TPPD’s Shervino named
Illinois’ top DARE instructor
Orland Township’s
Will O’Brien
Retired Tinley Park Sgt. Sam Shervino
Shervino (center), who was awarded
Illinois DARE Officer of the Year, and
Robert’s brother, Officer Steve Shervino
(right) from the Plainfield Police
Department. Photo submitted
Tinley Park police officer Bob Shervino
has always had two passions: police work
and teaching.
He’s combined the interests to great
effect as a long-time DARE program instructor.
So much so, that in June, he was
selected among more than 100 candidates
as the Illinois DARE Officer of the Year.
“I was totally surprised,” said Shervino,
a member of the Tinley department since
2000 and DARE instructor since 2002. “I
didn’t even know I’d been nominated.”
Shervino, who grew up admiring an uncle
who was a sergeant in the Tinley Park
Police Department and became an Orland
Hills cadet in 1995, had his name raised
by his colleagues and a number of local
teachers whose classrooms he has graced
over the years. He was formally presented
with the award at the annual DARE and
Juvenile Officer’s Conference in Peoria,
an event he’s been attending for years to
stay on top of the latest and greatest in the
DARE program toolkit.
“It was a great day,” he said.
For Shervino, a Tinley native and father
of three, being an impactful instructor has
come down to a personable approach and
true interest in making a difference in the
lives of the more than 5,500 children he’s
taught.
“Patrol work is more reactive, and
DARE is more proactive,” Shervino said.
“I really do enjoy that. The kids are really
smart, and they’re pretty truthful and honest.
I teach them, but they also teach me.”
The Tinley Park Police Department’s
DARE program reaches nearly 1,000 students
in a calendar year, Shervino said.
When in session, he’s working six-day
work weeks, spending a few on patrol
and few in schools, where he works with
classes over a period of 10 to 15 weeks.
It is a lot of work, sure. But Shervino
finds it energizing.
“I think it’s made me a better person,
and I hope it’s made me a better parent,”
he said.
Shervino has taught DARE to all of his
children and two of his brother’s children.
His brother is an officer with the Plainfield
Police Department.
DARE’s curriculum has shifted considerably
in the time he’s been involved,
going from a drug-focused, just-say-no
approach in the early days to a broader
philosophy based on smart decision-making.
“It’s definitely changed over the years,”
he said.
The modernized focus and Shervino’s
pride in making his lessons relevant to the
children — whether through pop music
or the latest dance move — clearly work,
according to the teachers who nominated
him.
“His dedication to the program and
passion for its mission and purpose was
incredibly obvious and genuine from
the start,” Katrina Kloess, a fifth-grade
teacher at Trinity Lutheran School wrote
in a nomination letter. “As an educator, I
appreciate and respect Officer Shervino’s
natural balance between being professional
and yet appropriately personal with
the students.”
Jo Ann Greene, principal at Helen
Keller School, described Shervino’s attentiveness
in helping the children prepare
for their DARE graduation ceremony,
which features skits and slideshow set
to music.
“I have watched Officer Shervino sit in
the conference room for numerous hours
making sure every child has their picture
displayed and that the music is current and
Village Board
Officials make changes to
operations of short-term rentals
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The Village of Tinley
Park Board of Trustees
made several changes
July 2 to how it will allow
short-term rentals to operate
within the Village.
The first change — approved
by a 6-0 vote —
requires a 500-foot minimum
distance between
short-term rentals located
in residential districts.
“In response to nuisance
and safety complaints
regarding existing shortterm
rentals, staff drafted
text amendments to the
zoning ordinance to regulate
their use as an accessory
use to owner-occupied
residential dwelling
units,” Trustee Michael
Mueller said while introducing
the agenda item.
Later, the board members
also voted 6-0 to pass
another series of amendments
to short-term rentals,
such as: requiring
short term rentals to be
licensed with the Village
on an annual basis, with a
ROUND IT UP
A brief recap of action and discussion from the July 2
meeting of the Tinley Park Village Board
•In a 6-0 vote, the trustees approved renewing
an agreement with GovTemps to extend Paula
Wallrich’s service as the Village’s planning
manager from Sept. 1, 2019, through Aug. 31,
2020, at a rate of $77.49 per hour.
•The trustees also unanimously voted to appoint
Jessie Green to the position of senior custodian
with the Village.
• As part of the consent agenda, the trustees voted
6-0 to approve payment of the Village’s bills — from
June 21-28 — in the amount of $641,564.
corresponding annual fee
of $50; having staff conduct
an on-site inspection
prior to the issuance of the
license; and not allowing
a short-term rental to operate
if the applicant has
any outstanding debt to the
Village.
Appointment of new
commission chairman
After the trustees voted
6-0 earlier in the meeting
to approve various
appointments to the Marketing
& Branding, Plan,
Economic Commercial,
and Sister Cities commissions,
George Rohde — a
member of the Sister Cities
Commission — spoke
during public comment to
share concerns about the
appointment of Patrick
Rea as new chairman of
the commission.
Rea replaces Lucas
Hawley as chairman.
Rohde shared an email
from some residents of
Tinley Park’s sister city of
Büdingen, Germany.
fun for the children,” she
wrote. “The children will
forever remember Officer
Shervino for his contributions
to their community.”
Turns out, many DARE
graduates do remember
Shervino years later. He’s
regularly stopped while
out and about by 20-somethings
who’ve graduated
from college and started
careers.
“It makes me happy
they still remember me,”
he said. “They’re proud to
share who they’ve become
and, for me, that’s just fantastic.
It really does make
me feel like I’m making a
difference in the schools.”
Kloess said Shervino is
a good ambassador for police
in an era of heightened
public scrutiny, something
her students pick up on.
“Most of these kids
have never spoken to a police
office before me,” he
said. “Getting officers in
schools, face to face, not
just when something bad
happens — that’s always
going to be a positive
thing.”
In DARE, Shervino has
found his niche, said Matthew
Walsh, Tinley Park’s
chief of police.
“Officer Shervino is
one of the department’s
leaders in our ongoing efforts
to have more positive
community engagement,”
Walsh said. “It’s a
tremendous award for him
to receive, especially since
he was recognized by his
peers.”
In addition to DARE,
Shervino is a member of
the Tinley department’s
teams for active shooter
education, elderly service
and crisis intervention.
DARE, however, maintains
a special place in his
heart.
“It’s definitely been one
of the highlights of my career,”
he said.

SPOTLIGHT
Tinley Court stands out
in crowded field
Among a growing
landscape of senior-living
facilities, Tinley
Court is much like its
residents: wiser, more
experienced and thriving.
Tinley Court, 16301
Brementowne Road in
Tinley Park has been
serving the senior
community as an
independent living
complex for 35 years and
prides itself on offering
support services unique
for independent providers.
At Tinley Court,
residents pay an all-inclusive
monthly rate that
comes with three meals
a day in a dining-room
setting, utilities and
weekly housekeeping,
as well as access to
in-house amenities like
a library, beauty shop,
movie center, cafe,
chapel and more.
There are also scheduled
outings and activities
for Tinley Court
residents.
One of the newest —
and most important —
support services at
Tinley Court is its
Wellness Center, which
connects residents with
physicians and nurses.
The Wellness Center
features a nurse practitioner
as well as visits
from specialists, like a
foot doctor, audiologist,
physical therapist and
more.
“We saw that there was
definitely a need [for a
Wellness Center],” said
Cindy Stephens, Director
of Community Relations.
“Especially in the winter
time, cold and flu
season, a lot of residents
need to get to a doctor.
... Having nurse practitioners
and doctors
available has really
prevented a lot of unnecessary
hospital visits and
that’s a plus for everybody
involved.”
Stephens also made
sure to point out the
Tinley Court staff, which
she said sets the
community apart in a
crowded market.
“The staff is incredible;
they go above and
beyond,” she said. “... We
are more of a family-type
of community.”
Tinley Court offers a
variety of living options,
and currently has available
limited double unit,
which are twice the size
of a standard room.
Also right now, new
residents can get a
month of free rent after
the third month of
residency.
Stephens said Tinley
Court calls itself a “veteran-first
community” and
works with military
veterans and their
spouses to secure financial
aid.
The Junction today
Staff Report
As in the past, The Tinley
Junction newspaper
is asking for your help in
renewing its special class
of mail that enables free
delivery of an award-winning
newspaper to your
Tinley Park home or business
every single week.
The Junction can better
control its postal costs with
priority service because of
this important designation
by the U.S. Postal Service.
The good news is we’ve
already started receiving
renewal forms from Tinley
Park residents who want to
make sure they continue
to receive their hometown
newspaper. We need all
Tinley Park residents to officially
request The Junction.
The U.S. Postal Service
demands a renewal
process every three years,
so even if you requested
the paper three years ago,
we do still need you to
send in a completed form.
If you’ve never sent in
a card, we ask that you fill
Keep The Junction free
Two ways to renew your
free subscription
1. Fill out and return
(mail or fax) the form in
the center of this issue
2. Visit TinleyJunction.
com/delivery to fill out
the digital form
one out and send it in. It
only takes a couple seconds.
You can find the card on the
special insert located in the
centerfold of this week’s
newspaper. Please take a
few seconds to fill it out and
return via mail or fax.
The simplest way to renew
your free subscription
to The Junction is to go to
TinleyJunction.com/deliv
ery and fill out the digital
form.
So, to all residents, we
ask that you not wait for
others to send their forms
in but complete and return
to us your own request
form.
Thank you for your support.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Uproar over use of
Confederate group for
Fourth of July event
The Southwest Suburban
Activists group issued
on its Facebook page July
2 a call for the Village of
Mokena to “not glorify the
Confederacy” by allowing
the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry
to participate in firing of
cannons during Mokena’s
Fourth of July events.
Emily Biegel, the
group’s director, said the
use of the 2nd Kentucky
Cavalry was “inappropriate
and insensitive” to
members of the community.
She went on to lament
a lack of response in other
recent racial incidents —
including two separate
rounds of swastika vandalisms
and an incident in
which three Lincoln-Way
Central students were publicly
spotted wearing what
appeared to some to be
blackface — from the Village’s
leadership.
“[Village officials] are
going to have to open their
mouths,” Biegel said about
the lack of public condemnation
of such acts.
Mokena Mayor Frank
Fleischer defended the use
of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry
by reiterating previous
responses that “Everyone
has a right to their beliefs.”
Fleischer said there was
“no way in heck” that he
supported slavery, but
he supports keeping our
nation’s history alive —
“the good and the bad”
— through monuments,
documents and other public
displays, lest the public
“lose its reference point”
for such events.
The 2nd Kentucky Cavalry
group on its website
declares: “We chose to be
Confederates because they
fought hard for what they
believed in — protecting
their homes, states’ rights,
equal treatment in commerce,
elimination of illegal
tariffs, and preservation
of the agricultural way
of life.”
Seven Tinley
businesses robbed
evening of July 4
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Editor
Seven businesses in Tinley
Park were robbed starting
at approximately 11:30
p.m. Thursday, July 4, according
to Sgt. Patrick St.
John with the Tinley Park
Police Department.
Five of the businesses
hit were in a strip mall in
the 7900 block of 171st
Street and included Plush
Horse, Jimmy John’s,
Nancy’s Pizza and Pine
Cleaners. The other two
businesses were located
in the area of 183rd Street
and Harlem Avenue.
“We had literally just
cleared out from the fireworks
show because that
strip mall on 171st Street
is jam-packed during the
fireworks show," St. John
said. "So I probably had the
fireworks show cleared out
around 10:30 p.m. so it was
within the hour after that.".
St. John said that nearby
Lockport businesses also
were hit. The police said
From July 5
that there are two male
suspects in their late teens
to early 20s who are believed
to be involved.
“They look for the businesses
that they think have
cash on hand,” St. John
said. “All instances they
went straight for the cash
registers and they were literally
in and out.”
He added that the suspects
broke out the windows
of the doors, grabbed
money from the registers
and left. It is unknown at
this time how much money
was stolen from each business.
St. John also said the
suspects are believed to
have been driving a vehicle
that was reported stolen in
a nearby jurisdiction.
It is unknown if the suspects
are armed, but St.
John said that it is “always
safe to assume they are.”
“The public should always
be concerned," he
said. "Our motto is [if you]
see something, say something."
“They feel that it is very
alarming,” Rohde said of
the Village Board’s decision
to replace Hawley as
commissioner.
Rohde, however, said
the concerns were not
about Rea being named
commissioner — but rather
the process by which the
decision was made.
“I’m not saying in any
way that I think the assignment
of Pat Rea is
a bad decision by any
means, but I think before
any decision is formally
made we need to consider
the individuals involved
… in hopes that we can
make a better understanding
of how we work together
on the commission,”
Rohde said.
After Rohde’s comments,
Trustee Michael
Glotz said it was his recommendation
to Mayor Jacob
Vandenberg to appoint
Rea as the new commissioner
of the Sister Cities
Commission.
“That man probably
knows more about the Sister
Cities and Tinley Park
than anyone in this town,”
Glotz said. “I couldn’t
have asked the mayor to
put a better person — more
qualified, more knowledge
and done more for this
town — than Mr. Rea.”
Glotz, however, did ask
Rohde to share the email
with him.

For those who aren’t
familiar, The Tinley
Junction publishes
announcements, cool
photos taken around town
and afar as well as photos
of Tinley pets. On Page
10 of this week’s issue,
you can find a couple
announcements submitted
by Tinley residents. You
can highlight a birthday,
graduation, engagement,
wedding— you name it.
I know a majority of
us are constantly taking
pictures of events we’re
at or unique things we see
outdoors, which make for
perfect submissions to our
Photo Op section.
And of course, the fourlegged
friends always deserve
some recognition, so
send in a photo of your pet
and a description of what
makes them awesome and
they can be featured as Pet
of the Week.
While throughout the
pages of this paper we
cover stories of residents
doing a variety of activities
around the community,
we also like to highlight
events such as a granddaughter
whose grandparents
are so proud of them
for graduating college
through our community
announcements or showing
off a cool photo taken at
a Tinley park or even in
one’s own backyard.
The Tinley Junction is
your paper, too, so we love
making it as personable as
possible and including all
the little things that can’t be
seen on the surface. If you
have an announcement,
cool photo or an awesome
pet you want to see in the
paper, email me at jacque
Letters to the Editor
Reopen Mental Health
Center instead of build
proposed racino
Instead of more gambling
machines, card dealers
and gaming of horses
which encourages people’s
addictions to winning and
money, the mental health
center needs to be cleaned
up by the state of Illinois,to
which it belongs, and reopened
again as a mental
health center once more.
Too many people enter
emergency rooms at hospitals
and wait several hours
or days to be placed in a
mental health facility. It is
cruel and unjust, as most
are not responsible for
their mental health issues.
The fact that they wait so
long for help only exasperates
their problems and
causes undue desperations
of anxiety and insecurity.
The statistics prove that
jails have a vast number
of its inmates with
mental health problems.
They cannot find a place
to help them so they haplessly
wind up doing
things against the law and
therefore are incarcerated.
While in jail their
problems are magnified
because of fear of gangs,
drugs, loneliness and an
uncertain future. Further,
if they cannot make bond
for a hearing of minor infractions,
they wind up in
jail just like someone who
murdered,raped or stole
goods. It is an unjust system
that treats all non bond
payers just like hardened
criminals.
Jail is not therapy nor a
hospital, it is hell! Illinois
closed this facility because
they were too cheap to upkeep
it and the majority of
the powers that be do not
care about these unfortunate
people who cannot advocate
for themselves due
to their condition. These
people need the CARE of
a doctor, nurses, therapy
and perhaps a tranquilizing
drug to help them see the
light for their future.
We need to help people
who need it most. We do
not need another avenue
to game and gamble under
the excuse to increase
tax revenue. It seems like
no one knows where this
money truly goes anyway!
McCarthy served
stood out to him the most
from the one-day trip to
“The people,” he said.
“The volunteers and how
Vogt Visual Arts Center to display tribute, charity show
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
When longtime Frankfort
resident and known
local artist Margi Hafer
lost her older sister, Donna
Johnston, at 76 years old in
February 2017, she knew
that she had to do something
to pay tribute. Hafer
and Johnston were close,
they traveled together and
most importantly, they
painted together.
“Maybe I dreamt about
it, or maybe my sister was
talking to me somehow,
but this is what we came
up with, her and I,” Hafer
said. “And I know she
would have wanted something
to happen with her
artwork.”
When Johnston passed
away from melanoma,
she left nearly 200 paintings
unfinished, whether
because of the loss of her
eyesight or interest in a
new project, Hafer said.
The Johnston family, who
resides in Huntly, Illinois,
were overwhelmed with
the number of paintings
and collection of art supplies
she left behind.
After painting with
Johnston for more than 20
years, Hafer knew that she
was the one who should
take on the responsibility
of finding something positive
to do with her sister’s
artwork.
“She couldn’t drive anymore,
she could hardly
write her name, but she
still wanted to try to paint,
and so she didn’t finish a
lot of things that she had
started, but some of those
might have been things
she didn’t finish because
she had went on to something
else,” Hafer said.
“I didn’t know what was
what, so I said all of these
are unfinished. The family
didn’t know what to do
with them, so I just said
‘OK I’ll take them and do
something,’ and so that’s
what I did.”
Hafer began finishing
some of her sister’s paintings
and realized it was
too big a project for one
person. That’s when she
decided to enlist other
artists to help her finish
many of the paintings and
do something special with
them. She then arranged
for 57 artists to finish
Johnston’s paintings for a
book, which she published
through Blurb.com in January.
“Even people I didn’t
know that other people
talk to, when they heard
about it, they wanted to
be part of it, that was kind
of heartwarming,” Hafer
said.
The book, “The Sisters
Project,” features before
and after pictures of many
of the paintings, as well
as comments from the artists
about Johnston and/
or working on Johnston’s
artwork.
Despite their enthusiasm
to participate in the
project, many of the artists
were challenged by
the task at hand. Hafer said
many came to her questioning
how they should
complete the paintings.
“I said you have to make
it your own and do your
own thing with it,” she
said. “There are a couple
that made them into books;
there’s one that made a
stained glass mosaic and
embedded some of the artwork
into it; some people
painted oil paint over it;
some people painted pastel
over it.”
Among them, Julie
Dekker, gallery director at
Margi Hafer (left) put together a project to be on display at the Vogt Visual Arts Center through July 27 in Tinley
Park in memory of her sister Donna Johnston (right) who died in 2017. Photos submitted
the Vogt Visual Arts Center
and one of the artists
who participated in the
project, said that it was a
daunting task despite her
desire to be a part of the
project.
“Painting on another
person’s painting is, I
found, a very daunting
task,” she said. “Most artists
don’t want you touching
their work, and when
you’re doing a painting
the last thing you want
is somebody else going
on there and painting on
your work. So, it’s a little
with it. I ended up doing it,
but I had a hard time with
it.”
Core to the entire project
was doing good. In
line with this goal, the
proceeds from the book
sales are used to donate
books to various areas
where people might need
a touch of inspiration.
Hafer has donated copies
to such places as various
Crisis Support Centers
and hospice centers. She
hopes that the artwork and
the words from the artists
will be a point of inspiration
for them, which was
something her sister did
as a social worker.
Now that the book
has published, Hafer has
teamed up with the Tinley
Park-Park District’s Vogt
Visual Arts Center to display
and sell the work to
benefit charity.
“I tried to think of what
Donna would have wanted,
and she was such a
spiritual person and such
a giving person, I would
think that she would want
her work to do something
good for others, so this is
where I went with it,” Hafer
said.
The show at the Vogt
Visual Arts Center will
feature more work than
what was published in the
book, Hafer said, noting
that nearly 180 pieces will
be displayed in the charity
show.
“There were 57 that
were in the book I created,
but there’s since been a
couple more that didn’t get
in the book because they
were too late to get in the
book and then there’s over
40 of my sister’s finished
pieces that she herself
finished before she died,”
Hafer said.
Johnston’s artwork is
a vast collection of landscapes,
flowers and other
light, happy scenes, Hafer
said.
“She had a very fanciful,
loose way of painting,”
she said.
Dekker added: “They’re
very vibrant, they’re all
nature, they’re flowers and
landscapes. Very, very vibrant
colors, and yet, they
can be soft in the same
way. Some really wonderful
use of colors, and a lot
of floral pieces. It’s very
enjoyable to look at all
of them. [She had] a very
nice, natural style. And
then, what people did with
them, it just makes it very
interesting.”
Dekker was touched to
be given the opportunity to
participate and dedicated
to helping bring the project
to fruition by not only finishing
two paintings, but
also providing the space
for the show.
“[Margi] came to me
first and said, ‘Well I have
this idea, and I want you
to be one of the artists and
I was so touched that she
would even think that,”
Dekker said. “I thought
what a great way to get
[Johnston’s] work out
there and then it won’t all
go to waste and that way
everyone can help and the
charities can help so many
people. We can reach so
many people this way,
and I was like I’ll make it
happen, I don’t care how.
This was great, I was able
to make the gallery available
for the month of July
and I’m just really excited
about it because it’s so
good on so many levels.”
Dekker added that because
of the variety of
artists participating in the
project, each specializing
in their own style, the “Sisters”
show will be quite
unique.
“It’s really interesting.
People took the work and
did something else with it
and really used their imagination
and I was really
impressed by that,” she
said. “Everything that’s
come in has just been really
nicely done.”
The proceeds from the
artwork sold at the event,
which is priced between
$50 and $700, will go
directly to the charity of
the buyer’s choice, Hafer
said. In fact, the artists
who participated donated
the finished pieces, along
with any added accoutrements,
like framing or
matting.
“We won’t see any of
the money,” Hafer added.
Among the many charities
that will benefit are
PAWS of Tinley Park, the
North Shore Medical Center,
Mokena’s JourneyCare
Foundation, the Lincoln-
Way Area Chorale, Union
Street Artists Guild, Ann
& Robert H. Lurie Children’s
Hospital of Chicago
and the Frankfort Art Association.
Several of these charities
were selected for the
roles they played in Johnston’s
care prior to her
passing, but others were
chosen for their closeness
to Hafer.
When the show closes,
the items that are unsold
will be donated to charities
for fundraising efforts, Hafer
added.
“All of it will go to a
good cause somehow,” she
said.
The opening reception
for the show will take
place from 7-9 p.m. Friday,
July 12. Hafer will be
in attendance along with
several other artists who
volunteered their time
and contributed work. The
opening reception will include
live music, drinks,
appetizers and more. Additionally,
Hafer will have
“The Sisters Project” book
on-hand at a reduced cost
and will sign purchased
copies.
The Vogt Visual Arts
Center is located at 17420
67th Court in Tinley Park.
Sisters will be on display
through July 27.

The Dish
The Whistle aims for family comfort,
caters to morning and night crowds alike
Alex Ivanisevic
Contributing Editor
A modern, Chicago vibe
with all the comforts of
a family restaurant, The
Whistle Sports Bar & Grill
in Tinley Park is serving
up homemade meals for
both night owls and early
birds alike.
Mark Mikesell, originally
from Louisville, and
his wife, Stephanie, who
grew up in New Lenox, established
the restaurant at
7537 W. 159th St., Tinley
Park in July of 2017.
Mark said he entered
the restaurant business after
working “in corporate
America for 15 years.”
Stephanie, on the other
hand, grew up around her
family members’ restaurants
her whole life. The
two said they were happy
to open their restaurant in
a spot that provided them
with what they were looking
for in an area with
which they were familiar.
“It is family friendly but
it is more like a downtown
bar on the south side,”
Mark said. “Our business
is 42 percent food, so people
come in here and food
is our leader. It is all fresh
— even our fried pickles
[$7.49], we batter ourselves
— and that is why
we are successful.”
Stephanie added, “We
also serve breakfast all
day, and the cool thing
about us is that Monday
through Saturday we are
open from 6 a.m. until 2
a.m., and Sundays we’re
open 11 a.m. until 2 a.m..
Our kitchen closes at 1
a.m. every night, which is
huge.”
There is also an ages
21-and-older gaming area
A few of customers’ favorite menu items at Whistle
Sports Bar & Grill are (clockwise from front left) the
fried pickles chips, Gino’s steak sandwich with fresh
cut fries, loaded nachos, the Crisp Punch and Hunch
Punch cocktails, the Mini Turkey O’Toole and Buffalo
wings. Alex Ivanisevic/22nd Century Media
in the restaurant, and gamers
are offered a complimentary
breakfast between
6 and 9 a.m. The Whistle
Sports Bar also has a lunch
special Monday-Friday, 11
a.m.-3 p.m., giving customers
an array of menu
items at discounted prices.
The Mikesells take pride
in the vast menu The Whistle
Sports bar offers with a
creative variety of appetizers,
entrees and more,
which they promise are
all homemade and fresh.
With the restaurant’s long
hours and full menu available
until 1 a.m., Mark and
Stephanie keep a staff of
roughly 30 employees.
“We’ve got a really good
crew here,” Stephanie said.
The Whistle already offers
catering from the full
menu, but because of the
restaurant’s popularity, the
Mikesells hope to open a
space next to its location
as a party venue to host
events by fall.
“The staff and the people
that come here are what
makes the sports bar so
successful,” said Dominic
Botta, Stephanie’s younger
brother, who manages
the restaurant. “The regulars
that come in weekly
and help make this bar go
round and really talk us
up are a part of that. Also,
having the staff here that
gives off the ambiance and
personality of the space we
like to have.”
Stephanie agreed and
said, “We try to treat everyone
like family,” adding
that they make the
effort to connect to the
surrounding community
and sponsor youth athletic
teams and activities.
Introducing the Dunree II: Crana Homes’ Newest Luxury Townhome Design at Brookside Meadows
Crana Homes, the acclaimed developer
of hundreds of homes in the southwest
suburbs has introduced another awardwinning
luxury townhome design, the
Dunree II, available now at Brookside
Meadows in Tinley Park. The Dunree II
joins the award-winning Lennan II and
Fahan II in a secluded area of trees, lakes
and open spaces. Prices range from the
upper-$200s – including site – and with
only a limited number of sites
available buyers should act quickly.
For45 yearsCrana Homes commitment
to complete customer satisfaction
has been summed up as “Pride of
Workmanship - Pride of Ownership.”
This commitment to quality and
satisfaction makes Brookside Meadows
the ‘best of the best’. The proof is in the
homes which are attractive, comfortable,
well-built and energy-efficient. But, the
entire community will soon be
sold out so now is the time to make a
commitment and select a home from
one of the award-winning floorplans of
the Dunree II, the Fahan II and the
Lennan II.
The new Dunree II is a generous three
bedroom design with 3,194 square feet
of total living space, including a large
1,226 sq.' basement. The master suite is
on the first floor which features a walk-in
shower and seat. The home has elegant
nine foot tall first floor ceilings, two and
a half baths, upgraded custom maple
kitchen cabinets, granite countertops,
upgraded light fixtures, and hardwood
oak floors in the foyer, powder room,
kitchen and living room. The Dunree
II also includes deluxe landscaping
and a two and a half car dry-walled
garage with a cement driveway. Enjoy
entertaining guests with a full walk out
basement and a 12' x 12' deck.
The Fahan II has a grand two-story
entrance foyer that leads to a split level
floor plan with three bedrooms (fourth
bedroom optional) and two and a half
baths. It is a beautiful 3,303 total square
foot luxury townhome (including a
1,216 sq.' basement). A large open space
kitchen with sleek granite countertops is
surrounded by generous custom maple
cabinets. The 1st floor master bedroom
offers an optional coffered ceiling and
the optional master bath includes a
relaxing soaker tub. Overlooking the
great room is an elegant loft. The home
is accented by beautiful oak throughout,
including doors, floors, railings and trim.
A full lookout basement and a patio are
also included in the Fahan II.
The Lennan II is a comfortable two/
three bedroom split level home and
includes most of the features of the
Fahan II except the master suite is on the
upper level and the Lennan II features a
dining/family room. It has 3,167 square
feet of total space (including a 1,049 sq.'
basement).
All homes have underground utilities,
deluxe landscaping and first floor
laundry rooms. Buyers can select options
like an impressive fireplace, walkout
basement, coffered ceilings, skylights and
a soaker tub in the master bath.
Lake Michigan water, a sprinkler system
and smoke detectors are provided.
Brookside Meadows also has important
cost-efficient, energy-saving features
like a high-efficiency furnace and
Lo-E glass installed throughout. Other
‘green’ features include an Energy
Miser hot water heater, vented soffits,
1.75" insulated entrance doors, energy
efficient appliances and Tuff-R insulated
wall sheathing.
Tucked away in a quiet section of Tinley
Park, Brookside Meadows is close to
everything: retail, dining, transportation
routes, Metra rail station and airports.
The school system is among the best in
the state and Tinley Park, named “The
Best Place In America to Raise aFamily”
by Bloomberg’s BusinessWeek, maintains
40 parks and the Bettenhausen indoor
recreational center.
The Dunree II floorplan gives
buyers a fresh set of new choices
at Brookside Meadows – but only
while they last! See the fully furnished
and beautifully decorated models which
are open Monday - Thursday 10:00am
RUNNING
Speed certainly Matt-ers in Stars and Stripes run
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
The “welcome Matt” was out
last week at the Tinley Park Stars
and Stripes 5K Run.
The top three finishers of the
28th version of the annual July 4
race were all named Matt.
Lisle’s Mitch Gilbert, who
won the race last year and had
captured first in seven of the previous
eight races, did not run the
event and the Matts took over.
Tinley Park chiropractor Alexis
Landgrebe won the women's
division with a time of 21 minutes
and one-tenth of a second.
That was good for 30th overall.
The men’s champion was Matt
Gagen, from Lemont, with a
time of 16:40.3. It was the second
title in the past three years
for Gagen, a 2014 Lemont graduate,
who ran at Loras College
and then used his final year of
NCAA eligibility this past season
at DePaul University.
"This was my third year running
it," Gagen said of the event.
"I won it, got third and now won
it again. It feels pretty good. It
[winning] is always kind of the
goal. It's a mental thing. I can't
enter just to run.
"I also like the number of people
here. I like the atmosphere,
the food, the music, the people
celebrating. It's a feel-good overall
event that makes you want to
come back."
There were 641 people who
finished the event at McCarthy
Park. So, the fact that the top
three were named Matt was statistically
staggering. Coming in a
familiar spot of second place was
Matt Swiatkowski. The Orland
Park resident and 2002 Sandburg
graduate was second in the event
for the second straight year with
a time of 16:49.8.
The night before, in the Veterans
Liberty Run & Walk in
Orland Park, Swiatkowski also
finished the 2-mile race in second
place for the second straight
year.
Tinley Park resident Alexis
Landgrebe crosses the finish
line as the fastest female Stars
and Stripes participant.
"I had a faster time in both
races of about 15 seconds," said
Swiatkowski, who finished last
year in Tinley with a time of
17:06.1. "At least in the last couple
of races I'm improving. I'm
getting older (35) and still dropping
time, so that's good. It's just
a good day and a good gauge to
see where I'm at."
Matt Jung, a Tinley Park resident
who finished third with a
time of 17:02.1, had a poignant
reason to run.
"I ran in memory of Staff Sgt.
Michael J. Sutter," said Jung, a
2018 Lincoln-Way East graduate
who qualified for the NAIA
nationals in cross country for
St. Ambrose in 2018. "He was
a Tinley Park resident who died
in Iraq [on Dec. 26] in 2003.
"I didn't plan to run the race
this year but my mom [Janeen]
encouraged me. We were such
family friends with him and
it meant everything to run for
him."
Trevor Swanson (17:22.8) and
David Hansen (17:31.9) rounded
out the top five finishers.
Landgrebe has placed before
in the female division but won
the female category race for
the first time. Originally from
Michigan, she and her husband
Charles have a chiropractic practice
in town.
"We have been here for about
10 years," Landgrebe said. "I'm a
achieve it."
Her and her family love Tinley
the event brings.
"I have a heart for it," Landgrebe
said. "I try to run all three
of the Tinley races. I love the
community feeling and how
hard the community works to put
this together. Plus I enjoy seeing
Two other Tinley Park residents,
Isabelle Vaccaro (35th
overall, 21:10.1) and Samantha
Maciaga (36th overall, 21:12.5)
were the next two top female finishers.
The race kicked off a full day
of Fourth of July festivities.
"We couldn't have asked for
a better day," Executive Director
for Tinley Park-Park District
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Abby Skarbek
AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP
Flaherty earns league
commissioner’s award
Abby Skarbek is a senior-to-be basketball
player at Andrew High School who
is also a cancer survivor profiled in the
June 27 edition of The Tinley Junction.
How did you get involved in
basketball?
I watched the games when I was
younger. I was attracted to it. I went to
St. George when I was younger and it had
volleyball and basketball. I played both
but fell in love with basketball.
What do you love about the sport?
I love the teamwork of it. It’s not an individual
sport. You have to rely on your
teammates. If one person is not having
a good game, your teammates pick you
right up. It’s five players working as one.
What’s going on with college?
If I play, I play, but it’s not necessary for
me to play basketball in college. I’m looking
more for the academics of college. I
fell in love with the University of Georgia
and that’s my No. 1 choice right now. I’m
going to look at a few more schools. My
major isn’t really clear yet. I’m playing it
by ear. I’m keeping my options open.
What kind of pump-up music do
you listen to before games?
I listen to a lot of country. Luke Bryan.
That’s what gets me motivated to play well.
Is there a TV show you could binge
watch forever?
“NCIS.” My grandma [Deborah James]
and I bond over that. Any time it’s on, I
think of her. I can always sit down with
her and watch episodes and episodes of
that show.
Is there a movie you can watch
over and over and not get sick of
it?
“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.”
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
It’s a Netflix movie that I can relate to. It’s
a high school setting with challenges that
I am going through and my friends are going
through. It’s like it’s tailored to me.
Is there a food that if they paid
you a million bucks you still
wouldn’t eat it?
Fish. Salmon. That’s my biggest fear.
If you could have a dinner with
anyone – dead or alive – who
would it be with?
Alex Morgan. I’ve always looked up
to her. She’s always been a role model.
She goes out to every game with the best
attitude. I would like to just pick her
brain and see where she gets all of that
spunk on the field of play.
If they made a movie about your
life, who should play you?
I would say me. I can’t think of anyone
else. Plus, I could portray my emotions.
What would the title of the movie
be?
“The Walking Miracle.”
Thunderbolts looking to dig deeper into the playoffs
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Any player, parent or
fan who endured Andrew’s
1-8 football season
in 2016 is likely happy
with the direction the program
is going in.
In coach Adam Lewandowski’s
first season, the
Thunderbolts lost eight
straight before pulling off
a 17-6 victory over winless
District 230 foe Stagg
to conclude the season.
The 2017 season found
the Bolts back in the Illinois
High School Association
playoffs for the first
time since 2013. They
faced Plainfield North in
the first round in Class 7A
and lost 41-6.
Last season found the
Bolts back in the playoffs
where they ran into
a buzzsaw and dropped a
42-11 decision to Nazareth
Academy, which
went on to win the Class
7A title after battering
four more opponents by
a combined score of 161-
79.
One could argue that
there were a number of
first-round teams the
Bolts could have handled,
but they had to play what
turned out to be the best
team in the class right off
the bat.
Some impact players
are scheduled to be back
for the Thunderbolts and
thoughts of a third straight
playoff appearance are
prevalent during summer
camp. So is a deeper run
into the playoffs.
“It’s going to take a lot
of hard work,” safety Joe
DeHaan said, “It will take
effort on the field and off
the field. In the weight
room. In the class room.
We have the guys to win
a state championship.
But it’s about everybody
working together and
finding that team chemistry
because team chemistry
can take you as far as
you need to go.”
Offensive and defensive
threat Rocco Iannantone
said he would like to
see this team get over the
hump of that first game in
the playoffs.
“If you can get past that
first round game, you are
in the second round and
you are looking at the
quarterfinals,” he said.
“Then after that, it’s one
game at a time.”
He likes what he has
seen in the summer.
“From Week 1 last
year to Week 1 this year,
the progression has been
excellent,” he said. “We
have a lot of returning
starters and I think our
whole backfield except
our quarterback is returning.
The receivers are
looking good. The offense
is looking tight and the
defense is where it needs
to be.
After two 6-4 seasons,
Lewandowski is also itching
to coach his team beyond
the first round.
“You have to stay
healthy and that’s always
at the top of the list,” the
coach said. “The other
thing is that the buy-in
has to be strong and it has
to go past the starters. It
has to be the guys on special
teams. It has to be the
guys who are the second
and third strings. The entire
program. The sophomores.
The freshmen.
The freshmen B-teamers.
They all have to be 100
percent in the same direction.”
game at Kewaskum in
Aside from trying to
crack the starting lineup
after taking a year off
from football, Spells is
busy this summer as he
qualified for the USA
Track and Field Regional
with a time of 14.59 seconds
in a meet in Lisle
the 17-18 age group at
Joliet Memorial Stadium
Mychah Spells is busy this summer as a receiver on the football team and is hoping
to qualify for nationals in track.
said. “I have a chance to
from last year.”
Last year, he placed
THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK
Officials numbers are down - is verbal abuse to blame?
Jeff Vorva
Sports Editor
I
don’t know when and
how the tradition of
booing and yelling
at umpires and referees
started, but it did many
decades ago and we may
be paying the price now.
Think about it. What
other authority figure gets
to get chewed out and
called vile names by large
groups of people and have
it be socially acceptable?
Sure, people yell at cops,
judges, teachers, bosses,
politicians and others in
authority. But it’s generally
not accepted.
Umps and refs?
Fair game, every game.
Long before I was born,
a group of pro baseball
players including Phil
Rizzuto, Ralph Branca and
Roy Campanella recorded
a funny song called “The
Umpire.”
Some of the lines
include “We ain’t got no
use for the umpire unless
he calls ‘em our way,”
“He’s blind as a bat,” “Up
goes his thumb and the
bum says ‘You’re out.’”
and “He’s right when he’s
wrong and he’s wrong
when he’s right.”
This was a kid’s record,
by the way. Teach em’
early that officials suck.
In the pecking order of
sports, what would happen
if an athlete yelled and berated
his coach publicly the
same way a coach berates
an official? Bench time
and maybe getting kicked
off the team would be in
his or her future.
I’m not being a prude.
And I’m not saying it
should stop (except for
the unnecessary name
calling - cut it out you idiot
morons!). And I find “The
Umpire” to be a hilarious
ditty.
But there is a nationwide
shortage of refs and umps
and it’s getting so bad that
some states are encouraging
high school athletic
directors to schedule their
Friday night football
games on Saturday.
In Illinois, Inter Athletic
Council of Officials
Recruitment Chairman
Gary Grohovena could
spend a couple hours citing
facts and figures about the
decline in the numbers of
officials and he would just
be getting started.
“The numbers keep going
down and the average
age of a football official is
50,” Grohovena said. “In
five years, I’m wondering…wow.
“It’s nationwide, not just
Illinois. It’s most sports.
Baseball and softball are in
trouble. Football is getting
there. Basketball…maybe
not yet, but the numbers
are not growing the way
they should. Wrestling,
soccer, etc., etc., you name
it. They need more officials
in everything. And
there are no gender walls
either. It affects boys and
girls sports.”
He said he is at a loss
to figure out why people
don’t want the job.
The Tinley Park
resident, who has taken
his share of verbal garbage
in more than 30 years on
the job, admits that the
younger generation might
not want to deal with the
abuse, especially when it
gets physical.
“Unfortunately, you see
on the news a clip of someone
attacking a referee,”
Grohovena said. “You see
someone knocking down
a baseball umpire. That’s
scary when that happens.
But that’s just really rare.”
What’s not rare is the
constant yakking from
coaches and fans. Grohovena
said he is not sure
if that totally the reason
why the numbers are down
but it might be a part of the
reason.
Grohovena hopes that
people who dismiss being
officials for that reason
realize that other walks of
life offer criticism, too.
“You deal with these
challenges every day in
life,” he said. “If there is
a play at the plate and the
umpire calls the runner
Gary Grovena, a longtime referee and officials recruiter
from Tinley Park, executes a holding signal. JEFF
VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
safe, everybody on one
side says ‘Yay!’ and everybody
on the other side says
‘Boo!’ That boo…that’s
just a part of the game. You
have to accept that.
“If you work at McDonald’s,
someone can toss a
bag of fries back at you if
they are overdone. You can
get yelled at if the Coke is
too watery. How do you
deal with that? If you work
in a retail situation, you
have to deal with people
who are upset. You have to
explain to them what you
are going to do and how
you are going to handle it.
Policemen? They are very
good at conflict resolution.
Teachers deal with it all
the time. Most of us have
some conflict resolution
skills there.
“People are yelling and
some people don’t want to
be yelled at. But you deal
with it.
Grohovena admits officiating
is not for everyone.
But the 68-year-old
fell in love with it when he
started in his 30s.
“I envy the new officials
because they have more
games ahead of them and
I have more games behind
me,” he said. “The best
people I know are sports
officials. I’ve made so
many friends.
“I enjoy being on the
field. I enjoy the game.
I enjoy the high school
game and I enjoy the
people I work with.”
Now if we can just have
people on the sidelines and
in the stands tone it down
a bit.
Standing Pat
In last week’s column
about the youth team
Jayhawks, I accidentally
identified assistant coach
Pat Brankin as Ryan
Brankin (his son). Maybe
it’s because Ryan is getting
older and Pat is getting
younger...
LISTEN UP
“We have the guys to win a state championship. But it’s about
everybody working together and finding that team chemistry
because team chemistry can take you as far as you need to go.”
