COPPER LAKES TENNIS COURTS
Many residents are already enjoying the refurbished tennis courts. This
summer, we replaced the chain link fence and resurfaced the courts.
New nets were purchased and the light posts were painted. We also
plan to install new benches. If you have not yet seen or enjoyed them,
check them out. Remember, the courts are for Copper Lakes residents
and guests. They must be relinquished for scheduled league matches of
Copper Lakes teams. To preserve them for everyone, it is important that
the courts be used for tennis only. They are not for soccer, skateboards,
skates, etc. Access is with the same card you use for the pools.
Security Report - Copper Lakes
To keep everyone in Copper Lakes better informed about the kinds
of incidences occurring on your street or near your homes, we are
recommending our Copper Lakes neighbors take advantage of the
following resources:
www.crimereports.com - Zoom-in to Copper Lakes to see what is
happening in our neighborhood. The incidences are recorded by the
HCSO. To get the most out of the site, it’s a good idea to register - after
which you will be able to open the website starting in Copper Lakes and
have access to historical data as well. Take some time to familiarize
yourself with all of the features on the website. It’s a valuable asset.
www.iwatchharriscounty.com - Download this smart phone app and
start reporting incidences directly to the HCSO without having to wait in
line on the HCSO non-emergency hot line 713-221-6000.
713-221-6000 - This is the non-emergency HCSO phone number for
reporting suspicious activity. Please report everything every time you
see it. This will give the HCSO statistical trends for Copper Lakes, so they
can adjust their patrol accordingly.
911 - Use this number anytime you feel threatened or in danger or you
think someone else might be in danger.
copperlakes.nextdoor.com - This free website is for Copper Lakes
residents to stay informed about incidences occurring in our
neighborhood - as well as the neighborhoods adjacent to Copper Lakes.
Please make a note of all house addresses around your home - even the
ones behind your backyard. And create a map of these addresses. This is
very important because if you ever need to call 911, the Dispatcher must
have a real street address for the incident.
Nutrition services team
offers free summer meals
Starting this summer, CFISD’s nutrition services department will offer children
18 and younger the healthy Seamless Summer Option (SSO) breakfasts and
lunches at no cost to the child. “The SSO program is a great way for us to
provide access to meals for our students during the summer months,” said
Darin Crawford, director of nutrition services. “Kids need good nutrition to
fuel their summer activities and we are thrilled to be able to continue to offer
school meals during the long summer break.” SSO is a U.S. Department of
Agriculture nutrition program and is administered by the Texas Department
of Agriculture. The meals offered through SSO give children who rely on
school meals during the academic year a good source of nutrition during
the long summer vacation. Summer meals help children return to school in
the fall ready to thrive. All sites are open Monday-Thursday only. For a full
list of sites, dates and times, visit the district website at: www.cfisd.net/en/
Berry Center employees donate more than 1,000 items to food pantry
Thirty-one Berry Center staff members, along with the community engagement department, donated approximately 1,200 non-perishable food items
to the CFISD Food Pantry on June 4 th . After hearing the pantry was opening for the summer, Beth Wade, director of the Berry Center, challenged her
employees to donate $15 each to help buy food items.
Wade said she was very pleased with the response but was impressed with one staff member in particular. “Terri Tyler on our building service crew
told her friends and neighbors about what we were doing and was able to collect $210,” Wade said.
The donations were delivered to the CFISD Food Pantry, located at Campbell Middle School and will benefit families in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
community.
Langham Creek student artist wins State VASE Gold Seal Award
Langham Creek High School senior Olivia Hoppe won a Gold Seal Medallion in the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), held April 26 th -27 th in San
Marcos. In all, 46 CFISD student artists qualified for the state competition, which is the culminating event for art students, teachers and administrators
in Texas. Competition begins at regional events in February, with artists interviewed and their works juried by certified Texas Art Education Association
(TAEA) jurors.
A Rating V equals distinguished work and a Rating IV equals exemplary work, with both qualifying the student artist to the VASE Area Event. Selected
pieces are then chosen for the state competition, with artwork assessed by jurors from across the United States. At the State VASE Event, CFISD
students received 29 state medals, led by Hoppe’s Gold Seal Medallion, which is the event’s highest honor and is awarded to those students who
received a Rating V. In addition to the award, Hoppe’s piece will join other distinguished works of art in various exhibitions across Texas. It culminates
with the Gold Seal Exhibition at the annual TAEA Conference, to be held in November in Galveston.
ST. AIDAN’S SETS SUMMER VBS
Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about Vacation Bible School
again and the folks at St. Aidan’s have another great program planned.
Scheduled for the week of July 8 th -12 th , St. Aidan’s usually hosts about
80 children. This year’s theme is ROAR: Life is wild. God is Good. We
usually have Bahama Bucks on the last day. That is always a big treat for
our students. And, last year, we hosted Wild Things Zoofari. They brought
a wallaby, a toucan, a lemur and a hedgehog. Everyone really enjoyed
that.”
Cost of VBS is $30. Scholarships are available for families in-need. New
for this year, we are adding Triumph Sports so our students will have
a full-day option. From 12-4 PM, Triumph will run a Bible-based sports
camp. Participants will play dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag,
basketball, soccer and more. Registration for this afternoon session is
$115. Registration is already open at aidanschurch.org. For additional
information, please call the church at 281-373-3203.
Simple Creme Brulee
You could make this on
National Crème Brulee Day July 27th!
INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup heavy cream
3 egg yolks
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk 3 tablespoons
sugar and cream in a microwave-safe bowl until well combined; heat
the mixture in microwave until warm, 1 to 2 minutes and whisk again
to dissolve sugar. Whisk in egg yolks and vanilla extract until smooth.
Pour cream mixture into 2 ramekins. Set ramekins into a roasting
pan and pour in enough hot water to reach halfway up the sides of
the ramekins. Bake in the preheated oven until creme desserts are
set but still slightly jiggly when shaken, about 50 minutes. Remove
ramekins from hot water and chill in refrigerator until cold, at least
2 hours. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar evenly over the top of each
dessert. Use a kitchen torch to lightly toast and melt the sugar
topping until brown and bubbly, about 30 seconds. Let the sugar
topping cool before serving. To serve, use a spoon to crack the crisp
sugar open to reveal the creamy dessert underneath. Source: http://
Garden Tips
For July
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your
spring annuals have bloomed out. Set
our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos,
petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color
until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them
in shape. Continue black spot and insect
treatments. Water 2” once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to
prolong bloom production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water,
nutrients--remove them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral
honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana,
oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot
for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent.
Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces
plant roots to grow down, instead of
sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels.
Use a bowl in your yard to measure during
waterings.
