Dancing Under the Sheffield’s groundbreaking organisation Under the Stars is an arts and events charity for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism, and has been running for 11 years. It all started in 2007 with a nightclub aimed at people with disabilities and their friends. With nothing like it available in the city, the founders were constantly told that the people they supported wanted ’a proper club-night ‘ out for them and their friends. They wanted a beer and a dance and to let their hair down and be treated like adults. This put a fire in the belly of the founders and in April 2007 the first nightclub was held at the HUBS, Sheffield Hallam’s students union. It was a roaring success from day one. Fast forward 11 years and clubbers fill the iconic Sheffield Leadmill for Under the Stars every six weeks. It’s a firm fixture in the calendar of Sheffield’s learning disabled community, and is often attended by clubbers travelling from other regions. The founding members with learning disabilities wanted to become DJs so they could play the music for their friends and have more ownership of their night. This formed the idea for Under the Stars music workshops in 2010. As well as learning DJ skills, their learners learned to play musical instruments, write songs and perform live as a band. What was once a small weekly group has grown to four weekly sessions, spawning many bands and musical collectives. You may have seen some of the bands appear at the Tramlines Festival. Stars the opportunity to take over a drama charity and extend its performing arts provision. It now runs theatre workshops four days a week that empower budding actors and actresses to write and perform their own stories in unique and beautiful ways. You can catch their fabulous interpretation of King Lear at The Crucible Studio on July 2. Ruth Parrott, managing director, said: “Under the Stars is not your average charity. We work with adults with learning disabilities in a way that is ambitious, striving for high quality, but is always fun, challenging and promotes independence.
