IPSWICH – This summer you have 

the delightful chance to help Daniel 

Webster, the illustrious attorney and 

government leader, solve the murder in 

1830 of ship Captain Joseph White. 

The interactive play, Goodnight 

Captain White, is being staged on six 

Saturday nights by History Alive, Inc., 

the Ipswich Museum and the Ipswich 

ReCreation & Culture department. 

Described as a maritime historymystery 

by Mark Stevick, the play 

tells the tale of the murder of Captain 

White, an 82-year-old sea captain, 

who was a highly successful privateer 

during the Revolutionary War. 

The childless widower and former 

slave trader, who once bragged that he 

had “no reluctance in selling any part 

of the human race,” had a propensity 

for creating enemies, including some 

of Salem’s most prominent citizens. 

The play, directed by Lynda 

Robinson, takes place during the 

retirement party for White’s ship, the 

Caroline. His invitation lures a host of 

enemies and ill-wishers and creates an 

opportunity to murder the rich, old 

captain. 

At a beginning of 

the Revolutionary 

War, White was a loyal 

British subject until the 

Brits seized one of his 

ships. He replaced the 

lost ship with one he 

renamed the Revenge, 

which tells a lot about 

his personality, and 

became Salem’s first 

privateer. 

For the play, the 

audience of about 50 is 

greeted as they arrive at 

the Ipswich Museum’s 

Heard House by the 

actors playing the party 

guests and murder suspects. After the 

audience members enjoys punch, 

appetizers and desserts, they are led 

into the Appleton Room, where it 

is discovered that White has been 

murdered in his bed. 

Who did the dastardly deed? It’s up 

to the audience to figure out whodunnit 

and how. 

Many of the party guests detested 

White or were plotting to inherit his 

fortune. 

Was it his business partner, Joseph 

Knapp Sr., who had owned ships with 

White? 

Was it another business partner, 

the congressman and leading citizen 

Richard Crowninshield, Sr? 

Or was it Knapp’s son, Joseph Knapp, 

Jr., who married White’s grandniece, 

Mrs. Beckford, White’s housekeeper. 

Mrs. Beckford’s daughter married 

White’s grandnephew, Joseph Knapp, 

Jr., and lived in Wenham. Knapp had 

learned that White in his will was 

giving $15,000 to his housekeeper. 

But the young man believed that if 

White, his great uncle, died without a

the 75th anniversary 

of D-Day, one of 

history’s most pivotal 

moments in modern 

history, the nation 

celebrates its 242- 

year-old flag. 

Here on the North 

Shore, it has become a 

tradition to honor the 

flag by participating

will be on Saturday, June 15, starting 

and ending at Cashman Park on the 

Merrimack River, 202 Merrimac St. 

Created in honor of 1st Lieutenant 

Derek Hines, the race raises money to 

support the Hines Soldiers Assistance

Secretary of State, was engaged 

as the detective to ferret out the 

murderer. In the real murder 

mystery, Webster, a renowned 

defense attorney, served as 

the prosecutor. The famous 

man’s portrait, walking stick 

and desk are prominently 

displayed today in the Ipswich 

Museum. 

Played by Carl Shultz, 

Webster engages the audience 

as a “Committee of Vigilance.” 

This committee will decide 

who murdered White in 

what Webster would describe 

as “a cool, calculating, 

moneymaking murder.” 

That means each performance 

may end differently with the 

audience pointing the finger 

at a different suspect. This

Amesbury Day originally began in 1899 as a day set apart for local factories to celebrate 

their employees. Main Street Congregational Church, 145 Main Street, Amesbury, is excited to

As I sat down with a buyer 

who had bought and sold a few 

homes in the last dozen years or 

so to fill out a purchase contract, 

I realized again why REALTORS® 

are a valuable resource. Going 

through this process is something 

I have done hundreds of times and 

unlike my buyers who have done it 

only a few times, I am intimately 

familiar with the terminology 

and procedures to put an offer 

together. 

The real estate contract is 

the most often used, yet least 

understood part of the real estate 

transaction. Trying to explain it 

to the first time home buyer or 

the veteran of many real estate 

purchases can be a difficult process. 

You, Mr./Mrs./Ms. buyer or seller 

need to know what you are getting 

into as there is no excuse for not 

knowing and understanding the 

real estate contract. Keep in mind 

that if you are unsure or confused 

with any part of the process even 

when sitting with your REALTOR® 

you are within your rights to seek 

advice from an attorney. 

There are different forms used by 

REALTORS® in Massachusetts but 

most contain similar wording and 

ask similar questions. The offer is 

usually signed by the buyer(s). The 

contract is not binding until the 

seller accepts, creating a “meeting 

of the minds”. The seller must sign 

the contract for it to be accepted. 

A seller can do one of 3 things 

with an offer…reject it, counter it 

or accept it. If the seller accepts 

all the terms written by the 

buyer then it is off to the home 

inspection (assuming that clause is 

written into the offer). If the seller 

says something like, “we agree to 

the price but want to close on the 

“28th of April” then the original 

offer is null and void and a counter 

offer is in place. Until you hear 

back from the buyer in writing 

the seller can accept additional 

offers so make sure everything gets 

signed and/or initialed. 

Parts of a Real Estate Offer 

1. Purchase Price and 

Deposits: This section asks what 

you plan to offer for the property 

and what you will be putting down 

for deposits. ANY offer is required 

by law to have “consideration”. 

This “consideration” is usually in 

the form of $. Therefore when 

writing up an offer it is customary 

for the buyer to write out a check 

$1,000 to go into the escrow 

account of the Listing agent. 

There is also another deposit put 

into escrow when you sign the 

Purchase and Sale agreement. 

2. Purchase and Sale 

Agreement: This legally binding 

form is typically signed 10-14 

days after the offer to purchase 

is accepted and after your home 

inspection period ends. When you

on your closing cost amount. 

3. Contingencies: Do you 

have a property to sell before you 

can purchase this one? Does the 

property have a septic system and 

has it passed the Title V inspection? 

Do you want the seller to remove 

the swing set in the backyard or 

open up the pool for the summer? 

Do you need financing and if so 

when can your bank commit to 

approving your loan? 

4. Financing: Do you need 

financing? How much are you 

going to finance and when will 

you commit to getting financing? 

If you need a mortgage to 

purchase the home you will need 

to have a pre approval letter from 

a bank or mortgage company. 

The mortgage agent should also 

be able to tell you when they 

can give you a full go ahead 

or approval on the mortgage. 

Financial institutions typically 

need to send an appraiser to the 

property to determine its worth; 

this takes some time to coordinate. 

Lastly, get a preapproval, not 

just a prequalification letter. A 

preapproval letter is viewed more 

positively by a seller as usually 

shows them that you have been 

more completely screened by your 

bank or mortgage company. 

5. Dates: When can you 

close on the property? Check with 

your mortgage company on this 

as well. How much time should 

we give the sellers to review our 

offer? The least amount of time 

is ideal for a buyer as nobody else 

will be able to swoop in and get 

the property. However, if you 

make it too short the seller will 

feel rushed and may be hesitant 

to work with you. 24-48 hours 

is usually enough time. “Time is 

of the essence” is used in many 

real estate contracts means which 

means simply that if any of the 

dates are not met the contract will 

become null and void. 

6. Signatures: A contract 

must be signed to be enforceable. 

A faxed signature is usually 

acceptable, so long as the contract 

states that faxed signatures are 

valid. 

7. Legality: If you are unsure 

on any aspect of the process get in 

touch with a real estate attorney. 

There are two other things 

that I think deserve mentioning. 

Get copies of all documents you 

have signed and anything that 

is signed subsequently by the 

seller. Secondly, if you come to 

an agreement with the seller and 

dates you have agreed to previously 

(Purchase and Sale, Commitment 

for Financing, Closing, etc.) 

need to be changed make sure 

extensions are in writing. You can 

not assume that anything is agreed 

upon unless it is signed by both 

buyer and seller. 

Typically it is wise to choose 

someone to represent you who 

has a good track record for 

representing buyers and sellers in 

the town you are buying or selling 

in. Have the REALTOR® show 

you what they have done in sales 

in your area. There is no reason 

why they can’t show you on paper 

their sales volume and where their 

sales took place. Also, if you can, 

get references from someone who 

was, or is, in a similar situation as 

you (first time homebuyer, new to 

the area, selling a home first, etc).

The key to a child’s good dental 

health begins before his or her 

teeth become visible. Here are 

some answers to some of the 

most frequently asked dental 

health questions relating to 

pregnancy, infants, toddlers 

and children. 

1. Does being pregnant 

affect my oral health? Yes... 

hormonal changes exaggerate 

the way gum tissues react to the 

irritants in plaque. Thorough 

brushing and flossing of your 

teeth twice daily to remove the 

plaque and eating a balanced 

diet will help to keep your 

gums healthy. 

2. Should I visit my dentist 

during my pregnancy? Yes... 

you should continue regular 

dental visits. However, it is very 

important to let your dentist 

know that you are pregnant. 

You may be asked to be seen 

more frequently. 

3. Are x-rays safe during 

pregnancy? Yes... x-rays are 

safe during pregnancy and are 

a vital tool used in helping to 

detect dental and other oral 

health problems. Only the 

x-rays that are necessary for 

treatment will be taken. You

will be asked to wear a lead 

apron for extra protection. 

4. When will my infant 

begin to get teeth? Tooth 

eruption varies from infant to 

infant. However, most infants 

will start to get teeth around 

six to 12 months of age. 

5. When should I begin 

to brush my infant’s teeth? 

Starting at birth, clean your 

infant’s gums with a soft infant 

toothbrush, cotton gauze, or 

cloth and cool water. For infants 

under two years of age, parents 

should consult their child’s 

dentist before introducing a 

fluoride toothpaste. 

6. How much fluoridated 

toothpaste should I use when 

brushing my child’s teeth? 

Beginning at 2 years of age, a 

pea-sized amount of fluoridated 

toothpaste should be used 

during brushing. Children 

should be encouraged to spit, 

not swallow, toothpaste, and 

the amount of toothpaste used 

can be increased after five or 

six years of age when the child 

can reliably do this. 

7. When should I take 

my baby in for his/her first 

dental visit? This varies among 

practitioners. Consult your 

family dentist. In the meantime, 

look into the child’s mouth on 

a regular basis to make sure you 

don’t see anything unusual. 

8. How can I prevent my 

infant from getting early 

decay, know as early childhood

1,400 participants over age 60 and 

followed up with them two years 

later. 

Email, social media, instant 

messaging and not using online 

communication all had the same 

result: They didn’t do anything to 

fight depression. The clear winner 

was Skype, an online program that 

puts people together face to face with 

video chat. Being face to face with 

people we know is much better than 

just reading a page of comments on 

social media or receiving a photo in 

an email. 

Using Skype on your computer

decay? When placing your 

infant down to sleep (nap or 

nighttime), place only water 

in the bottle. Sugary liquids 

like formula, breast milk, juice 

and soda can pool around the 

infant’s teeth and cause decay. 

Don’t forget to clean or brush 

your infant’s gums/teeth twice 

daily to remove food and 

plaque. 

9. What else can I do to 

keep my child’s teeth healthy? 

Children are not born with 

the bacteria that cause decay. 

They are exposed to these 

bacteria from their caregivers, 

especially their mothers. By 

keeping your teeth healthy and 

free from decay, you can help 

reduce your child’s exposure to 

these bacteria and reduce the 

chances of early decay. 

10. What can I do to help 

my baby through teething? 

Many babies like a teething 

ring, cool spoon, or cold wet 

washcloth. Some parents/care 

providers rub their infant’s 

gums with a clean finger.

Video Chat Is Best for Mental Health 

For any number of reasons, many 

seniors are socially isolated. Whether 

it’s an illness that keeps us at home, 

living in a rural area or having no 

one living with us, some of us just 

don’t have as much social interaction 

as we need. Feeling alone can, 

unfortunately, lead to depression and 

increase the risk of dementia. 

Oregon Health & Science 

University conducted a study to 

determine which of four methods 

of online communication worked 

is easy. Search online for how to use 

Skype and follow the instructions. 

(For a treasure trove of how-to videos, 

go to YouTube.com and look at the 

offerings from Techboomers.) Look 

around at Skype.com. You’ll get a 

Skype number, which gives you a free 

trial month of calls. Later, if you call 

someone who is also on Skype, the 

call is free. Otherwise you pay a small 

fee for calls to their cellphone. 

You’ll also need a webcam and a 

headset or microphone. Be ready 

to create a Skype user name and 

password. Remember to choose 

Private so you won’t show up online 

to everyone, including scammers. 

When in doubt, ask the senior center 

to hold a class on using Skype.
