Wednesday 6 June, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 13 Parramatta News and Views Celebrate indigenous culture at the good to see you festival THE City of Parramatta will host a number of community events over the coming months as part of a unique Indigenous event program alled Warami, a Darug word meaning “good to see you”. Events include National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, Burramatta NAIDOC, NRL Indigenous Round matches and will run until September. “For more than 60,000 years the Burramattagal people have called Parramatta home, so it’s wonderful to have an event program that recognises and celebrates our Indigenous community and their strong ongoing connection to the region,” City of Parramatta Lord MayorAndrew Wilson said. “Warami also provides an opportunity for the wider community to come together to learn about and experience the rich culture and traditions of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.” The program kicked off when the Parramatta Eels played the Penrith Panthers as part of the NRL’s Indigenous Round at Bankwest Stadium May and featured a Darug Welcome Ceremony, led by Darug community leaders Peta Strachan and Jie Pittman, and a performance featuring traditional dancers and musicians. Last month’s National Sorry Day was held at Old Government House in Parramatta Park to acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and featured as Smoking and Welcome Ceremonies, storytelling, and music and dance performances. The council will now host heritage walks to interactive installations and a market. Burramatta NAIDOC returns to Parramatta Park on Sunday July 14 from 11am to 6pm. This year’s event, which is themed “Voice, Treaty, Truth Let’s Work Together For A Shared Future” and will consist of traditional and contemporary music and dance performances, market stalls and workshops among other offerings. Telopea Park residents will get a park say CITY of Parramatta Council has invited local residents to have their say about plans to renew and upgrade Sturt and Acacia parks in Telopea. The Council is working closely with various community stakeholders and is seeking input from residents to ensure the upgraded parks will meet their needs. “Council wants to know what residents do and don’t like about the parks, as well as what features and functionality they would like to see in these parks in the future,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson said. “Not only will this information help shape a park that responds to the aspirations of park users, but it will also help to future-proof recreational facilities and ensure these green spaces remain a vital part of the community as Telopea undergoes urban renewal.” The proposed improvements for community consideration include upgraded safety features and lighting; playground equipment replacements; new pathways, benches and tables; and upgrades to the skate-park, courts, and amenities building in Sturt Park. The refurbishments will be delivered under the Sturt and Acacia Parks Improvement Project, which is funded by the State Government. “Quality recreation and green spaces are essential for community wellbeing. Council hopes that by receiving feedback and insights from park users and residents, Sturt and Acacia parks will be well used, safe spaces that can be fully utilised by people of all ages and abilities,” Lord Mayor Wilson said. Interested parties are encouraged to have their say on Sturt and/or Acacia parks through Council’s online engagement portal or by attending community drop-in sessions.
