HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like
you see along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light
poles along Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the
pole number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number
facing the street. You can report streetlights that are not working or
staying on during the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage
(Google streetlight outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it
for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to
Inframark at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest
address. The association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime
inspection for lights that are out, but if you see a problem, please report
it, so we can achieve our goal to keep all the lights on all the time.
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do
not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is
anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any
vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your
street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at
home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police
catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that
you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be
home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them
out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age,
they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is
there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later).
Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never
open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything
from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into
your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain
sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your
cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first
contacts).
STOP THAT BARKING
Many dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief
in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. But, nothing is
as annoying as incessant barking - even for dog lovers. If your dog is a
yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas
to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem!
Help is as close as the Yellow Pages. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight
into why your dog barks so much or what it is trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, antibarking
collar and costs about the same. Available on the web and in pet
stores.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or
confining it to a crate can cut down on the disturbance to neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street
noise or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship
- a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting
service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility
once or twice a week.
LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with
their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each
dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have
machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help
found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
your name, birthdate (mo. & yr.), phone number, year you will graduate
Please make sure your email is correct, we send emails in the summer to
make sure all the info is still good and that you want to stay on the list. If
we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the
The Saved Seed – Displayed in the Owens Library
James Swank and Judy Reidy
Dedication Page
Garden Club President Jennifer Hydes, James Swank, HGC
members Sharon Hatzel, Tara Haire and Judy Reidy
HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB
At a VIPS volunteer luncheon in May, the Hearthstone Garden Club presented two copies of The Saved Seed to the Owens Elementary School library.
Garden club members have volunteered twice monthly throughout the 2018-19 school year in the Owens vegetable garden, a school project for the
fifth-grade students. Garden club volunteers were recruited by James Swank, one of Owens’ top volunteers who founded and administrates the
vegetable garden program and the books were dedicated to Mr. Swank.
The Saved Seed is the second early-reader book of National Garden Clubs, Inc. The 2017-19 NGC President Nancy L. Hargroves encouraged garden
clubs throughout our country to donate copies of the book to school and public libraries. The book was written by NGC Third Vice President Brenda
Moore and was illustrated by Emily Lackey. It inspires student learning as it tells the life story of a pumpkin and guides a child through the year with
all the basic steps of gardening. The two copies of The Saved Seed were presented to James Swank at the volunteer luncheon for his work with the
classes of the two fifth-grade science teachers, Mrs. Amy Takacs and Mr. Darold Frederick. The presentation was made by HGC Third Vice President
Judy Reidy, who was one of our most dedicated volunteers in the garden this year.
Hearthstone Garden Club members have enjoyed spending the past school year helping the students at Owens prepare soil, plant both seeds and
small plants, weed, water, prune and harvest in the vegetable garden. Throughout the school year, hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables and herbs
went home with the fifth graders because of this wonderful program! Members plan to continue this activity for years to come. It’s the hope of the
garden club that early readers at Owens will read The Saved Seed in preparation for their own time to maintain the garden as fifth graders.
Nutrition services team
offers free summer meals
Starting this summer, CFISD’s nutrition services department will offer children
18 and younger the healthy Seamless Summer Option (SSO) breakfasts and
lunches at no cost to the child. “The SSO program is a great way for us to
provide access to meals for our students during the summer months,” said
Darin Crawford, director of nutrition services. “Kids need good nutrition to
fuel their summer activities and we are thrilled to be able to continue to offer
school meals during the long summer break.” SSO is a U.S. Department of
Agriculture nutrition program and is administered by the Texas Department
of Agriculture. The meals offered through SSO give children who rely on
school meals during the academic year a good source of nutrition during
Berry Center employees donate more than 1,000 items to food pantry
Thirty-one Berry Center staff members, along with the community engagement department, donated approximately 1,200 non-perishable food items
to the CFISD Food Pantry on June 4 th . After hearing the pantry was opening for the summer, Beth Wade, director of the Berry Center, challenged her
employees to donate $15 each to help buy food items.
Wade said she was very pleased with the response but was impressed with one staff member in particular. “Terri Tyler on our building service crew
told her friends and neighbors about what we were doing and was able to collect $210,” Wade said.
The donations were delivered to the CFISD Food Pantry, located at Campbell Middle School and will benefit families in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
community.
ST. AIDAN’S SETS SUMMER VBS
Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about Vacation Bible School
again and the folks at St. Aidan’s have another great program planned.
Scheduled for the week of July 8 th -12 th , St. Aidan’s usually hosts about
80 children. This year’s theme is ROAR: Life is wild. God is Good. We
usually have Bahama Bucks on the last day. That is always a big treat for
our students. And, last year, we hosted Wild Things Zoofari. They brought
a wallaby, a toucan, a lemur and a hedgehog. Everyone really enjoyed
that.”
Cost of VBS is $30. Scholarships are available for families in-need. New
for this year, we are adding Triumph Sports so our students will have
a full-day option. From 12-4 PM, Triumph will run a Bible-based sports
camp. Participants will play dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag,
basketball, soccer and more. Registration for this afternoon session is
$115. Registration is already open at aidanschurch.org. For additional
information, please call the church at 281-373-3203.
Summer’s Best Hydrating Foods
Hot summers. Sticky humidity. Water doesn’t quench everything. There
are other great healthy options when it comes to staying hydrated during
the hot Houston summer months: fresh fruits and vegetables! Choose one
or a few of these hydrating summer foods and prepare a decadent salad,
smoothie or raw food entrée that will feed your body and your spirit!
• Cucumbers - Cucumbers taste great raw, sliced thin, are made of mostly
water and are one of the best foods to hydrate the body. You can even
float them in your water for a unique, refreshing drink.
• Watermelon - Again, this fruit is mostly water and contain essential
hydrating salts, calcium, magnesium and potassium.
• Cabbage - Cabbage has tons of Vitamin C and is packed with fiber. This
summer vegetable is rich in natural probiotics, which help to keep the
digestive system working efficiently.
• Lettuce - Most lettuces are about 90% water. Be sure to choose the leafy
green variety.
• Tomatoes - Sliced, wedges or even simply cut in half, tomatoes are
refreshing and also very healthy.
• Berries - Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are at their peak
during the summer. These super fruits are chock full of antioxidants and
Vitamin C and are great for detoxing the entire body.
• Figs - These summer beauties taste so indulgent. Make a fig chutney,
with some medijool dates and enjoy it on whole grain crackers as a
potassium and fiber filled treat.
• Cherries - Cherries have more antioxidants and Vitamin C than almost
any food on the planet.
• Grapes - These hydrating balls of goodness are known for their extremely
high content of Resveratrol, a substance that acts as an antioxidant and
is heart-friendly.
• Carrots - Carrots are almost all water. Summer offers some the tastiest
carrots, surprisingly grown in more colors than just orange, such as
yellow and green. Carrots are natural sources of beta-carotene.
Pet safety in the summer
Every summer, veterinary clinics can set calendars by the number of
heat related emergencies seen. The variety of symptoms runs from
dehydration, to heat exhaustion to shock to even death.
In many areas of the country, temperatures reach the hundred-degree
mark on a daily basis and heat stroke is a common occurrence. Regular as
clockwork, dogs are brought in because the owner was going to run into
the store for just a minute, got to talking to someone and thirty minutes
or more pass. In just minutes, a closed car can reach temps of 120-140 F.
A common misconception is that a cracked window is going to make a
difference. Take the test yourself. Let the dog out of the car, roll down the
window 2 inches and YOU set in there for 30 or so minutes with the engine
off. Always remember, you have the option of getting out, your dog doesn’t.
Another common problem seen with dogs in the summer, are the owners
that like to let their dogs ride in the back of a truck. The number of instances
where dogs have fallen out or been dragged behind a vehicle are staggering.
If the results of falling out at 70 MPH weren’t enough, get a piece of sheet
metal, set it out in the yard on a hot, sunshiny day and lay on it for several
hours. Rolling every once in a while to get the full effect of course. Burns
to skin and the pads of feet are very common in dogs left to ride shotgun.
Animals tied up to trees, trailers and posts are also high risk. In this
scenario, dogs are not the only ones at risk. Owners often tie up horses,
goats, lambs, ponies and all types of livestock never making sure that
there is nothing the pet can get tangled up on. Never realizing, tangled
ropes or chains make it impossible to reach shade or water.
The natural tendencies of cats are to be self-sufficient. As long as they
have shade and a fresh water supply, they can take care of themselves.
It is when owners want to take them places or try to put them in cages
outside, problems occur. There are many who will scoff at the idea of
having cats in cages, don’t, it happens.
Make sure if your pet is outside in the summer heat that there is plenty
of shade and water!
Sun Safety Tips for Campers
A few, easy sun protection measures can help all campers, counselors
and staff avoid any immediate or long-term effects of sun exposure.
• Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 on all exposed skin, including
the lips, daily even on cloudy days; apply sunscreen about 20 minutes
before being exposed to the sun; reapply sunscreen frequently (at least
twice a day) and thoroughly.
• Stay away from the sun in the middle of the day. Schedule outdoor
activities before 10 AM and after 4 PM.
• Encourage everyone to wear a wide-brim hat.
• Try to wear clothes that protect your skin (ideally long-sleeve shirts and
long pants) and sunglasses.
• Practice the “shadow rule” - seek shade when your shadow is shorter
than you are tall.
• Speak out: talk to your family and friends about sun protection.
• Be especially careful if you have fair skin, freckles or numerous moles;
blond, red or light-brown hair; blue, green or gray eyes; a tendency to
burn easily and to tan little or not at all and a family history of skin cancer.
There is no quick cure for minor sunburn. But wet compresses, tub baths
and soothing lotions may provide some relief.
July Is National Ice Cream Month
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream
Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He
recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over 90
percent of the nation’s population. I
Ice Cream in a Bag
• 1/2 cup Milk or half & half
• 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla
• 6 tablespoons Rock salt
• 1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
• 1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
n the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United
States to observe these events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
BASIC GRILL TIPS
1. Always grill in a well-ventilated area away from shrubs, buildings and
overhangs such as awnings or patio umbrellas.
2. Never leave a lighted grill unattended.
3. Keep young children and animals away from the grill.
4. Wait until the charcoals begin to turn white before you start to grill
(approximately 40 minutes).
5. Never use kerosene or gasoline to start a charcoal fire in the grill. Avoid
using chemical starters or chemically treated briquettes as well, as they
will affect the taste of your food.
6. To start a fire, pile the briquettes in a pyramid shape. Once hot,
however, they may be distributed in a single layer across the grill.
7. Place the rack of the grill at least five inches above the coals.
8. Always have a pair of fire-resistant cooking mitts handy and use longhandled
tongs while cooking.
9. Fire flare-ups can be avoided by raising the height of the grill rack or
closing the vents of a covered grill. A spray bottle filled with water is also
helpful to have around. Gas- or electric-grill flare-ups can be controlled
by lowering the heat thermostat.
10. To make a charcoal grill hotter, either move the coals together,
open the grill vents partially if closed, lower the height of the grill rack
or add more dry briquettes to the fire. Never add briquettes that are
precoated with a fire-starter fluid to the existing hot coals.
11. Try not to turn fish fillets on the grill more than once, as they are
delicate and may fall apart.
12. Most important, don’t be afraid and have fun while you’re grilling. You
will be a pro by summer’s end.
Simple Creme Brulee
You could make this on
National Crème Brulee Day July 27th!
INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup heavy cream
3 egg yolks
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk 3 tablespoons
sugar and cream in a microwave-safe bowl until well combined; heat
the mixture in microwave until warm, 1 to 2 minutes and whisk again
to dissolve sugar. Whisk in egg yolks and vanilla extract until smooth.
Pour cream mixture into 2 ramekins. Set ramekins into a roasting
pan and pour in enough hot water to reach halfway up the sides of
the ramekins. Bake in the preheated oven until creme desserts are
set but still slightly jiggly when shaken, about 50 minutes. Remove
ramekins from hot water and chill in refrigerator until cold, at least
2 hours. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar evenly over the top of each
dessert. Use a kitchen torch to lightly toast and melt the sugar
topping until brown and bubbly, about 30 seconds. Let the sugar
topping cool before serving. To serve, use a spoon to crack the crisp
sugar open to reveal the creamy dessert underneath. Source: http://
Garden Tips
For July
22
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your
spring annuals have bloomed out. Set
our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos,
petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color
until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them
in shape. Continue black spot and insect
treatments. Water 2” once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to
prolong bloom production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water,
nutrients--remove them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral
honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana,
oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot
for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent.
Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces
plant roots to grow down, instead of
sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels.
Use a bowl in your yard to measure during
waterings.
Houston Places First in the US and
Third Globally for Species Diversity
Citizen Scientists in The Greater Houston and Galveston area competed
in the Third Annual City Nature Challenge and won first place in the
United States for most species identified during April 26-29, 2019. The
Houston participants identified 3,367 species of flora and fauna from
backyards to city parks to wildlife refuges and sanctuaries. The city took
third place globally with Cape Town and Hong Kong coming in first and
second respectively.
During the City Nature Challenge, cities around the world compete to see
which urban area has the most nature and the most engaged residents
by posting observations on iNaturalist, an online Citizen Science effort to
document species. This year’s City Nature Challenge included 159 cities
around the world with almost one million observations recorded.
898 people in the Houston-Galveston area contributed to this year’s
Challenge. Eric Keith of Raven Environmental Services, Inc. and Andy
Newman of Resource Environmental Solutions, LLC were the top local
observers. The top species observed was the beautiful wildflower
Oenothera speciosa, also known locally as Pinkladies or Buttercup.
The Houston City Nature Challenge is organized by Houston Audubon,
The Nature Conservancy in Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife. To view
2019 results, click on http://citynaturechallenge.org/.
Established in 1969 as an autonomous, self-supporting chapter of the
National Audubon Society, Houston Audubon Society’s mission is to
advance the conservation of birds and positively impact their supporting
environments which it accomplishes through acquiring and maintaining
critical habitat as bird sanctuaries, providing education programs and
nature experiences for children and adults and advocating policy and
management actions in support of the mission. Houston Audubon owns
and manages 17 nature sanctuaries encompassing 3,400 acres across
the Greater Houston and Galveston regions and became an Accredited
Land Trust in 2017. To learn more, visit www.houstonaudubon.org.
The Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated
to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by
science, we create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s
toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. We
are tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at
an unprecedented scale, providing food and water sustainably and
helping make cities more sustainable. Working in 72 countries, we use a
Golf Tournament raised $102,000 for
Katy Christian Ministries
Katy Christian Ministries (KCM) hosted their 20 th Annual Golf Tournament
May 6, 2019 at Weston Lakes Country Club in Fulshear, TX. Proceeds from
the event benefit the programs and services that KCM provides free of
charge to families in crisis within a 12 zip code area in the Katy/West
Houston area.
The event’s original budgeted goal was $80,000, but members of the KCM
Development Committee set out in faith to reach a Big Holy Audacious
Goal of raising $100,000 to celebrate the agency’s 35 year anniversary
and 20 years of golf tournaments. The event raised over $102,000,
blowing the original $80,000 goal out of the water. The Title sponsor and
“Anniversary Angel” was Fort Bend County Commissioner Andy Meyers
and Fort Bend Charities. Parkway Fellowship was the Platinum Sponsor.
Other sponsors include BGE - Double Eagle and Grace Fellowship UMC -
Birdie & Eagle. These sponsors are all long-time supporters of KCM and
believe in the mission of transforming lives together.
The tournament featured a scramble format on an 18-hole course, hole
in one, raffle prizes, silent auction, a putting contest, Bubba Drive, inside
the circle and closest to the pin games. Participants were treated to a
steak dinner following the tournament and a special, anniversary edition
golf polo. Special thanks to the Bagel Cafe Bible Study Group from Grace
Fellowship UMC that prepared an incredibly tasty lunch and dinner
straight from the grill.
For more information about the tournament, to participate as a 2020
National Waterpark Day
On July 28 th , laughter and fun are just a couple of the requirements on National Waterpark Day! We recommend bathing suits, too!
Waterparks around the world provide thrilling, water plunging rides for those who seek the white-knuckle hydro powered slides. For those who prefer
to relax and unwind, lazy rivers, wave pools and spas in tropical scenes satisfy these vacationers.
With so many options to choose from, waterparks can be more than just a portion of a vacation. They can be the destination. In the United States,
nearly every state has a waterpark. The Wisconsin Dells is the Waterpark Capital of the World and the largest indoor park in America is currently at
Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania.
From the youngest family member to grandma and grandpa, there’s a splashable, relaxable experience for all. On National Waterpark Day, enjoy all
the memory making waterparks have to offer!
Don’t wait! The water is perfect at a waterpark near you. Grab your bathing suit and make a splash!
