Senegal qualify for first
AFCON final in 17 years
•Pip Tunisia 1-0
SENEGAL reached their
second Africa Cup of
Nations final with an extra-time
victory over Tunisia.
Both sides had penalties saved
in normal time before Tunisia
defender Dylan Bronn
inadvertently headed the only goal
of the game into his own net.
Mouez Hassen tipped Sadio
Mane’s free-kick onto Bronn’s
head as Senegal - who face
Algeria or Nigeria - moved a step
closer to their first Afcon title.
Tunisia had a late penalty award
overturned by VAR.
The best opportunity came in the
72nd minute when Sassi’s shot
FORMER Super Eagles
captain and coach Christian
Chukwu has thanked billionaire
businessman Femi Otedola for
helping foot his medical bills in a
London hospital.
Chukwu returned to the country
on Friday, after nearly two months
in London, where he underwent
treatment and surgery at
Wellington Hospital.
Chukwu, first Nigerian to lift the
Africa Cup of Nations trophy,
when he captained the national
team to win the 1980 edition on
home soil, said his medical
condition was in a complicated
state before the intervention of
Otedola, who spent a total of
N36,635,000 on his treatment,
travel and accommodation
expenses.
“Otedola has made me, I can
play football again,” Chukwu said
jokingly when he paid the oil
mogul a visit in Lagos on Friday.
“If you saw me before I left for
London, you won’t believe I’ll be
was blocked by Koulibaly’s arms,
the ref pointing to the spot. Sassi
stepped over and took a tame shot
that was easily saved by Amigo
Gomes.
On the other end five minutes
later, it was Senegal’s turn when
substitute Ismaila Sarr was
brought down but Saivet’s effort
was saved by a full stretched
Mouez.
With no winner in regulation
time, the match went to the full
length and it was Senegal who
would make the most of their luck
after 100 minutes of football.
Skipper Cheikou Kouyate’s
freekick from the right bounced on
Bronn’s header with keeper
Mouez off his line.
AFCON 2019
Nigeria crashes out!
•Its Algeria vs Senegal for final
•Nigeria vs Tunisia(3rd place)
A
last minute goal from Riyad
Mahrez fired Algeria to reach
the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of
Nations, after defeating Nigeria 2-1
at Cairo International Stadium last
night.
Eagles seemed to show their
Algerian foes much respect, allowing
the Desert Foxes to set up final
showdown with Senegal while Eagles
play Tunisia in the classification
match.
And on the account of 90 minutes,
the Algerians were the most compact
and determined team and deserved
their victory against a Nigerian side,
who seemed to lose their rhythm on
the night.
On eight minutes, Nigeria should
have been a goal down after Belaili
brought the ball down brilliantly,
before sending in a delightful cross
which Bounedjah somehow bundled
wide.
The Algerians dominated
possession and they should have
notched the opener on 30 minutes,
when Algeria striker Baghdad
Bounedjah, who had missed a fair few
chances in this tournament, made a
harsh of another begging chance as
Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo
totally misread the long ball, and
Bounedjah nipped in to go one-onone
with goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi,i,
who stopped the ball from drifting into
the net
The Algerian attacking duo of
Belaili & Bounedjah looked sharp as
they applied pressure on the Nigeria
defence
Algerian never allowed Eagles to
play their football .
n 36 minutes, Nigeria obviously feel
they need to give Baghdad
Not relenting in attacking Nigeria,
Algeria deservedly got the opener five
minutes from half time as Troost
Ekong, who put Eagles into the semifinal,
scored an own goall, It was Riyah
Mahrez with some trickery down the
right, whose cross was deflected off
Collins and then bounced off the chest
of Troost-Ekong into his own goal..
Eagles were unable to score as the
first half ended with Algeria 1-0 up.
On resumption of the second half,
the Desert Foxes started the brighter
of both sides in the initial minutes, as
they played in a composed and
confident manner while Nigeria
seemed to play with a degree of
After God, it’s Otedola in my life, says Chukwu
here talking to you. I think I won’t
be making a mistake if I say after
God, it’s Otedola in my life.
“I had many complications and
I couldn’t walk. When I heard
Otedola brought out money for my
treatment, I marvelled because in
my circle, we didn’t know him
before then. We have people with
us but maybe they forgot or it’s
not in their character (to help).
“I don’t know how to thank
Otedola enough, God bless him.”
Chukwu’s wife, Lilian, who was
with him alongside his daughter
and sister throughout the duration
of treatment in London, also
thanked Otedola for coming to
their aid.
“God used him to bring my
husband back to life. He (Otedola)
will never lack,” Lilian stated.
Philip Akinola, Acting Chief
Operating Officer, Zenon
Petroleum and Gas Company, who
represented Otedola on the
occasion, expressed delight at
seeing Chukwu back on his feet
tension and lacked a touch of self
belief.
On 52 minutes, not wanting to be
pushed aside, Alex Iwobi was brought
down by Baghdad Bounedjah, who
was given a yellow card.. The resulting
freekick was wasted but in dramatic
fashion, Nigeria were awarded a
penalty on 72 minutes after Aissa
Mandi was adjudged to have handled
the ball in the box off a shot by Petyer
Etebo.
Odion Ighalo stepped up to take the
penalty and sent it into the net. The
goal by Ighalo provoked Algerian
fans to start throwing plastic bottles
and objects at Egyptian fans for
again. “I’m happy to see him
radiant again, unlike when I
visited him in Enugu. He walked
from the ground floor to his room
on the second floor of his hotel,
supporting Eagles.
Algeria players looked tired and
tried to keep the Super Eagles at
bay, relying on Mahrez and Belaili’s
speed in counter attacks.
Ismail Bennacer could have given
Algeria the lead two minutes into
stoppage time but his shot kissed the
crossbar.
And it was Mahrez who won the
match for Les Fennecs four minutes
after the full time mark when his free
kick was perfectly placed over the
wall and into the net to lead Les
Fennecs to the final for the second
time in their history and the first
since1990.
We're confident of winning the
trophy — Mahrez
After leading his side to a 2-1 victory over Nigeria last night,
Algerian captain Ryad Mahrez has said his side's target is AFCON
trophy.
Algeria will clash with Senegal on Friday in the final of the 2019 AFCON.
Marhez said, “we have been good all through, scored 12 goals and
conceded 2. Beating Nigeria will give us the confidence to go all the
way.”
He observed that Senegal is a good team, and added that, “we played
them in the group stage but we are confident we can win the trophy.”
My players thought the game will
go into extra time — Rohr
The players were playing believing that the game might go into extra
time.
We scored an own goal, which was unfortunate.
We fought back got a penalty but we conceded in the last minute. Last
time we scored late against South Africa, but today we lost to a late goal.
when he got to Lagos. That’s the
joy of Otedola,” he said.
“This is a challenge to others. It’s
a typical example of taking care
of people while they are alive.”
Liverpool
place £15
m tag on
Awoniyi
Liverpool have put a huge £15 m
price tag on their Nigerian
import, Taiwo Awonuyi who spent the
whole of last season with Belgian side
KAA Gent.
The Reds have conducted little
business so far this summer, with the
arrival of Sepp van den Berg due to be
followed by Harvey Elliott, while Rafa
Camacho joined Sporting CP for £7
million.
A host of other players are likely to
depart to follow Camacho and loanees
Marko Grujic and Sheyi Ojo.
One of those is Awoniyi, who moved
to Liverpool from the Imperial Soccer
Academy for £400,000 in 2015, but has
not made his debut due to work permit
issues.
Instead, the youngster has spent his
entire time on the Reds’ books out on
loan, at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen,
KAA Gent and two spells with Royal
Excel Mouscron.
Another loan this summer is
possible, but there is mounting interest
in a permanent deal for Awoniyi, who
was left out of Nigeria’s squad for the
Africa Cup of Nations.
WIMBLEDON OPEN FINAL
