There are 3 different species of shrimp that you may encounter in the Lowcountry near shore waters. Brown and white shrimp are the most common. Pink shrimp are present, but more prevalent in the Gulf of Mexico. “Oh, but Capt. Amber…We only eat the pink shrimp!” I immediately knew that she meant boiled shrimp…they are all pink when they are boiled. And they all taste the same as well. It is difficult to distinguish the species unless you see them on a regular basis. The White shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus), are lighter overall than the other two and the tail is black at the base with light yellow and green trim along the edges. Brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) have a red and/or dark green tail and occasionally, it may be light blue. Pink shrimp (Litopenaeus duorarum) have a light purple/ blue tail and a dark red spot on the side of the abdomen. There are also ways to distinguish brown and pink shrimp by observing groves on the head and lower abdomen. White shrimp do not have grooves, but have the longest antennae and horn. I am not ambitious enough to teach you to distinguish the species. To be honest, I think I would struggle as well. Focusing on white shrimp and brown shrimp, there are more similarities than differences, particularly in their life cycles. They spawn in the ocean, but white shrimp spawn in the Spring and early summer, depending on the water temperature. Brown shrimp spawn in October and November. One female shrimp will produce up to one million eggs. The eggs are fertilized by a package of sperm that is given to the female like a gift (from the male shrimp of course), the spermatophore. When she ejects her eggs, they are fertilized as they pass by the spermataphore. They sink to the ocean floor and hatch within 24 hours! These larval shrimp are microscopic and float in the water column. Two weeks later, they start to look like miniature shrimp. Since brown shrimp spawn later in the year, the larva will stay offshore and bed down on the ocean floor until the water temperature starts to rise in March when they retreat into the tidal estuaries with the white shrimp. White shrimp spawn in the spring and ride the tidal currents into the estuary almost immediately. Only about 2% of the larval shrimp will become adults. The others are food for many juveniles in the nursery of the ocean. Brown and white shrimp do better in our area because they prefer a muddy bottom. Shrimp are bottom feeding scavengers. They eat plant and animal material. 15
