IMPACT OF ADVANCED
TECHNOLOGY
IN EDUCATION
Advancement in science and technology has
affected every aspect of our lives. Right from
newspapers (e-news) to business to social
relations it has shown its presence everywhere globally.
Technology has captured almost every field, may it be
our day to day life, education, social life or even
traditions and beliefs apart from mainstream fields like
engineering, medicine, administration law and
management. The presence of advanced technology in
the education has transformed the way we teach and
learn to a great extent. With the help of technology ,
transfer of knowledge and information has become easy
convenient and effective. Internet is a huge source of
knowledge and information in every field and is a store
house of the same. With high speed internet anyone can
access any type of information on a click of a button.
ICT is a form of technology widely used in the
dissipation of knowledge and successful implementation
of this with various teaching aids has led to a positive
impact on education. It has led to the promotion of active
learning including learner engagement in contrast to
memorization based or rote learning. These tools help a
great deal in the circulation and analysis of information
obtained by examining students’ performance and helps
percolate the same to the students and their parents. It
has eased distant learning making class room learning
and old fashioned concept.Distant learning has helped
students learn at their own pace any time of the day at
any place. Creative learning through ICT haspromoted
creation of new knowledge resources helping students to
come up with novel concepts based on earlier research.
Integrative learning approach has led to eliminating
separation between theory and practicals. Students can
learn through examples or demonstrations shown to them
in the classroom with aid of visual tools. Digital
cameras, projectors, training softwares, power point
presentations, 3D tools, models help grasp concepts
easily. Since learning is process which involves three
major organs, eyes, ears and the brain, visual
explanations through audiovisuals have made learning
joyful improving the imaginative power of learners.
Technology has led to globalization helping students of
different states and countries meet their counterparts
through video conferencing without leaving classrooms.
Online seminars and webinars allow learners and learned
come on a common platform to exchange knowledge.
Distant learning has been a boon for many online courses
offered by foreign universities wherein students enroll
online and peruse course with relocating thus
overcoming geographical limitations.In Pharmacy
education, databases, simulatory models, analytical and
statistical softwares have accelerated research many
folds. Online data management and patient reports have
facilitate doctors and pharmacists from distant places to
discuss issues and put forward opinions for betterment of
patients.Reporting ADR’s and checking of drug safety
information data has become effortless due to various
interfaces available online in the form of apps and
websites. Technology has not only helped us grow in the
technical field but also in the field of administration
through enterprise resource planning (ERP) .Handling
and managing student information, collecting fees and
filing exam forms has become effective, error free and
simple due to advent of technology. Applying for
scholarships, concessions and stipends has now become
online and paperless omitting middlemen and corruption.
As every coin has two sides, technology also has affected
negatively on productivity of human beings to a major
extent. Writing skills of students have affected to a great
extent making them dependent on digital communication
and forgetting writing skills. With newer softwares and
hacking tools incidences of cheating and frauds have
increased many folds. Technology is money driven and
cost of technology is high. In the field of education,
dependence of students over technology is seen greatly,
affecting their imaginative power. Students rely more on
internet for ideas and incidences of copying ideas is
more than getting inspired from ideas. Footfall in the
libraries has got affected as students seem to prefer
internet over actual referencing. Health issues related to
eyes, obesity and emotional dependence is increasing in
younger generation. However, counting the benefits of
technology, rewards of technology are far greater than
shortcomings, thus making technology a valuable tool in
the field of education. T R
cleared and known jump onto the next levels.
CROSSWORD
Crossword puzzles are one of most favorite among students as
it's a good way of learning new words and meanings. It is a
cognitive exercise which involves thinking and is a test of one’s
memory to know the words of their own dictionary and also an
excellent way of learning synonyms of respected words. As
the overall game goes, it teaches the formation of
consecutive words dependent on each other, the sequence
of placing the words up, down, across, is a process of
analyzing what word is suitable in a respective block.
JIGSAW PUZZLE
Jigsaw Puzzle are played and enjoyed among all age groups
and is an apt game, which can be played out of boredom.
Pictures, colors, shapes, and sizes are excellent aspects for
engaging short-term memory to assemble and bringing forth
visual picture. The more the number of pieces, the stuffer the
game gets, and it involves looking through various bits and
pieces to form the potential picture. This teaches the students
about the different shapes and sizes and also the color
scheme while getting the pictures together, often shapes can
help ll the next part or a particular color maybe in present in
THE IMPORTANCE
OF SUSTAINABLE
The world is getting populated day by day & it’s
getting richer at an even faster rate. This rich world
is transforming luxuries of the past into necessities
of the present. How many car(s) or AC(s) were there in the
1980s in our society? A few, right?
IN ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
consumption to cool down the buildings. These energy
consumptions can be reduced by a very large extent if we
tackle with the construction of buildings properly. There are
a number of methods which can deal with the heat loss
through the houses.
32
The increasing number of cars or ACs is not the problem;
the problem is with the amount of energy they are
consuming. The difference between potential demand & the
available supply of energy resources is rising rapidly.
A standard house loses heat through a variety of routes.
A large amount of energy is wasted in heating the house.
Non-renewable resources, i.e. fossil fuels are in limited
amount & as a responsible citizen, we all should take care
of energy consumption. Although there is another
non-renewable resource, nuclear energy, and a variety of
renewable resources are obtainable, the technologies
available have not been able to make them easily accessible
& cheap.
In colder regions, a large amount of energy is used to heat
the buildings and in hotter regions, there is similar
Loft insulation is a technique which means adding an
insulation layer in the rooftops. This method can prevent a
lot of energy loss. Some homes are built with a cavity
between the inside and outside walls. If this gap is filled
with an insulating material, heat will pass through far more
slowly than if this space was filled with air. Since the
reduction of window size is not a suitable option, energy
use can be reduced by double glazing the window. This
technique uses two panes of glass with a gap in the middle
to act as an insulator. The gap needs to be filled with a clear
material (unlike cavity wall insulation). This sealed gap is
sometimes filled with an inert gas such as argon, or might
simply be filled with air. The fact that the gap is sealed will
improve the insulation properties of the window. Further
savings could be made using triple glazing (three panes of
glass), but it can be too expensive for the amount of energy
being saved.
Another possible design feature is to make the roofs of
homes covered up with solar panels which will supply the
required energy. But there is a problem with the usage of
solar energy; it is not a reliable source of energy as it is a
climate & weather dependent source of energy.
There are mechanisms to procure energy from waste.
People should be educated & encouraged to use such
techniques. We should always turn off the electrical devices
when not in use. The devices should not even be on the
standby mode as they consume some energy even on that
mode. Four or five devices left on standby in a household is
equivalent of leaving an electric light on permanently. We
should also focus on using energy-efficient devices.
It is possible to build houses that need no energy & many
such houses have been built mainly in Germany &
Australia.
The design features often include:
• High levels of insulation.
• Airtight construction.
• High insulation windows (using reflective glass).
• Solar panels to produce electricity and to heat water
pipes.
• A ground heat exchanger to capture heat from lower
levels in the ground.
• Use of heat exchanger to capture excessive heat
produced by the occupants.
but you know what it can be destroyed. So, we must know
how to save it.
Not only energy resources but water is equally important to
us & our environment. We may have a lot of water on the
Earth but water which is really useful is just 0.3% of the
entire available water. Rainwater harvesting, reuse of used
water should be encouraged.
Above mentioned all the procedures are only possible, if we
educate the masses or maybe introduce these methods in the
courses that students study. If the world comes together the
energy consumption can surely be reduced. T R
Organic wastes & domestic wastes can be used to produce
methane gas by using bacteria. Methane gas is a great
source of energy & it can not only be used to generate
electricity but also can be used to cook food. The
composted waste can then be used on land to improve soil
structure. It’s been well said that energy cannot be created
XAVIER INSTITUTE
OF ENGINEERING
NURTURING YOUNG MINDS
WITH HOLISTIC OFFERINGS
Inspiring students by our motto, “to attain the joy of excellence in the world of high technology”-
always remembering that service to one's neighbour is a greater service to one’s own self.
Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE), Mumbai is
a Jesuit Institute and it began in the early 1930s on
the premises of St Xavier’s College, Fort, Mumbai.
However, additional space was required and that was found
in Mahim, where it stands today. To provide quality
education in IT, Computers, and Electronics in 2005 a
degree-level college, XIE, was set up. The institute is
accredited by NAAC (National Assessment and
Accreditation Council).
XIE offers degree level courses in Computers, Information
Technology, and Electronics and Telecommunication
Engineering. XIE not only focusses on training the mind
and gaining bookish knowledge, but begins with the
premise that encountering reality in the world is less a
threat and more of an opportunity to realize a person’s true
potential. The institute’s programmes offer students a
holistic formation and benefits from the one-on-one chats
with their mentors.
The laboratories have state-of-the-art equipment and
excellent library, entrepreneurial-cells, an Incubation
Centre, and spacious classroom. It also invites outside
professionals to conduct special courses on latest
technology in Computers and Electronics. XIE being a
Jesuit Institute is driven by 4 Cs: Conscience, Commitment,
Compassion, and Competence.
The Revolutionary Stride
Running successfully over the decades, the institute has a
number of factors which has made it a prominent brand
today. Its dedicated faculty, on-going improvement of
facilities and equipment, tie-ups with other similar institutes
in the country and abroad, introducing new courses and
projects to update the learning process and reading the signs
of the time for placement opportunities are the core
strengths of the institute. One of the momentous
achievements was the setting up of the “Gait Lab,” which
has been sponsored by Marquette University, Milwaukee,
USA. The lab uses state-of-the-art computer technology to
capture a 3-D image of a person’s walk. St Xavier’s Gait
Lab has been recognized by the Government of
Maharashtra and the Government hospitals are sending
children to seek its help as it is the only lab in Mumbai.
Quick problem-solving ability is something that is essential
to excel in all aspects of life especially in the professional
world because it can help you get promoted faster and paid
more. Fortunately, through practice, this skill can be
polished to make you an asset for your organization.
There are four major steps in solving a problem and the
faster you apply these steps, the better you get. These
crucial steps of problem-solving include-
1. Identifying the problem-
For a problem to be solved, it is important to identify
the problem and it’s magnitude. Once, you are clear
about what really the problem is, you can go further
to solve it. This process requires you to sit and map
which areas are in trouble and need a solution.
2. Look for the causes-
The next step to avoid the problem to expand is to
identify its causes. Identifying the cause helps you to
analyze what has created the problem in order to
prevent it in the future. Once this is done, the next
steps become clear.
3. Analyzing possible solutions-
One problem can have many possible solutions, but
the key is to find the quickest and the easiest solution
which will help you save time and effort. Each
possible solution needs to be thought of carefully in
order to get the ideal solution.
4. Implementing the best solution-
After analyzing and selecting the best possible
solution, create a plan to implement the solution.
Test and review the solution to make sure that you
have made the right choice.
These are the tools of good problem-solving ability. The
quicker you are at this, the better opportunities you have in
the professional life. Problem-solving is a skill which is
often stressed upon, in the business and corporate world. At
times you can get under a tremendous amount of pressure,
and at such times it is important to not give in and instead
with a calm mind solve the problem. T R
