WELCOME TO FEDERAL HYBRIDS
We would like to thank all our customers, dealers, and distributors for making this past year successful. Your
support is greatly appreciated! If you are new to Federal Hybrids, you can be assured that the varieties highlighted
in this brochure are top-of-the-line seed products with the latest in technologies, genetics, and traits. We strive to
maintain our customers’ trust and business by providing the highest-quality, best performing corn hybrids,
soybean varieties and alfalfa seed. We also work hard to provide excellent customer service.
Federal Hybrids is an independent, family-owned company that offers a broad portfolio of products including Bayer/
Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow/Dupont, BASF, and others to help maximize your diversity, thereby reducing your risk.
One of the ways Federal Hybrids customers benefit from our being an independent company is through
third-party evaluation of genetic diversity.
In an age of high input costs, today’s farmer needs to closely manage all aspects of their operation. Deciding which
varieties and traits go on each field is one of the most important input factors we can control. Federal Hybrids
matches your farm’s soil types and farming practices with the best varieties and traits the industry has to offer. Our
knowledgeable, experienced sales staff will help you choose the right varieties and traits for your specific farm fields
to give you the greatest return on your investment.
As we look to the future, we are focusing on farm averages of 300 bushels per acre on corn, 100 bushels per acre on
soybeans, and 10 tons of alfalfa per acre. Our goal is to help the American farmer increase their production and
be more competitive in today’s marketplace.
We appreciate you being part of our team, and we look forward to being your seed specialist.
We’ll do whatever we can to earn your business,
and even more to keep it.
OUR STORY
FOUNDED 1932
FEDERAL HYBRIDS
FEDERAL HYBRIDS STORY Federal Hybrids, Inc. has had
a successful history going all the way back to 1932 when
Allen Thurman founded the company in Eastern Iowa.
From the start, Federal Hybrids was on the cutting edge
of new technology by being one of the first companies
to promote single-cross hybrid seed corn in the United
States. Today, that same leading-edge technology is a
core value of Federal Hybrids.
In 1999, Tim and Kathy Butikofer purchased Federal
Hybrids and began marketing seed in neighboring states.
In 2004, Tim and his brother-in-law, Kent Banwart, began
selling seed in Iowa. Kent soon became an owner in the
Company. In the past few years, family members, Rhett
Jensen and Brennan Fehr, have also become owners in
the Company. Federal Hybrids carries on the traditions
of family values, the latest in research and technology,
top seed quality, and diversified products.
Today Federal Hybrids markets in 20 states and is known
for becoming one of the fastest growing independent
seed companies in the Midwest. In the last seven years,
Federal Hybrids’ growth has increased an average of
25% per year. Our rapid growth is due to a combination
of great people, great products, great performance, and
repeat business.
Product selection has been the key to our growth and
success. Our distributors are a large part of our product
selection team. We feel our distributors are the ones
walking your fields, knowing your production limiting
factors, and have been a great asset to our product
selection process. Product selection and prescription
product placement are two of the most important
decisions that can help increase your yield and
profitability.
Federal Hybrids offers an excellent portfolio of leadingedge
genetics and technology that will significantly
boost profit on every acre planted. Federal Hybrids
continues its well-established relationships with the
industry’s leading genetic and trait providers. Our ability
to access genetics and traits from such a diversified
platform provides the “Federal Yield Advantage”. The
Federal Yield Advantage is evident in many F.I.R.S.T. Trial
results, appreciated by our satisfied customers, and
responsible for our repeat business and rapid growth.
Federal Hybrids is honored to have served the American
farmer for 88 years with the latest in seed technologies,
genetics, and traits. We welcome you to become part
of Federal Hybrids so you, too, can experience the
“Federal Yield Advantage”!
Federal Hybrids is proud to introduce several new Platinum Series Hybrids! This level of distinction is given
only to hybrids that have been released through the most advanced breeding techniques and deliver the
highest level of agronomic and yield performance available!
Gold Series Hybrids
Federal Hybrids is also excited to introduce our new Gold Series Hybrids! Our goal is to provide you with
excellent choices and to assist in placing the most appropriate product for you on each individual acre. This
Energize your corn with Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat!
The “Federal Yield Advantage” brings you a new corn treatment:
Federal Hybrids is treating most of our corn with Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat (FACT). This gives additional value to our
customers, fulfilling Federal Hybrids’ commitment to bring you the “Federal Yield Advantage”!
Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat:
• Quicker germination, emergence and growth
means the crop achieves greater photosynthetic
capacity and better preservation of soil moisture
• Improves nutrient uptake and utilization
• Facilitates carbon fixation and increases
nitrogen utilization
• Triggers the plant to grab more available
nitrogen and improves plant health to help
maximize yield potential
* Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat is the brand name for Federal Hybrids’ seed corn treatment.
Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat (FACT) pushes the seed
toward a faster start, helping plants avoid early-season
disease pressures that can inhibit yield potential throughout
the growing season.
Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat (FACT) assures growers
that they have maximized their yield potential from the
moment the seed hits the ground.
Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat (FACT) provides a superuniform
coating with excellent seed appearance and flowability.
We understand that farm margins are tight; therefore, we
want to give you the extra advantage for being our loyal
customers. This is our way of expressing our thanks for putting
your confidence in Federal Hybrids.
The “Federal Yield Advantage” brings you
Federal ArmourGuard Corn Treat… it’s a FACT.
GROW WITH US!
CONV | Conventional Corn
No Traits
ORGANIC | Conventional Corn
Organically Grown Seed
UNT | Conventional Corn
Untreated
RR | Roundup Ready® Corn 2
Roundup Ready® Corn 2 contains in-plant tolerance to Roundup® brand herbicides, enabling growers to spray Roundup® brands over the top,
from planting through the V8 stage or 30-inch corn height, with excellent crop safety and no yield reduction. Compared to popular conventional
corn programs, the Roundup Ready® Corn 2 system costs less, while allowing hybrids to reach their maximum yield potential. While the U.S.
regulatory agencies have given full approval to Roundup Ready® Corn 2 for commerce in the U.S. for marketing and consumption as food, food
ingredients and feed for livestock, certain regulatory approvals are pending in certain export markets. For more information on these approvals,
or for assistance in locating domestic grain outlets, see the American Seed Trade Association web site (www.amseed.org) or contact Monsanto
directly at 800-768-6387.
VT2 PRO | VT Double PRO® Corn
VT Double PRO® is the first double-stacked corn trait that requires just 20% separate, structured refuge. Dual modes of action provide maximum
protection against corn earworm and other above-ground pests, like European and Southwestern corn borers and fall armyworm.
VT2 PRO RIB | VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® Corn Blend
VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® Corn Blend is a mix of 95% traited and 5% refuge seed. With refuge-in-a-bag, there’s no need to calculate or plant
separate, structured refuge in the Corn-Growing Area. It contains dual modes of action for maximum protection against corn earworm and other
above-ground pests, like European and Southwestern corn borers and fall armyworm.
DGVT2 PRO RIB | DroughtGard® Hybrids with VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® Corn Blend
DroughtGard® Hybrids with VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® Corn Blend contain the first double-stacked trait with dual modes of action for above
ground insects and maximum protection against corn earworm. Superior genetics along with innovative drought-tolerant trait technology helps
DroughtGard® Hybrids withstand drought conditions for a better chance of maximizing kernels per ear and overall yield potential.
SSTAX RIB | SmartStax® RIB Complete® Corn Blend
SmartStax® RIB Complete® Corn Blend is a mix of 95% Bt. traited, 5% refuge seed. You get all the benefits of SmartStax® technology, plus the
convenience of 5% refuge seed interspersed in every bag. It has proven to have a 10 bu/A advantage over non-Bt. traited corn and a 20 bu/A
advantage over non-Bt. treated corn + a soil-applied insecticide.
GTA | Agrisure Artesian® GTA (Artesian + Agrisure® GT)
The Agrisure Artesian® GTA trait stack combines a hybrid that optimizes the conversion of water to grain and provides improved yield consistency
with tolerance to in-crop applications of glyphosate-based herbicides.
VP3110 | Agrisure Viptera® 3110 (Agrisure Viptera® + Agrisure® GT/CB/LL)
The Agrisure Viptera® 3110 trait stack offers season-long comprehensive above-ground insect control. It is ideal for areas where corn rootworm
management is not a key focus.
VP3110A | Agrisure Viptera® 3110A (Agrisure Viptera® 3110 + Artesian)
The Agrisure Viptera® 3110A trait stack combines the benefits of a hybrid that maximizes yield when it rains and increases yield when it doesn’t, with
season-long comprehensive above-ground insect control. It is ideal for areas where corn rootworm management is not a key focus.
3122 E-Z | Agrisure® 3122 E-Z Refuge® (Agrisure® 3000GT + Herculex® XTRA)
The Agrisure® 3122 E-Z Refuge® trait stack offers the convenience of an E-Z Refuge® seed blend with multiple modes of action against corn borer
and corn rootworm, as well as suppression of ear-feeding insects.
GT3011A | Agrisure Artesian® 3011A (Artesian + Agrisure® 3000GT)
The Agrisure Artesian® 3011A trait stack combines a hybrid that converts water to grain more efficiently than other hybrids, providing improved yield
consistency, with traits that control corn borer and corn rootworm, and herbicide flexibility.
“In 2018, we planted Federal Hybrids
seed corn alongside two of Pioneer’s
“BEST” numbers in the same field
(Pioneer is the leading competitor in
our area.) All other factors were the
same: tillage, fertilizer, and herbicide.
At harvest time when we pulled into
the Federal Hybrids’ cornfield, the
yield increased by up to 30 bushels
per acre! The numbers speak for
themselves.
Our dealings with Distributor Dan
McAtee go back to the mid-1980s. His
customer service has always been
excellent and his advice on how to
improve yields, regardless of variety,
has been “spot on.” Thank you Dan.”
“Bruellman Farms has been planting
Federal Hybrids seed since 2004. On
our farming operation, we plant 700
acres of corn and 700 acres of
soybeans each year. This last year
Federal Hybrids 5280 VT2 Pro RIB
went head-to-head with DeKalb on
our farm. The Federal Hybrids 102-
day maturity seed corn beat the
DeKalb 107-day maturity by 12 to 15
bushels per acre. We were very
happy with the yields.
Distributor Kent Banwart provides us
very good customer service. He
makes time for us whenever we have
questions. We can’t say enough good
things about the Federal Hybrids staff.
The people are just great to work
with.”
“We have been a 100% Federal
Hybrids seed customer for the past
four years. We plant between 500 to
700 acres of corn and 500 to 700 acres
of soybeans each year, plus some
alfalfa. We have gotten phenomenal
yield results from Federal Hybrids
seed. Two years ago, we planted
Federal Hybrids 5860 DGVT2Pro RIB,
and it yielded 290 to 300 bushels per
acre. Federal Hybrids 5550 SmartStax
RIB and 5550 VT2 Pro RIB have also
been some of my top-yielding hybrids.
We have great respect for Distributor
Nick Benson and his agronomy
background; we trust his input and
advice. We have traveled with the
Federal Hybrids group, which included
owners, dealers and growers. They are
like family… top-notch in our book.
“Last year was the first time I planted
Federal Hybrids seed. I planted
Federal Hybrids 6680 VT2 Pro RIB
which produced OUTSTANDING
YIELDS… 225 to 275 bushels per
acre. I have some areas on my farm
where there are poor soils in spots
which make these yields even more
impressive. This hybrid produced
amazingly good seed quality with
excellent test weight.
I appreciate being able to work with
Distributor Blake Wulf, who, for a
young man, is very knowledgeable
about seed. Blake provides me
excellent customer service. With
yields like that, I will be planting
more Federal Hybrids seed.”
R2X | Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® Soybeans
Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® Soybeans are built on the high yielding Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybean technology. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend®
is the industry’s first biotech-stacked soybean trait with both dicamba and glyphosate herbicide tolerance. With tolerance to glyphosate
and dicamba, farmers will have access to additional tools to help control glyphosate-resistant broadleaf weeds such as Palmer amaranth,
waterhemp and marestail, along with other tough-to-control broadleaf weeds such as lambsquarters and velvetleaf. The technology offers the
yield and quality potential that farmers already know and trust from their Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans.
RR2Y | Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybeans
Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans have demonstrated a clear yield advantage: They yield an average 4.5 Bu/A advantage over original Roundup
Ready soybeans. Studies show that Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans develop greater root biomass, more nodes on the main stem and larger
shoot biomass than original Roundup Ready® soybean products.
LLGT+ | LibertyLink® GT27
Grower flexibility in weed management for ease and peace of mind.
• Liberty® and glyphosate come with fewer application restrictions on buffers, rain, wind, time of day, date for easier weed management.
• Weed control programs for the LibertyLink® GT27 system are based on non-volatile chemistries and low drift risk to minimize off-target
concerns for peace of mind.
• Availability of both Liberty and glyphosate allows growers to select the right post emergence weed control program to match their needs inseason.
SOYBEANS
I have been planting Federal Hybrids
seed and have seen nothing but the
“BEST”. Being a young farmer, who
has had to start from scratch, I look
for a seed company that will provide
high yields. These higher yields then
go toward paying for farm expenses
and land expansion.
My seed specialist, Rick Getka, has
been a big supporter of mine and is
one of the major reasons for my
success. He provides data from his
own test plots, samples my soils, and
ensures that we get the correct seed
for our specific soil type. He is always
just a phone call away if I have any
questions. When driving down the
road, having some of the best looking
and yielding crops gives me a lot of
pride. I owe a lot of that success to
Rick and the Federal Hybrids Team!
“As a first generation farm family, we
have gone through a lot of trial and
error in the search of a seed company
and products that will help us grow
the best crops possible for our
variable soil types. We also look to see
who has our best interest in helping
us grow our farming operation.
Federal Hybrids Distributor Gabe
Camp has given us cutting edge
hybrids and variety selection for our
specific soil types. We really enjoy
the fact that Federal Hybrids is an
independent, family-owned seed
Federal Hybrids customer for the
last three years, and will continue
2020 PRODUCT GUIDE
Think Before You Bin-Run
Verification Required The last patent on the original Roundup Ready ® soybean trait expired a few
years ago and U.S. farmers may legally plant saved seed from some varieties of soybean containing
the Roundup Ready ® soybean trait. However, it is important that you check with your seed supplier to
determine if a specific Roundup Ready ® soybean variety is covered by other intellectual property rights,
and if so, the policy for saving seed of that variety.
Higher Seeding Rate A higher seeding rate
may be required for bin-run Roundup Ready ®
soybeans compared to new branded seed.
Yield Loss Genuity ® Roundup Ready 2
Yield ® soybean varieties and Roundup Ready 2
Xtend ® soybean varieties typically have a higher
yield opportunity than Roundup Ready ®
soybean varieties*.
Cleanout Loss Loss of seed and/or shrink
occurs during the seed cleaning and handling
processes for bin-run seed.
Seed Treatment Costs Treating your seed
will add costs—both the cost of the treatment
and the application of that treatment.
Lost Income Every bushel of saved seed
you plant is a bushel you’re not selling as
commodity grain.
Increased Seed Management If you plan to
save and bin-run Roundup Ready ® soybeans for
planting, you will have to manage your harvest
operations and grain storage so that the seed
isn’t co-mingled with other seed that’s covered
by intellectual property rights.
High Value of New Branded Seed
Latest Technology
• High-yielding soybean technologies
• Better variety options
• Leading seed treatment options
Customer Service
• Dealer agronomic support before
and after the sale
• Replant policy support
• Convenient packaging and delivery
FEDERAL HYBRIDS
Alfalfa products offer the potential for high yields, excellent forage quality and disease resistance.
HVX RR - HARVXTRA® WITH ROUNDUP READY® TECHNOLOGY
ALFALFA
• Gives growers the ability to better manage the yieldversus-quality
tradeoff. It offers more flexibility in cutting
schedule to achieve improved forage quality or greater
yield potential, when compared to conventional alfalfa at
the same stage of maturity.
• The HarvXtra® technology provides unprecedented
flexibility by widening cutting windows, which gives
growers the option of each cutting for: a) maintain their
normal harvest schedules for higher-quality forage, or b)
delay harvest for 7-10 days for increased yield potential,
without sacrificing forage quality, compared with
conventional alfalfa at the same stage of maturity.
• Averages 12-15% less lignin and 12-15% higher neutral
detergent fiber digestibility (NDFd) and relative forage
quality (RFQ) than conventional alfalfa harvested at the
same stage of maturity.
• Stacked with the Roundup Ready® Technology for
unsurpassed weed control with excellent crop safety.
HERITAGE RR - ROUNDUP READY® ALFALFA
production over the life of the stand. Potential for improved weed control, better crop safety, increased yield, and better quality forage,
make Heritage RR the alfalfa of choice for anyone looking for value in their alfalfa. Grower satisfaction is very high and acres planted
to this type of alfalfa continues to increase throughout the United States. This variety is the first choice for growers looking for top
production or who commercially produce hay. If you like Roundup Ready® corn and soybeans, you will like Heritage RR alfalfa. If you are
worried about weed resistance, consider that alfalfa is cut 3 to 5 times a year and those weeds will be clipped off that many times during
the season. Plant Heritage RR alfalfa and take advantage of the freedom to harvest weed-free hay the first crop.
FLAGSHIP ALFALFA - QUALITY ALFALFA
• Selected for high resistance to Aphanomyces Race II
• Performs well with or without APH II pressure
HIGH RESISTANCE TO
APHANOMYCES RACE II
Flagship Alfalfa provides a combination of top production with high resistance to Aphanomyces root rot Race II (APH II). This leading
alfalfa will please growers by its resilience, high yield potential, forage quality and dark green color. Strengths of Flagship Alfalfa
include strong offense with excellent defense against all the major alfalfa diseases – including APH II. Place this alfalfa on fields where
history has shown difficulty in establishing alfalfa because of pressure from APH II and wet springtime weather. It will even shine
under ideal conditions on good ground without heavy disease pressure. This is an all-around solid alfalfa.
