St. Fillan’s Primary School
Sensational Summer Fayre!
At the beginning of June, we held
our Annual Summer Fayre which is
one of our main fundraising events
of the year. The Parent Council are
very committed to our school and
they work tirelessly to plan and
facilitate a great Fayre which is
full of fun and entertainment. The
Fayre is an ideal opportunity for
the community to get together and
for the children to take part and
play with one another. This year,
we welcomed some very special
guests, our Community Police Officers and the Police horses. The children
were delighted to welcome the horses and it was lovely to stroke them
and get to know them better. We raised over £1,200 which is a welcome
boost to our school funds. Every child will benefit from the monies that are
raised and we thank everyone who came along on the night to support our
school.
Health Week & Sports Day
Health and well-being is an important part of our school curriculum and
June is a perfect time to get out and about outdoors to improve our physical
and mental health.
During health week, everyone comes to school wearing comfortable
clothing and tries to bring in healthy snacks, lunches and drinks to enjoy.
Each class takes part in a wide range of activities which include: potted
sports, mindfulness, yoga, healthy eating and team games.
Sport’s Day is a much loved event and we are all looking forward to visiting
Gryffe High to use their grounds and engage in a variety of sports and
activities. In the afternoon, we have traditional races at the park and our
families come along to cheer us on! We march to the park in our ‘House
Family Groups’ and we even make up chants to sing.
We are looking forward to the Summer holidays and we hope that everyone
in our community enjoys some special times making happy memories with
their loved ones during the holiday season.

Renfrewshire pupils earn their maths
stars and stripes
Renfrewshire pupils’ love of
maths is fast multiplying thanks
to a partnership with experts
from the USA.
More than 170 primary pupils
from six schools across the
region took part in two weeks of
maths camps designed by maths
education experts from Stanford
University.
The alternative approach devised at the renowned Californian institution is
used by one-in-two American schools with research recording signifi cant
resultant improvements in test results.
It is the first time the camps have taken place in the UK and the creative
curriculum hosted at Glencoats Primary in Paisley and St Anthony’s Primary
in Johnstone saw maths applied across a range of subjects including
electronics and art.
Renfrewshire was the first local authority rated ‘excellent’ by Education
Scotland for its progress in raising attainment and closing the learning gap
and the Stanford maths partnership builds on a successful partnership with
the University of Strathclyde which has seen significant improvements in
reading and writing.
Councillor Jim Paterson, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Education
and Children’s Services Policy Board said: “We’re excited by the potential
of this partnership with Stanford University which is boosting our pupil’s
knowledge and confidence in maths and giving our teachers the skills to
inspire a love of maths across all our schools. We are making fantastic
progress in raising attainment and delivering on our commitment that every
pupil is given equal opportunity to achieve their ambitions.”

Global Goals
The final day of the induction week saw all
new S1s and the current S2 participate in a
full morning of activities. The Global Goals
Event encourages pupils to think about the
role that they play within their school, local and
global community. The event saw many local
businesses, charities, the science community
and Renfrewshire Council staff work alongside
school staff in delivering an excellent day. The
feedback from the 350 young people involved
has been very positive and they have clearly had
fun being involved in such a wide variety of activities, learning a great deal
about how their actions affect the world around them.
