From Our President
Mary Peloquin
It amazes me to hear “The Coral
Ridge Association never does anything!”
When I moved here in 1990, I heard
stories of how Jack Kaye, then President
of the Coral Ridge Association,
stopped Bayview Drive from becoming
a four-lane road. Can you imagine?
Bayview Drive would have been the
new Federal Highway. In 2008 or
2009 a developer wanted to build a
twelve-story condo where Chick-Fil-A
now operates on Federal Highway.
Thanks to the Coral Ridge Board at the
time it was not approved and the backyard
privacy for all the homes east of
there was preserved. In the late 1970s
plans for NE 19th Street to cross over
to Coral Ridge at 21 st Street and Middle
River Drive were stopped again by
members of the Coral Ridge Association.
If you look across the Middle River at
21 st Street you can still see where that
road was to be constructed. Had that
happened few of us would be living
here today.
Board Members of the Coral Ridge
Association have met and worked with
Fort Lauderdale’s Transportation and
Mobility Department to improve our
most heavily used roads, Bayview
Drive and NE 26 th Street. There are
traffic calming plans which include
speed tables, a traffic circle at 26 th and
Bayview, additional cross walks on
Bayview, sidewalks on the east side of
Bayview, sidewalks on the north side
of 26 th Street from Bayview Drive to
Federal Highway and a traffic circle at
Bayview Drive and Middle River
Drive. The Bayview Elementary
school flashing lights are being moved
to proper locations on both Bayview
Drive and Middle River Drive. The
Coral Ridge Association is responsible
for the solar speed sign installations on
Bayview Drive that tell you how fast
you are going, the repaving of Bayview
Drive, the restriping of Bayview
Drive and the wider more visible bike
lanes with large green bicycle decals.
Additionally, the Coral Ridge Association
through an NCIP grant narrowed the
intersection of 13 th
Street and Bayview Dr.
Through another NCIP
grant seven decorative
street signs were purchased
and installed along Bayview
Drive.
The metal traffic boxes at intersections
in the neighborhood are in line to be
wrapped with tropical green foliage
artwork. You may notice oval green
signs at the entrances to Coral Ridge
with business or individuals’ names on
them. These are sponsors for Coral
Ridge and their sponsorship pays for
the upkeep of our entrances and other
projects (we pay for this not the city).
The Holiday Party last year had a
record-breaking crowd. A petting zoo,
pony rides, rock climbing wall, major
inflatable slide, free hotdogs and what
seemed like a thousand bags of popcorn
cooked and served by board
members were enjoyed by many families.
Recently, we had an Easter Egg Hunt
in Jack and Harriet Kaye Park which
was fantastic thanks Coral Ridge
Association Members Inge and Otto
Grossman, their family and several
board members.
Our Neighborhood Watch is working
with our elected leaders and police in
regards to the large homeless population
issue in the Federal Highway and 26 th
Street area.
This summer the Coral Ridge
Association will be looking for at least
seven new Board Members, maybe
more. No worries if you have never
served on a neighborhood board.
What we need is your help and your
talent! We need new people who care
about Coral Ridge. To be nominated
for the Coral Ridge Association Board
you need to be a paid member of the
Coral Ridge Association by June 30,
2019. Dues may be paid online at:
coralridgeassociation.org.
Feel free to contact us via the website
if you want further information in
regards to the Coral Ridge Association
Board or any of the committees. Do
not be afraid to ask any questions – we
like questions.
On page 17 are the committees
currently in place.
