The Retrotrip 3 Classique is the next step up from the Retrotrip 2. It has all the same features including accuracy to

The Retrotrips themselves do not have the facility to count backwards, which is one of the many features 

that make it so popular in the historic events. But what if you make a mistake? 

This is where the Retrotrip Back-Tracker comes in. This handy gadget, when activated, stores the 

distance you drive to correct your error, then when you are back on the correct road, a simple flick of a 

switch and the Back-Tracker counts out your incorrect Miles/Kilometres, not allowing your Retrotrip to 

count up until it has erased all those incorrect Miles or Kilometres you gathered.

Retrotrip Driver Display – Classique Model (BR91C)

The Retrotrip Driver Display Unit works with both the Retrotrip 2 and Retrotrip 3 tripmeters and will sit 

neatly in front of the driver, replicating the distance count of its parent Retrotrip. It has the same electromechanical 

clicking counter as the rest of the Retrotrip range, giving the unit widespread approval.

Power Conditioner 

BR21 

The Brantz Power Conditioner has been designed to provide a reliable voltage source for Brantz 

International Rally Meters and Retrotrips. It is an essential item when these instruments are connected 

to a road vehicle having either a 6 volt power system, or a 12 volt power system of the less reliable 

dynamo type. 

FEATURES: 

Easy Connection via clearly labelled push connectors 

Internal resettable fuse – will disconnect the power for approx 30 seconds and then reconnect if 

the unit is overloaded 

Light Weight & Discrete 

Note: The Power Conditioner is intended to supply only ONE tripmeter! The unit will not compensate for 

loose connections or interference type faults.

MECHANICAL SENSORS 

Brantz Standard Wheel Sensor 

BR2A 

This 12mm diameter Wheel Sensor can be mounted on almost any car so that it picks up the metal hub 

bolt heads as they pass by. A minimum of 4 bolts are require however 6 is recommended. 

An alternative positioning for this type of sensor is to pick up on flying tabs (minimum of 2 positioned 

180° apart) fastened on the bolts of the Prop Shaft's Universal Joint. 

Note: Old tripmeters (pre- 2005) can be upgraded to work with this sensor at the Brantz factory for a 

small charge, or free of charge if the meter has come in for a service. 

Brantz High Temperature Wheel Sensor 

BR2A-HT 

The BR2A-HT is a 12mm device that works in exactly the same way as the above standard version 

however it is specially designed for High Temperature situations such as extremely hot climates or 

courses with increased levels of braking. The Operating Temperature is rated up to 120°C. 

Note: Old tripmeters (pre-2005) can be upgraded to work with this sensor at the Brantz factory for a 

small charge, or free of charge if the meter has come in for a service.

Brantz Wheel Sensor - 4mm 

BR2A-4mm 

The BR2A-4mm also has 12mm thread and works in exactly the same way as the standard version 

(BR2A), however it is specially designed with a larger sensing distance of 4mm. It is ideal for positioning 

where there might be slight movement due to normal wear and tear or the need for necessary 

adjustment. Any such movement could be too great for the Standard Wheel Sensor. The more triggers 

available the more accurate the tripmeter will be.

small charge, or free of charge if the meter have come in for a service. 

Brantz Drive\Prop Shaft Sensor 

BRH2 

Specially designed sensors for generic detection of rotating shafts provide bigger distance sensing with 

an adaptable mounting bracket kit. 

The Type BRH2 sensor is ideal for particularly old (pre-war cars) or as a fall-back sensor to be utilised 

when the more easily implemented types are not suitable.

This moulded plastic unit fits in the length of almost any speedometer cable. 2 Fastening Clips included. 

Note: Some old cables require holes to be slightly enlarged due to larger than normal inner cable 

dimensions.

Brantz (Japanese) M22 Gearbox Sensor 

BR3 

Most Japanese manufacturers have standardised their gearbox outputs to accept a M22 x 1.5mm thread 

which has a round peg drive with a ‘lug’ pinched onto the side. 

This unit can be fitted to either the gearbox or speedometer end of your speedometer cable (thread and 

space permitting).

Brantz (Japanese) High Grade 

M22 Gearbox Sensor – Dual Fitting 

BR3-HG-2 

The M22 Gearbox Sensor (pg19) also comes in this High Grade Version. As well as being designed to 

withstand the rigours of rough terrain, this sensor comes with 2 drive pin options for differences in the 

Nissan and Mitsubishi vs Toyota and Suzuki fittings. 

Brantz M22 Gearbox Sensor with Square Drive Pin

For the select few Japanese manufactured gearbox outputs with the M22 x1.5mm thread, but not the 

pinched pin drive, we also supply this M22 x 1.5mm version with a 2.7mm square pin drive requirement, 

as shown above.

This Brantz Sensor has a M12 x 1mm fitting with a 2.7mm square pin drive and will fit most Smith & 

Jaeger Speedometers as an alternative to a cable or Gearbox Sensor. 

Brantz (European) M18 Gearbox Sensor

Most European manufacturers (Ford/GM/Vauxhall/VW/Skoda/Lada/Fiat) have standardised their 

gearbox outputs to accept a M18 x 1.5mm thread which has a square peg drive.

ELECTRONIC SPEEDOMETER SENSORS 

Brantz Electronic Speedo Interface 

BR5 

This interface is intended to safely drive Brantz meters from digital pulse supplies found on vehicles 

fitted with digitally pulsed electronic speedometers or tachographs and as such, substitute for other 

types of motion sensors. 

Some types of ABS sensors are suitable as inputs to the interface, though some ABS systems do not 

generate a speedometer pulse until they reach a certain speed and so are not capable of accurate work, 

please check this with your car supplier. 

SATTELITE SENSOR 

Brantz Satellite Sensor 

A non mechanical, easy fit, sensor that will connect to the full range of Brantz tripmeters with a no 

calibration required option. 

BRGPS 

This unit simultaneously tracks many different satellites such as the Russian (Glonass), Chinese (BeiDOU) 

and American (GPS) systems, giving connection in the most testing environments. If, however, satellite 

links are lost (maybe in a tunnel) then it will calculate and recover the distance lost as a straight line. 

This sensor can be retro-fitted to the majority of old Brantz Tripmeters. Alternatively it is available 

directly from the manufacturer as a Plug & Go Bundle, which plugs straight into the tripmeter, so no 

additional power supply is required.

CANBUS INTERFACES 

Brantz CANBUS Interface – Hard Wired Version 

BR56 

Most cars after 2005 have a CANBUS system. This is a multiplexed wiring system used to connect 

intelligent devices such as Gearbox and Engine Electronic Control Units (ECU's), Speed, ABS and Stereo 

information; allowing data to be transferred conveniently throughout the vehicle. The Brantz CANBUS 

Interface Sensor allows you to tap into the CANBUS system to pick out the speed pulse from your 

vehicle. These units are vehicle specific so the make, model and year of vehicle would have to be 

supplied upon purchasing. 

Please refer to our website for a list of vehicles that this sensor is suitable for. 

These units come with a choice of 2 RECOMMENDED Meter Mounting Kits. Please see below: 

Brantz CANBUS Plug Kit 

BR45 

This option is for fitting to Brantz Meters which have a Male plug 

attachment fitted. 

BRANTZ CANBUS Wiring Kit

This option is for attaching the CANBUS Sensor directly to a Brantz Meter 

Sensor Cable with crimped ends (i.e. no Plug) 

We also STRONGLY RECOMMEND fitting a Contactless CAN Reader (BRCCR) when tapping directly into 

your CAN wires as this is a non intrusive method of connection therefore not voiding any warranty on 

new vehicle

Brantz CANBUS Interface – Plug & Go Version 

BR57 or BR58 

This Brantz CANBUS Plug & Go Sensor allows you to access the CANBUS system via the OBDII socket 

(used by diagnostic engineers) to pick up the speed pulse from your vehicle. This nifty piece of kit makes 

it extremely easy to tap into the speed pulse of newer vehicles without the need to mechanically fit a 

sensor. It is very useful when using, for example, hire cars or proofing the route in your modern course 

car. 

2 Versions are available to accommodate more vehicles; please refer to our website for a list of 

compatible vehicles. 

These units come with a choice of 2 RECOMMENDED Meter Mounting Kits. Please see below:

SENSOR ACCESSORIES 

Brantz Sensor Pulse Doubler 

BR52 

Brantz Tripmeters and Retrotrips which are fitted to vehicles with a low number of pulses feeding to the 

tripmeter produce a low calibration figure. If this figure is normally in the range under 499 (or 999 on a 

Laser 3) then the calibrated accuracy of the tripmeter can be improved by doubling the number of pulses 

produced by the sensor. 

This device will fit in-line with the grey sensor cable coming from the tripmeter. Extension cables are 

available from Brantz for ease of fitting (BR2X). The extension cable will connect as normal to the Brantz 

wheel type sensor or any of the Brantz speedometer cable or gearbox sensors. This will result in the 

doubling of the tripmeter calibration figure, which makes a finer step between one calibration figure and 

the next. 

Brantz Pulse Reducer BR5-2A 

The interface is intended for use in conjunction with the Brantz Universal Wheel Sensor (BR2A) when 

the pulse rate is too high for the calibration push-wheel digits on the meter to compensate. 

If you need to reduce the number of pulses produced from any of the other Brantz Sensors, you would 

need to fit a BR5: Brantz Electronic Speedo Interface in between your sensor and your tripmeter

Brantz Rally Clock/Timer PLUS 

BR32+ 

The Rally Timer should be on everyone's basic equipment list for any entrant into rallying; from Scatter 

Rallies, Road Rallies, Historic Rallies to Stage Rallies. 

Being exactly the same height and display size as the Brantz Range of International Tripmeters this unit 

sits along side them perfectly and is an invaluable piece of equipment; whether you are just trying to 

make it around the route, or when there is only a second in it. 

As well as 24Hr, 12Hr, Second Counting and a Decimal Timing System, the Brantz Rally Timer has 4 

separate stopwatch functions consisting of: 

1. Standard Stopwatch – Start, Stop, Reset, Freeze Stopwatch (inc Time of Day Hold) 

2. Regularity Stopwatch – Start, Stop, Reset, 32 second Hold of Stopwatch (inc Time of Day Hold) 

with automatic Restart in the background. 

3. Jogularity Cumulative Stopwatch – Start, Stop, 32 second Hold of Stopwatch (inc Time of Day 

Hold) with continued stopwatch counting in the background. 

4. Standard Cumulative Stopwatch – Start, Stop, reset, Hold Stopwatch (inc Time of Day Hold) with 

continued stopwatch counting in the background. 

Includes the Remote Button required for certain functions. 

Comes factory fitted with a socket to plug in a Driver Display Unit

The Plug Kit enables the removal of Brantz meters from the 

vehicles for safe keeping, or to share one meter between 

several vehicles. They can be factory fitted to the Tripmeter 

when ordered together or retrospectively fitted to your 

existing meter. Also available for the Rally Timer (BR43-RT)

The Brantz Electronic Speedtable is a pocket sized devise which helps you maintain an accurate average 

speed over any distance. It works in conjunction with your Brantz International or Retrotrip but no direct 

connection is required.

Stopwatch & Clock 

BR42 

This Stopwatch & Clock (version 1.1) features hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second, 

spread over two uses of a large format four digit LCD screen. 

The primary function of this stand alone stopwatch is to hold the time of day for logging purposes , then 

restores the current time of day to the readouts following the noting of the time. 

A bonus feature is that this clock holds a memory of the previous frozen time, just in case the screen 

freeze is released accidentally before the time is fully noted or agreed. A good quality alkaline PP3 

battery lasts about a week, but use of the night lights will reduce this life. A lithium type battery is 

slightly more expensive, but can last even longer.

Which Sensor? 

Brantz Rally Tripmeters require a sensor to send travel information up to the instrument so that it can 

calculate and display just how far the vehicle has travelled. 

The most suitable sensor is chosen from a few key factors pertaining to the vehicle that the tripmeter is 

being installed into. 

The criteria are: 

1. Positioning – You don't want the sensor knocked off by flying debris on a rough course 

2. Accuracy - Different bits of the vehicle travel different distances when rallying 

3. Ease of Fitting – Do you prefer mechanical or electrical 

4. Cost Considerations - Remember the cost includes fitting time and servicing time. 

The first choice is the screw-on gearbox sensor which is the fastest and easiest to fit. It has great 

reliability as it is not near high heat sources or in the path of flying under-car debris. 

The 2 most common types are; 

• BR3: Japanese Gearbox Sensor: This sensor fits many Japanese cars which have the M22x1.5 

gearbox threaded speedo output fitting (the rotating drive pin is round with a single ‘lug’ pinched 

onto one side. 

• BR4: European Gearbox Sensor: This sensor fits many European cars and also a significant 

number of Ford vehicles which have a M18x1.5mm thread. The drive pin is a square section and 

is also reversible to accommodate different drive pin length requirements. 

If you have a different variation of gearbox thread than the 2 fittings mentioned above, please feel free 

to contact us with the thread, pitch and drive pin shape of your speedo-cable feed as we do stock 

quantities of alternative sizes. 

If the vehicle has a mechanically driven speedometer but is not suitable for a gearbox sensor, if space is 

limited or on older British cars with imperial gearbox thread, then choose the BR1: Universal 

Speedometer Cable sensor which fits somewhere in the length of the existing speedometer cable. This 

choice will require the removal of the speedo cable and cutting of the speedo cable sleeving, which is a 

little more effort, but is an excellent and common choice. 

The first generation of cars which had an electronically driven speedometer (i.e. there was no 

mechanical cable) generated pulses from a device screwed onto the gearbox where the old cable once 

went, or from a dedicated sender built into the transmission chain somewhere. They are three-wire 

devices; one wire being ground, one wire being +12v power when the ignition key is ON, and the one 

wire we are interested in, which has a digital signal on it. The voltage on this wire if viewed by a 

voltmeter will go up to 12volts and down to ground a few times per revolution of the transmission. For 

these vehicles the part required would be a BR5: Electronic Speedo Interface. The BR5 will prevent the 

car and the tripmeter from damaging each other.

Rally cars competing on loose surfaces use a lot of wheel spin at the driven wheels. This scenario 

dictates that an accurate tripmeter will need to pick up from a non-driven wheel using the BR2A: Wheel 

Sensor. There is an expectation that this type of sensor will not have a long life due to heat from brakes 

and flying debris damage. For hot climates and runs with increased amounts of braking we would 

recommend a BR2A-HT: High Temperature Wheel Sensor which will cope with temperatures up to 

120°C. Both these sensors have a 1mm sensing distance, minimising the likelihood of debris becoming 

lodged between the sensor and its pick-up. For situations where there is likely to be movement between 

the sensor and pick-ups, such as at the extremities of the wheel, we would recommend our BR2A-4mm: 

Wheel Sensor, which has a slightly larger sensing distance of 4mm. 

An alternative positioning for our BR2A range of sensors is to pick up on flying tabs (minimum of 2 

positioned 180° apart) fasted on the bolt heads of the prop shaft’s Universal Joint. 

Customers may wish to fit a backup sensor (possibly of a different type, or maybe the same type fitted 

onto a different wheel) to cover for damage. In order to connect your 2 sensors up to the one tripmeter 

we recommend our BR49: Dual Sensor Switch which allows you to quickly and easily switch to your back 

up sensor without having to get out of your vehicle. 

Some vehicles can not use any of the above sensors such as; modern vehicles with ABS systems which 

only generate pulses above 7kph for their own speedometers, 4wd type vehicles and also Pre-War 

vehicles whose speedometer cable is particularly large or sealed to the outer sleeving. In these cases we 

would recommend the BRH2: Drive/Prop Shaft Sensor. These are straightforward to fit, but care should 

be taken to fit them in a location which does not suffer from flying debris or moves out of alignment 

with the suspension etc. Also please see the BRGPS: Satellite Seeker mentioned below 

Another alternative if you are using a modern car; or are doing a race reccy in your everyday car is the 

BR57-58: CANBUS Interface. These plug directly into your diagnostic OBDII socket (usually located in the 

drivers foot-well). It is extremely easy to fit and remove without any mechanical or electrical effort. 

Simply Plug & Go. This is really only for vehicles newer than 2005. There are 2 different types of Plug & 

Go Interfaces for different vehicle configurations. Please refer to our CANBUS Compatibility guide - but 

please note , this is not a definitive list – there may be additional vehicles we have not tested and there 

will always be exceptions to the rule, particularly with crossover years of manufacture. Please 

consult your vehicle manufacturer for more information 

Some of the modern vehicles have the CANBUS system unavailable at the OBDII socket, in this instance 

we do a version that wires directly in the CAN HI & CAN LO wires BR56: CANBUS Interface, either 

directly or via our BRCCR: Contactless CAN Reader 

N.B. Please check before purchasing that your vehicles speed pulse is fed into the CANBUS system. 

If the information is not available at the vehicles OBDII Socket an alternative Plug & Go system is our 

BRGPS: Satellite Seeker. This is again great for rally reccy's in your modern vehicle or hire car and 4wd 

drive events where there is likely to be a lot of wheel spin or wheel lock.

Fine Tuning 

Too Few Pulses: 

If your sensor set up results in a particularly low calibration figure – under 499; we would advise fitting a 

BR52: Pulse Doubler in between the sensor and the tripmeter to raise the calibration figure which in 

turn increases the tripmeter accuracy. 

Too Many Pulses: 

If your sensor set up results in a too high a calibration figure to enter on your tripmeter – over 999; you 

will need to fit a BR5-2A: Pulse Reducer between your BR2A: Brantz Wheel Sensor and the tripmeter. 

If you are getting too many pulses from a sensor other than the Wheel Sensor, you would need to use 

the BR5 as a Pulse Reducer.
