Recipes & Gardening Tips
Peanut Butter Fudge
You could make this on National Fudge Day June 16th!
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow creme
1 (16 ounce) jar peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Garden Tips For June
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
DIRECTIONS:
Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, brown sugar,
butter and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil
for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in marshmallow creme until well
incorporated and melted. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth;
spread in prepared pan. Let cool before cutting into squares.
Oven Roasted Asparagus
INGREDIENTS:
1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place the asparagus
into a mixing bowl and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss to coat the spears,
then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. Arrange the
asparagus onto a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the preheated
oven until just tender, 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness. Sprinkle
with lemon juice just before serving.
http://allrecipes.com/
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the
rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant
sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with
oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of
material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve
water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the
drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation
water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly,
a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
Neighborly Reminder
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be
great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great
for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also
important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your
yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find
that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and
clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!
Home Improvement – ACC Application
The Architectural Control Committee would like to remind you that
approval is needed before you begin an exterior project or change to your
home. This includes exterior painting, new roofs, fences, pools, basketball
goals, etc. With your completed ACC form, please note what is needed for
your type of improvement such as, photos, paint samples, solar screen
samples, drawings, brochure, lot survey and your signature. If these
items are not submitted with your application, your request is denied and
returned to you for completion. Please read the application carefully.
• A lot survey is an architectural drawing of your property showing your
home, easements and building lines. A copy usually comes with your
closing papers. • Please show on the survey in a distinguishable color,
other than black ink, the location of your project. • Faxed pictures come
across as a solid black picture, so please mail or email pictures. Faxed
pictures cannot be used.
You will be notified by letter after the ACC committee has made a decision.
They have at least 30 days to review and respond to your application.
You will find an ACC form at www.crest-management.com or you may
contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 for more details.
CFISD LEADERS VISIT PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES
AT ‘MEET AND GREET’ CAREER FAIR
CFISD administrators and leaders from its 91 campuses and numerous
departments visited with approximately 1,300 prospective employees at
the 2019 ‘Meet and Greet’ Career Fair, held April 24 th at the Berry Center.
The fair offers district administrators opportunities to interact with
prospective teachers and employees. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the thirdlargest
district in Texas and 23 rd largest in the nation, making it one of the
largest employers in northwest Harris County.
Primary campuses were set up inside the arena, secondary campuses
were located in the conference center and departments were split
between the arena and atrium. Attendees formed lines near each table,
with each then spending a few minutes with campus administrators or
departments, distributing resumes and possibly setting up follow-up
interaction.
“The 2019 Career Fair was a huge success,” said Chairita Franklin,
assistant superintendent for human resources. “The Career Fair was well
attended by teacher and paraprofessional applicants who are interested
in starting their professional journeys or transferring to our district. Many
had one-on-one opportunities with our campus administrators through
previously scheduled interviews or the meet-and-greet format. We are
excited that once again, over 1,000 applicants are considering CFISD
and we look forward to sourcing those applicants to find the best and
brightest for our students.”
Cypress Woods Continues Early Voting Effort For Students
Cypress Woods High School seniors continued what has quickly become a tradition at the campus, joining together in an organized effort to exercise
their right to vote and doing so for the CFISD Bond Election. Transported by bus on April 23 rd to nearby Juergen’s Hall, 107 seniors made the trip during
their government or economics classes during early voting. The trip was organized by government teacher Leah Stephanow, who also put together
similar voting events for Cypress Woods students voting for the first time during elections in 2016 and 2018.
Students are given the option to participate, so groups varied from roughly 15 students in one class period to more than 30 during another. A passionate
advocate for civic participation, Stephanow wanted a way to encourage student participation in American democracy and government at local and
national levels.
Others schools have also provided similar opportunities for seniors, with many voting for the first time. Voting field trips were organized at Cypress Woods
and Langham Creek high schools in 2016 before the general election. Two years later, Cypress Falls and Cypress Woods seniors participated in voting trips
prior to the midterm elections. Stephanow helped lead teaching the election process and the importance of voting in government and economics classes.
There are some logistical issues, the biggest simply being students returning parent permission slips to actually take the trip. But Stephanow and
her fellow teachers are already looking ahead to elections down the road, including the Texas constitutional amendment and presidential primary
elections. Excerpt of article by Daphne Tett, Cypress Woods HS
Cy-Woods Student
Wins At Texas Science
And Engineering Fair
Cypress Woods High School junior Govind Chada earned a firstplace
award at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair in the
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics category, which
follows a first place at the district level and second at the regional
level for a project showcasing his research on novel methods
for early detection of lung cancer using machine learning.
More than 1,200 students across the state participated in the
fair, which was held March 29 th -30 th at Texas A&M University in
College Station. The judging was done by experts in the fields of
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Chada’s project, titled “Using 3D Convolutional Neural
Networks for Classification of Lung Nodules and Early Detection of Lung Cancer,” comes from research that led to him developing a machine learning
model that detects lung nodules with state-of-the-art accuracy. In addition, Chada applied a novel visualization technique that allows radiologists to
see how the algorithm is making its decisions, thereby increasing their trust in the model.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my teachers and administration for the encouragement and support I received in pursuit of my
extracurricular activities,” Chada said. “I have been very fortunate to have great teachers who spend countless hours after school and weekends
creating strong STEM and leadership programs and inspiring us to be the best we can.”
As a winner, Chada was awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy summer camp, to be held in July
at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The weeklong STEM academy helps students explore practical applications and provide exposure to career options.
