Mentoring at Lakewood Elementary School
Schools out, it’s summertime! Why talk about
mentoring now? Because this is a great time
for new mentors to learn about mentoring and to
prepare to start in September.
Lakewood School in Carpentersville shares a
driveway with our building, Trinity Center. 90% of the 579
students qualify for free or reduced lunch. According to
recent state tests, 15% are proficient in reading and 22% are
proficient in math. According to our mentors’ experiences,
100% of them are wonderful kids doing their best.
What do mentors do? We eat lunch with our kids once a
week. We listen, we play games, we read books, we are a
reliable presence in their lives. We care. With the help of our prayer partners,we keep the students,
teachers and families in our prayers. Mentors receive online training and in-person counseling. They are
fingerprinted and receive a background check.
ChildServ Back to School Backpack Drive
During the 2018 school supply drive,
Barrington UMC and First UMC each
contributed 100 backpacks toward the 700
backpacks ChildServ seeks to distribute every year.
In addition to these 200 backpacks, many, many
boxes of additional supplies were provided by our caring congregations.
Early donations have given us a great start again this year, but your help is still needed. Please give
generously in August!
ChildServ is a UMC agency serving at-risk children in the greater Chicago area including Elgin. They
support families through early childhood and kindergarten readiness programs. They support foster
children and foster parents. There is an adoption program and three residential group homes. Of note,
for the last two years, every group home resident of age to graduate high school did graduate on time.
The Emerge program for homeless young adults ages 18 to 24 provides transitional housing and case
management to help young people achieve self-sufficiency. All of these programs make a significant
difference in the lives of children, youth and families.
