Switch Skate Park Rolling To Reality
Osprey on Clipper City Rail Trail
IPSWICH – The dictionary of
skateboarding terms defines “switch”
as riding in the opposite direction
than usual, in the opposite stance,
while making it look normal.
The word Switch is also a nickname
for this town where the new Switch
Rideable Sculpture Park is being
built.
That double entendre is typical of
the creativity behind a new 5,000
square-foot skate park that a group
of grown-up skateboarders and
entrepreneurial artists are building in
Bialek Park near the park’s frontage
on Linebrook Road.
Using a $30,000 grant from
the Essex County Community
Foundation and the Barr Foundation,
the builders – Alex Pechilis, T.J.
Sadowski, Phil Todisco and Luke
Butler – have begun constructing
phase one of Switch. Phase two and
three, which would add another
10,000 square feet to the skate park,
are being planned but are currently
unfunded.
Switch is not just another skate
park, a “quick fix”
to a community
problem, Pechilis
said.
“It is much
more,” said
Kerrie Bates,
director of
the town’s
R e c r e a t i o n
and Culture
Department.
The Switch
R i d e a b l e
Sculpture Park,
owned by the
town, will be a
permanent mixed-media hardscape,
made of poured concrete, sculpted
metal and organic materials. In
addition to being a rideable concrete
“canvas” for skateboarders and
skaters of all ages and abilities, it will
serve as public performance venue,
an outdoor arts studio and gallery.
Sadowski, who created the nonprofit
Sculpture in Open Spaces, is
planning an array of interactive art
along walls of the skate park. The art
will rotate every few months to keep
it interesting for those who come to
skate, bike or spectate.
Barbara Monahan, an organic
landscape designer and member of
the Town’s Public Art and Shade
and Beautification committees, is
designing the landscaping around
the park using native plants.
In future phases, Switch may have
a stage and seating to accommodate
concerts and theater productions.
There is even some discussion
of having a farmers’ market near
Switch.
NEWBURYPORT – It still may
be year or more before the 1.5-
mile extension of the Clipper City
Rail Trail is fully open. But those
who currently use the trail along
the Merrimack River waterfront
can now enjoy a sculpture that
celebrates a once-threatened
species, while paying homage to
the city’s industrial heritage.
The sculpture, entitled “Osprey:
Pandion Haliaetus,” by artist
Wendy Klemperer, depicts a
larger-than-life raptor clutching
a fish in its talons as it lands on
a large granite post. It is made of
discarded steel rebar that the artist
scavenged from scrap yards and
construction sites and repurposed
into the image of a bird that has
recovered from a drastic decline in
the 1950s and 1960s.
Geordie Vining, the city’s senior
planner, who is heading the project,
said, “Wendy’s Osprey sculpture
captures the grace and strength of
a wild bird of prey, and, at the same time,
its rusted old steel and rebar brings to mind
the landscape’s history of an abandoned
railroad corridor and industrial waterfront.
I think it captures the beauty and resilience
of wildlife, and maybe even the essence of
our own relationship with the waterfront
here in Newburyport.”
For Klemperer, “Industrial refuse is
transformed to living form,” she said in a
statement about the sculpture.
One of about two dozen sculptures along
the rail trail and the harborwalk, the osprey
sculpture stands across the river from a
nesting platform in the marsh.
The sculpture, positioned between the
U.S. Coast Guard station and the American
Yacht Club, is a few strides from the 1,200-
C
foot Riverfront Trail Gap behind the city’s
wastewater treatment facility. Because
the trail crosses contaminated soil, trail
users are banned from that section and
must now detour around the wastewater
treatment plant onto Water Street between
Joppa Flats and the yacht club.
This portion of the trail has been
closed to pedestrian Barnes-Dieresta and NDN 5.04_5.5.pdf bike usage 1 1/2/2019 since
contractors discovered a 130-foot section
that contained the cancer-causing chemical
PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), which
was deposited there when the railroad
Step in
used the corridor.
According to Vining, the plan is Dr. to
it and the river.
The berm is now in the design
phase, Vining said.
The senior planner said he
hopes to raise the money and have
the contaminated soil removed by
the end of summer. When that is
done, the trail can be opened for
bikers, walkers and runners until
the construction of the berm
begins, probably in another year.
The city has asked the state and
federal governments for funding
to remove the contaminated soil.
Vining recently also asked the
city’s Community Preservation
Commission for $250,000 to help
with the total project.
The city estimates it will
cost $1,386,600 to remove the
contaminated soil and build the
berm. Mayor Donna Holaday
has proposed a budget item of
$1.6 million for the rail trail next
year in the capital improvement
budget.
The extension of the popular
rail trail, which winds from the
waterfront through the city’s
south end neighborhoods, is
an important piece of the city’s
repurposing of the riverfront from
a past industrial marine use to
a current recreation and tourist
attraction, Vining said earlier.
“This paved graded trail with
multiple attractions will be within
“We expect The Switch will
appeal across cultural divides,
drawing residents, visitors,
artists, athletes, performers
and spectators from across
Essex County,” reads the
Switch application to the
Essex County Community
Foundation.
The application predicts that
Switch will allow “Boarders
momentum and trajectory,
perfecting balance, grace and
style, while musicians play
and painters paint.”
To Pechilis, who with
Butler owns Full Circle
Independent Builders, Switch
will be the next generation in
the evolution of skate parks.
Since the first skate parks
were built on the West Coast
decades ago, they have been
for town officials a solution or
“quick fix” for the problem of
skateboarders using shopping
centers, municipal buildings
and other public places to
easy walking distance of the
downtown for thousands of visitors
and immediately accessible for
thousands of residents from nearby
thickly settled neighborhoods,” he
wrote in a statement.
“The trail user’s views and
experience of this extraordinary
opening of the tidal river, bounded
by the extensive natural beauty of
the salt marsh on the other side
and the barrier islands and the
open ocean at its mouth, will be
unique and special. This area of
the river is part of the designated
Great Marsh Important Bird
Area, one of the most significant
bird areas in Massachusetts and
New England, and trail users
will see large numbers of migrant
waterfowl and raptors. The trail
will also provide a platform to
watch scenic seasonal boat traffic
on the river.”
The osprey sculpture is
Klemperer’s second on the
waterfront. Her “Black Elk,” also
made of rebar, has stood since
2005 at the western end of the
boardwalk. Her work has been
displayed at the Newburyport
Art Association’s Range Light
Sculpture Park.
Klemperer lives and works in
Brooklyn, NY and Nelson, NH,
and her work, which reflects a
lifelong fascination with animals,
is on display in scores of public
Switch Skate Park Rolling To Reality
ride.
Well-planned, Switch is
designed to appeal to a new
generation of skateboarders,
who enjoy music and art
as well as racing around
hardscapes. It is its own
subculture, the team of
builder/skateboarders said.
Pechilis and other Ipswicharea
skateboarders used to
hop the MBTA train to
Newburyport, walk the
mile and a half through the
industrial park to the Nock
Middle School, where in
2001, the city Youth Services
Department built one of
the North Shore’s first skate
parks.
Friendships forged while
skating behind the Nock
are paying dividends now,
as they contribute to the
construction of the Switch,
Pechilis said. “People have
been so generous” with
donations of supplies, labor
and skills.
The city is also assisting
through the Department
of Public Services, which is
currently building a drain to
settings and private collections
around the world. Her website is
www.wendyklemperer.com.
After a severe decline in the
osprey population in the middle
of the last century, it has enjoyed
a slow resurgence, although there
are new chemical threats to the
species. Several nesting pairs
are in Newburyport, Newbury
Star Party with the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club
Monday, July 8. Join us at 7:00 p.m. for a few celestial themed crafts. At 8:00 p.m. there will be a slide
presentation with North Shore Astronomy Club’s Star Party Leader, Brewster LaMacchia. Mr. LaMacchia’s
topic is: A Lunar Journey: Back to the Future. In the 50 years since humans first walked across the lunar
surface we’ve developed a much better understanding of when and how the moon formed, and what it’s
been up to for the last 4+ billion years since it formed. A number of recent lunar missions have shown the
potential for finding water on the moon, which is critical for establishing the infrastructure for continued
exploration as well as commercialization. We’ll look at these developments and what the future may hold
for Earth’s closest cosmic companion. At approximately 8:45 p.m. we will move outside to the adjacent
field for observation through Club telescopes. This event is best for ages 10 and up. No registration
required, free and open to the public. Rain date is Tuesday, July 9, same time. Hamilton-Wenham Public
Cape Ann Botanicals
Celebrates One-Year Anniversary
Ipswich and Newburyport, MA - June 17, 2019 - While CBD products are widely known today,
much less was known about them by the public even last year, which makes the upcoming one-year
anniversary of Cape Ann Botanicals especially gratifying to Owner Spencer Kalker.
“When we first opened, some people thought we were ‘a pot shop,’” he said. “Nothing could be
further from the truth.”
In order to build his business, which includes locations in Ipswich and Newburyport, MA, Kalker
said he felt he needed to go well beyond simply offering hemp-derived CBD products.
“A strong education component is a big part of what we do, because there is still a lot of confusion
and oncern about cannabis,” he said.
Hosting educational events throughout the year, Cape Ann Botanicals also provides nursing services
and wellness packages through a Registered nurse, who in turn helps make product selections.
Kalker said a committed staff has helped make this first year “a big success.”
“Everyone who works here believes in the life changing benefits of CBD to help people,” he added.
“I’m proud of our work and commitment to focus solely on the medicinal properties of CBD.”
To celebrate one year in business, Cape Ann Botanicals will launch a new loyalty program to attract
new customers and retain past ones. “It’s a great program that rewards repeat customers in a number
of different ways,” he said. “I’d like to think we are building a community here, so it is important we
give back to folks who give to us.”
In reflecting on the past year, Kalker said he believes they have created an accessible space that
welcomes entire families to learn and experience for themselves “what might be possible for them
with CBD.”
“This first year has been rewarding and surprising,” he said. “It’s been terrific how the community
has supported our business and staff. and we are so grateful for this support.”
Cape Ann Botanicals is located on 8 Central Street in Ipswich and at 49 Pleasant Street in
Newburyport.
Health & Wellness
BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD
I understand that periodontal
disease is a major cause of tooth
loss in adults, but is there anything
I can do about it?
Gum disease—periodontal
disease—often progresses slowly,
without pain, over a long period
of time. This is one reason why it
is common among older adults.
The longer the disease goes
undetected and uncontrolled, the
more damage it causes to gums
and other supporting tissues.
Although periodontal disease is
caused by bacteria, other factors
can increase the risk or severity of
the condition. These include food
left between the teeth, smoking,
smokeless (spit) tobacco use, badly
aligned teeth, ill-fitting bridges or
partial dentures, poor diets and
some systemic diseases such as
diabetes.
Although periodontal disease
is common, it can be controlled or
arrested. In its early stages, it can
be reversed. Treatment of advanced
cases may require surgery. Look
for these warning signs and see
your dentist if you notice any of
them: bleeding gums when you
brush; red, tender or swollen
gums; gums that have pulled away
from the teeth; pus between your
Remember when we were kids
and summers were spent riding our
bicycles around the neighborhood?
We’d screech around corners, never
worrying about balance or falls.
Now, as seniors, most of us don’t
have that exercise option.
But that doesn’t mean we have to
stay off bikes altogether. We only
need to add a wheel.
Three-wheel bicycles, known as
trikes, are becoming more popular
as the boomer generation ages. These
teeth and gums when the gums
are pressed; loose teeth or teeth
that are moving apart; any change
in your bite; any change in the fit
of your partial dentures; constant
bad breath or bad taste.
My dentures don’t feel as
comfortable as they once did.
Before I see the dentist, should I
try some different products myself
to try to improve them?
Your dentures were made to
fit precisely. If they are cared for
properly, they do not change
shape. They can become loose due
to natural changes in the gums
and bone supporting them. As the
jawbone begins to shrink, so do
the gums. In addition, the teeth
wear over time and become less
effective during chewing. Most
dentures should be replaced every
5-8 years.
When your dentures do not fit
properly, see your dentist as soon
as possible so adjustments can be
made. Professional relining of the
denture may extend its lifespan.
Do not try to change the fit
of your dentures yourself. This
can damage them and make them
unrepairable.
If I have full dentures, do I
really need to see the dentist as
often as before?
Even if you no longer have
your natural teeth, you should
see your dentist once a year for an
oral examination. The dentist will
examine your mouth to check for
any problem with the gum ridges,
the tongue and the joints of the jaw,
Senior Scene
Our Biking Days Aren’t Over
bikes have one wheel in the front
and two in the back, and most often
come with a big basket between the
back wheels to hold groceries or a
small dog.
Most of the trikes are single speed,
but some come with three or seven
speeds to make starting and slight
inclines easier. Some trikes come
with an electric motor, and you’ll
need that if you live in a hilly area.
One warning about the trikes,
however: If you rode a regular twowheel
bike when you were young,
you no doubt learned about balance
and leaning. Trikes don’t work that
way. To ride one of these safely, you
need to sit upright.
If your doctor says yes to a bicycle
of any kind, do lots of research
as well as screen for oral cancer. For
a variety of reasons, many older
adults are more susceptible to oral
diseases, including oral cancer.
About 95 percent of all cancers
are found in people over age 40.
However, many of these cancers
are treatable if detected early. Oral
tissues are also checked for signs
of other diseases that can first
manifest themselves in the mouth.
I am currently taking
medication that my physician
prescribed for me. Can this affect
my dental treatment?
When your dentist asks for your
medical history, be sure to provide
complete, up-to-date information
on your health. Inform your dentist
if you have experienced recent
hospitalization or surgery, or if
you have recently been ill. Also tell
the dentist the names, doses and
frequency of any medications you
are taking, whether prescription
or over-the-counter products, and
the name of your physician. This
information will help the dentist
to select the most safe and effective
method of treatment for you.
….to be continued
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
family dentistry. If there
are certain topics you would like to
see written about or questions you
have please email them to him at
jpstclair@stclairdmd.com. You can
view all previously written columns
blog.
before you buy. Especially look at
YouTube videos. Check out trikes
at a legitimate bicycle shop. Don’t
order one online unless you know
exactly what you’re getting.
For many of us, though, the idea
of riding any kind of outdoor bicycle
is out of the question, either because
of health, or busy streets or lack of
storage space. There’s something to
be said for indoor exercise cycles.
They come in either upright (like a
regular bicycle) or recumbent, which
leans slightly back. Recumbents are
closer to the floor, so the likelihood
of falling is reduced.
The best thing about indoor
cycles: It doesn’t matter what the
weather is.
