Connecting Neighbors to Help Seniors Thrive

FIGHTING ISOLATION THROUGH connection
INTERGENERATIONAL CONNECTIONS WERE SOME OF THE VERY FIRST
BUILDING BLOCKS AT A LITTLE HELP. Connecting older adults to youth from preschool
to high school and college students, A Little Help has been at the forefront of this movement.
There have been so many stories, ideas, and dreams shared between the generations on
Service Saturdays!, during service projects with various school groups and scout troops, and
with the families and friends who serve together. These connections bring smiles, laughter,
and connection to every program offered by A Little Help.
A Little Help | 1 | Building Community to Fight Isolation

A Little Help was established to provide our elders with the non-medical
services and intergenerational connections essential to maintaining
active, productive lives in their own homes. Today, people are living longer
and often do not have the resources or support systems to continue living
in their own homes as they age. A Little Help fills this gap.
FROM THE Executive Director
Wow, 13 years! I want to first say, “Thank you!” The commitment you have shown
in helping us connect neighbors has been one of a kind; I feel like I say this often,
and it is so true. As we continue to strive to foster reciprocal benefits for all
our members and bridge the gap from one generation to the next, we focus on
intergenerational connection and ensure that all ages are a part of the mission to
serve our community.
A Little Help was founded in 2005 as a grassroots community effort led by
volunteers who began connecting neighbors to empower older adults to age well
in their homes. Now professionally-led and volunteer-driven, A Little Help serves
four locations statewide, reaching into over 100 neighborhoods in Colorado to
improve the quality of life of more older adults and their neighbors through direct
services and intergenerational community-building programs and events.
In 2018, A Little Help continued to make an impact on neighborhoods throughout
Colorado. We deepened our impact in Larimer County and began serving the
county towards the end of the year. Growth continues to increase and will
contribute to serving more older adults and getting neighbors involved in
A Little Help. The expansion in Larimer County added to our growing locations
in Denver, Jefferson, Chaffee and Delta Counties.
Special thanks to all our donors who continue to allow us to grow our mission
through innovative programs and grassroots connections. Of course, we could not
accomplish our mission without the wonderful volunteering members who pitch
in to clean gutters and wash windows on Service Saturdays! and give our regular
rides to the grocery store or to the doctor. We are building community in great
ways every day!
Programs, Events
& Partnerships

PROGRAMS AND events
Service Saturday! – Service Saturday! events are a wonderful way for volunteers to engage with
A Little Help and help neighbors with spring and fall yard and home chores.
2018’s events were BIG, with two new additional events added to the schedule.
In Spring 2018, we provided services to our members in South and North Denver
and Jefferson, Chaffee and Delta Counties. In Fall 2018, we added service areas
in North and South Jefferson County, as well as inaugural events in Larimer County and Cedaredge in
Delta County. 2018 boasted collaboration with several youth groups including: South High School Football
Team, Interact Club of Lakewood High School and many college students from Colorado State University.
At these events, we served 200 homes (over 300 older adults) in five counties, engaging 700 volunteers!
A Little Community – More companies and
organizations have been reaching out to
A Little Help for their days of service.. In 2018,
we accommodated over 20 groups, who helped
with tasks like yard work, friendly visits, errand
running and so much more. We took note of this
growing interest and are creating a program
called, “A Little Community.” This program
will formalize the relationship with various
companies and organizations in the community
working to connect service needs and social
connections for neighbors.
Summer Picnics – Our Summer Picnics are
fun and growing each year. We bring together
neighbors from all walks of life to celebrate
together with great food and conversation. City
Park Pavilion and the Washington Park Boathouse
are the locations for the celebrations each year. In
addition to these larger picnics, we reintroduced
the opportunity to have a few additional backyard
picnics at willing members’ homes. Each year,
these events bring together interested neighbors
and long-standing members of A Little Help.
Tough Talks – Tough Talks bring together expert
panelists to share interesting information and
T O U G H T A L K S
create space for questions
and answers. Topics for
Tough Talks in 2018 included
the following programs:
Proactive Planning, Holistic Health, Technologies
in Aging and our first City Chat, with several
Council people in the City and County of Denver.
Tough Talks are a wonderful opportunity for
members to socialize and to learn more about
topics that may be difficult for them to begin a
conversation about with others.
FUNDRAISING events
We depend on you and your investment to fulfill our mission of
connecting neighbors to help seniors thrive. At A Little Help, we
are grateful that each year you give and volunteer more for us and your
neighbors. Your generous support helps us spread our innovative grassroots
model throughout Colorado.
Engaging in Aging –
At A Little Help, we engage older
adults with many opportunities to
learn, connect and socialize in the community. In
2018, we hosted two Engaging in Aging events in
partnership with the Lakewood Cultural Center
and the Knoebel Institute for Healthy Aging. These
events brought over 200 older adults to learn from
a variety of community partners who presented
information on topics like “Mindful Looking” and
“Dementia 101,” while providing a social forum
among aging neighbors.
Fiesta de Mayo –
We celebrated six years of Fiesta de Mayo as our
wonderful and fun fundraiser in 2018 was held
at Space Gallery in May. The evening brought
together donors and other supporters for a night
with a silent auction, and delicious food and drinks.
The support and generosity empowers A Little Help
to continue providing quality services throughout
Colorado. 2018 was another wonderful event,
bringing in unique auction items and huge support
for our work in the community. Thank you!
Colorado Gives Day -
Colorado Gives Day engages
donors across Colorado every
December. This event is one of the
BIGGEST fundraisers for our important work. By
the end of the day on December 5th, 150 donors
had raised over $130,000 to support older adults
by giving to A Little Help! Our biggest Colorado
Gives Day yet wouldn’t have been possible
without our incredible community and for that
we are so grateful!
How you can help…
For A Little Help to grow and continue our
commitment to the highest quality of care and
coordination, we need your volunteer time and
financial support. Volunteering and donating to
A Little Help are made easy through our website
OUR partners
AmeriCorps Program – A Little Help has been
partnering with Boomers Leading Change for
the past two years. The AmeriCorps program
is a federally funded program that works with
older adults 55+ interested in giving back to
provide capacity at local nonprofit organizations
throughout Metro Denver. This program has been
a huge support for A Little Help by adding more
outreach opportunities, including implementing
warm welcome visits with all new members.
Northern Colorado – As we’ve established our
mission in Northern Colorado, A Little Help has
been creating strong ties with the City of Fort
Collins, including a financial grant of $13,500 to
help launch our services. At our Launch event on
October 20, Mayor Wade Troxell cut a ceremonial
ribbon and issued an official proclamation,
marking the day “A Little Help Service Saturday!
Kickoff Day” in Fort Collins. We are also working
with several City offices to create opportunities
that build community and serve our older adult
neighbors, partnering with the offices of Social
Sustainability and Neighborhood Services.
Additionally, A Little Help has officially expanded
operations to provide services to the community
in Berthoud in southern Larimer County. In
2018, we established a leadership team to lead
the operation and funding to hire a part-time
coordinator.
Next50 Initiative – The Next50 Initiative
has been instrumental to the expansion and
subsequent growth in Northern Colorado. In
conjunction with Partnership for Age Friendly
Communities (PAFC) in Larimer County, A Little
Help was able to secure this funding stream to
hire a Director in the area and to grow those
needing help and those willing to provide help
in the area. The continued partnership with the
Next50 Initiative has also provided opportunities
to train in “Changing the Narrative” to erase
ageism and create a culture embracing the
contributions of older adults.
NOTES OF Gratitude
EACH YEAR, WE RECEIVE MANY GRATEFUL NOTES AND LETTERS FROM
MEMBERS OF ALL AGES. 2018 WAS NO EXCEPTION. Because Service Saturday!
events are some of our most popular and well-attended, we receive many notes after
the leaves are cleared. Over the past twelve months, we’ve had 3000 volunteers
(event and recurring) serving 800 older adult members – some of whom also
volunteer with us! With their generosity, investment, and good work, A Little Help has
come a long way.
“Cynthia” wrote:
“Just wished to express my gratitude for the crew that came to my home yesterday. I truly woke up to a new normal today.
They were so helpful, kind, respectful, and loving. They even indulged my request of sharing a prayer at the end of their
time with me. This touched me deeply. I just can’t say enough good things, please know that this has made an impact on
me on many levels...beyond raking leaves, I am grateful beyond measure. Many, many thanks.”
The volunteer wrote:
“I want you to know how powerful it was to connect with Cynthia last week. As she stood with tears in her eyes
overwhelmed by the work and love expressed by the group I could barely hold it together. She asked us to join hands
and pray with her. To tell the truth, I am not a prayer guy...but when she shared her gratitude and love in that prayer,
I was a prayer guy that day!”
We hope you know that these beautiful connections and loving relationships start
with our community and your generosity.
We are grateful to have connected with you in 2018 and look forward to what 2019
brings! Please stay connected by visiting our website at alittlehelp.org, giving us a
