<strong>Administrators</strong> & Direct <strong>Care</strong> Staff - Fall 2012<br />

Northampton Community College is conducting FREE statewide Department of Welfare sponsored training <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Personal</strong> <strong>Care</strong> <strong>Home</strong> <strong>Administrators</strong> and direct care staff beginning in September 2012. All courses are approved<br />

to meet the annual administrator training requirements at 55 Pa.Code §2600.64(c) and annual direct care training<br />

requirements at 55 Pa.Code §2600.65(e). Specific diabetes patient education training will be provided to meet the<br />

requirements of 55 Pa.Code §2600.190(b). Each continuing education class is equal to 3 annual training hours.<br />

Every diabetes class is equal to 2 annual training hours. This training is funded by Adult Residential Licensing,<br />

Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. Participation is limited to staff persons working in Pennsylvania’s<br />

licensed <strong>Personal</strong> <strong>Care</strong> <strong>Home</strong>s and staff persons working <strong>for</strong> entities licensed by the Office of<br />

Developmental Programs.<br />

materials to address difficult to manage<br />

behaviors seen in mental illness, dementia<br />

and depression. Reviews resident<br />

assessment processes to determine<br />

appropriate level of care and accommodations,<br />

when to recommend a level of<br />

care change and review of options <strong>for</strong><br />

next level of care. Case scenarios will<br />

allow the participant to build skills to<br />

identify red flags and develop interventions<br />

that will prevent potential unsafe<br />

Diabetes Update<br />

This course will be provided by a Certified<br />

Diabetic Educator to in<strong>for</strong>m/update<br />

personal care home personnel on<br />

diabetes, diabetic care and<br />

treatment. This will provide staff<br />

with a base knowledge of diabetes and<br />

teach them the proper techniques <strong>for</strong><br />

the injection of insulin. This diabetes<br />

patient education course meets 55<br />

Pa.Code §2600.190(b) requirements.<br />

Disaster Strikes: What If,<br />

Now What?<br />

Despite the best preventive measures,<br />

disasters and emergencies happen in<br />

personal care home facilities. When<br />

emergencies occur, appropriate<br />

actions as outlined in the site emergency<br />

plan must be implemented. Awareness<br />

and implementation of those defined<br />

actions is an important part of the<br />

preparedness process. But what are<br />

the realities and expectations during<br />

and after the incident? This course will<br />

focus on awareness of the events and<br />

behaviors that will likely take place during<br />

an incident. It will conclude with<br />

exploration and advantages of business<br />

continuity planning and preparedness.<br />

Lessons learned from past experiences<br />

along with critical terminology will be<br />

used to discuss the realities of<br />

emergency incidents in order to<br />

survive when disaster strikes.<br />

Handle Alleged Allegations of Abuse<br />

supplies, low cost and interesting<br />

activities, and low cost, nutritious food<br />

Hydration & Nutrition in the Aging<br />

Population<br />

Prepares PCH <strong>Administrators</strong> and<br />

staff to understand and competently<br />

provide basic nutrition care to residents<br />

of a facility. The PCH staff will learn<br />

to identify risk factors that place their<br />

residents at nutritional risk, strategies<br />

<strong>for</strong> preventing under/malnutrition and<br />

appropriate recommendations and treatment<br />

<strong>for</strong> clients who are identified as<br />

under or malnourished. Topics covered<br />

include: nutritional needs <strong>for</strong> older<br />

adults, physiologic changes that accompany<br />

How to Prevent it<br />

healthy living strategies <strong>for</strong> the prevention<br />

Interactive Fire Prevention &<br />

Preparedness<br />

This course may be used to train new<br />

employees in their fire safety responsibilities<br />

or to refresh current employees<br />

in those same duties as it pertains to<br />

basic fire prevention in<strong>for</strong>mation,<br />

extinguisher selection and use. Handson<br />

extinguisher experience using a fire<br />

extinguisher simulator is a part of this<br />

course (weather and location permitting).<br />

industry. Topics include Introduction<br />

to OSHA, Hazard Communication,<br />

Bloodborne Pathogens and Prevention<br />

of Spread of Infectious Diseases and<br />

Electrical Safety. The topics discussed<br />

will be beneficial to everyone working<br />

in a personal care home environment.<br />

will review admission and discharge<br />

criteria. The content will focus on<br />

properly assessing resident’s needs upon<br />

admission; making sure the home can<br />

accommodate those needs, and what to<br />

do if the home can no longer accommodate<br />

a resident. Case scenarios will<br />

allow participants to identify when a<br />

home is unable to meet a resident’s<br />

needs and what steps to follow to plan<br />

<strong>for</strong> a discharge that will ultimately result<br />

in a positive outcome <strong>for</strong> the resident.<br />

Your Staff<br />

Item 2600.65a-d. After meeting the<br />

DPW staff training requirements <strong>for</strong><br />

the direct care giver and continuing<br />

education requirements, how do you<br />

know you are providing the quality<br />

of care that your residents expect<br />

and deserve? This course will review<br />

the DPW staff training requirements,<br />

responding to customer survey results,<br />

resident council suggestions and DPW<br />

survey results. We will also introduce<br />

the benefits of developing a<br />

mentor program.<br />

Dementia, Parkinson’s & Stroke<br />

Item 2600.65d. The content of this<br />

course will provide an overview of<br />

Dementia, Parkinson ’s disease and<br />

needs and develop and implement<br />

effective resident assessment support<br />

plans more specific to the resident with<br />

Dementia, Parkinson’s and Stroke diagnoses.<br />

To expedite the registration process, please adhere to the registration and withdrawal policies listed below:<br />

ONLINE REGISTRATION<br />

Single Registration<br />

All class registrations should be done online through our new registration system “LifeLearn.” Go to www.northampton.edu/pcha and<br />

click on the link: View descriptions and course registration in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> currently available classes.<br />

• Click on the title of the class you are interested in and all available sections will show<br />

• Select the section you want by clicking on the green “register” button<br />

• Make sure the quantity is always one (1) to register your own seat<br />

• Select “add to your cart” and checkout<br />

• At this time you will be asked to login. If this is your first time registering, you need to create an account. Please make note of your<br />

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS<br />

Do the hours spent in diabetes education provided by a Certified Diabetes Educator count towards administrator and direct care staff annual<br />

training hours?<br />

50% of the hours spent in the diabetes education required in 190(b) may count towards training hours. (For example: if diabetes education is provided <strong>for</strong> four<br />

hours, two hours of that time may count towards annual training hours).<br />

Is lunch provided with the training?<br />

Lunch is not provided and restaurants are not always located near the training site. Please pack a lunch, if applicable.<br />

How do I obtain directions to the training facility?<br />

Directions are available by visiting www.northampton.edu/pcha and can also be obtained by visiting an online travel site. Please DO NOT call the training facility .<br />
