COLIN
SPEAKMAN:
50 YEARS OF
THE DALES WAY
50 years ago, Colin
Speakman, walker, poet and
countryside campaigner,
with the late Tom Wilcock
and other colleagues from
the West Riding Area of the
Ramblers Association, helped
to create the Dales Way, the
popular long-distance trail
from Ilkley (with links from
Otley) to Windermere through
the Yorkshire Dales and Lake
District.
Colin will tell the fascinating
story behind the ‘Peoples’
Path’, and the continuing
success and international
appeal of what is now one of
Britain’s most popular long
distance walks. He will offer
a brief impression of the
many delights to be enjoyed
by walkers along the 81 mile
mainly riverside route, leading
directly from the towns and
cities of West Yorkshire, along
Wharfedale to the heart of the
Yorkshire Dales National Park,
and on through Dentdale and
Lune valley to the Lake District.
JACKIE OATES:
CHRISTMAS
SHOW
Jackie Oates is a name
synonymous with the
reinvigoration of English folk
music, beguiling audiences
with a delicate balance of
tradition and reinvention.
Her mellifluous voice and
imaginatively plaintive fiddle
style has won her several BBC
Folk Awards during a 10-year
recording career that began
as a member of the nascent
Unthanks and has continued
with six acclaimed solo
albums.
Collaborations with Alasdair
Roberts, Belinda O’Hooley
and her brother Jim Moray
on material that’s ranged
from traditional ballads
to eerie lullabies and rich
contemporary songs, Jackie
has earned fans beyond the
folk scene she grew up in. Her
music has featured on Lauren
Laverne’s 6 Music show, as
well as alternative station
XFM. To quote the illustrious
Mojo magazine, Jackie Oates
enthrals.
BALLET:
CINDERELLA
131 mins
Witty, vibrant, glamorous and
romantic, Alexei Ratmansky’s
Cinderella will sweep you off
your feet. The most in-demand
choreographer in the world
and the master of the modern
story ballet fills every bar of
Prokofiev’s cinematic score as
he charts Cinderella’s journey
from rags to rapture. Jerôme
Kaplan’s vivid, sophisticated
designs draw inspiration from
Dior, Schiaparelli, the elegance
of 1940s Hollywood, and
Surrealist art.
