International Plug & Go Bundles

All of the International model tripmeters have the ability to be purchased as a Plug & Go Bundle.

These tripmeters can be quickly and easily fitted to any vehicle, modern or classic, and also easily moved

between vehicles as there is no mechanical sensor to wire in, just a GNSS sensor which can be mounted

on the dash by the windscreen.

This system is great for reccying routes or for beginners who are just starting out and do not know

whether to go ahead and fit a mechanical sensor to their car just yet.

Installation can be even quicker with the addition of a 12V AUX Plug for power.

Mounting can also be super easy with an International Window Mount.

The Tripmeters can either be Standard or the Driver Display compatible versions:

Retrotrip Driver Display – Classique Model (BR91C)

Retrotrip Driver Display Unit

The Retrotrip Driver Display Unit works with both the Retrotrip 2 and Retrotrip 3 tripmeters and will sit

neatly in front of the driver, replicating the distance count of its parent Retrotrip. It has the same electromechanical

clicking counter as the rest of the Retrotrip range, giving the unit widespread approval.

The Retrotrips themselves do not have the facility to count backwards, which is one of the many features

that make it so popular in the historic events. But what if you make a mistake?

This is where the Retrotrip Back-Tracker comes in. This handy gadget, when activated, stores the

distance you drive to correct your error. Then when you are back on the correct road a simple flick of a

switch and the Back-Tracker counts out your incorrect Miles/Kilometres, not allowing your Retrotrip to

count up until it has erased all those incorrect Miles or Kilometres you gathered.

MECHANICAL SENSORS

Brantz Standard Wheel Sensor

BR2A

This 12mm diameter Wheel Sensor can be mounted on almost any car in a variety of different locations

and set ups. The most common set up is mounted to pick up the metal bolt heads on your brake disc as

they pass by. A minimum of 4 bolts are required, however 6 is recommended. Steel is the optimum

target and being at least 20% larger than the face of the sensor, this is also true for the size of a hole

being used to trigger the sensor.

Alternative positioning:

• Mounted to pick up on flying tabs (minimum of 2 positioned 180° apart) fastened on the bolts of

the Prop Shaft's Universal Joint.

• Mounted to pick up off an ABS ring

• Mounted through the back plate of Drum Brakes to pick up off the 4 hub studs

• Mounted to detect an absence of steel, for example drilled holes in a rotating disc.

Brantz High Temperature Wheel Sensor

BR2A-HT

The BR2A-HT is a 12mm device that works in exactly the same way as the Standard Wheel Sensor

version, however, it is specially designed for High Temperature situations such as extremely hot climates

or courses with increased levels of braking. The Operating Temperature is rated up to 120°C.

Brantz Wheel Sensor - 4mm

BR2A-4mm

The BR2A-4mm also has 12mm thread and works in exactly the same way as the standard version

(BR2A), however, it is specially designed with a larger sensing distance of 4mm. It is ideal for positioning

where there might be slight movement due to normal wear and tear or the need for necessary

adjustment. Any such movement could be too great for the Standard Wheel Sensor. The more triggers

available the more accurate the tripmeter will be.

Brantz Drive\Prop Shaft Sensor

These sensors, for generic detection of rotating shafts, provide a much larger sensing distance of up to

10mm, and come supplied with a specially designed adaptable mounting bracket kit.

The Type BRH2 sensor is ideal for particularly old (pre-war) cars, or as a fall-back sensor to be utilised when

the more easily implemented types are not suitable.

This moulded plastic unit fits in the length of almost any speedometer cable.

Brantz (Japanese) M22 Gearbox Sensor

Most Japanese manufacturers have standardised their gearbox outputs to accept a M22 x 1.5mm thread

which has a round pin drive with a ‘lug’ pinched onto the side.

This unit can be fitted to either the gearbox or speedometer end of your speedometer cable (thread and

space permitting).

ELECTRONIC SPEEDOMETER SENSORS

Brantz Electronic Speedo Interface

BR5

This interface is intended to safely drive Brantz meters from digital pulse supplies found on vehicles

fitted with digitally pulsed electronic speedometers or tachographs and as such, substitute for other

types of motion sensors.

Some types of ABS sensors are suitable as inputs to the interface, though some ABS systems do not

generate a speedometer pulse until they reach a certain speed and so are not capable of accurate work,

please check this with your vehicle manufacturer.

GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM (GNSS)

Brantz Satellite Sensor

A non-mechanical, easy fit, sensor that will connect to the full range of Brantz tripmeters with a no

calibration required option. This unit will convert any Brantz tripmeter to a GNSS trip.

BRGPS

This unit simultaneously tracks many different satellites such as the Russian (Glonass), Chinese (BeiDOU)

and American (GPS) systems, giving connection in the most testing environments. If, however, satellite

links are lost (maybe in a tunnel) then it will calculate and recover the distance lost as a straight line.

This sensor can be retro-fitted to your existing Brantz Tripmeters.

Alternatively it is available as a Plug & Go Bundle when bought together with the tripmeter. This plugs

straight in, no mechanical sensor or additional wiring required.

CANBUS INTERFACES

Brantz CANBUS Interface – Hard Wired Version

Most cars after 2005 have a CANBUS system. This is a multiplexed wiring system used to connect intelligent

devices such as Gearbox and Engine Electronic Control Units (ECU's), Speed, ABS and Stereo information;

allowing data to be transferred conveniently throughout the vehicle. The Brantz CANBUS Interface Sensor

allows you to tap into the CANBUS system to pick out the speed pulse from your vehicle. These units are

vehicle specific so the make, model and year of vehicle would have to be supplied upon purchasing.

Please refer to our website for a list of vehicles that this sensor is suitable for.

Brantz CANBUS Interface – Plug & Go Version

This Brantz CANBUS Plug & Go Sensor allows you to access the CANBUS system via the OBDII socket (used

by diagnostic engineers) to pick up the speed pulse from your vehicle. This nifty piece of kit makes it

extremely easy to tap into the speed pulse of newer vehicles without the need to mechanically fit a sensor.

It is very useful when using, for example, hire cars or proofing the route in your modern course car.

Power Conditioner

The Brantz Power Conditioner is an essential item for connecting your International Tripmeter or

Retrotrip to a 6 volt vehicle.

It has been designed to provide a reliable, smooth voltage

source. This item is strongly recommended for Retrotrip units

not only on 6 volt vehicles but also when fitted to a vehicle

with a 12 volt power system of the less reliable dynamo type.

Contains a resettable fuse which will disconnect the power for

approx. 30 seconds and then reconnect if temporarily

overloaded.

Note: The Power Conditioner is intended to supply only ONE

tripmeter! The unit will not compensate for loose connections

or interference type faults.

Plug Kit

The Plug Kit enables the removal of Brantz meters from

your vehicle for safe keeping, or to share one meter

between several vehicles. They can be factory fitted to the

Tripmeter when ordered together or retrospectively fitted

Stopwatch & Clock

This Stopwatch & Clock (version 1.1) features hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second, spread

over two uses of a large format four digit LCD screen.

The primary function of this standalone stopwatch is to hold the time of day for logging purposes, then

restores the current time of day to the readouts following the noting of the time.

A bonus feature is that this clock holds a memory of the previous frozen time, just in case the screen freeze

is released accidentally before the time is fully noted or agreed. A good quality alkaline PP3 battery lasts

about a week, but use of the night lights will reduce this life. A lithium type battery is slightly more

expensive, but can last even longer.

Brantz Sensor Pulse Doubler

BR52

Brantz Tripmeters and Retrotrips which are fitted to vehicles with a

low number of pulses feeding to the tripmeter produce a low

calibration figure. If this figure is normally in the range under 499

(or 999 on a Laser 3) then the calibrated accuracy of the tripmeter

can be improved by doubling the number of pulses produced by the

sensor.

This device will fit in-line with the grey sensor cable coming from

the tripmeter. This will result in the doubling of the tripmeter

calibration figure, which makes a finer step between one calibration

figure and the next. Extension cables are available from Brantz for

ease of fitting (BR2X). The extension cable will connect as normal to

the Brantz wheel type sensor or any of the Brantz speedometer

cable or gearbox sensors.

Brantz Pulse Reducer

BR5-2A

The interface is intended for use in conjunction with the Brantz Universal Wheel Sensor (BR2A) / High

Temperature Wheel Sensor (BR2A-HT) or 4mm Wheel Sensor (BR2A-4mm) when the pulse rate is too

high for the calibration push-wheel digits on the meter to compensate.

If you need to reduce the number of pulses produced from any of the

other Brantz Sensors, you would need to fit a Brantz Electronic

Speedo Interface (BR5) in between your sensor and your tripmeter

Sensor Extension Cable

BR2X

3M extra cable length for longer vehicles or just if the sensor is far

from the meter. Includes crimped ends and terminal blocks.

Which Sensor?

Brantz Rally Tripmeters require a sensor to send travel information up to the instrument so that it can calculate

and display just how far the vehicle has travelled.

The most suitable sensor is chosen from a few key factors pertaining to the vehicle that the tripmeter is being installed

into.

The criteria are:

1. Positioning – You need to be able to access your sensor, but you don’t want it easily dislodged or knocked

2. Accuracy - Different sensor types may give you different calibration figures and possibly increased accuracy

for your particular vehicle

3. Ease of Fitting – Do you prefer mechanical or electrical if that is an option. Or even Plug & Go if allowed.

4. Cost Considerations - Remember the cost includes fitting time and servicing time.

The first choice is the screw-on gearbox sensor that fits between your gearbox and Speedo Cable this option is the

fastest and easiest to fit. It has great reliability as it is not near high heat sources or in the path of flying under-car

debris.

Some of the types we are stock are;

BR3: M22 Japanese Gearbox Sensor with a Pinched Pin Drive

BR3-HG-2: M22 High Grade Japanese Gearbox Sensor with 2 Drive Pin Styles (Pinched Pin or Spade)

BR3-SQ: M22 Gearbox Sensor with a Square Pin Drive

BR4: M18 European Gearbox Sensor with a Square Pin Drive

If you have a different variation of gearbox thread than our standard fittings above, please feel free to contact us

with the thread, pitch and drive pin shape of your speedo-cable feed as we can source alternative sizes.

If the vehicle has a mechanically driven speedometer but is not suitable for a gearbox sensor, if space is

limited or on older British cars with imperial gearbox thread, then your options are BR1: Universal

Speedometer Cable sensor which fits in the length of the existing speedometer cable. This choice will

require the removal of the speedo cable and cutting of the speedo cable sleeving, which is a little more

effort, but is an excellent and common choice. Alternatively the BRM12: Smith/Jaeger Speedometer

Sensor, which will fit most of the Smiths and Jaeger Speedometers apart from the very early ones.

The first generation of cars which had an electronically driven speedometer (i.e. there was no mechanical

cable) generated pulses from a device screwed onto the gearbox where the old cable once went, or

from a dedicated sender built into the transmission chain. They are three-wire devices; one wire being

ground, one wire being +12v power when the ignition key is ON, and the one wire we are interested in,

which has a digital signal on it. The voltage on this wire if viewed by a voltmeter will go up to 12volts and

down to ground a few times per revolution of the transmission. For these vehicles the sensor would be a

BR5: Electronic Speedo Interface. Connect the digital signal wire mentioned above to the single terminal

end of the BR5 interface. The other end of the interface goes to the tripmeter. The BR5 will prevent

the car and the tripmeter from damaging each other. Additionally the BR5 allows a very high pulse rate

source (such as for some Astra cars) to be divided down to a reasonable pulse rate so that our tripmeters

can calibrate in the normal range. Very quick and easy to fit.

Rally cars competing on loose surfaces use a lot of wheel spin at the driven wheels. This scenario dictates

that for accuracy the tripmeter will need to pick up from a non-driven wheel using the BR2A:

Wheel Sensor. For hot climates and runs with increased amounts of braking we would recommend a

BR2A-HT: High Temperature Wheel Sensor which will cope with temperatures up to 120°C. Both these

sensors have a 1mm sensing distance, minimising the likelihood of debris becoming lodged between the

sensor and its pick-up. For situations where there is likely to be movement between the sensor and pickups,

such as at the extremities of the wheel, we would recommend our BR2A-4mm: Wheel Sensor with

a slightly larger sensing distance of 4mm.

An alternative positioning for our BR2A range of sensors is to pick up on flying tabs (minimum of 2 positioned

180° apart) fastened on the bolt heads of the prop shaft’s Universal Joint.

Customers may wish to fit a backup sensor (possibly of a different type, or maybe the same type fitted

onto a different wheel) to cover for damage. In order to connect your 2 sensors up to the one tripmeter

we recommend our BR49: Dual Sensor Switch which allows you to quickly and easily switch to your back

up sensor without having to get out of your vehicle.

Some vehicles cannot use any of the above sensors such as; modern vehicles with ABS systems which

only generate pulses above 7kph for their own speedometers, 4wd type vehicles and also Pre-War vehicles

whose speedometer cable is particularly large or sealed to the outer sleeving. In these cases we

would recommend the BRH2: Drive/Prop Shaft Sensor. These are straightforward to fit, but care should

be taken to fit them in a location which does not suffer from flying debris or moving out of alignment

with the suspension etc.

Another alternative if you are using a modern car; or are doing a race reccy in your everyday car is the

BR57-58: CANBUS Interface. These plug directly into your diagnostic OBDII socket (usually located in the

drivers foot-well) and is extremely easy to fit or remove without any mechanical or electrical effort.

Simply Plug & Go. This is really only for vehicles newer than 2005 but older than 2017.

Some very new vehicles have the CANBUS system but not available at the OBDII socket, in this instance

we do a version that wires directly to the CAN HI & CAN LO wires BR56: CANBUS Interface, either directly

or via our BRCCR: Contactless CAN Reader should you not wish to void your warranty.

N.B. Please check before purchasing that your vehicles speed pulse is fed into the CANBUS system.

If the information is not available at the vehicles OBDII Socket an alternative Plug & Go system is our

BRGPS: Satellite Seeker. This GNSS system is extremely accurate, again great for rally reccy's in your

modern vehicle or hire car and 4wd drive events where there is likely to be a lot of wheel spin on all

wheels.

Too Few Pulses:

If your sensor set up results in a particularly low calibration figure – under 499; we would advise fitting a

BR52: Pulse Doubler in between the sensor and the tripmeter to raise the calibration figure, which in

turn increases the tripmeter accuracy.

Too Many Pulses:

If your sensor set up results in a too high a calibration figure to enter on your tripmeter – over 999; you

will need to fit a BR5-2A: Pulse Reducer between your BR2A: Brantz Wheel Sensor and the tripmeter.

If you are getting too many pulses from a sensor other than the Wheel Sensor, you would need to use

the BR5 as a Pulse Reducer.
