Boundary Regional Hospital
(KBRH) with a new SPECT CT camera,
which will provide better images

the nuclear medicine department
is also part of this $1.63 million project,
funded by the Province of BC/
Interior Health (IH) and the West
Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital
District.
Construction will temporarily suspend
nuclear medicine testing at the
hospital for about 15 weeks, with
expected completion at the end of
September. Other medical imaging
services (X-ray, ultrasound, CT and
MRI) will not be impacted.
Information for patients: During
construction and installation of
the new machine, patients requiring
nuclear medicine exams will be
directed to Penticton Regional Hospital
or alternate facilities based on
their care needs.
Patients should discuss their specific
imaging needs with their family
physician or specialist. Imaging like
CT or ultrasound may be an alternative
in some cases.
Interior Health recognizes this is an
inconvenience to these patients and
appreciates their patience and understanding
as we make these important
improvements to medical imaging
for Kootenay Boundary patients. The
new SPECT CT camera will improve
the imaging available to the physicians
and specialists who are providing
care to their patients. As well, the
new equipment will ensure KBRH
has access to emergency CT scans
if/when the primary CT scanner is
unavailable due to regular upgrades,
repairs and eventual replacement.
General background: Nuclear medicine
is a branch of medical imaging
that uses small amounts of radioactive
material to diagnose and determine
the severity of or treat a variety
of diseases, including many types of
cancers, heart disease, gastrointestinal,
endocrine, neurological disorders
and other abnormalities within
the body.
Nuclear medicine is rarely used as
an emergency medical imaging tool.

Kootenay Lake Hospital is home to a thriving operating
room, which is used over 2,000 hours per year for orthopedic
surgeries, cataract surgery, obstetrical and gynecologic
surgeries and general surgeries such as hernia
repairs and colonoscopies.
Interior Health recognizes the excellent surgical services
at Kootenay Lake Hospital and has increased funding
to enable a nearly 50% increase in colonoscopies
performed at KLH this year. With increased procedures
comes the need for new, state of the art equipment. Our

RCMP foals ‘R’ all named!
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is pleased to
announce the winners of the Name the Foal contest.
Youth, 14 years old and under, were invited to submit
original names starting with the letter R. With more than
2,500 submissions, winners were selected from across
Canada, including one classroom entry.
For 80 years, the RCMP has been breeding its own
horses and is internationally recognized for producing
some of the finest Hanoverian horses in Canada. This
year, the names will go to eight new foals born at the
breeding farm in Pakenham, Ontario, this spring. The
new additions may grow up to be in the world famous
Musical Ride.
“Every year we look forward to choosing the winning
names for the foals,” says Supt. Kevin Fahey, officer in
charge of the Musical Ride and Heritage Branch.

Conservative Candidate for
Member of Parliament in Kootenay-Columbia,
Rob Morrison, has
issued a challenge to all candidates
to attend a series of debates, in multiple
riding communities leading up
to the fall federal election.
“I have spent the last two years
traveling throughout our riding,
meeting with folks and hearing their
stories,” says Morrison, “They have
made it clear that they want to have
their voices heard before the election.
I agree with them wholeheartedly
and believe that it is our duty as candidates to make
ourselves available to constituents and in their home
towns. Folks should not have to travel more than 30 minutes
to participate in democracy. Kootenay-Columbians
deserve better representation than that and I am committed
to participating in each of these debates.”
Morrison’s campaign manager, Wesly Graham, is
proposing the formation of a committee, comprised of
one representative from each candidate, tasked to work
with debate organizers to set a schedule that will provide
debates in a minimum of 12 communities in the
riding. CPC campaign staff are actively reaching out to
all known candidates and will follow up with the Green
Party and Liberal Party once those candidates have been
announced.
