & Gardening Tips
Peanut Butter Fudge
You could make this on National Fudge Day June 16th!
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow creme
1 (16 ounce) jar peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, brown sugar,
butter and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil
for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in marshmallow creme until well
incorporated and melted. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth;
spread in prepared pan. Let cool before cutting into squares.
Oven Roasted Asparagus
INGREDIENTS:
1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Garden Tips For June
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place the asparagus
into a mixing bowl and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss to coat the spears,
then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. Arrange the
asparagus onto a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the preheated
oven until just tender, 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness. Sprinkle
with lemon juice just before serving.
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the
rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant
sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with
oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of
material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve
water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the
drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation
water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly,
a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
