Russia’s metallurgical industry
expected to increase
output by 4 – 6% in 2011
Russia‘s Ministry of Industry and Trade has forecast
a growth of four to six percent in the industrial production
of the country‘s metallurgical industry.
Accordingly, in 2011, Russia is expected to produce
102.8 million mt of iron ore concentrate – up
3.3 percent year on year, 30.8 million mt of metallurgical
coke – up 3.7 percent, 49.5 million mt of
pig iron – up 4.2 percent, 67 million mt of crude
steel – up 4.7 percent, 57.5 million mt of rolled steel
products – up 4.5 percent, and 8.8 million mt of steel
pipes – up 7.3 percent, all compared to the expected
level of output in 2010.
Meanwhile, in 2011, the country‘s domestic consumption
of fi nished rolled steel products is expected
to amount to 32.7 million mt - up 7.9 percent
year on year, while steel pipe consumption is expected
to be at the level of 2010, i.e., 8.5 million mt.
In 2011, according to the ministry‘s forecast, Russia‘s
export of fi nished rolled steel products will increase
by 1.7 percent year on year to 30.5 million mt, while
steel pipe exports will grow by 18.2 percent year
on year to 1.3 million mt, based on the intentions
of Russian pipe producers to participate in the
construction of major international pipelines.
The share of imports in Russia‘s domestic rolled
steel product consumption will amount to 10.9 percent
in 2010, decreasing to 9.8 percent in 2011.
Meanwhile, the share of imports in the country‘s pipe
consumption will amount to 11.8 percent in 2010,
and is expected to decline to 11.2 percent in 2011.

End 2010 Review of Russian Steel Sector
January 2011 Report
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade
of the Russian Federation (Minpromtorg RF), the
Russian steel sector in 2010 grew by about 10% in
comparison with 2009. Output has only just reached
2005 levels of production after the crisis. Crude steel
production in 2010 grew from 59.4 mt to 66.5 mt.
Finished steel output grew from 50.8mt in 2009 to
55 mt (8.3% growth) and steel tube and pipe from
6.7mt to 8.2 mt (23% growth).
Total metallurgical goods transportation
by the Russian railways in 2010

Japan. Russian export of steel 15% pipes in 2010 was just
1.1 mt (69% of the 2009 level, only).
Year 2010 apparent steel demand in Russia was
30.3 mt, or 120.3 % of 2009 demand. Steel demand
in Russia has been led by strong activity in the pipe
and tube sector due realization of some 81% large projects
by Gazprom and Transneft. Production in the
automotive industry recovered post-crisis thanks
to the implementation of a ‘cash-for-clunkers’
programme. Domestic consumption of steel pipes
in 2010 was about 8.5 mt, or 150% of the 2009
level – from which the LDP share was 3.0 mt. Total
Russian steel tube and pipe production capacity
reached 4% about 13.5 mt in 2010. Very satisfied

2009-2010, State guarantees in the metallurgical
sector involved credits for a total sum of
Rbl 53.4 bln. Total 2010 investments in the Russian
steel sector reached about Rbl 160 bln.
Under the 81% latest forecast of the Ministry of Industry
and Trade of the Russian Federation, 2011 production
volumes in iron and steel metallurgy will increase
on the average by 4 – 6%. The projections assume
fi nished steel rolled product output of ~57.5
mt, steel pipe output of 8.8 mt (on 7.3 % more).
Domestic consumption of the fi nished steel
rolled products in 2011 is expected at ~32.7 mt
(7.9 % growth in demand); and demand of steel pipes
at 8.5 mt (zero growth in demand). The import share
in domestic consumption in 2011 will be ~9.8%
for rolled steel products and ~11.2 % for steel pipe,
according to Ministry projections.
The main drivers of steel demand will include the
APEC Vladivostok Summit in 2012, the Student Games
in Kazan in 2013 and the Olympic Games in Sochi in
2014. Preparations for the world football championship
in 2018 will underpin subsequent demand: FIFA
2018 in Russia is estimated to require some 3 mt
steel products for stadium construction alone.

The exhibition centre ZAO Expocentre in Krasnaya Presnya
in Moscow is one of the most modern and most attractive
trade fair venues in the CIS.
This is where Metallurgy-Litmash, Tube Russia and
Aluminium/Non-Ferrous will be held again in 2012. The
complex has an exhibition space of over 70,000 m 2 ,
including eight halls and attractive outdoor premises. Its
conference halls with a total space of 2,000 m 2 provide a
professional ambience for an additional programme of talks,
round table discussions and seminars.
Working with ZAO Expocentre, the operators of the exhibition
centre, and also with other joint venture partners and with
our subsidiary in Moscow, we are planning and organising a
locally based industry show with a state-of-the-art infrastructure
and logistics – from visitor advertising to the
planning and construction of your stand.
