TRUCKING<br />
Having covered some 35,000 test<br />
kilometers, the truck drivers, who<br />
drove at a distance of only 15 to 21<br />
meters, praised the driving<br />
comfort and the general sense of<br />
s a f e t y . T h e fi e l d t e s t a l s o<br />
demonstrated savings in fuel<br />
consumption.<br />

Infrastructure (BMVI) contributed<br />
funding of approximately EUR1.86<br />
million to the research project. The<br />
project partners DB Schenker,<br />
M A N Tr u c k & B u s a n d t h e<br />
Fresenius University of Applied<br />
Sciences presented the results at<br />
the Ministry.<br />
A c c o r d i n g t o t h e p r o j e c t<br />
partners, the use of truck platoons<br />
could ensure more efficient use of<br />
s p a c e o n m o t o r w a y s , l e s s<br />
congestion and increased road<br />
safety.<br />
“The mobility of the future will<br />
be automated and networked. Of<br />
course, this is also true for<br />
logistics. I therefore fully support<br />
t h e i n d u s t r y i n b r i n g i n g<br />
technologies such as platooning<br />
to market maturity,” said Andreas<br />
Scheuer, Federal Minister for<br />
T r a n s p o r t a n d D i g i t a l<br />
Infrastructure.<br />
“We want to make the processes<br />
even safer, more efficient and<br />
more environmentally friendly, all<br />
along the value chain. The drivers<br />
have a key role to play here. In a<br />
digital truck they will be modern<br />
logistics specialists. This will open<br />
u p n e w p r o s p e c t s f o r t h e<br />
profession."<br />

According to DB Schenker's<br />
research, platooning can be used<br />
e x t e n s i v e l y i n t h e l o g i s t i c s<br />
network.<br />

Deutsche Bahn AG said, "We have<br />
analyzed our European transport<br />
network and it is safe to say that<br />
around 40% of the kilometers<br />
traveled could be carried out in<br />
platoons." For this, however,<br />
further tests and ensuring the<br />
regulatory framework would be<br />
necessary. Customers would also<br />
benefit. "With platooning we can<br />
o ff e r e v e n m o r e r e l i a b l e<br />
transports."<br />
