Summer’s Best Hydrating Foods
Hot summers. Sticky humidity. Water doesn’t quench everything. There
are other great healthy options when it comes to staying hydrated during
the hot Houston summer months: fresh fruits and vegetables! Choose one
or a few of these hydrating summer foods and prepare a decadent salad,
smoothie or raw food entrée that will feed your body and your spirit!
• Cucumbers - Cucumbers taste great raw, sliced thin, are made of mostly
water and are one of the best foods to hydrate the body. You can even
float them in your water for a unique, refreshing drink. • Watermelon -
Again, this fruit is mostly water and contain essential hydrating salts,
calcium, magnesium and potassium. • Cabbage - Cabbage has tons of
Vitamin C and is packed with fiber. This summer vegetable is rich in natural
probiotics, which help to keep the digestive system working efficiently. •
Lettuce - Most lettuces are about 90% water. Be sure to choose the leafy
green variety. • Tomatoes - Sliced, wedges or even simply cut in half,
tomatoes are refreshing and also very healthy. • Berries - Raspberries,
blueberries and strawberries are at their peak during the summer. These
super fruits are chock full of antioxidants and Vitamin C and are great
for detoxing the entire body. • Figs - These summer beauties taste so
indulgent. Make a fig chutney, with some medijool dates and enjoy it
on whole grain crackers as a potassium and fiber filled treat. • Cherries -
Cherries have more antioxidants and Vitamin C than almost any food on
the planet. • Grapes - These hydrating balls of goodness are known for
their extremely high content of Resveratrol, a substance that acts as an
antioxidant and is heart-friendly. • Carrots - Carrots are almost all water.
Summer offers some the tastiest carrots, surprisingly grown in more
colors than just orange, such as yellow and green. Carrots are natural
sources of beta-carotene. Courtesy of http://renewedlivinginc.co
July Is National Ice Cream Month
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream
Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He
recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over
90 percent of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President
Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these
events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” The International
Ice Cream Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to
celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month. About 10.3 percent of all
the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream,
contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation’s
dairy industry.
CYPRESS WOODS HS ACHIEVES HISTORY, WINS CFISD’S FIRST UIL ACADEMICS TITLE
Cypress Woods High School was officially crowned the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2019 Conference 6A academics state champion on
May 31 st , the first school to win such an accolade in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD’s 79-year history.
Cypress Woods is the only school in Conference 6A to earn more than 100 points, finishing with 105.5 points over the past academic year.
At UIL competitions, students and schools earn points by placing in competitions, which add up to an overall score. While Cypress Woods
won the overall state title, individual students also won state titles in certain competitions, contributing to the overall win. Earlier this year,
Cypress Woods seniors Tristian Wiesepape and Zach Foster were named the computer science and accounting state champions while senior
Sam Armstrong was named the computer applications state champion. Junior Sarah Swift also earned a state title for Theatrical Design Scene.
The Cypress Woods accounting team, consisting of junior Aayush Gupta and seniors Zach Foster, Henry Thurman and Fernando Mercado, also
earned a team state title.
UIL offers high school students the opportunity to compete in 29 different academic competitions including accounting, computer science,
news writing and robotics. UIL creates these competitions to complement academic curriculum and gives students the opportunity to show
mastery of specific skills. To learn more about UIL academic competitions, visit the Academics page of the UIL website.
INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup heavy cream
3 egg yolks
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk 3 tablespoons
sugar and cream in a microwave-safe bowl until well combined; heat
the mixture in microwave until warm, 1 to 2 minutes and whisk again
to dissolve sugar. Whisk in egg yolks and vanilla extract until smooth.
Pour cream mixture into 2 ramekins. Set ramekins into a roasting
pan and pour in enough hot water to reach halfway up the sides of
the ramekins. Bake in the preheated oven until creme desserts are
set but still slightly jiggly when shaken, about 50 minutes. Remove
ramekins from hot water and chill in refrigerator until cold, at least
2 hours. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar evenly over the top of each
dessert. Use a kitchen torch to lightly toast and melt the sugar
topping until brown and bubbly, about 30 seconds. Let the sugar
topping cool before serving. To serve, use a spoon to crack the crisp
sugar open to reveal the creamy dessert underneath. Source: http://
