ECA REVIEW HANNA/CORONATION/STETTLER, AB JuL y 25'19 5
From hoofs to helicopters, the 11th annual Battle River Ride for STARS was undeniably successful being their most popular year yet. Beating last year’s attendance by 27, 164 riders hit the trails,
raising $35,665.40 and setting a new fundraising record. Horse trailers lined the area for the overnight camping before the big trail ride on Sun. July 13. ECA Review/Submitted
PAINTEARTH COUNTY COUNCIL
Circle Square Ranch apprehensive of CETO project
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
Circle Square Ranch co-director
Kevin Perry and Bernie Doan came to
council on Tues. July 16 to discuss the
adverse effects the Central East
Transfer Out (CETO) project could
have on the non-profit camp
organization.
Over 150,000 people have walked
through the doors of the ‘old motel’
since the 1970s when it opened and the
ranch sees roughly 200 people per
week.
It is one of nine under Intervarsity,
an Ontario nonprofit
organization that
hosts youth and
multiple other
organizations all
year round
including international
visitors.
“It is a very
valuable thing
geared towards
mostly kids,
youth and its
leadership development
so for us
we really have a
big concern with
this,” began
Perry.
Perry mentioned
that
roughly $45,000
is spent monthly
with local businesses,
making it
a vital economic
engine within
the east central
region.
The other
underlying concern
is the visual
beauty of the
property which
may be tarnished
with the massive
power lines in sight.
They did acknowledge the wind turbines
that are already visible to the
southeast but disclosed that some
groups have simply left because of
their presence as they come from
urban centres in hopes of escaping that
reality for the peaceful countryside
experience.
Many of the outdoor activities are
based around the diverse landscape
including the valley to the south as
well.
“For future development we really
want to have a voice and to also have
you guys understand that you can be a
actually pretty exponential.”
Circle Square is one of three camps
in Alberta under Intervarsity that
competes for more funding.
